No, it does not. No movies, no tv shows, and most importantly, no apps. It also won't sync contacts, calendar, or photos. It also won't perform upgrades or backups. You can transfer podcasts, but it won't be "seamless".
What it will do, is allow music from your iTunes library, whether ripped, pirated, bought as iTunes Plus, or downloaded elsewhere without DRM, to be transferred to the Palm Pre, just like many, many, other devices have been able to do for a long time now.
And no, this isn't going to be a surprise to Apple. Apple is the one who put the code into iTunes to enable this for multiple devices. Apple created the code, and Apple can take the code out in future releases of iTunes. - Yarkz, on 05/28/2009, -15/+49Itunes is my least favorite part of my ipod though...
- Nydendarin, on 05/28/2009, -16/+42"macslut"... the name says it all.
- RoroCo, on 05/29/2009, -10/+29Did Palm touch you in a bad place when you were young? Gees....
- cmw72, on 05/28/2009, -10/+28Whoah ... somebody woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning ...
- blastcube, on 05/29/2009, -4/+18People who say they don't like iTunes are probably Windows users...
It's just that iTunes is a brilliant program on OS X . I've used it on Windows and I can honestly say it's rather lacklustre. It's weird seeing people knock iTunes because it absolutely rocks on OS X and I haven't had a single problem with it. - inactive, on 05/29/2009, -5/+12It's cool to hate iTunes and mostly everything else Apple here.
- Macintoshreader, on 05/29/2009, -0/+6IF you use Windows. I use Mac OS X, and iTunes works great. It's my primary multimedia software on OS X.
- Kumaku, on 05/29/2009, -5/+11Yeah, blackberrys can do this too.
- Antialias, on 05/29/2009, -1/+6A lot of devices sync music with iTunes. The Pre won't do TV shows, Movies, etc. Only non DRM music. Nice to have the feature but certainly nowhere near the seamless syncing that the iPhone does.
I'm excited to see the reviews of the Pre but I really doubt Apple didn't see it coming and at least counter most of the features if not 1 up them with the iPhone they will announce on the 8th. The coming weeks should be interesting indeed. - COINTELPROAgent, on 05/28/2009, -5/+10And right on cue, two front-pages in a row for blind digger adgrou and his "idiggyouyoudiggme" advertising spammers.
Thanks Twatbook, thanks Digg. - SeveringGecko, on 05/29/2009, -4/+9i dont understand the itunes hate, i love the program and the way it works with my iphone and ipod
back on topic-
it looks in the pictures like the pre shows up as an ipod, apple will probably release an update and it wont work or at least will just show up as a mass storage device - Qumahlin, on 05/29/2009, -1/+5This is digg, so regardless of what perfect sense you are making the response to the name "macslut" will always be idiots, and I promise you there are more of them here to digg you down then people actually willing to accept your opinion and digg you up.
- macslut, on 05/29/2009, -1/+4The funny thing is that the name actually comes from my boat, which is a MacGregor...also known as a Mac. The name of the boat is Sea Slut (because it goes anywhere)...and I didn't come up with the name.
- dsmith5237, on 05/29/2009, -0/+3I'll get a Pre, but I'll keep my iPod Touch.
- COINTELPROAgent, on 05/29/2009, -2/+4Yup. His friend's network of blind- and mass-diggers is more pure than the other spammer's.
- GMirza, on 05/29/2009, -0/+2Love or hate Apple, they need some competition and the Pre does just that with the ability to have multiple apps open at once.

- macslut, on 05/29/2009, -0/+2Here are some of the 3rd party devices that have plugins already bundled with iTunes, there are many others that Apple doesn't provide the plugin, but they have instructions for developing one in their SDK:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2172 - macslut, on 05/29/2009, -4/+6I love the way people are assuming that I'm blasting the Palm here. My issue isn't with the Palm Pre at all. I haven't used it, and will take a trip to the store to try it out when it's available. Already there are some very ***** cool aspects of the device that have me very intrigued.
My problem is with absolutely ***** piss poor reporting from Forbes and CNET on this story, and the subsequent followup copy & pasting from sites like PC World that can't be bothered with the relevant details.
The Palm Pre syncs iTunes Plus music files? How is this even news? Of course it would be able to...how could it not?
What would be interesting and newsworthy is if, as the title and even the full article implies, the Palm Pre does something with iTunes other than what many other devices already do, and have done for years.
It's one thing if the title was misleading, or if skimming through the article was misleading, but the reading any of the articles I've seen today that copy and pasted from Forbes/CNET will imply that if there are things you like about the iTunes store, the Palm Pre has you covered, when in fact it doesn't other than for iTunes plus music files.
Piss poor reporting that should've been easy to get right. Apple even has a knowledge database entry for some of the 3rd party devices that work with iTunes as well as info in the SDK on how to make your device work with iTunes (for just the non-DRM stuff). - sikedsyko, on 05/29/2009, -0/+2what are these magical other devices that can sync with itunes? I've been looking to switch from my ipod for a while
- JCEEZ, on 05/29/2009, -1/+3I had an old ass ipod (2nd gen) and a nano that was like 4 years old (only 2 gb). I recently got the 120 gb ipod classic, and with it, had to update my itunes on my new laptop... it runs slower then molasses. Are there itunes alternatives out there for the ipod?
- supermanred, on 05/29/2009, -1/+2On OS X it rocks. Works great throughout the house. I have an airport addon in the kitchen with speakers attached to it and can play any song in my library by using my iPhone as a remote. iTunes works great in OS X and doesnt crash and do all the funky ***** it does in Windows. Quicktime also kicks ass in OS X and sucks big balls in Windows...sometimes I think the people in Redmond do this on purpose to spread anti-Apple opinion... Every time I used to have a major windows update my iTunes and Quicktime would get more *****. Since Ive switched to OS X I see how great Quicktime and iTunes really are.
- Macintoshreader, on 05/29/2009, -1/+2iTunes cannot work without properly without QuickTime, idiot. So they do have a reason for including it. If it weren't for QuickTime, Cover Flow and videos wouldn't work because they use technologies from it; videos sold on iTunes and playable on iPods need to use either H.264 encoding or MPEG-4.
- nullvector, on 05/29/2009, -0/+1Yeah...saw that. Just wasn't too impressed. If you really can only see one app at a time, does multitasking really matter?
I'm not saying the iPhone is the end-all of technology with phones....but I think the pre will appeal more towards business people, and not pick up that huge market share that the iPhone has.
Everyone knows what an iPhone is. Everyone won't know what a pre is. - zwaldowski, on 05/29/2009, -0/+1Actually, they kinda are, despite the fact that I dislike both. Microsoft doesn't *force* you to install it... it's already there.
- supermanred, on 05/29/2009, -0/+1I use it because it allows me to play the media in the itunes library on my usb drives (attached upstairs to my wireless router) from any computer in the house or the laptop. It also allows me to use my iPhone as a remote control for that music and lets me play it on any room or through the speakers I have in my kitchen.
Seriously, it just works great. The only feature I'd love for them to add is the ability to stream my music online to my phone so I dont have to carry the actual files with me. - Sfenton, on 05/29/2009, -7/+8Guess what percentage of PC's run on Windows?
90%
Windows 7 user here. I installed it just so I could update my Ipod and then just uninstalled it. Its a resource hog and just slow in general.
Going to be picking up a ZuneHD when it comes out so I can be completly done with Apple. - pikelet, on 05/29/2009, -0/+187.9% http://marketshare.hitslink.com/operating-system-m ...
- jp22382, on 05/29/2009, -2/+3So if i'm someone that currently relies on iTunes to do everything for me automatically, how is this not a selling point?
- blastcube, on 05/29/2009, -3/+4Whilst Quicktime doesn't have the best UI in the world. It's actually a decent movie player. Sometimes iI use VLC sometimes I use Quicktime, especially if it's some obscure .MKV or if its a .MOV which Quicktime sometimes plays decodes better than VLC.
- EllimistX, on 05/29/2009, -4/+5It is for Mac people switching from an iPhone. I know iTunes is ***** on Windows, but it's just fine on OS X.
- JCEEZ, on 05/29/2009, -2/+3lol
- macslut, on 05/29/2009, -0/+1Of course the obvious difference here is that the iPods that are audio only are still going to be fully functioning within the sync capability of iTunes, and that they can sync DRM music as well.
My issue isn't with the Palm Pre here, it's with the piss poor reporting and the likely confusion it will cause. Nobody is going to think that the iPod Shuffle is going to magically grow a screen and play movies from iTunes, but many of the sites reporting on the Palm Pre "seamless syncing with iTunes" are implying that it's fully compatible with iTunes, while ignoring the fact that it's mostly not compatible with iTunes, and more so that it's not any more compatible than many other 3rd party products.
These reporters and bloggers are trying to make a story where there is none, and are trying to create "battle hype" between the Pre and iPhone. The reason why this really is a non-story is that Apple has always allowed, and even bundled many, 3rd party device plugins for iTunes. It's part of their SDK.
It would've been a much more interesting story if for some weird reason Palm made the Pre in such a way that it could *not* sync non-DRM music with iTunes. - jp22382, on 05/29/2009, -1/+2Then they don't use it. Drag and drop. Nothing forcing you to use iTunes.
http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009 ... - Psygnosis, on 05/29/2009, -0/+1"No, it does not. No movies, no tv shows, and most importantly, no apps. It also won't sync contacts, calendar, or photos."
Damn, then I guess all those old iPod minis, classics, and nanos, can't "seamlessly" sync with iTunes either! - UnbannedAccount, on 05/29/2009, -0/+1You forgot it is slow as ***** and has many useless services running that you don't need.
- nullvector, on 05/29/2009, -1/+2What is this fascination with the Pre? I swear, some sites are getting kickbacks or something for talking about it so much.
Making it sync with iTunes is like saying "if you buy a car from our dealership, we'll include a free sack of manure!"
The iPhone is successful because of its apps, and the developer support behind it. Also, it's "cool" to have an iPhone. I don't know if it will be so cool to say "I have a pre!" - amdinator, on 06/01/2009, -0/+1I don't see the appeal of this whole "syncing" thing. Can't we just use direct file transfer with something like beyond compare?
Edit: I see that you can indeed do drag n' drop. Thank god, iTunes is a virus and I don't ever want it on any of my machines. - Caleb83, on 05/29/2009, -1/+2"iPhone killer -- an overused term that never comes true."
The author had a neutral tone until that comment which revealed himself to be an Apple fanboy. Don't get me wrong, the iPhone is a great device, but to say that? That's about as naive as you can get. You can argue he's only referring to previous uses of the term, but he could have said "an overused term that has yet to come true" without showing his true colors. Funny that Brennon writes for PCworld. - peznex, on 05/29/2009, -0/+1Exactly. My 900Mhz iBook opens iTunes faster than my 2.0Ghz Core 2 Duo desktop.
- pikelet, on 05/29/2009, -0/+1Of course multitasking matters even if you can only see one app..
Checking messages, start to compose a reply - want to check a fact on the web, open a browser but oh no, don't like the song that just shuffled so switch to media player to change it, then back to the browser which is still open right where you need it, then back to messages where you can copy & paste the info right into your still open message. No reopening apps and having to get back to where you were. I love my smartphone.
Oh, and that collective 'everyone' usually just goes to the phone store and picks a random appealing shiny. Name recognition is less important than you think. - pentiumii, on 05/29/2009, -0/+1u can do that now with out itunes
i got streaming set box i built my self coast 250 buck and a NAS that i built my self 200 bucks i store all my media on my NAS and can stream any media i want to any computer in my house or if i am out in about i have my NAS set up like a server i can connect to and get any file i want off it
i usually make copy of all my movies then just stream them to my tv or i go through my music with my tv via my streaming box
i just set my mom up with a streaming box and the other day i bought a dvd she want to barrow
and instead of her coming to get i just ripped it and put it on my NAS and she streamed right to her tv via her new streaming box i bult her granted this was only avi not a full dvd vob format or anything but still worked great she was happy
the thing have been out their for a wile people linux guys had this stuff for years why any one spend all that money on apple tv and sling player boxes r beyond me u can do all that ***** for free u know minus the hardware but with out restriction - MonoDede, on 05/29/2009, -0/+1Same here.
- devophl, on 05/29/2009, -1/+1The iPod and iPhone are Apple products... and those who have them love them... and everyone else wants them. When you walk into most electronic stores and see whole sections dedicated to iPod accessories, you realize just how much of a monopoly Apple has in the music player business. If the iPhone was available on all networks, it would probably have the same market share percentage as the iPod.
The bottom line for the Pre is that not manufactured by Apple and is unlikely to ever gain the user desirability that the iPhone has. If Apple wanted to squash the Pre, they'd offer a CDMA version of the iPhone to Verizon before Palm gets a chance to release the Pre to Verizon (Palm has a 6 month exclusive contract with Sprint). But Apple seems content to stay GSM only and promote itself to the huge GSM market overseas. - UnbannedAccount, on 05/29/2009, -1/+1Who cares, iTunes is a bloated fyck of a program. Using it is a minus, and this comes from someone who loves his iPhone.
- supermanred, on 05/29/2009, -1/+1Ive dropped my iPhone like 40 times and I am SO glad there are very little moving parts in it, also VERY glad there is no damned keyboard on it... just more ***** to break.
- supermanred, on 05/29/2009, -2/+2Guess what percentage of PC's run on Windows?
It's got to be less than 90% now since Apple OS X has 10% of the market and Im sure other UNIX based operating systems like Linux and Ubuntu are gaining ground as well. - sdipaola, on 05/29/2009, -1/+1but iTunes is the worst , most evil part of the apple smartphone world.
