- AmyVernon, on 12/01/2008, -1/+15I think that's true. When someone's in the car with you, you're more conscious of looking away from the road to talk to them. And they can also scream to tell you to look at the road.
But if you're on the phone and it's a drive you do all the time, you can almost zone out and forget you're driving, reach back into the back seat for something. - bastienlabelle, on 12/03/2008, -2/+15Did we really need a study to know that...?
- d2002, on 12/02/2008, -1/+14I can't talk and drive at the same time. It distracts me from the digging.
- TGB2, on 12/03/2008, -2/+8didn't we know this a long time ago
- datagod, on 12/03/2008, -0/+5From the title, I thought it meant that the driver would be more distracted than the passenger....kinda confusing...
- identityxcrysis, on 12/03/2008, -1/+6...surprise!?
- ninjagames, on 12/02/2008, -0/+4Yeah, I guess that makes sense because you would need your hand off the wheel. Although it depends what kind of passenger you have too ;)
- roijen, on 12/03/2008, -0/+3I would really like to see some stats on how having bluetooth integrated in the vehicle would affect driving. The thumbnail shows this but the article doesn't talk about it.
Would it make the phone conversation less formal, like a real conversation where the driver can take a break for a few seconds because there is no physical device demanding the driver's attention, or does it make a difference? - kakapu4u, on 12/03/2008, -0/+3I think they omitted the whole clarity issue. My brain has to work to turn the garbled noises coming from a tiny ass phone speaker into voice quality sounds. It's not nearly as intelligible as a voice from someone sitting next to me. Then when I miss something, I have to say "wait, what did you say?" and try to divert even more of my attention to the cell. Lets try that in the snow, when I'm taking a corner...
I hate talking on the phone. Somebody invent true voice clarity already - including lower frequencies that phone speakers just can't produce. - LR2_, on 12/03/2008, -0/+2Yeah, if you are talking to someone who is in the car with you they know when to shut up. Obviously, this is not the case when talking to someone on the phone.
- chetchez, on 12/03/2008, -0/+2What?
- scheibs14, on 12/03/2008, -0/+2All we need now is a hologram projected onto the passenger seat of the person you are talking to. Problem solved
- cassaffousth, on 12/03/2008, -0/+1It was known than talking on the cell phone was dangerous, but there was some dispute about why talking with a passenger is not as dangerous. This study was intended to demonstrate that cell phone talking is different (and more dangerous) than talking to a passenger.
- EtherGnat, on 12/03/2008, -0/+1I don't know about making it more informal, but previous test data I've seen didn't show a significant difference in the accident rate between those who use hands free devices and those who didn't.
- Garmonbozzia, on 12/03/2008, -0/+1I think this is crap. I can set a phone down. My nagging wife or my hellraising kids (or both!) are in that car to stay!
- EtherGnat, on 12/03/2008, -0/+1My gut feeling would have been that hands free devices would be significantly safer than holding the phone to your ear, and talking with somebody would have the risk whether the person was in the car or you were talking on a hands free device. Neither is true.
Furthermore understanding not only the what but the why helps design better ways of doing things for the future. - DrywallThief, on 12/03/2008, -1/+2I never talk while I'm driving. It distracts my reading too much.
http://tinyurl.com/5d3afp - xB4R7x, on 12/03/2008, -0/+1what the... why?
- xB4R7x, on 12/03/2008, -0/+1What is with people and posting random ass links these days?

- Cglass, on 12/03/2008, -1/+1:D I've played CS while driving on the freeway before.
Good thing it was hands free =) wouldn't want to cause an accident. - juliereader, on 02/10/2009, -0/+0well that is so obvious, when talking to passenger you still got your hands on steering, but when talking on mobile, your hands can be anywhere :P

- induren, on 12/03/2008, -2/+2Yes, we did. At least at 2002 we knew it, when my professor explicitly stated that research shows this is the exact reason why cell phones are dangerous to drive with.
- Avaseal, on 12/03/2008, -3/+3Study: dog ***** tastes worst than papa gino's pizza
- cassaffousth, on 12/03/2008, -1/+1Yes. Did you have any scientific evidence to prove that before this study?
Your intuition told you that, but to many people tell them the contrary. Scientific evidence will only be refuted by scientific evidence. - utinam, on 12/03/2008, -0/+0Because the title should have read, "Phone conversations distract drivers more than they do passengers," or been rephrased entirely, as in, "Drivers are distracted more by phone conversations than by conversing with passengers."
- MrMischief20, on 12/03/2008, -2/+2No *****.
- Tenoq, on 12/03/2008, -2/+1Yes... this is an old, old study that's just been re-hashed. Yay for wasted research money. :p
- Amberdextrous, on 12/03/2008, -1/+0I think this can be filed in No ***** category
