- ThomasCS, on 10/12/2007, -0/+101Ok as an Australian lawyer I am unfortunately going to have to point out that this is a gimmick and you don't actually "own" the land. You get none of the benefits of land ownership according to Australian law (the main one is "exclusive possession"), and the deed that you are given - notwithstanding that it's supposedly a "legal document" - is not worth the paper it's written on.
In fact, what you are purchasing is shares in a joint venture-style agreement. They're apparently trying to get around the more stringent legal requirements by setting the applicable law as being the state of Delaware in the US, but that's not going to get anybody far. In a legal challenge, someone could just sue them for false or misleading advertising and Australian law will apply no matter what they say.
Don't get me wrong: it's not a bad idea in principle, and environmental protection is a good thing. But it is fundamentally a misrepresentation of what's happening, and people should be aware of that.
I should also note that this post is not legal advice. If you are considering buying land in this way or any other, you should consult an independent solicitor, barrister or attorney who has expertise in the given field. - t0dd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+63Guess i will add this to my moon plot and that star i bought
- theone3, on 10/12/2007, -1/+50$40? Bloddy rip off. I live in Australia. $40 for 10 sq. foot is outrageous!
(still, by all means, pour U.S. money into our country!) - TheIconster, on 10/12/2007, -1/+35Does this mean I'll have to trespass through everyone elses yard to get to my land? I fear the Australlian penalties for tresspasing
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+30"With pixels buyers received a lot of traffic to their website, with piece a land what do you get?"
google earth advertising space. - foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -1/+23Well.
1 sq. meter+one Kangaroo Trap+One Kangaroo+Export to Zoo=Profit. This is worth every penny - unreal32, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20Aha, reading the fine print (http://www.green-globe.com/legal/index.php) yields this:
"The owner of a GreenPoint – one square meter of land – has the right to prevent any activities on their lot other than greening as outlined in the next section. The owner has no additional rights, and can not use the land for any purpose.
The owner of a GreenPoint – one square meter of land – has the duty to make their lot available for greening as outlined in the next section.
The owner has no financial duties like land taxes, greening, and maintenance of the land. These costs will be paid by Green Globe Pty Ltd." - Area51mafia, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19They get to kick you in the ass with a giant boot...or so I hear. ;)
- Night, on 10/12/2007, -4/+21Taxes?
- ventro, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18Can you build ***** on your land?
- luxx, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16Yeah....I great big stinking pile of it!!
- mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15build a factory on 10 feet of land? i suppose you could install a portapotty on it..
- mc7winkie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13I would build an obscenely obnoxious 100 ft. tall tower with Christmas lights that played "Jingle Bells" on military loud speakers.
- unreal32, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10And how does one resell it? Call a real estate broker?
- leonbev, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Exactly, this is insane. Most people measure land by the acre in the US, and an acre of land equals 4,046 square meters. At $40 US per square meter, you're paying $161,840 for an acre of Australian wilderness that's probably worth less than 1% of that. Hell, you could still get an acre of buildable land in most decent US suburbs for that price.
- mfratt, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Forget about taxes, youre paying $4/sq ft for land in the middle of no where. Complete ripoff. I guess if youre an enviormentalist and really want to donate to the cause, its different, but then just give them the money without the land.
- mblitch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6It is probably just a quit claim deed. All they are doing is saying they relinquish to you all rights that they may (or may not) have in the land. I could sell any of you a quit claim deed to the White House or parcels on the moon. It doesn't mean that you'd be recognized as any owner.

anyways, so do we actually own the land? Or is it like when you adopt a highway? - theone3, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8In Australia, we talk about kilometers squared in double digits, not feet!
- mianos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6As the other Aussie guy just said, this is not legal in Australia. You don't own anything except, maybe, the bit of paper they send to you.
- Tyrekicker, on 10/12/2007, -8/+13I already own a piece of Australia. About 800 square metres worth.
- xN8x, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6funny how you posted twice
- jadoo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6With pixels buyers received a lot of traffic to their website, with piece a land what do you get?
If you want to do something for the environment start recycling! - Murdats, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6just be thankful its not in america where you got a shotgun in the face
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4This is much worse than the pixel dude.
- gooru, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4That's $173,804 per acre. Forget it. If you're interested in the environmental cause, then just buy the land yourself (no way it costs that much per acre) and don't develop it.
- aten, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4It;s been killed...
http://duggmirror.com/links/Own_a_piece_of_Australia - alphgeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Hmmm, let me do the maths on that...
Australia is about 7.686 x 10^12 square metres of land.
At US$39.90 per square metre, Australia is worth about US$3.07 x 10^14.
Now divide that by 20 million of us and we get....$15,335,265.75 each.
With my family of 4, I am now worth just a tad over $61 million!
I hereby put ALL my share of Australia on the market. Hell, you can have mine for half price...any takers? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4i wonder if they'll let me buy the grave of yahoo serious...

- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Dude, we should get the digg users together and buy us some property! we could all camp out and we will call it the diggnation.
- Zettabyte, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I think, outta middle of no where (for example, bourke). You can get a $1 per acre. Because out there the land is ***** and nothing much can be done with it.
- DoubtfulSalmon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6@foolfromhell: "one Kangaroo Trap"
You want a kangaroo, just call us up on the telephone, and we'll send you one (or part of one!)
Why, I got my first gmail accounts by hopping on gmailswap.com and offering to send folks Kangaroo scrotum coin purses! No kidding, they got their 'roo scrotums too! - foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4And scare the animals?
No one will be living there. This is a conservation project. Why not have a tall tower. With a huge sheet of metal at the top, to clock sunlight to every tree/plant within a huge range, effectively killing everyone's land?
Also, when u go bankrupt, will the creditors seize this land? Maybe...
Also, any Aussies here. Sell your house for $40/sq. meter. Will make humongous profit! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I know you are joking and all, but still...just because your own the land doesn't mean you can do whatever you want with it. Just like here in the US. Some areas are designated for certain things.
- avatarpalin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I''m thinking Condos Apartments... one meter, thirteen stories... I will make a killing!!
- jshapiro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3...or you could plant a tree in Israel. www.jnf.org
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3But that is the point! It IS in the middle of nowhere. Where the true value of the land is likely 1/10th of what it is in the developed areas like yours.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I wonder if their disclaimer holds legal water outside of zoning laws.
Do you actually own the meter or do they actually retain ownership despite claims to the contary.
does anything prevent them from reselling my meter.. atleast with the star registry, they cant resell my star. - unreal32, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"A Registered Holder is allowed to visit his Unit, by visiting he will be allowed to pass over other Units, keeping in mind not to destroy or disturb his or other Units."
- knightblade2oo4, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7So can I make a sprinkler that sprays crude oil into surrounding ecosystems?

1 acre = 4046.85642 sq meters
$161,469.57 per acre - alphgeek, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3^^^^ EEEEEKKK!!! IT'S JOHN HOWARD!!! RUN!!!
][ - NiLeS, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Wow. I was reading, looking for the connection, and couldn't find it. Then I got to chapter 5.
Neat "short" (ha!) story. - DoubtfulSalmon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3er, trust me... land is getting expensive here. I dunno about the middle of butt-fu(k nowhere (where this greenpoint thing is), but in the country where I grew up, $173K/acre rates as a bargain nowadays.
- DoubtfulSalmon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Buy the whole of New Zealand...
