- ZigVicious, on 10/11/2007, -2/+14it's on the BBC. The BBC don't do rumours.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -4/+13I doubt people here would pay more than £100 for a phone if they were already paying for a contract. Besides, unlike Americans, us from Europe tend to value substance as high as style, if not higher. Wacked-out Americans will buy anything Apple tells them to.
- LayZ, on 10/11/2007, -3/+12O2 had better come up with some decent data plans - but then again how many people are going to use megs and megs on slow ass GPRS?
- manicleek, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8It hasn't forced any competitors to have better features, better interface maybe, but not features. My last 3 phones have had better features than the iPhone, which as far as I'm concerned means the iPhone is out of date by 3 years.
iPhone will do well in America because they have ***** mobile phones anyway, but anyone buying one elsewhere is just a gadget and/or apple freak - mickhead, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Based on the ps3, which is $600 dollars, the iphone which is also $600, is more likely to be around the ps3s UK price, around £425.
At least thats my logic, flawed as it may be. I can't see it being £300. - manicleek, on 10/11/2007, -6/+13I'm with O2, not buying an iPhone though, they're *****
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8Too true - if they charge over £100 they wont sell any of them.
Over here we actually want to know what features this phone comes with - apart from the touch screen (which is purely cosmetic) it actually has LESS functionality than a phone you can get for free on a normal contract so why anyone would pay £300 for less is a bit beyond me. - greatkingrat85, on 10/11/2007, -5/+11It's going to cost around £300 on top of the contract. I say, the best thing about the iPhone is that it's forced competitors to up their standards to make cheaper handsets with better features and UI.
The iPhone has shown competitors what the public want from a phone and what we're willing to pay, so I'll wait for the Sony Ericsson alternative for less than half the price. - spudnic, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7I think people over here are too used to getting the phone and upgrades free with the contract to pay iPhone prices, unless it's the same in America
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Um no they're not - they have some the most competitive rates on the market (especially if you barter them down on renewal day). Not to mention the best coverage in the UK.
- CircleFusion, on 10/11/2007, -3/+8(ignore)
- CTroup, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5I dont think the Iphone will do nearly as well here as in the US, unless they have a massive marketing campaign coming up especially for us (which they probably do). If they solve all of the ridiculous flaws like not getting into the battery (and presumably, the sim), the lack of MMS and Video recording and some of the other stuff I could see it managing a lot more. The amount of attention Apple gets for its fairly ordinary products is totally beyond me. I dont have anything against them but none of it exactly blows me away. Just a bunch of empty gimmicks.
- h3ndrix, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6wtf is an L Phone?
- Trention, on 10/11/2007, -4/+8Uh, dupe?
http://digg.com/apple/O2_beats_rivals_in_battle_for_the_rights_to_Apple_s_iPhone - spudnic, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4I don't know what the contract service is like, but I've got absolutely no complaints with the pay as you go service
- uncleLeo, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5this is NOT a tech deal, it is Apple related news, buried, put it in the right topic next time (and then you won't hear me complain since i block apple stories)
- dillonstars, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4most new phones that come 'free' with a contract are worth about £200, some more, so that makes the iPhone cost £500 if the £300 surcharge rumour is true.
That's one expensive phone - especially with reports of the camera being so ***** and only 4Gb or 8Gb of storage space for music that can't be upgraded.
No thanks. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Oh good, I'm glad they front paged this story just in case I missed the exact same story 9 down on the front page.
/Sick to death of the iphone nonsense. - beerbarron, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Data plans are all great, but you got to have coverage, and o2 are certainly a lot better in rural parts of England. Becides the iPhone is coming here, so it doesnt really matter who the vendor is! Like stated before, they cant be tied to one network, which means that its great news for anyone!
- MrMighty, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Yep: "A spokesman for O2, which is owned by Spain's Telefonica, declined to comment on the reports."
- Leowyatt, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3They haven't won it yet.
http://digg.com/apple/O2_Deny_UK_Exclusive_Deal - TexanPsycho, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I'm not bothered which network it is, the only thing I don't like is the 6 month delay. And please, for the love of god, do not put a network logo on it. Please!
- guise, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Perfect. My contracts about to finish. I wonder if theyll be doing upgrades.
- Myonosken, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2No the BBC don't do rumours.
- stormgren, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2It's like that for most contracts in America too. The most I've paid for a phone was $75, which is less than £40. (Damn, the dollar is weak now.). And you generally get a new or upgraded phone every year or so, maybe less.
- wylddog, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3my service with o2 has been brilliant. i had pay as you go for about 5 years and am now on a decent contract and havent had any problems
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2That's exactly what I was trying to say :)
The phones in the US are awful (like the cars), so the iPhone stands out a mile. - bwishey, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3How did what is essentially the same story get on the front page twice...?
Oh well. Buried the later the of the two. - superkendall, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Apple has always said they would use 3G in markets where it made sense. Almost certainly, Europe is getting a 3G iPhone.
- spudnic, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1When did you last look? That just isn't true.
https://shop.o2.co.uk/tariffhub - mosfet, on 10/11/2007, -4/+5I'm glad the Vodafone rumour has been dispelled. I spent the last 6 years with them and recently switched to O2, much better customer experience, much better reception and a better deal. They will have to sort out a new data plan for the iPhone, but I'm sure they'll handle it better than AT&T and Vodafone.
- Tippis, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2"Mobile phone operator O2 is *reported to* have won..."
Yes they do. Even the headline is a quote -- not a statement. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Not to mention a battery that can't be replaced.
- Tippis, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Yes. It has been hidden on page 2 by now, but this is a dupe -- or, if you prefer, "a confirmation" ;)
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1More like ***** off Americans. No-one cares about 'Ron Paul' (who?) or Apple products.
- birdieb23, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1its even in the fiancial times for christs sake. sounds pretty certain
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1If you spend £300 on that piece of ***** you're a total retard. Good luck with that *makes crazy gesture*
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Erm, they're strict, but no-one gives a *****. People unlock their phones like hellfire.
- lrmulli, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0well i wonder whether this http://idogandbone.co.uk/article.php?id=9 advert is true then???
- Metaphor, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1inaccuracy? Show me where O2 comes first in 3G coverage in the UK (which is what I pointed out in relation to their service).
- starlord1, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2I spend megs and megs on gprs at the moment, hopefully my ridiculous sized bills will give me a good iPhone price.
- gooffgrid, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0must have wifi
- zeugma, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Yes, just as my contract runs out!
Now I'm happy that I didn't go with Orange.
...but £300? I better start saving. - Myonosken, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1On contrac, they've fallen well behind the opposition. Wheras most, like orange, are now offering nice packages of 300 free texts and the sort, every month, as standard, O2 still operate on a "use £30" basis.
- kwomki, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Yeah a company with 18million customers (not including the 1.5million tesco mobile customers) really seems like a child's network
- birdieb23, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0they have to be unlockable at O2 has best network coverage in the UK and is the leading service.
dugg down for inaccuracy. - hiro, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2O2? Great, so now if I buy a shiny brick with no MMS, 3G or decent app support I also have to stand on the top of a building to get one bar of signal.
Thank goodness for Windows Mobile phones for showing how it should be done - idean360, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2iPhone in Canada, so close yet so far...
- dima1109, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Judging by the fact that every single iphone review expresses annoyance with molasses-slow edge, apple would have been much better off partnering with sprint in the US.
- birdieb23, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0you're an ass my friend
of course they would charge you for using WAP you arent a ***** charity -
