- nmap, on 10/12/2007, -5/+33Yarrrrr!
- PsychoticDude85, on 10/12/2007, -2/+27Awesome site, I really like the general look and feel of it as well as the extremely slick upload and file contents options.
- clinko, on 10/12/2007, -5/+27Have to agree with everything you just said
- weiran, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18I wonder how financially viable this site would be with just a few ads...
- ifonly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14yeh, no more ***** limits like rapidshare, "you have downloaded your usage limit for the hour, please wait 6 years and 11 months to download again"
rarhost ftw!! - Teh_Psyren, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13The owner of RarHost used to own RapidSearch, hence the similar designs.
- DarkPrince11, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11it does have them..2 google ads..look carefully.;)
- nmcbean, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10id guess because they force people to keep the files as compressed as possible- less space on their servers
since they allow you to see inside the files i like it - mrmidgetman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11great site but um how exactly does it stay alive?
- keesj, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11Check this out:
http://www.rapidsearch.org/
http://www.rarhost.com/
Looks like Rarhost is developed by the makers of Rapidshare (rapidshare.de search thing).. or they copied the design. - daharris, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8It amazes me how these sites operate, their bandwidth bills must be HUgeeeeeee
- edzieba, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8It's not rapidshare, therefore dugg.
- Teh_Psyren, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7"What if you set a password to your rar-files, and encrypt the filenames?
Guess you can't see what's inside the rars then, huh?"
The ability to view files in the rar is for the convenience of the end-user. If you decide to somehow hide the filenames, the only people losing out are the people you send the link to (ergo which isn't exactly a logical thing to be doing).
"Or is there some simple way to get access to the filenames, without knowing the password?
Or does the site secretly crack your rars when you upload them? (Guess not.)"
The Rar format allows you to see contents even in passworded archives.
"Looks like a good service anyway, although it has been done before."
There is no current major uploading service (RapidShare, MegaUpload, SexUploader, Uploading) with the features of Rarhost. This, coupled with the specific focus on Rars and superior end-user experience, is the site's selling point and what makes it different from the other upload services out there. - compu73rg33k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Too bad yousendit only keeps files alive for 7 days max....how ***** is that?
- caddoo, on 10/12/2007, -7/+14Have to agree with everything you just said.
- Jugalator, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Agreed -- how exactly do 2 google ads make up for these costs? :-/
- ifonly, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7around 90%+ of RS's files are .rar files too, .rar is so widely used and is the king of file compression.
- psiit, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7infact, here you go:
login= bugg
pass= rarrrmeyes
other= rarrr@dodgeit.com - Ramble, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8So, when is tar.bz host coming along?
- mv36, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Another rapidshare.de concept site....... how long before services are crippled for free users only time will tell.
Till then start click their ad's if you value the service. - peorth, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8It should be called "ARRhost" ;)
- cogitocogito, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Looks nice. According to the FAQ, however, inactive rars get deleted after two months (one month if you don't sign up). So more of a fileshare site than "storage" site.
- reagan83, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5It seems like this would be a nightmare to maintain because of all the pirated software floating around.
Great idea though - I hope it takes off - pron*, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5And yousendit is now limited to 100mb with no splits (free service) and you can't see the file names....so rarhost FTW.
- zengonzo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5
But as yet they haven't.
And while they haven't let's make clear how much we appreciate that fact. - JimmyB, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Looks to be a great resource! As much as I'd love the site to remain the way it is, I can see it turning into a Megaupload-style site with a frenzy of ads and popups. These sites have to pay their server and bandwidth bills somehow.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8Ballhost?
- compu73rg33k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Kind of like Rapidshare, megaupload, and the other slue of upload sites?
- dadrew1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"...we offer much more than just basic file hosting, our system has advanced information about each rar file, therefore we have decided to specialize in .rar files, for example you can see what the archive contains before you download, ensuring it contains the files you want..."
So there software knows how to get the info about the .rar files easily... there ya go for question #3
#2 is answered by the subtle Google ads that are on their space - they do what advertising should do - be integrated into the site well. - Teh_Psyren, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The RARs are not decompressed, but their contents are read.
- Brettb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4slick, clean, and overall a great idea.
- tvaughn05, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Really cool, good idea, but I wonder if the digg effect will do something to them.
They only have 54 rars uploaded right now.. - drg73, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8arrrrr matey .. rars are not for landlubbers!
- keesj, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Doesn't work in Safari, nice idea though
- Syntaxis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+31.- The captcha feature annoys the hell outta me, they oughta take something more readable for security.
2.- Nice idea but strangely confusing as to how this is going to be profitable.
3.- RAR only? Why? To set a clear profile or something? Storage reasons? Why not allow ZIP-files too?
I'm confused. But I like it. - Craga89, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Great site! I'll definately be using this in the future. Very nice overall design and upload concept. Nice work!
- gmc14, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4From their FAQ:
"you can upload any files you have legal rights to, you may not use our service to upload material such as files subject to copyright laws. please read our tos for more information."
Good luck. - hansamurai, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Dugg for not linking to some crappy blog.
- mrmidgetman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4so is this site more set up for sharing files to the public because there doesn't seem to be a search. Or is it set up for storing your own files and maybe giving a friend the link?
- jerrygofixit, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4"Forbidden
You don't have permission to access / on this server.
Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request. "
this is what I recieved when I checked back at the site after uploading 87 of 95mb when it locked up.... that sucks!!! - socokoolaid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Maybe its a scheme by the RAR people to thwart the ever growing ZIP community. Windows OS built in ZIP support, but not RAR, what a jipp.
- Joe544, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@syntaxis
If it was to host zip files to it would be called rarandziphost, rar sounds more leet.
@everyone commenting on the design
one of the owners made the design for rapidsearch and rar host, they are NOT ran by the same people - ifonly, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Hang on, my mate Steve says he can give me a copy, perhaps he can upload it himself too.
- psiit, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Rarrrr!
Someone got a bugmenot for this? - TheWriteGuy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Sounds cool and I'm looking to sign up. But why only the RAR format?
- DigeratiPrime, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5you realize any site can implement the rapidshare 'limiter' any time they wish too?
- dodgyc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3rapidsearch isn't made by the makers of rapidshare.de, it just uses google to search for websites with rapidshare links on them.
- andreytcho, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I think it is going to become like the german file sharing website which charges people for the number of downloads they can get per link. If it is going to be only google sponsored it is not going to go far. But it is perfect for illegal stuff :) too bad there is no search yet.
- Joe544, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2yes and look at the limit of mihd.net
RH FTW - compu73rg33k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Also becuase RARs offer more flexibility and features. e.g. password protecting. One of the neat things about rarhost is the download page will tell you IF there is a password; so if you don't know the password you don't waste your time downloading and trying to extract it.
