- nodonoug, on 10/10/2007, -1/+18wtf is with the rest of your post? I got the first line...and yes, I read Cubedude's post, but I'm confused as to why you copy->pasted his post into yours.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -5/+21“They will put it in the open-source world and take the economics out of the Windows Mobile business.”
Yeah...jsut like open source OSes have taken the economics out of the Windows PC business. - archlich, on 10/10/2007, -1/+17Or get the firefox bugmenot extension http://www.bugmenot.com/
- xJudahx, on 10/10/2007, -3/+17Anyone remember the South Park where they all stop shopping at Wal Mart and shop at the local drug store instead. Next thing you know, the local drug store becomes wal mart.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -8/+22People are all excited about THIS: "The cost of those phones may be partly subsidized by advertising that appears on their screens."
***** THAT. Why has no one brought up the obvious retort to this? We already have an upcoming, true open mobile phone and OS: http://openmoko.org - bovox, on 10/10/2007, -3/+13You obviously do not know how open source works, nor how its philosophy works. It is intended for all to use: commercial and non-commercial. Any modifications that Google makes to the code must be shared.
- aiten, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11Hi,
I'm one of the engineers at Google mentioned in the article. I'm afraid that the 'prototypes' you've been led to believe are for the new googlephone are in fact not. We currently don't have any prototypes, however there are a few 'artists impressions' that our design team have been coaxing out.
We don't plan to release these to the public eye as they are for internal use only, however it appears that one official prototype has already been leaked onto a number of news sites, so I don't see any harm in showing it again, here. http://www.nokiaphoneblog.com/images/googlephone.j ... - please note however that this may not in any way reflect the final design and is not authorized by google. - breckinshire, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10Your username and password didn't work for me. I think you made them mad.
- tgunner, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9I think some DICK changed them.
- bolapara, on 10/10/2007, -3/+10same
- bovox, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8The article says it's Unix based. Also, they are not designing a phone. They are designing a mobile platform that can be used on any smartphone. They are going to give it away for free, effectively neutralizing Microsoft's business model for licensing Windows Mobile.
- louiedog, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7"They offer a wide range of services but they haven't successfully dislodged any market leaders except by buying them."
Except for the one they're best known for: search engine. - Feej, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7Looking forward being able to sync it up with my organisation's Exchange Server....... oh wait.............
- XxXoldsaltXxX, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7"People are starving and dying and you want to cry cause a big nasty web page wants you to spend 30 seconds once in your life registering."
Yeah, thanks for your perspective.
Nobody gives a *****. - mrsteveman1, on 10/10/2007, -3/+8If its gpl licensed.......
If they want, they can lock the phone and prevent modifications just like Tivo. - HerbSolo, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6From the article:
"At the core of Google’s phone efforts is an operating system for mobile phones that will be based on open-source Linux software, according to industry executives familiar with the project." - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7Yes.
- rittap, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Which is quite obvious, because they wouldn't make any money out of it if they did GPL their core products.
- init100, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5"Google is a hypocrite company, they will only open source what they have to because of GPL"
Not exactly. Google has two additional features that benefit open source that they are certainly not forced to provide:
1. Each Google employee can spend 20% of his time on a personal project, which usually means some open source project.
2. Google Summer of Code. They sponsor a lot of students to contribute to a whole range of open source projects.
They aren't forced to do these things, but do them anyway. - Ferre1, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7If I have the choice between google software with commercials (ads) or windows mobile (which I'm using now) without those damn spamming ads from google, I don't need much thinking, I go without ads (spam) even when I have to pay for it. google just needs another platform for their ad business, Don't count me in making them more money.
- tybris, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5It would have to be pretty fancy, my PDA can do a lot of tricks that I desperately need.
Home synchronization over wifi, TTLS authentication for private wireless networks, playing Windows Media streams, using Orb, playing (shrunk) DVD's, bluetooth keyboard, using another bluetooth phone as modem, .Net replacement for my own applications, not to mention the abundance of software for Windows Mobile. It'll be a tough nut to crack. - sexybobo, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Because Google's search engine is more of a trade secret then software. The thing that makes google the best search engine out there is the algorithm. And if you give out the algorithm people would be able to get to the top by scamming.
- CLShortFuse, on 10/10/2007, -3/+7I take it you're not a business owner and don't know how making money works. Open Source is all neat and stuff but it's no fun living out of a cardboard box because you never sell anything and give everything away for free. Not everything should be open-source.
- whomba, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5no longer works :P
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -10/+13Yeah, the phone as another platform to ram ads down your throat. ***** that. Why do we need this?
There is a well known upcoming alternative to this *****: http://openmoko.org - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4What does that have to do with Google's plans?
- Zyphron, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4If Google made you pay for their products, AND put ads in, I would be pissed. The fact that they are free makes me not mind so much. That is kinda capitalist society right there. Do you guys whining about how everyone is a tool ever go to the hospital? Do you complain that they are using you to make money? A hospital, a police station, the government itself, and any number of other organizations and companies that we use every day are all valid examples of a capitalist society. Personally, since I enjoy getting paid for my efforts, I dont really have a problem with that.
- simd, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4For me, I'll reserve judgement until I actually see the software. I think you're kidding yourself it you think your voicemails / emails and text messages AREN'T being read by a computer somewhere.
- JoshuaGross, on 10/10/2007, -3/+6Well, it could be argued that consumers care less about their phone's OS than their computer's. Every phone is different. So if Google can create a good UI and sell it to some companies.... hey, it could work.
- subliminalurge, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Think the openmoko guys will ever redesign their phone so that it doesn't look like it was manufactured by Fisher-Price?
- coxon, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Wireless companies need to realize they have a huge opportunity here if they just open up their data networks. If they act more like an ISP (flat rate data plans) they will have every nerd and soccer mom walking around with a smart-phone and the demand for their services will explode.
- Wootery, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3"the supposedly biggest proponent of open source"
I'm not so sure. IBM and Sun are pretty high on the 'supporting FOSS' list. - jcronkhite, on 10/10/2007, -3/+5Do we have to link to password protected articles? Personally, I'd rather hear your version on a blog post in this case just so I don't have to create an account. Thanks though!
- subliminalurge, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I can see it now, my girlfriend calls to tell me she's been in a car accident and is sitting in the emergency room, but before I can talk to her my Google phone makes me listen to a 20 second commercial...........
- subliminalurge, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Actually, a great deal of the time when I do a Google search, the first several results are "sponsored links" placed ahead of the content I was actually trying to find.
At least I can take comfort in knowing that the advertising will be targeted, so when my girlfriend calls from the hospital, I'll have the opportunity to get a great deal on some new health insurance. - uknowwhoibe, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Because it being British makes it better...
- Theli, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3But are they used to and dependent on Microsoft's mobile OS the same way they are used to Microsoft's desktop OS?
On the desktop they have almost a monopoly, with professional third party software written specifically for Windows. In the smart phone market, at least according to the article, they are just another competitor. - peestandingup, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Google couldn't have picked a better time for this open source phone. With all the locked-down iPhone bitterness going around, they have a perfect chance to do the exact opposite of what Apple did & reap the benefits. Meaning offer an unlocked, cheap, open source do-whatever-you-want-with phone.
I love Apple, but they need their asses handed to them on this one & Google is just the company to do it. - steffl, on 10/10/2007, -4/+6Do we really need Google for that? There are already quite a few projects for Open-source Software on Phones and Smart-phones. Two Projects which came to my mind first:
http://maemo.org/
http://www.openmoko.com/ - dragongrrl, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2google is so smart to continue to invest money inventing more platforms for delivering ads. and consumers often benefit.
HEY VERIZON: my verizon vcast has all kinds of ads in it. why do i have to pay a monthly fee for it anyway????? - m3mn0n, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Gmail? AdSense?
- AvengeX, on 10/10/2007, -3/+4***** logging in for news. This is why people should use http://news.bbc.co.uk/ - no login required, and it's British.
- FutureGuy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Really so Google is doing this for the love of the world or because its trying to undermine MS its main competitor. Moreover as per Google's employee contract anything that the employees create during the 20% of free time is owned by Google.
