- haooken, on 10/12/2007, -0/+23But carriers will still have ridiculous fees that won't be consistent with the faster connection. I.E. you be able to run up a thousand-dollar bill in a few minutes.
- EtherGnat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Cellular data access doesn't have to be on your phone. You can get it built in to your laptop, use a PCMCIA card, or use your high-speed phone as a modem (bluetooth or tethered).
- EtherGnat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Like cellphones aren't bad enough. Now we've got people doing e-mail on the highways. ;)
- eaasness, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8What ever happened to WiMAX?
- haooken, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Sure about that "unlimited"? Be sure to check the fine print. I think you're still limited to 5GB down a month.
- TopBanana, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6A fast cellphone connection works great as a bluetooth modem. I can connect to client machines from (almost) anywhere in the country. Even better than working from home, I can work where I like :)
- credo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I remember when they were promoting 3G's peak theoretical bandwidth - something as high as a couple of megabits IIRC. But that was never gonna happen, because none of the providers *had* to provide that speed. 3G became a buzzword, and bandwidth was stuck at narrowband.
- EuroMarkus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4They're not talking about cellphones -- it's PC Cards.
I'm on Cingular's 3G PC Card at Panera with my laptop, and
it's actually more reliable than their free wifi network.
The speed is surprisingly fast, when the freeway is a parking lot I can
monitor my servers, and answer email -- billable time.
BTW, not thousand dollar bills -- I get unlimited for $59.00/month. - dalio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Is your reluctance tied to inherent limitations of mobile devices, or is it a UI thing? Could someone build a phone w/ an interface that you would want to do most of your interwebbing on? I can sort of imagine that such a combo of hw/sw might be possible, but I certainly can't imagine what it would look or feel like...
- EuroMarkus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I only touch the keys when my car is not planning to move for a
few minutes -- damn Boston traffic.
My PC CARD works on Both HSDPA and GPRS.
And it's really unlimited -- Europe and Canada, you have to pay extra.
I do about 500Mb/day on it. - dextroz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2yeah, ***** capitalism - greedy turds!
- dextroz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2BTW, what's stopping you from installing skype on your cellphone and ditching the voice-plan completely?
- TopBanana, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Cellphones with HSDPA are also appearing on the market.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well in the usa we dont have anything cool like that , because we are in the land of the free, and we think we are better than everywhere else in the world. Its to bad we couldnt spend some time on faster internet.
- amoeba, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1We have HSDPA here in New Zealand too. 3G phones are becoming more and more popular. There's a tiny new vodafone 'vodem' product you plug into your USB for 3G broadband access anywhere. $NZ 29.95 p/month (1G cap).
Still, I'd like to see free, global uncapped wireless access for all. It's just a dream but it's a possibility!
"the times they are a changing" - rupaw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Guys,
this is really old news for people in Germany or Austria. We got HSDPA already a year ago, and it works great. High-speed Internet all over the country, no matter if you're in your car or in a park or at Starbucks...
And the costs here are very reasonable. I pay 30 EUR (around 36 USD) for my HSDPA card and have a download volume of 1 GB. That's not much, but all I need because at home I have broadband anyway. For 10 bucks more I could get 1 GB more...
The card itself was free! Not bad, ehhh? - Saiing, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1My cellphone currently works at 2.4Mbps with real unlimited data transfer for a flat fee. Is this supposed to excite me?
- election, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1when a guy in sales and marketing asks me the difference between hsdpa and wifi and evdo, i hate explaining it so i just shootem this: http://wireless-internet-access-provider.com
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1But that WOULD be consistent: You'd be getting same amount of data per dollar; you'd just be getting it (and paying for it) faster.
The fact is, you DON'T want a bill that's per byte. - EuroMarkus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1
No, but RTFA, just might -- not about cell phones. - Alternate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is pretty funny seeing this!
Here in South Africa, we of all countrys have had two of our four network providers on 3G networks. Video calling is also fun! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Why? There's more time, money, and effort involved with wires"
Because over-the-air bandwidth is already scarce, and yet we see vendors finding new ways to waste it with ***** like "video" to your cell phone. Bandwidth should be for MAKING CALLS, with the secondary possibility of wireless Internet access.
Any load we can take off the finite airborne electromagnetic spectrum, WE SHOULD. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1been rolled out in south korea for a while, in places in europe for about a year :-)
call me old fashioned but my cell/mobile phone is used primarily for calling/sms'ing people and the occasional picture of something (i have a sony ericsson V600i), if i want to use the internet/view videos/email i use the laptop or my desktop. - crackintosh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1thats ridiculous. they will make it affordable and relevant. They need people to use it, but people don't really need to use it.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Okay so they've got speed, howabout ping times? That's always been one showstopper for mobile gaming.
- EtherGnat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"BTW, what's stopping you from installing skype on your cellphone and ditching the voice-plan completely?"
Only the terms of service. Skype works great on my Windows Mobile Samsung i730 and laptop + EVDO card. - tmcdigg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1how about a practical price... like DIRT CHEAP!! $19.95 with no taxes/fees/surcharges!
OR CONTRACTS!! - yuga, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1In the Philippines, we enjoy mobile internet via 3G phones at a very low $0.40 per hour. :)
http://www.yugatech.com/blog/?p=1320 - RegisteredUser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0> They should be spending their time and money on upgrading the
> landlines first.
Why? There's more time, money, and effort involved with wires.. Digging ditches, laying down cable, and so on. And as others have pointed out, you're not limited to surfing the web on your phone. Kyocera makes a router that accepts a PCMCIA card. Just pop in a Verizon EVDO card and you're set.
http://www.kyocera-wireless.com/kr1-router/
I'm sure there will be more routers similar to this in the future as wireless broadband becomes more accessible. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1No *****. Besides, 3G has been bandied about for years and years. It was used for GSM products in the past; now all of a sudden HSDPA is "3G"? *****. Either 3G never arrived, or HSDPA is 4G.
- EuroMarkus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0
I use Skype when I'm at a table somewhere.
My Nokia 6600 is big enough, I think people would stare if I
walked down the street with my laptop in my had, routing my
Skype calls.
Makes the old "bricks" seem tiny ;-) - petermoffat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0True, but we also have bandwidth costs that are crazy, you really can rack up a hundred bucks in a few minutes..
3G w/ HSDPA are awesome, but the data plans need to be fixed, cell providers are not telkom, so stop acting like bandwidth hogging land line telco's! - misterpony, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2I just can't get into the idea of doing the majority of my interwebbing on my phone. What's the practical use of a 3.6 Mbps cell phone? They should be spending their time and money on upgrading the landlines first.
