- Shogi, on 07/20/2008, -8/+666Cams always suck anyway.
- solesoul, on 07/20/2008, -21/+593This is a silly article. "Man Breaks Law, Gets Arrested."
- iJessicaRabbit, on 07/20/2008, -4/+535"A few hours later the police went to the man’s house and conducted a search where they say they found pirate movies on DVD. "
Good thing they didn't find his cowboy movies. - username7410, on 07/20/2008, -5/+277What's next?
"Man Gets Speeding Ticket on Way to see 'The Dark Knight'" or...
"Man doesn't see 'The Dark Knight' because of prior engagement"
This really isn't interesting or relevant to anything. - Skab, on 07/20/2008, -5/+1561. This ***** is crazy.
2. Cams suck. - MrTea, on 07/20/2008, -1/+151Agreed. Now dvd screeners on the other hand...
- LemonDefragger, on 07/20/2008, -4/+152Why would anyone want to see the DARK KNIGHT on a ***** cam? Pay for the screen.
- LimeParrot, on 07/20/2008, -4/+123Specially for a movie like this (half the fun in the special effects and sound!)
- Navitron, on 07/20/2008, -22/+137I just got back from watching The dark knight at imax, man was that a good movie. Anyone who would watch a cam over seeing it properly and I dunno? MAYBE SUPPORTING A GOOD MOVIE. Is a complete retard in my opinion.
- Jasonstech, on 07/20/2008, -6/+106That is the most ***** up thing about this story. I can see the police arriving at the theater if called, writing the man a citation or even arrest. But how the ***** does this singular non violent action constitute getting a search warrant and invading the man's house. Holy *****...
So what if you take a picture with a cell phone; next thing you know your house is raided by S.W.A.T. - yourmartdotnet, on 07/20/2008, -15/+110it's funny that they crack down on the cammers when the really good rips come from theater employees. Ever wonder how you find DVD-rip files when the movie is in theaters and hasn't been released yet. MPAA has never said ***** about the fact that it's people in their own industry who release these things in the first place. If the bastards didn't charge so much most of us would still be going to the theaters, hell I'd even pay $10.00-15.00 to download/watch a new release in the comfort of my own home, but will I pay $30.00+ for 2 people to see a movie in theater....***** NO!
- digitalmob, on 07/20/2008, -1/+93They were hiding in the shadows.
- Jasonstech, on 07/20/2008, -3/+77The law seems a bit stretched. I mean a person caught on the street with drugs like marijuana or crack cocaine; the police are not given an immediate right for a search warrant.
It is a sad state of affairs when a non violent crime, warrants a search warrant for private property.
I am surprised by the response of diggers. As an American I find it horrifying that such action was taken. Arrest the man, sure, sue him, whatever. But a search warrant for a crime that he was yet convicted of; ***** That. - Ubertastic, on 07/20/2008, -8/+78What about his ninja movies?
- AsSubtleAsABrik, on 07/20/2008, -15/+77http://www.mininova.org/search/?search=the+dark+kn ...
Looks like they're doing a good job stopping cammers. Making an example of one of them really seems to have been the trick.
Not to mention they are breaking like practically every sales record ever, so how much could the piracy really be hurting them? - ralphthemagi, on 07/20/2008, -4/+60I'll never understand why the MPAA cares about cams. It's not lost profits. I can't imagine there is a single person who watches the cam of a movie, who would have spent the $10 to go see it had there been no cam. If anything, I can see only two purposes that a cam version floating around the internet serves:
1) Someone who saw the movie, but missed something for some reason and wanted to see that blip again. (probably not that many of these, too much work to go through to download the whole thing for 30 seconds)
2) Somone who wasn't going to see the movie anyway, but saw the ***** came, realized how awesome the movie was, and then went out to go see it in a theater 15 minutes later.
Cams are so *****. What is the point of arresting people who cam movies? What is the point of caming in the first place, other than for the e-fame of being the first to upload to TPB? - kataztrophy, on 07/20/2008, -4/+56There's a lot of hatred for bootleggers nowadays.
- saleem, on 07/20/2008, -1/+45ninjas don't need shadows to hide.
- shadekeiko, on 07/20/2008, -0/+44Just FYI for all of those cammers out there...movie theatre employees won't turn a blind eye to this kind of thing (even if they do enjoy torrents or warez themselves). Why? Because I know at the theatre I work at, we get $500 for turning in a cammer. Other theaters probably have similar incentives.
- subxero37, on 07/20/2008, -3/+47I got a cam of Iron Man to see a few of my favorite scenes again.
But it doesn't detract from the fact that I saw Iron Man four ***** times. That's over $30. Don't tell me I'm killing their profits. - badfish0116, on 07/20/2008, -13/+56Why So Serious?
- inactive, on 07/20/2008, -10/+51If you don't have enough money to buy food for your family, and you steal some food to feed your family, you get some sympathy from me.
If you are stealing movies because you can't afford to see the latest batman movie, well... Somehow the poverty argument doesn't work there... - holymrack, on 07/20/2008, -3/+40AXXO doesn't CAM, fool
- Hamsterpotpies, on 07/20/2008, -5/+411. Fail
2. The cam versions out suck
3. IMAX FTW! - Ajajadude, on 07/20/2008, -3/+35Yeah, and have you noticed how expensive it is to go see a movie? It's no wonder movies break records every year.
Anyway, this article isn't too clear about whether or not this guy turns around sells the recording of the movie or not, but, I'd rather have the likes of the MPAA go after people trying to make money off of their movies than going after people who download a movie. - letherial, on 07/20/2008, -5/+34The trial was immediately held the next day. The jury, chosen by the MPAA, found the man guilty before hearing his defense, The judge, bought by the MPAA sentenced him to death by hanging only hours later...
He is now pending charges of terrorist activity. When asked how they will prosecute him, the media was told that a subpoena to the devil was in place and he shall be extradited if and when charges are brought against him. - Elliuotatar, on 07/21/2008, -2/+29Wanna know something really ***** up?
The law makes it a felony to bring a recoridng device into a theatre. You don't have to record. And guess what most people's cellphones are capable of?
That's right, the MPAA has made almost every one of us a felon. - shownoregrets, on 07/20/2008, -0/+26i'm going to make this pencil...disappear
- Cndor, on 07/20/2008, -8/+34*****! They got one of us. Now they're gonna ask something for exchange.
- sugarazor, on 07/20/2008, -3/+29And those kids won't just won't get off your lawn?
- locojones, on 07/20/2008, -0/+26Wshs - Ask and yee shall receive:
18 USC 113 as amended by the Family Entertainment and Copyright Act of 2005:
"Sec. 2319(B) - Any person who, without the authorization of the copyright owner, knowingly uses or attempts to use an audiovisual recording device to transmit or make a copy of a motion picture or other audiovisual work protected under title 17, or any part thereof, from a performance of such work in a motion picture exhibition facility, shall--
`(1) be imprisoned for not more than 3 years, fined under this title, or both; or
`(2) if the offense is a second or subsequent offense, be imprisoned for no more than 6 years, fined under this title, or both." - potisreallygood, on 07/20/2008, -4/+29So, if you get caught taping a movie, they search your house and take your property? Whats next, blow up your house so it can never be used to support piracy again. Maybe in 5 years when the Iraq vets start freaking.
- Klisk, on 07/20/2008, -19/+43I can't believe all the people SUPPORTING the MPAA. How ridiculous. I know you same people are downloading music and not defending the RIAA. But somehow movies are different?
How?
You pay 15 dollars for a ticket. The sound is distorted if you have good hearing, though it seems most movie goers are deaf and don't notice the horrible wall of digital glitch.
Furthermore, the screen is often out of focus, you have to deal with PEOPLE... I don't want to see a movie in front of someone who is kicking my seat, behind someone with horrible BO, and next to a pair of people texting/talking on their cellphone for the entire movie.
Furthermore, god forbid you want some popcorn, because that will set you back another 12 dollars.
I'd rather wait for the DVD or download the cam so I can enjoy the film and not leave early because the equipment and surroundings are rubbish.
Don't try to throw iMax at me, either. I saw the first half hour of Dark Knight in an imax and walked out because of people being loud and obnoxious. Nevermind that the screen was too big to even see and the sound was complete crap. How can I, a college student, afford a better audio system than a movie theater? Ugh. Maybe they have it EQ'd wrong.
Regardless. I'm not paying 28 dollars to be miserable watching a movie. The MPAA can eat ***** until the theaters they license their movies to (AMC/Loewes) get their ***** together. Or, at least, until more places like the Alamo Drafthouse in Texas pop up. (Note: I live in NJ, so that's not even an option for me. I just know via word of mouth.)
Case in point, I have no sympathy for the film industry. Bootleggers get my seal of approval. I want to watch a movie the way I know I'll enjoy it -- Alone. - nullx42, on 07/20/2008, -1/+25You cant enforce morality.
- notoneofus, on 07/20/2008, -0/+24I was in a mall in Beijing where dupe DVDs were being made off of Academy screeners (the discs sent to Academy members for voting). Now, where did those come from?
- alexra, on 07/20/2008, -3/+26pay to see this movie, its worth it, this movie needs to be seen on a big screen, camera version just won't cut it. Another thing was it really neccesary for the police to search his home.
- bdickason, on 07/20/2008, -1/+24I was amazed to see a big dude with an 'MPAA - Say No to Piracy' shirt on standing in the front of the theatre when we watched it. He came in and out a couple times and I felt like the Gestapo was keeping an eye on me :( I wonder if he'd freak out if I held a cell phone up pointed towards the screen?
- theghoul, on 07/20/2008, -2/+25His ass is grass now.
The MPAA is going to request the death penalty for that.
Granted, I aggree with some of the above posters, I too hate theaters; kids crying , noisy people, but I will either endure that or wait for the DVD release before watching a cam. - cl2yp71c, on 07/20/2008, -2/+22One more ad I see for that site, and I will notify the ***** cops.
Then you'll certainly need a new job. - nubnub, on 07/20/2008, -0/+20Screeners
- gcnaddict, on 07/20/2008, -4/+22"when the really good rips come from theater employees."
Telecine rips haven't been done in a while. Also, most theater employees don't have that kind of access.
You're thinking of DVD Screeners, which are sent to film critics. - LeviTheSmith, on 07/20/2008, -0/+18"Man views 'The Dark Knight', enjoys"
- solesoul, on 07/20/2008, -2/+20OK, the movie was 2 and 1/2 hours long, quote another line!
- arjie, on 07/20/2008, -1/+17Dude, okay, I mean they can't stop you and stuff, but you're the one who's missing out. Even without bothering about the legality, there's no way its as fun to watch the movie on your computer or TV as it is on the big screen.
Unless you have a big TV, in which case you can afford to watch the movie after all. - yourmartdotnet, on 07/20/2008, -1/+17Depeneds on theater, and the management.
- inactive, on 07/20/2008, -1/+163. ???
4. PROFIT!
Seriously, though, around here you can buy crack and pirated DVDs from the same corner dealer. - briLo, on 07/20/2008, -10/+25"A few hours later the police went to the man’s house and conducted a search where they say they found pirate movies on DVD."
So what if the guy gets excited with Pirate movies, some folks like comedy, some horror films, some pron, but is it right to throw a guy in the clink over a pirate fetish?? - Klisk, on 07/20/2008, -5/+20No, I'll pay 18 dollars for the DVD.
I won't pay 18 for the movie theater, though.
If they did simutaneous DVD release I'd be all for it -- I wouldn't even download the DVD, too much work. I'd buy it. It's not about the money. It's about being able to enjoy it.
Cams, to me, are to tide yourself over for the DVD release... Because, yes, my 300+ DVD collection proves that I legally buy DVD's long after I had downloaded the cam so I could avoid the cesspool known as a Lowes theater.
So no, I'm not sitting in a theater. But yes, I'll buy the DVD. No, I won't wait to buy the DVD when I can download the cam now. But, yes, I'll buy the DVD ~and~ download the cam. - Temo1, on 07/20/2008, -2/+16Lemming, while I neither disagree or agree with you on this topic, using "go find out the facts" is not generally a good way to convince people you're right.
- Jasonstech, on 07/20/2008, -3/+16What is relevant is that his house was searched by police because of it. This should be relevant to every American.
