- kevin_ou, on 10/10/2007, -0/+62434 users affected; had nothing to do with Google's acquisition.
- TimmyGUNZ, on 10/10/2007, -0/+41This sucks for those affected, but if you're going to use a "beta" product or a web 2.0 startup as your primary phone number, you have to expect this kind of thing to happen.
- smellinator, on 10/10/2007, -2/+43If you signed up for a phone number for life, and you were notified that you have 8 days left on the number, I think you should QUICKLY go buy some life insurance, and pick up a Bible, Qur'an, Torah, and some other related light reading! Google has a LOT of power.
- GliTCH82, on 10/10/2007, -0/+27Google even offered to pay for the lady to get new business cards printed! That is really awesome.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+15The service IS in beta, I would expect stuff like this to happen.
I think sometimes digg users take small inconveniences and turn them into massive corporate anti-consumer evil conspiracies. Not to say there aren't any massive anti-consumer evil corporations out there, but I don't think google is one of them. - surfing, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10Help me Tom Cruise!

Ya bad joke. But donate blood, it's a good thing. - brutalentropy, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7I have 7 invites left if anyone wants one. Send an email to thedank at gmail .com with your name and email address and I will hook you up.
- glitch47, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5it only affected 434 users. relax.
- TimmyGUNZ, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Well the article says this would've happened regardless if Google stepped in or not.
- thebman990, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5I smell a plot for a cheezy horror film.
- stalefries, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Here's my tip for any who wants invites for these kinds of services.
Go to http://blogsearch.google.com , and search for " invites". Change the results so that they're ordered by time. You'll find a few blogs offering invites to the first few people to comment. Comment on those posts, wait a couple of days, and you should have at least 1 invite! Pass on the extras to your friends. - brutalentropy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Alright... all my invites are gone.
sorry guys - huskerdude, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3RTFA
- aydoubleyou, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5I didnt receive any notification of my number being canceled. I sure hope things stay that way, it's a great service!
- yeahbuddy, on 10/10/2007, -3/+6FUD!! EVERYONE RUN!! TEH NUMBAR IS GONE!!
- Ansible, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Phone number for life: dial TAGCGGAATATCCCGCGACCGAATA etc etc
- brutalentropy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2No problem... enjoy!
- rodon, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I didn't receive any notice either. My number probably will remain the same. Though, even if mine did change it wouldn't have been the end of the world. Grand Central is an incredibly useful service, and as long as it is free, I cannot complain. Like many people my age these days, I don't have a land line. I do have a cell phone, and my own skype in number however. It is fantastic to be able to have this kind of control over how people can contact me.
- setec, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Yes, Microsoft is evil but Google could never be evil, Wake up!! Google has been doing things for the past few years now that everyone complained Microsoft did. But the blind G-Sheep follow.
- toddhenkel, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3What happened to Local Number Portability? Sounds like Grand Central didn't really "own" the numbers of their customer's behalf and have no right to port them to another, better carrier...
- jericho, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1No, they don't support text messaging yet. They actually say "yet" on their FAQ, which would seem to indicate that it's a future plan. That's the only thing keeping me from giving out my GC number. I get too many text messages to use it right now.
- stalefries, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Edit timer ran out: This has worked for me for Joost and GrandCentral, haven't tried it for anything else.
- optize, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Does it forward text messages that get sent to that number too?
- BVisin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0email sent. Thank you.
- kenvsryu, on 10/10/2007, -2/+28675309
- ShannaraFan, on 10/10/2007, -3/+2But, but, this is so lame and stupid! Waaaa!
- bitterg, on 10/10/2007, -8/+4I agree with you, but you wouldn't expect for this to happen just because Google stepped in. Maybe I should say that since Google bought them, this should not be happening!
- motheroats, on 10/10/2007, -5/+1what will good buy next?
- hajurba, on 10/10/2007, -5/+0it's a great service!
http://lallunepal.com - scribebox, on 10/10/2007, -8/+1anyone got an invite?
scribebox@gmail.com - molecool, on 10/10/2007, -10/+2Damn, have been a user for several months now - was just about to print new business cards with my number. What a joke! What good is a 'central number' if the provider decides to change it at their very whim? I think this is a huge mistake and believe that they're going to lose a lot of customers. For what it's worth - I do love Google, but I do feel very uncomfortable with them amassing too much much intel on my browsing habits for starters and now my phone habits (which is why I'm using an external proxy - also keeps those nosy ISPs off my back). I don't want anyone, not even Google, to become the proverbial Internet portal.
- chrisholland, on 10/10/2007, -21/+1Phone numbers are so uncool. Cool people use SIP addresses for all forms of real-time communications.
