- tonywestonuk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7An offtopic Comment, but please dont dig me down....... Is it me, or is Digg removing stories from its front page? I have just been reading Ubuntu Rescued my laptop (http://digg.com/linux_unix/Ubuntu_Rescued_My_Laptop ) .... And , suddenly, the story has vanished!. Doing a search for 'Ubuntu Laptop' and nothing appears. The only way I can get back to the story is using the direct link above. Is this a Bug, or is digg.com censoring stuff now?
- jcaino, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7smart idea...
privacy concerns out the wazoo.
if the document is scanned....and out on the web....eek.
only thing really to protect that is to wait to open it yourself. - thunderer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I've noticed a couple of my comments on stories have had the same thing happen to them. It'd be nice to know whether its censorship, or database/coding screw-ups.
- thunderer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Your aunt may not agree...
- diulei, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Cool idea, but what about packages? And dirty magazines? Hehe.
- TimDub, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Reading the CEO's comment on TC, it seems like they're taking the privacy/security concerns VERY seriously. We'll see in the long run if that pays off.
- Snowcat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It's been around for a while - okay, well, maybe a year or so. A 2005 Metafilter thread mentioning them and another company:

yea, but they aren't being asked to scan it and put it on the web.
not only that, but you can have your mail service temporarily stopped.
this could be potentially be much much worse. - diggmanchu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Hahaha on their example the guy's name is "Ron Wiener"
edit: ohh god that was immature - potatomato, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There are security undertones, of course, but this service is no less secure than just having your mail sent to your home.
They scan the front of the envelope/package so you can see if you can readily identify the piece.
If you can, and you feel confident about its contents being 'non-threatening', then why not have them open it and scan it so you can have a quick read online?
If you can't identify it, just have them send it to you unopened. Same with a bank statement, for example.
YOU control what goes 'out'.
I wonder if they'll implement an 'always throw this type of mail away' component, and other 'do-it-and-forget-it' type services. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The fees are VEEERY high. I wonder why they've not attempted to address bulk mail directly (i.e. have an option to recycle all 3rd class mail sight unseen.
Also the model of here's a picture of the front, what do you what us to do with it, seems a bit cumbersome. Just scan everything that can be scanned, flag the rest and store it all for a set period of time until the customer indicates what they want to do with it.
On a similar note, the post office has a new program where they will hold your mail and for $10 a week, send it to some other address. Great, affordable service for college students or those with summer homes. - rbond, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have noticed that this happened during yesterday once for a story , however the missing front page topic did return to the front page a few hours later. The topic actually returned to the front page at the exact same spot as it was before. The only thing that I can think of is that if it happens again is to make a note of it and the existing conditions and email to feedback@digg.com ? IMHO, Digg would not be censoring stories, especially this one. I don't see any reason for censoring this. Comments can be buried, but I don't think they would be censored unless Digg staff would see the comment especially offensive. However this heavily relied upon by the Digg users
- VesperDEM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1One slight little problem with this. Those annoying ShopWise fliers that come out every week. Those will not go to the Remote Control Mail site, they are sent to residences via the post office, and the post office is paid many many dollars to make sure they get there.
So some one traveling will still get those stupid fliers each and every week, unless they have their mail stopped. - blackbookdesign, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2
Play in front of your desk watching that porn even before it arrives! - lamestory, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1hey, thanks WEBTECH, for another spam from Techcrunch. I hope they pay you well and you aren't doing all this spamming for Arrington for free!!! Sucker!
- SamsLembas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It says you can have them foward the actual letter to you wherever you are, so that takes out a lot of the security concerns. If it is a letter from your aunt, scan it. If it is a bank statement, have them foward it.
- Topher06, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I feed unaddressed junk mail back into the delivery mail slot. I figure if mail carriers get fed up enough with carrying 40 pound of extra junk mail around, and then have to cart it back to the post office, maybe the postal carrier unions will force the postal service to stop shipping unaddressed junk mail.
I also enjoy stuffing junk mail in postage paid reply envelopes most credit card companies provide. If you shred that envelope, then the credit card company gets charged nothing, actually returning the postage paid for envelope causes the company to get charged for it. - anteyekon4myst, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Another way to spend more time on your ass.
