- maiku00, on 10/12/2007, -9/+25Why?
Flickr has much more options, customization, services and features... just because this is Google does not mean that its automatically better...
I was hoping for a flickr killer, It would always be nice to have something better. But from what I have seen, this is pretty mediocre stuff. I fail to see how it could possibly replace Flickr for people who are actually serious about their online photo collections. - muyuu, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16Way to get digged up for nothing. Care to elaborate why is flickr superior?
- Anekdoten, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14No wonder Google stock can't stay low, these guys are not sleeping.
- maiku00, on 10/12/2007, -22/+32I think Flickr is still superior...

test :) - Mike89, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Hey, wow.. The top cornor doesnt say BETA - it says Test.. Hmm!
- Poco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9No doubt it will increase soon enough.
- Mudcrutch, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9or even better -- if you could use some of your gmail space for this instead of having seperate tallies for each service.
- benthere, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8What's cool about Picasa is you can upload pics right from the program.
Has anyone tried Hello?
http://www.hello.com/
It's an IM app by Google that is the best for photo messaging and photoblogging that I've seen. It also integrates with Picasa and I assume it will work with this as well. - Nowheredan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10I wish they'd made it a gig of space for free, like Gmail when it launched. That would have killed Flickr dead.
- cam2009, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9" Upgrade Storage
More photos means more sharing!
$25 gets you around 25,000 photos for one year.
You are currently using 26 MB (11%) of your free 250 MB.
Now for only $25 per year, you can add around 25,000 wallpaper-sized photos to your Picasa Web Albums account.
You'll enjoy:
* 6GB extra storage space in your Picasa Web Albums account.
* 12 months of hassle-free uploading and sharing
No complicated monthly bandwidth limits to keep track of.
Each year, we'll automatically renew your account. But don't worry, we'll always contact you with the option of cancelling before charging your credit card.
You can always use your free Picasa Web Albums account without upgrading."
Hoped it was all free...flickr has 200 photo limit without upgrade, google has 250 mb upload without upgrade...kind of a tossup - azoneli, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9This isn't placed against Flickr, it's against Yahoo Photos which is rolling out a new version this summer. Google released Picasa Web Albums so they could beat Yahoo to it. This is for the average person that wants to save some pictures.
- weareglass, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9This isn't the first new free photo storage option, is it? Aren't Photobucket and Yahoo's standard photos program free? And, actually it's not free, it's $25 a year (same as Flickr) if you want to store more than a certain amount (which they estimate 1k photos, so...yeah most people won't need it)
- Shibmaster75, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I Don't mean to sound rude, but "Social, Non-Sexual People, the non-geeks"....Dude..Dude...Dude, Not cool, there's a ton of us diggers that consider ourselves, Social, (Sexual...Dear God...Sexual) and Huge Geeks...So Down with your description of Geeks.....
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9This is very awsome, i might actually use it lol
test -> http://picasaweb.google.com/Siriuskr/Buddy - boredzo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Only supports JPEG? Uh? It should at least support TIFF and PNG (for screenshots) as well.
Maybe RAW, too, but I'm not sure how well that would work in 250 MB of space.
EDIT: Actually, you can get 6 GB for a $25 yearly subscription. So both TIFF and RAW could work if Google allowed for them. http://picasa.google.com/web/user_faq.html - Unr3a1, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Shouldn't it be Picasa Web Album beta? Why is google now using 'test'?
- redlaser, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7yeah got in too. looks neat.
the only problem.
Public Gallery URL is picasaweb.google.com/ xxgoogleIDxx
its possible to add another GoogleID, but ul have to create a new one. They should have taken the flickr way and seperated the picasa and google IDs
..and the new picasa's sweeeet. its got geotagging, color search, ftp etc etc,, mmmmwah - coheedcollapse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Yeah, Hello is pretty damn cool, before I got my own domain, I ran my blogspot totally with Hello and I never had to touch my browser to update it. It's really nifty.
- nrbelex, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Picasa has become one of my most used programs and this sure as hell won't hurt it. When I think about the number of Google services I use (Gmail, Pages, Picasa, there must be more...) I've probably used a full gigabyte of server space free and without breaking any rules (i.e. multiple accounts). Google continues to impress me and all those complaints of it having jumped the shark really don't hold up under scrutiny.
Edit: Also, what took up 148 mb on my hd only takes up 21 mb on Google's server and the image quality is pretty damn high so it should be tough to go through all 250 megs. - Alegis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I prefer a limit in MBs rather than amount of pictures. Nice thing, trying this out. I'm not really too keen on MSN Space ^^
- allthewhile, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6You can upload to google video from picasa now. It's under "tools, experimental". I'm uploading a vid now.
- AhmedB, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7250 MB only???? this is VERY VERY small especially if you want to share high res images, I'm thinking flickr provides a better capacity alternative at this point...why can I just use the space that's available in my gmail account?!
- batmant, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10TEST is totally the new BETA
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9Because I don't wonna pay extra to upload my all my photos in original resolution. I just want a good free service to dump all the pictures I take, I don't care for the interface.
- jeremythomas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I think that after google sees potential revenue from advertising on picasaweb, we will get more storage space...
google drive, anyone? - szembek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Your comparison is no good. You say 20mb/month = 240mb/year. Yeah sure, but what happens when you want to upload 100mb? You have to do it over a five month stretch. With Google you can upload, delete, upload, etc... all you want within the 250mb.
- donsherio, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5umm... the controls in slide show dissapear if u dont move the mouse, and it goes by itself if u let it.... :P
- ntrsfrml, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7and Yes, PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD.. RELEASE MAC UB PICASA edition!!!!
Thank you Google/Picasa team!!1 - jmyhasuk, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Picasa a killer web app? Yahoo lost again? Please people, get off the Google bandwagon. Granted, Google has some great services, but Picasa is not one of them. The interface is god awful, it has very few features, and blows compared to other online photo services. Basically, it's Google meets Photobucket. Flickr has notes, tags, groups, group pools, moblogging...the feature list goes on and on.
For those obsessed over storage limits:
Flickr Free Account
20 MB monthly upload limit = 240 MB upload limit per year
Flickr Pro Account:
2GB monthly upload limit = 24GB upload limit per year
Unlimited storage and bandwidth
Picasa Free Account:
250 MB storage limit per year
Picasa Paid Account:
6 GB storage limit per year
I'd give up the 10 extra MB you get with Picasa free account for the feature set you get with a Flickr free account. No matter what way you look at it storage wise/feature wise, you get a lot more out of a Flickr Pro account than you would a Google Picasa account. Flickr is leaps and bounds ahead of Picasa; I can't understand why anyone would chose otherwise. - nrbelex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Why would those "serious" people even be using Picasa...?
Also, the uploaded photo's EXIF tags are still attached, just not displayed. - sophiaperennis, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7I love using Picasa. Would be nice if they could write it for the Mac as well.
- donsherio, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9woah, the new picasa has new stuff in it? Woah cant wait to install.
oh and google, GET PICASA FOR MAC! PLEAAAAAAAAASE my yearbook staff needs it! iPhoto SUCKS! (1 hour to import what picasa could import in 1 minute - kingfelix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3the simple fact that the interface is cleaner and faster and that you can directly right-click to save images immediately push this past flickr, at least from a user perspective.
- shiftt, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5everything works okay for me
keep in mind this is FIRST COME FIRST SERVE so register now because after the digg effect they'll probably have enough people - GreenPlastik, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Seriously. iPhoto is OK and all, but Picasa was one of my bread and butter apps in Windows. Now I got my MBP, and I really don't feel like Boot Camping into XP to deal with my pictures, so I use iPhoto. Put Picasa on the Mac and me love you long time.
- daypah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I love how people are so quick to rip on this service and compare it to Flickr. I have had a Flickr account for about 6 months and I love the service. This Google service has been online for about 6 HOURS. Give it some time before you knock it.
- stou, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8It seems like google has changed from saying 'BETA' to "test" to prevent people from saying "all of their ***** is in beta"
- duruq, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I just noticed someting. It is probably nothing but it looked interesting to me. Both the newly relesaed Google Earth and Picasa have the option to make Google the default search engine in Internet Explorer in their installers. And it is checked by default (yeah, what would you expect anyway)
The thing is now the Vista and IE7 is coming up and it has built in search which is set to MSN by default. Maybe, and I know this is far fetched, Google is trying to penetrate into people's computers using stuff like this and make its search engine, core business, more prevalent. It is a very very interesting tactic if you consider how people rush to download Google stuff whenever something comes up and how people (I mean the social, sexual people; the non geeks) keep on clicking next until they are done with the installer.
I personally do not care. I use Google for search anyway. - hchaudh1, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6I just used it. It was fast and real easy to upload and view. This is another desktop client Google got right. Now I just wish they would do something similar for their video viewer and upload software. Frankly, I find this better than flikr.
- azoneli, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Finally!!! I won't have to save my pictures on my Gmail account. This is great, when it comes to storage I'm sure that if Flickr raises their max storage allowed for a free account, Google will do the same (like they did when Yahoo raised the max storage capacity of Yahoo Mail). This is a win-win for all!
- Salvo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I was quite happy with my trusty iBook up until I discovered Picasa.
Until Google port Picasa to Mac, anyone know how to write an iPhoto Plugin for Picasa WebAlbums? - jonathanex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I have the feeling it'll go up to the classic 1 google gig after the initial mass signup and upload dies down.
- kolbasa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yeah, and Sergey Brin tested it with the photos from his vacation: http://picasaweb.google.com/sergey.brin/
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4putting those new server farms to use
- dextroz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3They need to make this so that the pictures in the web album can 'sync' up their meta-data and folder contents with the Picasa application. That would rock! Even images in e-mail in Gmail should automatically appear in a folder in the Web Picasa and then get downloaded in Picasa Application. As long as I change/tag them in once place they get updated everywhere, but the e-mail account.
- jamiequint, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6148MB => 21MB is a compression ratio of approximately 8:1 and that is being generous. Considering this I would need 250*8 Megabytes (About 2GB) of pictures to fill up my space. According to you this "should be tough" to go through.....checking size of photo folder....13.46GB, and hey, I wouldn't even consider myself a hobbyist. According to Google I thankfully will not have to keep track of any "complicated bandwith limits" so even if I pay a yearly fee, then instead of being able to upload all my photos over time (as i could have easily done at the rate of 2GB a month with flickr) I now have to start deleting things once I get to 6GB. great....
Bottom line is...
Flickr: 1
Google: 0 - acarneiro, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Looks OK. But as some people remarked, I still think Flickr is far superior.
- hobo05, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's TEST...or in other words beta, why does everyone expect a full fledged service and product all the time especially when they said TEST smack right next to the logo. By the way, by NOT trying you won't be encouraging them to make it better. By telling ppl not to try it is unfair as well, why are you so biased that you won't give anyone a chance to compete? Chances are that if picasa and google are serious about competition, they will improve, but they won't see a point if no one tries and likes their initial test release. I'm not forcing or telling you to try it, but please don't stop other ppl from doing so. If google becomes competition, you know for sure flickr (not to mention yahoo) is going to up their services as well. This will be better for everyone, even flikr lovers like yourself
- flickerbrain, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5This looks like it will be another great product in Googles arsenal of services. Even just messing with it for a few minutes, I'd say it's quite a bit nicer than the current yahoo photos service. They do a pretty good job of recreating the Picasa experience on the web, in a leaner form. I plan on using this for a lot of photos I'll be taking out on the highways of Alaska.
