news.yahoo.com — "There's no denying PCs are losing their spunk in Japanese consumers' eyes," said Hiroyuki Ishii, a sales official at Japan's top PC maker, NEC Corp.     sure it may be convenient to beat one out in the bathroom on a train during a commute... but wouldnt the privacy of your home (or office) and a larger screen w/ larger pixels outweigh the advantages of "portable pr0n"

    PC sales may be slowing, but let's face it; you don't need a top of the line system just to get stuff done these days.
    IMO, PCs aren't going anywhere for a simple reason - the keyboard. Nobody has typewriters anymore - they've been replaced by the computer. Game consoles may replace the need to game on a PC, smartphones and other devices may let people browse the web, but when it comes to writing up a Resume or that report for school, nothing is going to beat that full-sized PC keyboard.

    You can easily find an entire community of people that believe what you believe, like what you like, eat what you eat, listen to what you listen to, buy what you buy, etc. - just realize that there are hundreds or thousands or millions of other communities with people who are just as smart, friendly, creative, and helpful - that believe, like, eat the exact opposite, and will cuss you out for disagreeing - just like you'll cuss them out for being wrong. (See the above statified companies / websites / products for examples - people will digg me down, cuss me out, and otherwise insult me becuase I got one "wrong" or all of them wrong or whatever - ignoring the rest of this comment)

    Operating systems does matter. Use Google Apps, and other online tools, and you can pretty much spend all day working on a computer, writing reports, making presentations, editing video, cropping images, building websites, listening to music, watching TV, talking to your friends, planning your Friday night out, etc - and never once leave your browser to do so.

    Thats funny cause i dont see any other devices providing the kind of access to information that a pc can nor do i see any other device being the vital and amazing educational machine that is the PC.

    When it comes to pointless, un-productive and idiot related activities like sending text messages and other consumer foolishness yah, maybe the PC is a little behind the ball and will continue to be. But when it comes to being a tool for production, creation, education and the sharing of information nothing can hold a candle to the modern PC.

    Also on the PC or mac you can back up the songs you buy no such luck on a phone unless you have guess what a computer.

  • theuniversal, on 11/05/2007, -2/+8Japan is ahead in some technology, but in other ways it is behind. The use of computers at home and in education, for example, lags way behind the USA. And in general, people in the US are more sophisticated users. That’s why PC growth is stalled here.

    If you think about where the world is going, the PC is getting more important not less. Sure, people will do a lot more with mobile devices in the coming years too, but they'll still need new PC technology. That goes for Japan as much as anywhere else. The IDC analyst will be eating his words in 10 years.

It's JAPAN, the country where size does matter more than anything! were a computer is considered a huge part of an otherwise small apartment! Also, take into account as somebody said that japanese spent alot of time working, and alot of time commuting, which means that a product such as a smart phone will own a computer every time, because you can't have a lappy with you on a japanese train!

    I fully understand the point of the article, and that's that for the common japanese, the computer's specialized functions are getting replaced with various smart devices that perform the same thing, but in a mobile way! However, that still doesn't mean that the japanese won't buy a new computer when they need to, it just means they'll buy it *less often*
  • dgh1973, on 11/05/2007, -0/+5People don't need to upgrade their PC's like mad dogs anymore, it's not like it was in the 90's (or even say 5 years ago). You get yourself a 2GHz dual core system with a gig or two of RAM and you're set these days. A two or three year old state-of-the-art PC is just as good as a brand new one in terms of CPU power today. The only "benefit" would be that you can now have Vista... and we've all heard the stories about how great that can be (/sarcasm).

Things like game consoles and the such, with a simple interface and easy to use features are going to be the future of computing. A wireless keyboard and a Wiimote ate basically all a person really needs as far as input to get anything done on a computer. I think the era of the "desktop" is over, but people will never live without computers again.

    Fark and Slashdot have a sense of humor (besides posting funny pictures). Post anything sarcastic or witty in Digg or reddit and you get buried. Quality of content is much better too...an effect of good moderators.
