Introducing Digg Dialogg!
Check out the first Digg Dialogg with Nancy Pelosi. More guests to be announced soon!
Pownce could finally add private messaging to Digg!!
bigthawt.com — Private messaging has been the gaping hole in the Digg experience since launch. How can you expect to sustain a community, where members can ’t contact each other? The same interface principles used in Gmail to implement Google Chat could be applied to Digg. A Pownce buddy list, populated with your Digg friends, could appear right on the home page.
- 858 diggs
- digg it
- hockyfight, on 10/11/2007, -31/+4Sounds tight, everything else has an Instant Messenger built into it, Myspace, Facebook, even Joost has one for goodness sake. Digg couldnt possibly be behind the times
- Ninjab3ar, on 10/11/2007, -4/+33Did you just say 'tight'?...
- mc7winkie, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10Don't worry. I speak jive.
- jrbrewin, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2what, like from the 1930's prohibition era?
- mc7winkie, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10Don't worry. I speak jive.
- fkr3, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7Digg is way behind the times.... defacto standard features are still completely missing like deleting a comment, or even viewing your recent comments - every other site has these basic features.
The front page is usually behind the times too, it feels like "reddit already did it" with the stories I'm seeing on digg these days. I don't know if it's because digg users are slower or what but it looks like digg is just yesterday's news from reddit.- jrbrewin, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8click profile, click commented on. There's your comment history. bravo.
spot on with the reddit comment though. reddit also loads quicker, has a better commenting system, and doesn't log people out every 3 minutes.- fkr3, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Clicked profile, clicked commented on, I see a list of stories. Where's my comment history?
Oh right, I have to go into a story and then go ctrl+f myself.- kosmoX, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3If you're using firefox, just type /username. Quick search.
- mattmcm, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Kosmox, that doesn't work if your comment is a reply to another one, since it wouldn't have been loaded along with the page thanks to the nifty ajax features.
- kosmoX, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2It does if you have your global settings set to automatically expand all threads. Although, if you have dugg down a comment that you replied to, then you're SOL.
- AmazingAndrex, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Lol... "f myself". =P
- fkr3, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Clicked profile, clicked commented on, I see a list of stories. Where's my comment history?
- hockyfight, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1It was meant sarcastically...
- jrbrewin, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8click profile, click commented on. There's your comment history. bravo.
- LordofShadows, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Oh snap that's sweet.
- Ninjab3ar, on 10/11/2007, -4/+33Did you just say 'tight'?...
- kevinrose, on 10/11/2007, -13/+287Give is a little time -- very big updates coming to digg.
- kingkilr, on 10/11/2007, -74/+15If you need an extra coder, I'll volunteer to help free of charge. I code PHP+MySQL with Ajax using prototype.js if you want me feel free to pull my email out of your db.
- LordofShadows, on 10/11/2007, -1/+36Digg buries people who claim things.
- Markers, on 10/11/2007, -0/+19Digg can smell fear....
- funkychikensays, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1lmao
- LordofShadows, on 10/11/2007, -1/+36Digg buries people who claim things.
- kenvsryu, on 10/11/2007, -8/+100The comment system still needs help.
- noodlez, on 10/11/2007, -1/+22looks like the comment editing system does too :)
- seanthebond, on 10/11/2007, -27/+6Could we have the Top Digg users back? I haven't seen DigitalGopher and such posting a lot lately, and it really made people want to submit more often because they felt as though they were accomplishing something. Heck, I had a friend who came on here everyday to submit stuff, but now comes on every once in a while and doesn't submit anything because he doesn't feel there is a reason to.
- Ninjab3ar, on 10/11/2007, -27/+4Enjoy your iPhone Kevin!! Dont let the people in line rough you up. And tell Alex to stop being a bitch. :)
- jrbrewin, on 10/11/2007, -5/+7alex is the only one that actually speaks any ounce of sense on diggnation.. kevin's the bitch.. steve jobs' bitch.
- nreynolds, on 10/11/2007, -31/+4KEVIN MISSPELLED "US." What a looser.
- denhamcoote, on 10/11/2007, -3/+10Pity you can't spell either, loser.
"Looser" is something you would say about your mom... Like "She is looser than a $2 whore..."- pianojuggler4, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1That or he actually is a complete moron, but I believe the former is correct :)
- denhamcoote, on 10/11/2007, -3/+10Pity you can't spell either, loser.
- rolosworld, on 10/11/2007, -3/+34"Give is a little time" == milliseconds?
- mikefitz2, on 10/11/2007, -16/+6hi kevin pls fix comment system thx.
- Inferno52386, on 10/11/2007, -7/+2What would really be nice is an invite to pownce already. I feel sad and left out...
actually, I feel more bored then anything. - jrbrewin, on 10/11/2007, -11/+3"Give is a little time -- very big updates coming to digg" go go, children. your blind mac loving god hath spoken.
Kevin, any timescale on when we might expect a pownce / zune / mocha / fecal brown colourscheme?- rpgmaker, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Look original to me, far from the bubbles and reflections of the web2.0 hype.
- canewediggit, on 10/11/2007, -11/+2the big news- facebook bought digg, pownce to serve as im client.......
- canewediggit, on 10/11/2007, -13/+2the big news - facebook bought digg, pownce to serve as im client
- canewediggit, on 10/11/2007, -6/+1sorry for double post. first comment didn't appear after 2 page refreshes so i thought it didn't take.
- bradpurchase, on 06/12/2008, -0/+2...It wasn't worth it.
- canewediggit, on 10/11/2007, -6/+1sorry for double post. first comment didn't appear after 2 page refreshes so i thought it didn't take.
- mrhaines, on 10/11/2007, -4/+17More changes to digg? Man where have the days of sweet minimalism gone? Its turning into another "yahoo"
- mrmdc, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11digg has never been considered minimalist.
reddit, *thats* minimalist. - ScottMaximus1, on 10/11/2007, -7/+2Reddit also ***** rocks
- ScottMaximus1, on 10/11/2007, -7/+2thanks digg posting system!
- mrmdc, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11digg has never been considered minimalist.
- sigginike90, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Discussion should and is a big part of digg and it's needs some fix. What i would also add is the ability to take the info or article you want to submit, and post that and a link to where it came from so i can browse stories in a global theme and not have to go to a site infested with aids... no wait i mean ads. And stuff like that, same with videos which is coming along nicely. And that would make it easier to submit original content! Such as videos and articles or new written by yourself. Another problem is that many copies of the same news articles are posted, which could be fixed with some way not to miss any news, and personalized home page or sumthin, with stuff like "what you might be interested in:" and like a bunch of news of the past week or sutmhin which you can scroll through quickly, AND WIDGETS!!! no just kidding...
- cosequin, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1the digg ecmascript is awfully slow on firefox, but not slow in ie6. Go fig....
- rockingrhino, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6How about some hints Kevin. Mystery doesn't make Diggers happy. LOL
- clos, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2there are always "big things" coming to digg
- Glugory, on 10/11/2007, -4/+20Well it's good to know that even guys who have $60 million have problems with grammar too.
- corporalclegg24, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Kevin, learn how to type proper grammar!
- kingkilr, on 10/11/2007, -74/+15If you need an extra coder, I'll volunteer to help free of charge. I code PHP+MySQL with Ajax using prototype.js if you want me feel free to pull my email out of your db.
- MikeonTV, on 10/11/2007, -30/+6Dugg for Kevin Rose commenting.
- merdiesel, on 10/11/2007, -3/+34If Kevin Rose commented on a story about jumping off a bridge would you digg it?..
- mrmdc, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9I'm pretty sure a lot of people here would.
- StealthTomato, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2I'd probably digg the story about jumping off the bridge just because I can. Or suggest jumping off a bridge. Y'know, either way.
- mrmdc, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9I'm pretty sure a lot of people here would.
- scanman20, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9Sure you just don't wanna blow him instead?
- randomgeek, on 10/11/2007, -3/+6So. because he dugg a story that is basically nothing but wishful thinking, and then the man that owns both the product that the story was about and digg itself comments and basically confirms what the story said, that means he wants to blow him?
Jesus Christ, grow the ***** up.
- merdiesel, on 10/11/2007, -3/+34If Kevin Rose commented on a story about jumping off a bridge would you digg it?..
- LordofShadows, on 10/11/2007, -10/+4Time bah, put a link to digg.com/phpBB and be done with it.
- luke16, on 10/11/2007, -5/+4sounds good but i dont think i would use it much. digg to me has always been about up to date news, gadgets, political storys etc. However, i wouldnt mind a disscussion section...
- PATSCRU, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Umm.....aren't you commenting in a discussion section right now?
- PATSCRU, on 10/11/2007, -2/+88IM on digg? great, now the Ron Paul people can harass me in realtime.
- kenvsryu, on 10/11/2007, -11/+6Ladies, now you can contact me easily, pretty please.
- mrhaines, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Um, I think you are mistaken...there aren't any ladies on digg.
- richardiscool, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2What about Leah Culver? *rubs thighs*
- mrhaines, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Um, I think you are mistaken...there aren't any ladies on digg.
- punchingjudy, on 10/11/2007, -2/+35How long will it take to get the first "NO UR WRONG ASHOLE!" message?
- StealthTomato, on 10/11/2007, -0/+13Using a complex algorithm borrowed from Google, I'd say anywhere between .03 and .05 seconds.
- skyer, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9If the site would be able to keep up with the load time, that would be great.
- stronglikedan, on 10/11/2007, -7/+2Buried as lame cuz I still can't register :(
- Beakerz, on 10/11/2007, -10/+5this...is...DIGG!!!!!!!!!!!
- therealgeddylee, on 10/11/2007, -2/+51Is private messaging on Digg really all that necessary? I would imagine more flaming would be going on then anything.. I think the idea of a 'community' doesn't involve private messaging, that's why it's called a community. Commenting/discussion systems and collaboration represent community, not private messaging. Still, why not?
- 13thKid, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3exactly. and add to all of that the friends feature in digg is to keep track of people who digg like you, or digg things that are interesting to you, not people you necessarily know. with a chat feature, the flame wars could get even more personal, and i think it might end up facilitating more spamming and scamming of digg.
instead, how about more news and less noise on my social news site: digg is NOT a social bookmarking site. up there, at the top of this page, where all of these _stories_ are categorized, it says NEWS.
- AndrewDB, on 01/10/2008, -10/+2To Kevin in the first Comment:
Great news.- jaderobbins, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7While this commenting system may have its flaws, the one thing it did add is the ability to reply to specific comments so that the general comments are gummed up with crap. Simply click on "Reply to kevinrose's comment" to not annoy all of us. kthnx
- ZorboMan, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2But then he won't get his comment noticed by everyone!
- jaderobbins, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7While this commenting system may have its flaws, the one thing it did add is the ability to reply to specific comments so that the general comments are gummed up with crap. Simply click on "Reply to kevinrose's comment" to not annoy all of us. kthnx
- mcflynnthm, on 10/11/2007, -1/+32Why exactly would I want to message my fellow Diggers?
- dagnabbit, on 10/11/2007, -0/+15So you can tell them, hey digg my story and I'll digg yours, and we can all totally game the system, duh.
- gilgongo, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1I love you I raelly do.
- GRTWHT, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Well, glad to see that at least one person gets it - add messaging and you can write off all 'controversial' topic news as the bury brigade will be able to coordinate their attacks easier and faster. Combine that with the 'agenda' groups and professional submitters and we can forget about digg being useful and relevant.
- AncientWeird, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3More importantly, why would I want my fellow Diggers to message me?
- jd33, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Who you callin Digger?
- dagnabbit, on 10/11/2007, -0/+15So you can tell them, hey digg my story and I'll digg yours, and we can all totally game the system, duh.
- Scribblargh, on 10/11/2007, -4/+1(15:51:49) -L- [#digg] Welcome to #digg Quakenet's unofficial digg.com IRC Channel.
- LordofShadows, on 10/11/2007, -0/+18There are 0 people in this channel.
- Jynx97, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7Should adverts for digg wares be made to look like news on the front page?
- Light11, on 10/11/2007, -0/+59"Private messaging has been the gaping hole in the Digg experience "
i really dont come on digg to pm people - TSCheredar, on 10/11/2007, -0/+14Top diggers is a bad Idea. Also, IM is not really essential for me to socialize on digg. Perhaps you should consider revising the user profiles instead.
- willwander, on 10/11/2007, -9/+3Pownce?
Did you mean: Ponce- idugcoal, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Nope. He meant pownce. I'm certain of it. GIYF.
- sbalchemy, on 10/11/2007, -9/+2To Kevin in the first Comment:
"Give is a little time"
I love the show but that saddens me. - MikeonTV, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2I have been a member for about 12 hours but cannot invite anyone. How come Kevin????
- motherwell, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4I dunno, but send me an invite when you get some!
- NessTheHero, on 10/11/2007, -0/+15I don't get why tech blogs refer to things as ____-killers. There won't be a facebook killer anytime soon and if there is, it will be something to behold.
I guess the definition of "killing" changed from "removing from existance completely" to "doing something slightly better even though they are still around." - tehzombie, on 10/11/2007, -0/+29I've always found that I don't actually even read the members names, I just read the comments, get a laugh and then carry on. I personally believe that the messenger would be completely pointless for this site, since I find its community driven, but not exactly a full community like one you'd have on a message forum.
That's just my opinion.- tagnarth, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7I agree. I've always felt like social networking wasn't meant to be part of dig. User names and icons are tiny and do not really call attention to themselves. There's plenty of networking sites out there where people can talk and talk and talk. Here we talk through comments.
- canewediggit, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6agreed. if i wanted to swap messages/im with you guys, i'd put that info in my profile. why am i on digg more than any social network? digg doesn't bug the ***** out of me with member messages/comments/spam/etc.
if digg is going to try and be another 'social networking' site, i'm gone. i have too many messages to deal with already.
- canewediggit, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6agreed. if i wanted to swap messages/im with you guys, i'd put that info in my profile. why am i on digg more than any social network? digg doesn't bug the ***** out of me with member messages/comments/spam/etc.

- chuckpenzone, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8I think Kev's been spending too much time with his cat.
- LordofShadows, on 10/11/2007, -9/+2lol, kevin has a cat? hilarious... gay...
- StealthTomato, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7SERIOUSLY? OMG, HE MUST BE GAY HE HAS A CAT ANYONE WHO HAS A CAT IS GAY!
Honestly, your logic is the definition of fail.- LordofShadows, on 10/11/2007, -7/+2Yeah you're right, cats have always been the epitome of manliness...
- fkr3, on 10/11/2007, -6/+2I have two cats. And a whopping great penis your mum likes to slobber on.
- LordofShadows, on 10/11/2007, -7/+2Yeah you're right, cats have always been the epitome of manliness...
- StealthTomato, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7SERIOUSLY? OMG, HE MUST BE GAY HE HAS A CAT ANYONE WHO HAS A CAT IS GAY!
- LordofShadows, on 10/11/2007, -9/+2lol, kevin has a cat? hilarious... gay...
- cheerybounce, on 10/11/2007, -3/+11Private messages would end up with nothing else but abuse. There's IRC and most of you guys are not worth chatting at.
- willwander, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Digg is just a place to bitch
I wouldn't actually want to make that personal via an IM client- mrhaines, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Agreed...if people could contact me it would take all the fun away from trolling.
- directsun, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2"me like" = Sample message
- arras, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7it would be a neat idea, I guess. but then again, I don't feel a need to talk to any of you
- se7en11, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Why did you just post that then? I often read my own posts and think I'm so great and insightful. I'm just glad to find I'm not the only one... :-P
- magic6435, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7pms? how about they fix this POS comment system first.
- cawpin, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1It actually seems to be working fine now. I think they must've changed how the "Reply To" options show up.
- Topher06, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10Why do you need private messaging on Digg? You have numerous IM clients out there, if you really need to communicate with Digg users, then just let Digg users publish their IM tags, or put in a system where you request to IM tag. Digg is a social website, but it doesn't need private communication, there are other websites that are dedicated to that (i.e. like Facebook or MySpace perhaps). Digg doesn't have to be everything for everyone, and in fact, most websites that become jack of all trade websites lose visitors, not gain them.
- theNthDoctor, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5My comment is coming from the point of view of a user that mainly participates in the political sections of Digg ... I don't think we're ready for this yet. Not until there are other public community features where differences can be expressed and resolved in the community. Right now we have too much name-calling and hatred in those parts of Digg, with people standing firmly by their beliefs without much encouragement to behave ourselves. Still, my POV might be a bit narrow because I see Digg as a community of open-ended research: and that's more than just link-spotting, that's a social institution.
Also from a technical standpoint, they have to work on their existing Javascripts a bit, it's already a pretty brutal CPU hit just to vote on a comment. - archer75, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Why the hell would we want private messaging on digg? So people can bitch at us privately? I can see no good coming from this.
- cnowacek, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2I don't see the necessity or even desire to send messages to other Diggers. A discussion is a no-brainer, but that's what the comment threads are for. This really has very little relevance to the social bookmarking model.
- ThirdPrize, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Fab, as long as all your friends are on Digg. Or want to install ANOTHER IM client. What does this one do that all the others don't?
- Rethcir, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2What does Pownce do that AIM didn't do 10 years ago?
- uptown, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5reach digg's frontpage?
- JimmyDushku, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Stop trying to make this thing sound revolutionary.
- mariachi, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12"Give is a little time -- very big updates coming to digg"
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE make a Pownce section so I can ignore this *****. Look at me, I'm a Powncer! I have a Pownce sweatshirt! I got Pownced! Powncenation rulz! Teeheehee!
Seriously, this Pownce ***** isn't news, and it isn't cute. In fact, it's really starting too look desperate. Please stop promoting this garbage.- ijustam, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6We very much need a "Cliche" section. You could lump stories about the iPhone, 300, among other things in there.
- pyry, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2It looks like someone is learning from the iPhone-hype that you need to incessantly talk about a new product/site before you release it to the general public, that way you ensure that you get a crapload of users regardless of product quality.
- mattsaw, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Great! Now I'm going to get 'please Digg this' spam when go on Digg on top of the spam I normally get!
- AladinSane, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Yeah, CLEARLY what Digg needs is a more convenient way for the various groups of DiggThugs to run around burying each other's posts. It's already to the point where most threads are absolutely nonsensical, as two-thirds of the replies are Buried for no reason other than one group of morons targets posts by some other group of morons for instant Burial.
- nubtard, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Use an open messaging standard and crush MSN/AIM/YAHOO/CRAP/ETC/ETC/ETC.
- jeffyjones, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5***** Digg users. :) I don't wanna talk to any of you down digging bastards. ;)
- NikoKun, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2oh good... so instead of people flaming each other in the comments section, now they can fill up each other's mailboxes with flame wars... XD
- GreedKills, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I'll be sure to IM Kevin Rose to fix the damn search
- TerraFire99, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0its not hard to find a pm script. diggs lazy.
- itslallu, on 10/11/2007, -3/+0Very Good Sound wow.....
http://www.lallunepal.com- broeks, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Do you think this will actually work?
- livejamie, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1gaping hole? really?
- StanleyReturns, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Ahh...why dont they just add private messaging to Digg?
- Ascendancy5, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0This is awesome, I've been waiting forever for this.
Digg is coming to a city (and computer) near you! Check out all the details on our
