- jollyholly, on 10/10/2007, -17/+576>> When pressed during the Q&A about the striking similarity to the little Cupertino device, Anssi Vanjoki -- Nokia's Executive VP & General Manager of Multimedia -- said, "If there is something good in the world then we copy with pride."
The iPhone has totally changed the mobile phone market. At least this Nokia exec is not BSing anybody. - fernB, on 10/10/2007, -21/+392and nokia will be able to go with any carrier, so no iPhone hacking required
- Charlotte_Web, on 10/10/2007, -8/+222Yes, but does the Nokia phone play the skateboarding dog video?
It's an important question that I think we need answered. - decromin, on 10/10/2007, -1/+197I'm just surprised that anyone would find this a shock. If the market wants wide screen, touch based phones, Nokia would be mad to ignore it ...
Still, it'll be very interesting when it comes to market. - mobilehavoc, on 10/10/2007, -2/+187Competition is always a good thing. If nothing else, this will put more pressure on Apple to open up the iPhone for 3rd party apps or start adding some new features.
- greatblackowl, on 10/10/2007, -11/+142"Great artists do not copy. They steal."
Igor Stravinsky - DietMountainDew, on 10/10/2007, -14/+124But at least it may have 3G, GPS, MMS, IM, be Unlocked, should I keep going?
- gregorypierce, on 10/10/2007, -7/+115This is great news if only for the fact that it will allow software development by 3rd parties without fear of some software update breaking your system.
- EPH99, on 10/10/2007, -14/+106What's the price on that? Less than $599 you say? Looks like I just found a new phone.
- rick2k, on 10/10/2007, -25/+89If it has 3G then ***** the iphone!
I will buy the nok..iphone
bah i suck at puns! - jmhyer51, on 10/10/2007, -2/+63Carlos Mencia must be a fantastic artist.
- ckhw2, on 10/10/2007, -13/+73Are you kidding me? I'm pretty sure that this is what happened - Nokia came out with the "large touch screen design" long ago. Just Google: "nokia concept phone" to see what I'm talking about. The Apple iPhone was the first true realization of the concept. Nokia finally got the technology to implement that same thing and instead of saying - "We made the design even before Apple did"... which would be hard to prove anyway... they respectably said - "Yes, we stole the design... but it's a nice design innit?".
Nokia is twice as large as their closest competitor in the world (Motorola) and in my opinion - they come up with amazing designs... It really confuses me why they're doing so bad in the US... Customers without taste? - ismith, on 10/10/2007, -2/+56"Good artists copy, great artists steal" – Picasso, then Steve Jobs, then Fake Steve Jobs claiming Picasso copied him
- monkeyrun, on 10/10/2007, -3/+52Hardware similarity is hard to avoid, I mean it's a touch screen with some motion sensing ability bla bla bla...
but somehow they even made the demonstration so similar to an Apple iPhone ad.
Kinda shameless considering they are not even Chinese :P - allengeer, on 10/10/2007, -2/+45yea the one that resizes my browser window without my permission
http://www.pradaphonebylg.com/ - natedouglas, on 10/10/2007, -3/+43I wonder if he stole that from Oscar Wilde, and if Pablo Picasso stole it from him.
- Complexium, on 10/10/2007, -25/+62I'd so buy a Nokia before any iPhone.
- gib786, on 10/10/2007, -10/+47i like it. then again im a nokia fanboy. personally i think if it can improve on the iphone, (i.e. not being locked to a specific network, mms support, copy an paste, better camera, integrated gps) then it will sell. Just look at the N95, its selling like hotcakes over here in the UK simply because of the amount of features it has, plus the fact that networks offer it for around £50 on most £35 a month contracts
- DonCarcharo, on 10/10/2007, -7/+41This phone sucks. I mean no hardware keypad? Who wants that? And it's as ugly as sin. Oh wait, this isn't an Apple product? Ah, it's a Nokia. Well, in that case, this phone rocks! Who needs a keypad, right? And what a sexy design!!
- jcapogna, on 10/10/2007, -5/+37This is just like what happened with the Razr came out. Within a few months, there were multiple Razr-like phones on the market (eg. the Katana).
- TeCuervo, on 10/10/2007, -2/+32It's not an accelerometer, it's magic
- martyFREEDOM, on 10/10/2007, -50/+79I'd rather have that than the iPhone.
- offwithyourtv, on 10/10/2007, -21/+45Anyone remember the LG Prada phone? You know, the one that Apple borrowed the iPhone concept from?
- mtwolf, on 10/10/2007, -57/+81Apple did not invent the touchscreen. Nor did they invent the gyroscope.
I don't see what all the fuss is about. All Apple did was take existing technology and add a touch screen to it which then allows a display that covers the device. No one is accusing Apple of stealing from other companies who allow you to play music with your phone.
To be honest, the only thing revolutionary is the price tag. - dBLiSS, on 10/10/2007, -12/+35Oh, so they invented the accelerometer?
- etandrib, on 10/10/2007, -4/+27You saw them swipe a photo and you want it? You haven't even looked at the design, interface, specs, etc. Your opinion sucks.
- gravis86, on 10/10/2007, -14/+36Yeah, but Verizon sucks.
- Farmer77, on 10/10/2007, -4/+26Oh get over it. If no one copies anyone, you'll be living in a mud hut about now.
- KeithLM, on 10/10/2007, -2/+22Nokia hasn't made a significant effort in the US. Perhaps that's due to our poor cellular networks compared to other places. Or perhaps it has something to do with the way providers work with the phone manufacturers. Still, it's my understanding that they intend to focus more on the US market in the near future. I heard that the Nokia CEO said it was important to him.
- spazzcat, on 10/10/2007, -7/+26no their is "we take good ideas and make them bad"
- Technopope, on 10/10/2007, -0/+18This is like what happens when ANY successful product of ANY kind comes out. Ever. It can be a phone, a car, a video game, a clothing style or food. Nothing wrong with doing it.
- bat-21, on 10/10/2007, -0/+16If you use Firefox, this is how you keep those ***** from your window.
Tools > Options > Content > Enable Javascript > Advanced > Enable Javascript to: Move or resize existing windows > uncheck box - jwagsonnnn, on 10/10/2007, -1/+16i thought you were kidding... ***** that resizing thing i hate it.
- IHaveIssues, on 10/10/2007, -6/+20So *that's* how you pronounce it.....
- mastercheif, on 10/10/2007, -8/+22I'm sorry, I like actually having service to USE my phone.
- pixelbasic, on 10/10/2007, -1/+15"If there is something good in the world then we copy with a half-ass approach and a heavy dose of bulky security."
- rivalius13, on 10/10/2007, -1/+14Lets see them add 3G with a software patch. Silly rabbit.
- Drexus, on 10/10/2007, -8/+20I'm surprised at the buzz this is getting. I've seen better fake video then this. It's such a bad rendition that I have trouble believing so many have fallen for it. At the end of the video the blue screen is showing some sort of loading animation... but the blue screen is shaking around inside the "display area". There is a lot of unnatural disconnection between the "device" and what is shown on the "screen" that it comes out as a poor jiggly attempt. Have another look everyone.
- fuzzmeister, on 10/10/2007, -3/+15I'm not sure buying multi-hundred dollar phones based on a sub-1-minute YouTube video is the wisest thing.
- ckhw2, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13I can tell you're American... because apparently the US market is the only place Nokia is not doing so well... in the world market however, they're twice as big as the next competitor... Motorola
- PathDaemon, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13It's like an $6,000 TV that only took service from Comcast because it was the only carrier willing to implement special, $6,000-TV-specific functionality. It plays all the channels you want, just not from, say, Cox.
- aliguana, on 10/10/2007, -3/+14as long as you live in the US. To everyone else, the iPhone is just a video too
- adude, on 10/10/2007, -2/+13How can you say that? There are no absolutely no details about it.
- directive0, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12I think you're really attempting to make more of a lexical blend then a pun.
- jaisin, on 10/10/2007, -3/+14If the N800 is any example of how they do on touchsceen devices, then count me out. I had an N800 for two months and I sold it on eBay because it sucked. It was very buggy. The e-mail client didn't work, the RSS reader didn't work, and it was slow in general. The virtual keyboard was terrible compared to the iPhone keyboard. After the iPhone came out, I had no reason to keep it.
It was nice to install Pidgin on there, but it was hard to type and the battery was terrible compared to the iPhone. I wish them luck with this new device because I haven't enjoyed anything from them in a while. - saralk, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10Nokia phones in the past have been really hackable, especially their Symbian phones, which this one will definatly be.
- Terrk, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11So it's cool for apple to copy other people, but God forbid someone copy the "mighty apple."
I bet you think Apple Invented the MP3 player too? Huh? - rspeed, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10Not to mention Sprint (including Nextel, Virgin, Helio and Qwest), U.S. Cellular and Alltel?
- scoot2006, on 10/10/2007, -3/+13I think everyone will agree that the design/interface for the OS will be crappier than that of the iPhone, but will it allow third party apps out of the box? If it allows devs to take over and add/mod/***** up what they want, then I think Nokia will have a good contender.
Don't get me wrong, I love my iPhone.. but i want to be able to add and mod it without having to "jailbreak" and/or hack the ***** out of it. - yoda17, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11I bought a N770 (very cheap) a few months ago and it is my MOST used computer and is my primary phone @home. My (non-technical) friends just call it my iPhone.
It, with a $38 memory card, has a lot of music and videos, pictures etc. The VOIP (Gizmo) isn't the greatest, but isn't bad either and inexpensive. It also runs a ton of software and I have some pretty good games. It is the most fun that I've had with an electronic toy in many years.
Definitely the best $160 (with memory) that I have spent. -
