fix'd - mark076h, on 02/03/2009, -3/+207If you pay for your internet service then nothing is free, it's just like an all you can eat buffet.
- dnRoyston, on 02/03/2009, -1/+146And these are only the people who admit to it. Can I join the list? <3 Pirates
- inactive, on 02/03/2009, -4/+146Why "pirate"? Convenience, quality, sampling.
I don't know about other countries, but in Canada torrents of many shows are often available a lot sooner and often (sadly) in higher quality than broadcast. Also, I'd gladly pay for good quality digital downloads, but there is no pay service providing most of the shows I am interested in watching.
I also like to sample via torrents. If I like a show I will usually buy DVDs to watch in best possible quality, e.g. Arrested Development, Firefly, 30 Rock, Dr Who, The Tudors, BSG.
Those are some reasons that I "pirate", I'm sure others have even better reasons. - jos22, on 02/03/2009, -3/+124that you wouldn't steal a .. campaign was the one of the most retarded ads I ever saw. The IT crowrds piss take on it was priceless

http://ie.youtube.com/watch?v=964MLq1db4s - Armor1901, on 02/04/2009, -4/+97If it's on Hulu, I'll absolutely watch it there before I go and pirate it. I have no problems watching a couple 15-30 second ads on there in exchange for the show. Quality is decent, too. If it isn't on Hulu, I'm pirating it because I simply don't want to pay for something I can get for free. Digg me down if you want, but 99% of everyone else who pirates has the exact same mentality: free stuff. There's no sugar coating it, we pirate because we don't have to pay. When it comes to things like the App Store, I have no problem paying .99 to 5.00 for apps. That isn't a big deal. But I don't want to put down 25 bucks (or more if it's like a set or season) because I can get it for free. Bottom line, if I can watch it online (almost) whenever I want in decent quality in exchange for having to put up with some ads, I'll gladly do it. Otherwise, it's getting pirated. This BS that other pirates put out about "Oooo I want to test it before I buy!" or "I don't want DRM" is 100% crap. We pirate because it doesn't cost us money.

- SniperZero, on 02/04/2009, -4/+50a pirate steals ***** we merely copy it.
- Vektuz, on 02/04/2009, -1/+45Lets see - you can "pirate" download a divx/h264 encoded video of your favorite TV show, no matter what episode or season, no matter what country of origin, for free, and it will work on any device you want to copy it to, work for an unlimited amount of time, on every machine you own, wherever you take it, and you can also burn it to disk for long term storage. For free.
Or you can pay real money for a legitimate, but DRM protected, limited time use copy that can only be played on select hardware, or proprietary software cannot be transferred or shared, and will probably be lost if the service terminates or you need to switch machines. Also, not all shows are available, and not all episodes are available due to market timing and/or copyright law and/or plain greed. Also, there are sometimes commercials even if you paid for it.
HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM what an interesting choice. - kangy3213, on 02/04/2009, -4/+47Do what you want cause a pirate is free
- UberNick, on 02/04/2009, -1/+42"having downloaded movies or TV-shows illegally... aware that their habits are illegal"
I'm so sick of the assumption that downloading = illegal. Show me some ***** legal precedence here, at least in the US, where a single person has has been convicted for downloading (not distributing) a movie. It's an even bigger stretch to show illegality for downloading a TV show!
If anyone here can point to examples, especially in the US, where a judge has decided that this is, in fact, illegal, I'd be eternally grateful! - Twag86, on 02/04/2009, -1/+41YE BE WARNED, SAYS AYE, LET NOT DOWN YER GUARD LEST THE MPAA AND RIAA ,THE TWIN BEASTS OF THE DEEP, CLAIM YER SOUL
- AngelBunny, on 02/03/2009, -5/+45what is with the term pirate anyways? shouldn't it be copyright infringement? at least pirates are awesome! arg!

- jos22, on 02/03/2009, -0/+38you forget that one person will keep their friends and family supplied with goods. so that makes up for the 2 of the 3 . 1 seeder and two leechers.
- inactive, on 02/03/2009, -1/+39I do "pirate" sometimes, but it's almost entirely older movies and television which have already passed their peaks, and would probably be impossible to find legally anyhow. I have no moral qualms whatsoever about downloading a movie that's already a decade old.
- AndrewDB, on 02/04/2009, -1/+38The other two are trying to figure out how to ask the other one how to pirate stuff without looking stupid.
- ileftfark, on 02/04/2009, -2/+39Dugg for honesty. And hey, some companies are actually starting to get the message. The old system no longer works. Adapt. Hulu and others are actually changing who pirates and how much. Why wait 20 minutes for your torrent to download and take up HDD space when South Park or The Office (or whatever) are available in good-quality streams, right now, for free? I understand that much of this is US-only right now, but that will change. Or people will get it 'illegally'.
- Gizza, on 02/04/2009, -0/+34Would it be considered irony that you only ever see those warnings after you have actually bought the product. That's essentially the same as placing an ad marketing a product on the product itself after it's already been bought.

- MotoFly, on 02/04/2009, -1/+33Seriously. I think whomever decided to start calling illegal downloading: "piracy", and downloaders: "pirates" should have picked a word not regularly assigned to historic bad asses.
It just makes the whole process way more appealing. - inactive, on 02/04/2009, -1/+31Heh - I download a show I could watch on the Internet legally for free, and suddenly I'm a criminal for wanting to avoid buffering issues.
- inactive, on 02/04/2009, -4/+34So... is there something wrong with that?
It's 2009. I thought we established years ago that downloading isn't stealing. - X0rn, on 02/04/2009, -1/+31that`s exactly how it is...
You always hear about how many pirates there are online an stuff, but seriously: do you know someone who does not have a burned CD??
90% of all people are pirates. It does not matter if they have internet or not - inactive, on 02/04/2009, -0/+29BEWARE OF THE SCURVIEST DISEASE OF ALL, SCURVY! FEAST UPON THESE ORANGES AND PULL INTO THE PIRATE BAY! YARR!
- Asmordean, on 02/04/2009, -0/+28Doctor Who on CBC is a joke. Not only is it shown 6 to 12 months after the rest of the planet has watched it they even chop bits of the episodes off to make it fit their schedule or cut it off entirely for Hockey.
CBC's explaination for the chopping 19 minutes off the finale? "Journey's end was 63 minutes long (without commericals) when it was broadcast on the BBC earlier this year. Doctor Who's timeslot on the CBC unfortunately only allows for 44 minutes when you take out the commercials. So cuts were made."
Here's a though. Why not make it a 2 parter with extra commercials instead of just chopping 30% of the show? - frontaxle, on 02/04/2009, -1/+26Shiver me Torrents!
- Eurynom0s, on 02/04/2009, -1/+25Yeah, that pisses me off the most, when you like something enough that you would buy it legally, but CAN'T because the copyright holder is being a douche and is refusing to reissue the movie/book/whatever in question, won't license it to someone else to let them do it, etc etc.
So, I CAN'T buy it, unless I happen to find a used copy, but that doesn't benefit the copyright holder either obviously, yet it's still considered stealing in the normal sense of the word to pirate it? Downloading a full season of an obscure 50's TV show that is not popular enough to EVER put on DVDs but which someone holds a valid copyright on is NOT "stealing" in the same way that busting into the TV studio and stealing the originals is.
This also goes for academic works where the copyright holder pulls similar BS. - ryanonfire, on 02/04/2009, -1/+25Pfft what's wrong with stealing babies.

- chromerium, on 02/04/2009, -2/+21Well, duh.
Its more convenient. I get to watch stuff here in Australia days or months before it would normally be shown here, without ads, and if I want I can grab HD versions which are great.
I would happily pay a subscription fee to recompense the media owners, $15 a month say, in return for a system that works much like uTorrent + eztv + rss, as long as they make it not require some stupid bit of hardware or have DRM.
Just, click to subscribe, then have a Mac/Windows/Linux app that I can run (if I want) that lets me browse whats scheduled and what has been freshly downloaded.
... but they don't offer this. So I'll pirate until they do. It's their loss. - wayenough119, on 02/04/2009, -0/+19YARR...THERE BE ENOUGH INTERNETS FOR ALL YE PIRATES........MATEY
