- spiff21, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Jobs is Disney's largest stockholder, but he is not anywhere close to owning the company. We haven't seen the details of this yet. It's possible that this could be done without cutting into iTunes sales. For example, the free version might be lower quality (and maybe they'll up the iTunes video quality at the same time), have commercials, etc. We won't know until we see it.
- JackDoyle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8"New technology would be aimed at preventing viewers from fast-forwarding through commercials, in an effort to keep advertisers happy."
That'll last about an hour! - realnebby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Jobs only owns about 6-7% of Disney. Additionally the article says that they are going this to stop users from fast forwarding through commercials, so there will most certainly be commercials in these "free" downloads and probably require some special player that doesn't allow fast forwarding. At least until someone hacks it.
- delhokie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6CNNMoney.com article about the same:
http://money.cnn.com/2006/04/10/news/companies/disney.reut/index.htm?cnn=yes - lpcustom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Sure you can. Mplayer and Bittorrent. Watch all the tv shows in Linux you want.
- celeb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Most likely because these shows are available for free in general... just need an antenna. Word of mouth will drive users who were previously unable to watch these shows and are into them, to watch the original airing increasing advertising revenue etc.. I think it's a ploy just to get the material in people's hands, and am happy that Disney is jumping into the 21st century.
- bmson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I hope that they make this available outside the us.
I hate when the Studios launches these services and only make it available for us market (us-ip) - korimickster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Networks are finally starting to see that people aren't getting all of their media from the television anymore.
It's about time... - benb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Interesting. My DVR recorded the wrong channel last week so I missed Lost. I woudn't mind setting through a few commercials if I could catch it the next day, assuming the quality was decent.
- kdehead, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4thats pretty cool.
i'll tolerate the adverts, if the programming was at reasonable quality and online.
i hope they dont do something stupid like restricting it to "U.S. only" - jnorris441, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3IMHO all networks need to follow suit. For one thing, ratings would be more preceise than the Nielsens. And they could integrate Google Adwords in the commercials. Even during the show, you could have Adwords for the products mentioned.
/not a good thing for viewers, but for advertisers it would be awesome - spyrochaete, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5"Desperate Housewives" and "Lost" would be available...
WTF?! This is Disney! Where's the free Goof Troop? - dbr_onix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3And the attempt to neuter all time-shifting capable TV devices, to force you to watch the adverts will happen when?..
- Ben - garg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4"NEW YORK (Reuters) - Walt Disney Co.'s ABC Television will offer some of its most popular shows, such as "Desperate Housewives" and "Lost," for free on the Internet in a two-month trial, the company said Monday."
from: http://money.cnn.com/2006/04/10/news/companies/disney.reut/index.htm?cnn=yes
Two month trial? Does that mean that it will become a paid service afterwards or does that mean that if they don't make money off of it in the first two months then they will ditch the idea? - happbando, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2they'll probably just stream them from the site using .swf or some similar format, that'd be the easiest way to prevent fast forwarding.
- GamingFox, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Too late...
From the article: "New technology would be aimed at preventing viewers from fast-forwarding through commercials, in an effort to keep advertisers happy." - StickyDragon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The point is that ABC has found a compromise that is good for both parties. Sure I would rather watch it without commercials, same as I would rather have free DVDs than pay for them, but I am not going to go into a store and steal them and now that ABC is offering a legal way to view their shows online, I would probably use their service rather than bit torrent.
- spidoman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Don't look a gift horse in the mouth.
It's free, you can't have everything, would you like them to give you some free popcorn as well? - shadedream, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"make available" is different than make downloadable. I think more than likely they will make these streaming files like swfs so that they have commercials, arent downloadable and arent fastforwardable.
This would still make iTms videos a viable sales idea in that you'd be paying to download them and have them on your iPod with you without commercials. To watch the free ones you'd have to be on a computer connected to the internet. - SwimTorrent, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You know, we've been doing this over at AdultSwim.com for a while now. Only we don't do as much with ads. And we actually let you watch premieres BEFORE they air on TV. So...take that, Disney!
- pemdasi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3well, on their show's website they could offer low quality versions, and sell the higher quality and video ip versions on iTunes.
- Blaze312, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3The problem I see with that idea is this;
If you can't fast forward through the commercials you wont be able to fast forward through the show either.
So say your watching the show and your player crashes, or you have to go do something else. You can't even skip to where you left off, you have to watch it from the begining. Sounds like old ASF files if you ask me. - skell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2At least this seems to be a step in the right direction. HBO, take notes. Offer this at the very least for paid subscribers who have missed a show...
- xoineg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I read that they will show the entire show with comercials and you will NOT be able to fast foward, so that's how iTunes will get some busines, by selling to people that don't want to see comercials or want to carry the show on their iPods.
- camiller, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This was my first thought. I've occasionally missed an episode on the DVR due to power outages, or my wife canceling my show to get one of hers instead #%&(#.
- MattH, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2There's a slew of these video services about to launch this month , be on the lookout for a p2p service that will sell and rent movies and give you system credit for uploading to peers .
- detrux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It did say they were using commercials, that cannot be fast forwarded through.
- kdehead, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1thats not the point. adverts are supposed to work at a subliminal level.
ever watch Derren Brown? (google for him. his shows are very VERY interesting...) - UGM2099, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1From the article: "New technology would be aimed at preventing viewers from fast-forwarding through commercials, in an effort to keep advertisers happy."
So this will be some *****-streaming method? That will be about as satisfying as watching porn on YouTube. - OsakaWilson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So far, very few shows are available outside the U.S. That sucks.
- obscured, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2lol. sucks for everyone who actually paid to download these episodes to their ipods. i'll watch them for free, thanks.
- chriskzoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's free and people complain. It's simple: Watch for free online with commercials, or pay $1.99 to watch it commercial free on the go. Seems like a good deal to me!
- aresef, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2They've been working on this for a while, I hear. I know they're trying to do it with their kids stuff over at jetix.tv.
- PoppaJr11, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It is good to finally see TV making a real step towards getting with the times. The previous steps such as MTV's Overdrive or Comedy Centrals Overload, truthfully i have no clue what they are called. All I know is that they are lame attempts to give the people what they want content on demand. If ABC does however provide this as stated in good quality for free I think its a great corporate move to curb 1 the fast fowarding of commercials via DVRs and 2 the downloading of shows off the Internet where commercials are cut out. Finally a corporation does something that makes a little sense.
- phaed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1well then you can find the show in the DC++ network
- slicedoranges, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Preventing users from fast-forwarding definitely isn't "new" technology.
- Blaze312, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2This is pretty old news... There was a post about this a few weeks back.
As long as there are still commercials then everyone still should make money all the way around. The advertisers, and iTunes would be able to sell the same shows with no commercials.
I don't understand why anyone would want to waste their time with the commercials or the DRM though. I still think torrents are far better then either of these options.
A typical torrent of Lost has around 10000 to 20000 people seeding it less then a day after the show is aired.
Legal or not, this still seems like a better way to get TV to me. The only downside to torrents is a few weeks after the show has aired it is a little harder to find. Although I suppose this is the case for network television as well. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2They're worried about people fast-forwarding through commercials but don't realize that most people probably just tune em all out anyway.
I mean really, can you even recall ONE single commercial you've seen in the past week? I can't. (unless you actually pay attention to them) - Nukem945, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's about freakin' time tv networks! Now it will be incredibly simple (and legal) for the average user to watch their favorite missed shows during the week, hopefully before the next episode airs. This will be great for tv shows like Lost and 24 which reward views who aim to watch every episode of the season.
Now we wait to see the format and quality that ABC will provide... - StickyDragon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No kidding, ABC is doing this for FREE, I don't see what all the complaints are about. Why would they stream free tv shows without commercials? They are a business afterall.
- 4815162342, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1wonder if you could use the "download embedded" firefox extension on these...
- drw2583, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You mean "sitting".
- b0m8ad1l, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2A Digg for me is a digg for Duck Tales and Darkwing Duck!
- OsakaWilson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Absolutely!
- einsfahrt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The practice of restricting by country IP is the same as not allowing movies, DVDs, etc.. simultaneous release world wide. I had the same issue when trying to view some shows from the UK. IT Crowd and Dr Who. Both restricted to UK IPs only. Of course, I can BT but so can you. The point is, the Internet is a world wide commodity and as such should be available world wide and the restrictions should cease in this case.
- rawbeartoe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1By putting commercials in, I wonder if this means they'll restrict downloads so only people in the US can download. There have been issues with commercials airing overseas before that resulted in this type of restriction.
I'm overseas, so this affects me directly... dammit. - mdweaver7485, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Digg tales wooo hooo? Ok I probably deserve a beating for that.
- frem001, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2So will this work outside the US? If so won't it cut into profits of other tv networks...not that i care, i just want to watch the latest content without having to wait a month or two for it to arrive in the UK... which is why Bittorrent is so popular in the UK. It better ***** work on my mac non of this MTV heart Microsoft *****.
- starmanjones, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1maybe because apple [jobs] operates under different more social rules than others. he operates on the insanely great scale. for a long time we wondered if the good guys were always doomed to loose to the thugs.
- dazzle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1now i know what to do with that wm recorder i installed recently
