- Hojohto, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7The majority of bloggers fail hard.
- schestowitz, on 10/11/2007, -5/+11It should say "crowdsourcing", not "Open-Source". Open Source refers to software development as a paradigm, even a business model. We don't need to dilute this heavily abused term even more.
- Newmaniese, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5As a journalist I would love to say that crowd-sourcing and open-source journalism is a bad idea but essentially the voice of everyone is amplified on the internet and we can no longer ignore people that would have been swept under the carpet in the decades past. That being said, building a reputation, a high level of editing and encouraging a third party perspective are the things that true journalists hold that separates them from the typical blogger.
- DigiDave, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4This really was an interesting experiment in journalism. This story doesn't give the full picture.
For example in this introductory note: at the bottom is a directory of 80 interviews that the Assignment Zero team did with leaders in the world of crowdsourcing: http://www.wired.com/techbiz/media/news/2007/07/assignment_zero_all
I'm biased (I worked heavily on the project) but I think the work on Assignment Zero is hands-down the biggest collection of work on the subject of crowdsourcing.
Now: Imagine if we used similar methods to cover a subject of great social importance (education, the environment, etc) -- this experiment covered a techie subject -- but the potential for groups of people to work together on a story alongside professional journalists -- is very intriguing to me. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5As most people, including many so-called journalists, do not know what journalism actually is or how it is actually done, I would say "open source"/crowdsourcing is a bad idea.
- DigiDave, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4It's a bit of both. The reporting was crowdsourced -- but the content is also under a creative commons license -- anyone else can use and improve on the original reporting.
But I understand where you are coming from -- the term is abused. Sometimes it's hard to know if another project is staying true to the OS paradigm. - bobcrotch, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Open Source is becoming one of those buzz words just like Hack(ing).
Sad sad day. - DigiDave, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Hmm... In journalism there is no "source." If you are looking for some kind of code -- then no. Well, then again, we did develop a specific CMS with Drupal (and that literally is open source) -- but in journalism the "source" is usually your reporting. And in this situation -- the reporting can be worked, re-worked, added too, etc etc.
- liquidizer, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Completely unreadable article - can't get the blasted full screen ad to close in Firefox.
- zeptobyte, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2So it's under a CC license, oh well. It's still not "source". -_-
- DigiDave, on 10/11/2007, -3/+4I would disagree.
It's a return to the Cult of Amateur debate.
Another thing to realize -- journalism is not like practicing medicine -- you don't need a Ph.d to do it -- in fact, in American its a right -- something that should be practiced. - sanman, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Hi, can anyone explain to me what this Google video was saying?
http://www.fraize.com/blog/?p=88
I watched it 3 times, and I still couldn't understand every 3rd word that he spoke. I think that guys like this are typically just actors reading from teleprompters, and he probably didn't know what he was saying either.
So can some of the crowdsourced know-it-alls tell me WTF he meant?
I couldn't tell if it was a warp drive or a pencil sharpener. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Sounds like you, yourself, do not know what journalism is.
- Atomic1fire, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1communism is a form of goverment that is essentially a community
with no head figure
the only problem is someone gets greedy
with the internet someone can get greedy but they cant completely control everyone else - kuzotz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1bah I had to travel the world freelancing to become a journalist of moderate reputation.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1But most people don't practice journalism.
"Journalism: The style of writing characteristic of material in newspapers and magazines, consisting of direct presentation of facts or occurrences with little attempt at analysis or interpretation."
That is not what most people do. What most people do is Propaganda: "The systematic propagation of a doctrine or cause or of information reflecting the views and interests of those advocating such a doctrine or cause"
Maybe you should learn the difference. - daftman, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Does your understanding of the word communism only limits to any word that relates to community or crowd, etc? Are your parents extreme conservatives who refuse to let you have a proper education?
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Pajamas Media, anyone?
- insomniac8400, on 10/11/2007, -5/+1Why would journalists want to be communists? As history tells us, communism doesn't work.
