- Robogeek, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Well, personally, I'm officially sick of all the Disney/Pixar stories that are missing the point. Which is why I submitted this one. ;-) This is significant stuff.
- cambrown99, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'm actually expecting a return to hand-drawn animation under Lasseter to go along with Pixar's computer animation--imagine two major Disney releases a year! And hopefully an end to direct to video crap sequels like Bambi 2: Electric Boogaloo.
- endian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2free content for the iTunes video store!
- yournamehere, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2my dream of a pixar porn is over
- carguy84, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Umm, why else would they have bought Pixar....
- Lacrossedragon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Disney Imagineering doesnt run the theme parks, they just design SOME of the rides
Wrong... Imagineers design EVERY thing you see in the park. The ride mechanics and such might be leased out, but when they are, the imagineers have full right to tweak and change. This is great news for the parks. After Disney Sea kicked the hell out of our American rides, and the awful California Adventure I gave up a lot of hope with Disney. An ex-cast member (Jungle Cruise) running the show will be great. - iWorks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1if this leads to a Apple Theme Park... I'm first in line!
- Chompy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well I'm still worried about Pixar, but with John Lasseter in charge of the parks I've at least got hopes for that side of things. Lasseter can do no wrong after his tireless efforts to get Miyazaki's stuff exposure here in the States.
- toekneebullard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well duh. Disney decided about a year ago they would no longer be making hand animated films. So instead of creating their own CG department, why not just buy out the best one? I'm not suprised at all by this. Disney has lost it's ability to make decent family entertainment, and I hope that doesn't taint Pixar's success.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Disney is actually putting the people who are good at what they do in charge of things. It's also a recognition that the days of pen and ink animation are over.
- edto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Im happy to see actual change happening at disney.
- disneymama, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't think we've seen the end of Disney's 2D animation. Lasseter wants to revive that, so that's great. And while the Pixar guys will be overseeing the animation department, they will not be overseeing Imagineering. Lasseter will be a consultant only.
- TimmyK., on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Damn it! I got my degree in Fungineering! What the hell am I gonna do with that?!?
- artman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is what I wanted to have confirmed. Looks as though Disney is restructuring and that's good. With the Pixar deal this just makes what I hope will be an amazing collaboration. I have not been a fan of Disney since Lion King (which they ripped off from Osamu Tezuka) and most of the other releases were carbon copies. So one can only hope...
- tychoSIX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I love it. Disney basically said, "We'll pay you to acquire us."
- diecastbeatdown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I agree with Chompy. John Lasseter has done a great job in getting Miyazaki's animation state side. My daughter already experienced many of his movies through my purchasing the dvd's elsewhere (yesasia.com or other anime stores) but now everyone can enjoy some of the best animation ever.
Looking forward to the theme parks cleaning up their act, hopefully we'll see another underwater adventure!! (why they ever closed that is still a mystery to me, that rocked). - Robotsu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It really depends on how big the Steve factor is playing out among the top level executives. If he gets in with them on an advisory role and convinces them that the current CEO is innefective and change is needed.. who knows. It really depends on things a lot harder to figure out, like the corporate structure and the inner dealings of the company. With Apple Computer, he had a lot more sway considering he already had loyalists at the company even in his time away from Apple at Pixar and NeXT. And at the time that NeXT was bought out, Apple was in very tumultous times.. Hell, just 1 1/2 years prior, before GIl Amelio when Michael Spindler was CEO, they were very sersiously considering buyout offers from IBM and event, at one point, briefly considered Microsoft.
He was able to execute the effective takeover as much because he is an adept businessman as much as it had to do with the fact that he created the company and was in a very unique position, IMO. - Thundercat1971, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Kind of an odd business deal if you think about it. Disney paid another company to take them over.
- SilentSpyder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This should be good for Disney. Their animation has been suffering. Though I would like to see a return to 2-D animation but that probably won't happen until we get a few more 3-D boxoffice failures.
- nashpreds99, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0When you wish upon Steve Jobs, .......
write the next line! - muikano, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0When do ppl say digg users are less juvenile? You're crazy. Digg users, by and far, have the worst comments on average. Lots of one liners and commenting for commenting sake. Offering nothing. Not a thought. Slashdot has a very great commenting system, and generally, a more intelligent user base.
Bill Gates must be furious. "Dammit, i thought I beat Steve Jobs already!" - chatwithaninja, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Disney lost their creativeness when Walt died.
The one problem with the current Disney productions is the lack of adult content, and the pandering to kiddie trends. More specifically, the current Disney children movies are totally dumbed down.
Look at the two main productions of 2003. Both were based on semi-popular rides in the Magic Kingdom: Pirates of the Caribbean, and The Haunted Mansion. One was dumbed down, and the other was smart, edgy, and mature. My 4 year old daughter loves Pirates, and is bored stiff with Haunted Mansion. 4 years old!
The same thing happened when Henson died, the muppets went from family entertainment, to 3 year old entertainment. Smart, to dumbed down.
Disney has been dumbed down, and they are suffering
Pixar is smart, and they are prospering.
The best kids entertainment, entertains the parents as well. Kids are not as stupid as alot of grown-ups tend to think. - bmw@, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"profit seekers are evil. money is evil." -- cheebsmoker44
Did you hand-build your computer from home-made ICs, and post that msg on a browser you wrote? Clever bunny! What else ya smokin' besides cheeb?
(And people say that Digg users are less juvenile than /. users. Heh.) - Trjn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I was avoiding most of the Disney/Pixar articles until this one.
Got to say, this is probably the best possible outcome, so I'm satisfied. - trevorg75, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Pixar believes in using computer animation solely for story enhancement, not as a cheap way to crank out uninspired sequals with as few a headcount as possible which is where Disney animation was going. I don't think it's the death of 2D, maybe in the way we know it but it's certainly not going to be ALL CG. On the other side of the coin, John Lasseter heading up Imagineering should be pretty damned interesting. I think we've seen the end of cardboard cutout rides.
- darkfire, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1If yo watched the video on the page. Steve said "He hopes that Pixar can spread its ways to other sectors of Disney" Sounds like a taker over to me.
EXTRA EXTRA
DISNEY CHANGES NAME TO PIXAR. APPLE COMPUTERS TO DRIVE ALL AMUSEMENT PARK RIDES - fenixconnektion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0dognose:
"how much does this make Steve worth?"
this effectively makes steve jobs worth about 6.7 billion, considering he was worth 3.1 before the disney acquisition and his pixar shares were around 3.6 billion. - vtcarl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0why do i see this in the "deals" section? jesus people, "deals" doesn't mean "merger deals". ugh.
- faxxy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"""It's also a recognition that the days of pen and ink animation are over"""
It will always have a place. Photoshop didn't displace paintings with real brushes. - skellener, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Absolutely Robogeek!

Cheers - xodex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Exactly, WED/Disney Imagineering doesn't run the theme parks, they concept ideas that fit themselves to actual products for the stage that is the theme parks.
- johnkimble, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0does this mean that we'll be going to, dare i say it, PIXY-LAND?
- test5477, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Pixar is its own company, I think people are giving Steve too much power here. He is great with Apple and he is great with Pixar but I think the key is Lassiter, he is the animation genius from what I have read and he will do great with all the Disney oppertunities. Steve Jobs will obviously be very influential with new outlets for the Disney. BTW Disney is a very large company and don't think that buying PIXAR is going to drastically xhange everything about Disney.
Look for yourself at what the Company owns:
http://www.cjr.org/tools/owners/disney.asp - macewan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0*wondering when apple logo will start creeping into shows on cbs & whatnot*
- Ewookie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0*Selects Pixar* "/mourn"
- ek3s, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Does this mean I can slap Jobs for releasing Lion King 4?
- cheebsmoker44, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0sounds great, but these guys only did this for profit. no one is concerned with the human aspect of this. profit seekers are evil. money is evil.
- SpeedyG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Just like I thought, it's basically Disney groveling to Pixar to save them from themselves.
It's now a question of if the perception of Disney as the 800 lb. gorilla will change. Not likely. - Chasin_Fat_Kids, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is great, I'm a huge Disney fan and I've always thought Pixar holds the soul of what Disney once had with their animation. Hopefully this will end the crap sequels and direct to video movies that Disney brings out that ultimately weakens them as a company.
My niece had a princesses DVD, she wanted me to watch it with her. All it was was chopped up pieces of their classic movies, sometimes even still frames with text underneath. Some of it was the crappy Aladdin TV show. I was mortified how could Disney abuse their franchise like that? - MikeCampo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0R.I.P Disney.
- TimmyK., on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No, but it will drastically change Disney Animation. And Steve Jobs is (or rather was) the CEO of Pixar. He wasn't as hands on with them as he is with Apple, but he was very influencial. You are definitely right about Lassiter being the heart and soul of Pixar, but that is in a creative sense. But no Jobs won't have a drastic effect on all of Disney, but he will have an effect, and I think they are going to welcome his input. He has shown that he is willing to take chances, but also that his chances often seem to pay off bigtime. This whole thing is a huge shot in the arm that Disney has needed for MANY years.
- Cerberus047, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0slowly but shurley disney world will have apple ads and an apple store and all the employees will have ipods....
- makomako, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm happy to see that Pixar might be making some positive changes in Disney. But I am wary, I was actually really happy to see Disney and Pixar split after their contract, cause maybe Pixar could go in a different direction (although obviously, never was likely). I hope to see more classic story telling (not as in classic stories, but good storytelling). I think Disney became a family thing over the years and has to conform to that, putting in lessons about self esteem and not-really-related cultural stuff that has nothing to do with the story and doesn't help it along at all (Brother Bear and Chicken Little). I think Disney forgot that they're telling stories, not doing public service announcements about diversity. Finding Nemo had this a little, but Pixar is still wonderful with story and just showing happiness and love, something we can all relate to. Hopefully this will seep back into Disney and maybe make them some better movies.
- eeaarrgh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I would love to see Lasseter recruit some top-notch people from anime for 2-D work; give them a checkbook and turn them loose. Miyazaki and Takahata probably won't budge since they've created such a wonderful environment for themselves... Oshii always seems up for a little travel, though.
Heh. Imagine an Oshii film coming out under the Disney brand. - hmmburger, on 03/03/2008, -0/+0If you wanna get tickets to see disney stuff check these two awesome sites:
http://adventuretix.info and http://dayouttix.info - ek3s, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Can I have my Space Mountian themed iPod now?
- MisterKen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have it on good authority that the folks at Pixar are happy about this 'purchase'.
Many of them are ex-Disney people who were layed off when Disney closed their Olando and other animation studios. Those wonderfully creative and bitter people will now be in charge of Disney animation.
Bring them a tasteful basket for all the heads that are going to roll!

We saw the Bambi 2 billboard the other day and said EXACTLY those words. Hilarious. - sultan3452, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0My daughter loves the films Disney has made with Pixar - glad to hear that they'll keep them coming!
