- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+92Please AMD..create some decent Linux drivers for the graphic cards!
- deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -1/+76frankinla: Your Xbox 360 has an ATI graphics chip in it.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -20/+80amd + nvidia = love
If only amd bought nvidia, not ati... - iamhumble, on 10/12/2007, -3/+57I am sure nVidia and Intel will now have a stronger bond...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+53Yes, like perhaps some FRICKIN' ATI LINUX DRIVERS THAT DON'T SUCK!!!!
- uptown, on 10/12/2007, -5/+48Where does it leave NVidia? Up about 6% so far today.....
- millixaw, on 10/12/2007, -1/+42"If only amd bought nvidia, not ati..."
AMD would have gone bankrput. Nvidia is too big to be purchased by AMD. Intel, maybe, but not AMD. Nvidia isn't really in a position to want to be purchased anyway. When you're #1, why would you want to be bought out? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -26/+65Who gives a rats ass what the twits think, they are not the gods of tech, they are nothing more than talking heads, they have no idea the true reason why AMD bought ATI, the twits have nothing more than pure speculation, half the time they predict something they are dead wrong. i think this is great and hopefully they will have better driver support for Linux.
- datagod, on 10/12/2007, -6/+41They bought ATI because ATI is profitable and has a TON of IP.
AMD will further the develop the relationship between the CPU and various GPU/PPU etc.
I think this is great, as I am a huge AMD fanboy, and I think ATI has done wonders for the graphics industry by challenging Nvidia every step of the way. - MikeEnIke, on 10/12/2007, -3/+37You are an idiot. If AMD was bought by Intel that would be the worst possible thing that could happen. Processors would no longer be developed in any sory of timely manner, and they could raise prices to whatever the hell they wanted. A Market without competition is horrible market. Look at Windows, why do you honestly thing Vista is coming out so much later than XP? It's because they saw no need to upgrade, people were content, and it's not like they had any competition. It probably would have been later if Mac and Linux weren't recently moving up in the world. Still want Intel to buy AMD?
- Swimming_Bird, on 10/12/2007, -8/+38how about you make some decent ATI drivers for ANY OS. I've never liked ATI even when their hardware was better because their drivers have always been *****
- perryge, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21On that note, wasn't there talk of Apple switching to nVidia to power its next generation iPods?
- themuffinman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19Yeah, because no competition for intel would surely be the best thing for the consumers. Wait, isn't competition the only thing that keeps the prices down and the technology evolving quickly? Nah, forget about that, as long as all the video cards are working with the 5-year-old intel chip that is still top of the line becuase intel doesn't need to do anything to keep its market share.
edit: beaten to it... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19I like AMD's work ethic. Hopefully this will fuel better technology and innovation for ATI.
- dustyshadow, on 10/12/2007, -11/+25@fani
We marked them inaccurate because the articles said something like "planning to buy" or "in talks with" and the Digg posters posted titles like "AMD Buys ATI" which was inaccurate from the article. Maybe you should improve your reading comprehension before you bitch at people. - Nerevar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14I just hope the relationship between AMD and NVIDIA doesn't sour. NVIDIA makes the best chipsets for AMD platforms, just look at the nForce 4 and 5 chipsets.
- mc7winkie, on 10/12/2007, -23/+35STFU!! You're one of the hundreds of people on digg who won't accept the fact that AMD is buying ATI. It's very annoying considering there are multiple stories being released and all you have to say it's "inaccurate." Well, I'm marking you as "inaccurate", considering you won't accept the truth when it's right in front of your face.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Er... Actually, Microsoft has enough of a domination of the market (how many pre-built machines do you see shipping blank or with linux?) of 'users' as opposed to 'specialists' to say that they DO have a monopoly...
- ccheath, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13THAT would be one of the coolest things to come out of this (besides the 4x4.. whatever that is)
- fani, on 10/12/2007, -22/+33Haha. This past week, all digg stories of ATI buying AMD were being marked by Diggers as "Possibly Inaccurate"
This confirmation proves otherwise. Looks like people are eager to bury down stories they don't believe in instead of checking if it is accurate. - Aculeus, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14@pegisys: The only way I can get my ATI card to work and not crash every few minutes while playing a game is to use a third party driver. http://www.omegadrivers.net/ fixes some bugs and optimizes ATI's drivers. The ATI drivers were unusable to me a year ago when I got my laptop with an ATI card. They may have improved by then but the Omega Drivers have always worked for me.
- MikeEnIke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10I'm not sure if I like the merger of the two. I think it will create some very nice integrated performance between the two and should see very possilbe performance boost. Unfortunately for me, I am an Nvidia guy because they tend to have the best bang for the buck ( I don't mean always ) and I'm hoping this doesn't disallow the use of Nvidia on AMD boards. I'm also hoping big time that they would still use Nforce series chips on the AMD Supported Motherboards.
- mbthompson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11I smell Matrox making a comeback baby! :-P
- f1055man, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10No I must not recognize it. ATI drivers are crap crap crap.
- rizzle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I doubt this would happen, but more than drivers, I would hope that somehow AMD would help fix the always-nasty software they have with their drivers. Always using some crappy front-end and never seeming to provide as many features as Nvidia Control Panel.
- davidv, on 10/12/2007, -15/+22In last nights TwiT they made it pretty clear that this has almost no actual benifit to AMD so why would they go through with the deal?
- chubbymidget, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7WoW!
I love AMD but I've never had a stable ATI product.
How could this not hurt AMD/Nvidia partnering.... - Araxen, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8AMD................Make ATI support Linux better!
- PCDirect, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7@rizzle
I could not agree more. The only thing that separates ATI from nVidia most of the time is their crappy drivers and Crapalyst control panel. Not much of fan of ATI as of late. They do have great video performance, but the lack of good drivers is enough for me to stay away.
While I am a user of nVidia product currently, I am using them out of lack of a better product. They have been the best solution for AMD platforms for some time now. If you are using VIA, SiS, or ATI chipsets, I feel bad for you.
I just hope that AMD can put some R&D infusion into the ATI chipset and make a better alternative to nVidia chipsets. If not, then I will just stick with nVidia. The whole Crossfire solution seems to be a duck taped answer to SLI just as Intel's Pentium D series was to the X2 CPUs. - Antebios, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!
AMD and nVidia would be MUCH BETTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! - ccheath, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8while it may not be "official" yet... a deal has been reached.
"
Under the terms of the transaction, AMD will acquire all of the outstanding common shares of ATI for a combination of $4.2 billion in cash and 57 million shares of AMD common stock, based on the number of shares of ATI common stock outstanding on July 21, 2006. All outstanding options and RSUs of ATI will be assumed. Based upon the closing price of AMD common stock on July 21, 2006 of $18.26 a share, the consideration for each outstanding share of ATI common stock would be $20.47, comprised of $16.40 of cash and 0.2229 shares of AMD common stock.
AMD anticipates it will finance the cash portion of the transaction with a combination of cash and new debt. AMD has obtained a $2.5 billion term loan commitment from Morgan Stanley Senior Funding, Inc. which, together with combined existing cash, cash equivalents, and short term investments balances of approximately $3.0 billion, provides full funding for the transaction.
ATI has received an opinion from its financial advisors that the transaction from a financial point of view is fair to its shareholders. The transaction was unanimously approved by the board of directors of each company. The transaction is subject to ATI shareholder approval, Canadian court supervision of a Plan of Arrangement, and other regulatory approvals including merger notification filings in the United States, Canada and other jurisdictions, as well as customary closing conditions. In the event that the transaction does not close, ATI has agreed to pay AMD a termination fee of $162.0 million under circumstances specified in the acquisition agreement. The transaction is expected to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2006." - mateo60, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6AMD needs to be bought by Intel? That's the stupidest f*cking thing I've ever heard.
Thats just what we need, one chip company with %99 marketshare. - themuffinman, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10Only the last two words in the title are inaccurate. This isn't really so bad for NVidia. If Intel cuts ATI out, which they will, then NVidia has a near-monopoly on Intel's high-end graphics card market. Remind me again who has more market share: Intel or AMD? Also, I wouldn't assume that AMD will completely cut out NVidia's products either. They don't seem to be in the habit of doing such things, at least I like to think so.
- count_z, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@neosublime.
That's insane. AMD doesn't have a decent mobile product (which is one of the main reasons that Apple went with Intel: IBM couldn't deliver a mobile G5 processor). Also AMD STILL doesn't have a decent motherboard chipset (buying ATI sure as heck doesn't change that). - dBLiSS, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I am really tired of all this fanboyism on all sides (be it intel, amd, ati, or nvidia).. What consumers should really care about is competition and getting the best hardware for the lowest prices. so enough with the pissing contests between fanboys. These are CORPORATIONS not your family or favorite sports team.
- megabytehl, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Won't happen, intel has apple on lockdown. Both companies are gaining marketshare, both companies are quite content. Apple didn't jump ship on IBM until they had sucked them down to barely 1% of marketshare and the intel/apple combo shows absolutely no sign of slowing.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@ Swimming_Bird
You can always use the Omega ATI drivers for Windows. Linux users are given the shaft however. - V1ncent, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Might be great news for Nvidia. Sometimes when a company is bought the choices made by the buyer isn't good news save for their competitors.
- megabytehl, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5With ATI onboard AMD can finally make moves that intel isn't willing to counter. This pricing war has been great, and will continue to be great until AMD-ATI really hits fruition, then we might see intel fall behind in the gaming arena.
- pcgammerm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4whats wrong with AMD in Xbox?
AMD have incredible CPUs
it hasn't been till the new cornroe that intel has managed to get ahaed in the CPU section. and even so, the avgerage person isn't going to go with the extreme high end system, they are going to go with what afordable (ie AMD) with AMD's price drops they should be able to sell more to the avg user and clear out some old stock so they can come back with the K8L to try and beat the cornroe, if that proc can. - clickwir, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5so theres hope that they can still back out!??!?! Lets hope the wise up and kick ATI to the curb!
- pingviini, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Won't the Wii run on an ATi card. How do you think this merger will affect the Wii?
- sailor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Linux & AMD & NVidia = love
Fix the ATI dirvers and you may hae a chance - rileyjt, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8Until now it was just a rumor and deserved to be marked innacurate because most of the articles were reporting the rumor as fact. Now that the merger is official - its a different story.
- MikeCerm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3AMD needed a way to compete with the Centrino juggernaut. This gets them closer to being able to provide a singular, energy-efficient platform to anyone who wants one. AMD + ATI Xpress = AMD Xpress. Look for it in your next non-Centrino Duo laptop.
This gives ATI and AMD better access to each other's intellectual property, and will make each better in the long term. Short term, you won't notice any changes. ATI will still compete with Nvidia, AMD with Intel. AMD will just have a new arrow in their quiver. - smergs, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4There is no way to check if something is accurate if hasn't been officially announced yet. It was just "officially" announced today.
- mobilehavoc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It's just a matter of time until they start incorporating the GPU as a separate core in an AMD CPU. This will allow ridiculous performance because you will have shared cache, memory and the fastest bus available between the two.
Can't wait. - Mooinakan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5This is big, big news.
- shinynew, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5@kingfoot
thats a big if. I for one am a AMD64 + Nvidea. - AlmostEvil, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@MikeEnIke
Sorry, no flaming meant. I just felt like giving some info on my experience with nvidia. -
