- robbh66, on 10/12/2007, -10/+142$1564 For a keyboard? I've said it before, I'll say it agian: This is going to fail miserably in the mass market.
This keyboard is not revolutionary. Although this keyboard looks revolutionary, it is not that revolutionary in its practical function and usage. - Dayyve, on 10/12/2007, -3/+98$1536 - Optimus keyboard
$1400 - Russian bride to do the work for you! - airwalkery2k, on 10/12/2007, -1/+69Yeah... I think... I'll wait for a price cut. Or 20.
- cyberwiz01, on 10/12/2007, -4/+72$1536! What happened to "the price of a good mobile phone" I can buy 3 iPhones for that price.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+57... After 2 years, I just don't care.
- ARanc, on 10/12/2007, -2/+56I'd rather buy a new system for that money
- bstew22, on 10/12/2007, -1/+53The concept of the keyboard is really cool, but it is very expensive for something i am just going to spill my beer on and break.
- flernk, on 10/12/2007, -3/+53Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me 428 times, your marketing sucks.
- nullstate, on 10/12/2007, -5/+52I'm sure the OLED displays make this thing ridiculously expensive to manufacture, but I can only see the stupidly rich actually spending $1.5k on a keyboard that's just "kinda cool" in its concept.
Really, I doubt they're just being greedy. It's just this kind of idea that shows us that it's easy to bark up the wrong tree when trying to be innovative. Kudos for effort, I guess. - cayqel, on 10/12/2007, -4/+48I don't care if it's revolutionary, it's damn cool and a I want one.
...can't afford one, but still want one.
...have no real use for one, but still want one. - DiggingDeep, on 10/12/2007, -1/+41Link?
Do they C.O.D.? Return policy? - geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -4/+44"This is going to fail miserably in the mass market."
Meanwhile, at production runs of 200 at a time, I wouldn't even come *close* to calling this a "mass market" item. $10 a key, 100 keys, discounting all of the manufacturing costs other than that and these guys are not making the keyboards for the money, more for the follow through of the concept.
Start the manufacturing ramp, and maybe, just maybe you can get these things down to $3/key, but without some serious investments or a billion-dollar-backer, it's going to be the luxury keyboard of the decade. But definitely not "mass market". - kushed, on 10/12/2007, -1/+32For that price I can do two chicks at the same time.
- BESTenemy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+30With this price tag, they should have marketed it as a PS3 accessory.
- eclectro, on 10/12/2007, -4/+30Oooops! just spilled coffee! Oh crap....
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+29What, does it have a Blu Ray drive under the hood?
- jakhtar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24@chicken:
You mean besides two chicks at the same time right? - themastersb, on 10/12/2007, -3/+23So this thing is virtually indestructible and lasts for 500 years, right?
- Smeed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18It would be nice if it were in Yen too.
- tribalsun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18@flernk (#6384680)
I'd say if they fooled you 428 times their marketing is pretty good. ;-) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18You want a hug?
- Copacetic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15Assassins
/ I win
// Did not get the joke - chicken101, on 10/12/2007, -5/+19You know what I would do? Nothing.
- Ramble, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14They should've called it Optimus Prime.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15"$1536"
HAHAHAAH ***** OFF!
Is this in rubels? - Aliasing, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Look for this to become the tech sector gadget status symbol amongst the newly minted geek millionaires crowd.
- geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13"that's what happens when an art studio tries to develop a tech product. they should have licensed their patents a long time ago"
Problem A: "Patents Pending". You can't license a patent that you don't own.
Problem B: There aren't going to be a lot of companies with enough balls to actually ship this kind of product; it's crazy-complex (100+ displays per keyboard, electronics, drivers, custom tooling).
To put it frankly: either they did it, or it didn't happen (at least for another 10 years when OLED/TFT production for screens those sizes go under a buck). - syruplord, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Is it really worth it to be able to change what the keys look like? I have an idea! It's called masking tape + sharpie!
[This message was typed on a keyboard that cost $7] - merreborn, on 10/12/2007, -5/+15"In soviet Russia keyboard faps on you!!"
So *that's* what they mean when they advertise certain Russian brides as coming with a "bonus package"...
Nevermind, that was bad. - sctechguy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10You do know that, ever since Win98, you've been able to shut that key off...don't you?
- seventoes, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11To be fair, this is not a bad price for a new technology. As the comments in the Optimus blog said, people had to pay $15 for a CD so they could use their mighty Yamaha 2x CD burner.
Still though... Comonnnnn... - veriix, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Now all we need is some $80 monster cables to hook it up.
- tizz66, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9I realise this is advanced technology, but for that price it had better be damn near perfect in every other way. If the feel of a key press doesn't suit me 100%, it instantly becomes a waste of money. I just can't see how it's going to suit everyone perfectly, and I can't see many people buying it unless it does.
- davidrools, on 10/12/2007, -9/+16that's what happens when an art studio tries to develop a tech product. they should have licensed their patents a long time ago and ended up making a ton of money and we'd all have these keyboards for $100.
- Yoshi39, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6"Do they C.O.D.? Return policy?"
I actually read that as D.O.C ( date of conception) and thought to myself wtf why would anyone want to buy a pregnant Russian mail order bride >) - slkuhn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Que?
- wmarcello, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@eplawless
For apps like Photoshop and Flash, does anybody seriously look at their keys for the shortcut? 'V' is the move tool. I don't need to see a fancy icon on the keyboard to know what key to hit. Same goes for gaming. - geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7"What happened to "the price of a good mobile phone""
That was three display manufacturers ago. When you start to realize these guys aren't making more than 800 in their first three production runs (that's 800 * 100 keys = 800,000 32x32 pixel displays at $8 Million), you can start to realize why. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8A Japanese or South Korean company would have done a brilliant job at this. Samsung LED keyboard for $499. It'd be an ENORMOUS hit.
- MrFlesh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Hey when cellphones first came out they were $2200 and were in a briefcase.
- macoafi, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6They're Russian. "Good mobile phone" in Moscow means something insane like a Vertu. "Good mobile phone" in the US means "I used Verizon for two years so I got an upgrade for only $70! Isn't my phone neat?!"
- number9ine, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Can someone help me think of some nine letter words that only contain four unique letters?
- davidrools, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Manufacturer's page:
http://www.artlebedev.com/everything/optimus/ - klaymen2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3gross, you skeet onto your keyboard?
- Smeed, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8***** that.
- leoCT, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I still think it is vaporware.
- kingkilr, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7I can think of only one person who might have any use for this, his keyboard is covered in thingies that tell you what every key does in various programs, however I don't think he'd pay this much.
- Forever-Zero, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9I have $1,500. I can buy either:
a) An Optimus Keyboard
or
b) A new computer with good specs, that comes with a free keyboard! - MrFlesh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4You people shouldn't knock this keyboard. You know as well as I that when you first saw it you thought it was kick ass. Yeah the price sucks but it will drop as component costs come down and production ramps up. Proffesionals and people wanting to use it for displays will be the ones to pick it up first. What better way to pull people to your booth than one of these keyboards playing a keysaver? Sure there will be some people that will spend the money just to get one...it would be handy for gamming. I hope it sells well so I can pick one up when the price drops.
- thekms, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8Weren't their initial estimates like around $300 if I remember correctly?
Damn, I got excited... I was looking forward to it too. Guess I'll just buy a Mac instead. -
