- balibones, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I didn't. The shoe store thing was just an example of how ridiculous this could get if the guy actually wins a lawsuit. But I doubt something like this would ever made it into court. At least I hope not.
- bs3arch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Anyone know of the search term in question?
- leadingzero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I really want to know what term he is using. It would be great to have other bloggers set up a googlebomb for that term to the guy's blog as a means to educate the store owner how exactly Google works.
- toomuchpete, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You're right, and that's why the title of the article is inaccurate (but this is far too interesting to bury).
The guy never said he was going to sue, just said his lawyer was going to send a letter. In all actuality, the guy probably doesn't even HAVE a lawyer.
It would take a miracle for this guy to find an attorney who would be willing to even file a suit here (I can't think of a single grounds on which he would have a glimmer of a case), let alone get the suit past a pre-trial motion to dismiss.
The "my lawyer is sending a letter" thing is just a scare tactic. - sfatoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2http://www.digg.com/tech_news/Bizzare_Google_Request
"I am off to bed soon. All this excitement has drained me.
I may post the search term and the URL on Monday to prove that this is 100% true.
If he sends me another threatening e-mail then I will definately post it. Also, if the Matt Cutts that just posted on my blog is the REAL Matt Cutts then maybe he will post the keyphrase on his blog.
Have a good day and thanks for your comments."

deano, it's Monday already and he already sent another threatening email. Spill the beans! What's the search query?? - surfing, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Just found this article on the lawyer:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gil_%28The_Simpsons%29 - ForbesBingley, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2This guy sounds like my old boss. He's a dick of truly unimaginable proportions.
It's just the kind of brain-dead logic he'd apply to something like this and get litigious about it, too... - monkeyboy7706, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Actual Blog is here http://deanhunt.com/ two posts are http://deanhunt.com/bizzare-google-request/ and http://deanhunt.com/bizarre-google-request-update/

I think it would actually be very easy to find a lawyer to take this on.
1. A lawyer who doesn't know how search engines work either
2. A lawyer who sees the potential publicity
3. Greed! Either way the lawyer gets paid - dknighton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Welcome to life in the age of entitlement. I'd like to know exactly how much money he thinks Google has made off him that warrants his business receiving preferential ranking over someone else.
- SweetyCheeks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What I don't understand is the perceived lack of logic. What's he threatening that other web site for? They just happen to be a web site that Google crawled and ranked a page above one of his. If anything he should be threatening Google because the web site owner did not provide the search service. In any event, we can all imagine that Google would probably tell the guy to get lost.
If he'd spend the same amount of energy working to improving his content, etc. for rankings, he'd probably get positive results. It seems some people appear to work harder not to work. (sic). - mistercharlie, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2That guy's got about a snowball's chance in hell on this one.
- cosequin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0unless you use frontpage, which is the least intuitive page editor ever.
im dying to find out the keyword, the guy can be my 2nd seo client! - Jammerdelray, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Someone needs to tell the guy that wants to sue to sit down and shut up.
- franktank, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0classic. sell him an inbound link from your blog.
- cosequin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Old Gil's finally got his first case, ha-cha-cha-cha-cha-cha-cha!
Who is it against? GOOGLE? Oh boy gil's going to sleeping in the hot air balloon for awhile! - JimMessenger, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1That's two great laughs this morning.
- pumpedvideo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1That's total BS
- coit, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1How did you find out what store it was?
- balibones, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2Yea I blogged about this earlier today right after I saw the page you submitted: http://www.firstpagefitness.com/blog/2006/12/11/rotflmao-a-cincinnati-shoe-store-joke/ . Couldn't stop laughing...
