- aplusplus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+31Yeah, I was expecting some like $500 custom computers here... I mean, it is Wal-Mart.
- multifaceted, on 10/12/2007, -1/+31That would be kind of tricky considering the fact the man is dead.
- Matrixsjd, on 10/12/2007, -11/+39$900-1200 for a WalMart computer?? No thanks, think I'd rather get a Mac Mini, or iMac.....
- JRBobDobbs, on 10/12/2007, -1/+28I work in Electronics at a Wal-Mart in Washington State, and although me store won't be getting the DIY Modular I was given some information on it. Of course the "DIY Computer Modular" will not be a true DIY solution, instead it's based around a 1, 2, 3 type system. 1-Pick the tower (the cases displayed will be non-working demo units, the stickers with the specs will be swapped out occasionally, the towers more rarely). 2-Pick the monitor (they all will be LCDs). 3-Pick your accessories, this includes keyboard, mouse, speakers, web cam, etc. All the computer parts and accessories will be HP branded, but Wal-Mart will also be selling the standard prebundled systems from Emachine, Compaq, HP, etc. The system offers the buyer a bit more flexibility when buying the computer--but not much. They are undoubtedly doing the because they have a higher margin on accessories than the systems themselves and think they will sell more accessories this way. They are using non-working displays for the computer systems in order to reduce theft risk (they apparently don't know how muck a case runs, especially if you are 60+ miles from a real electronics store). The monitors however will be live products with a special display rack to secure them (I haven't seen the racks yet myself, but I've got the feeling that they, like most of Wal-Mart's security will fail).
- swiftness, on 10/12/2007, -4/+29CPU is a central processing unit. Not a computer.
- konspence, on 10/12/2007, -4/+25CPU != ComPUter,
CPU = Central processing unit
edit: oops, swiftness beat me - TheWookiee, on 10/12/2007, -3/+24Sam Walton would be turning in his grave if he knew half the things Wal~mart does/doesn't do.
- talam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20I used to work at walmart. It was amazing some of the things you would hear.
cpu = computer
modem = computer
disk drive = computer
computer = monitor
keyboard = computer
laser pointer = mouse
video card = monitor
The list goes on... - Hackintosh, on 10/12/2007, -8/+26Starting at $900?
Somebody send Sam Walton a *****-you-gram. - cyclotron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18Of course its for noobs. Walmart's business plan isn't to be computer specialty shop. They want to sell cheap units at the greatest quantities.
- heymark, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18"Swiftness" beat you. I had to laugh at that.
- imyourskribe, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17I'd have been pretty surprised if they went so far as to let you choose your video card, motherboard, etc. I think most shoppers would go "wah-- huh?" and then just repeatedly ask the person behind the counter "Which one is better? DUR HURR"
- kden, on 10/12/2007, -4/+19Average consumers might as well stick to dell...
- hazexp, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17I'm not surprised about this, I could hardly see the average Walmart shopper buying kitset computer....
- StealthTomato, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13You people fail to understand kiantech's humor.
He's using a "who's on first"-esque joke here.
"What's DIY mean?"
"Do it yourself."
"Why can't you just tell me?" - Cojawfee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13What do you expect? This guy works at Wal-Mart and goes by the name "SirPwn4g3."
- disrupter, on 10/12/2007, -11/+24Anyone considering buying a computer at Wal-Mart should be sent to Guantanamo.
- taotehue, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11I've had people call their systems hard drives before. It just drives me nuts.
- 1nc0gnito, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Does the top of his blog actually say "I pwn n00bs like it's going out of style!!!" ? I don't know about most people but if you have a myspace page....you dont pawn anyone.
- kiantech, on 10/12/2007, -12/+19Okay I'll look for it myself but seriously what does DIY mean.
- alceria, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Looking at his (lame) moblog, I'm a little disturbed by the fact that a 21 year old who refers to himself as sirpwn4g3 and prides himself on his career at wal-mart is breeding.
- cyclotron, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11This is why you cant believe every digg post - often they are wrong.
- joeysafe, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12CPU == Central processing unit
Gotta have both = signs. :P - rideagain, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9@raccettura:
This is a CPU: http://www.stud.uni-giessen.de/~st8632/ich/computer/cpu.html
Wal-Mart does not sell those separately. But real computer stores do, of course. - OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -14/+19
$900-1200 for a WalMart computer?? No thanks, think I'd rather get a Mac Mini, or iMac.....
Mac Mini? iMac? WalMart!? No thanks, I'd rather build it myself. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6"Believe it or not but the average person refers to the actual computer as a CPU."
That doesn't make them right - ThePotatoe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I expected nothing more from Wal-Mart
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4It wasn't on just digg. There were AP releases on this DIY service.
- perkelation, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"CPU == Central processing unit
Gotta have both = signs. :P"
Doesn't that mean "Does 'CPU' equal 'Central Processing Unit'"
I mean, you use the double equal signs to check if they're equal, not to set them equal... right? - lockle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I knew there was some kind of scam. It sounded too good to be true. Thanks for the info!
- Phatlip012, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I dont understand the big deal here, Walmart has always sold computers...
- OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6They should be sold to China to relieve some of our $2 trillion trade deficit.
- klacour, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4$900-1200 for what? Any Intel/AMD based PC, even at it's most basic configuration, can be had for less at a variety of outlets. Costco sells very usable eMachines at $400; and Fry's sells one for $159 (running Linux), sans monitor!
Come to think of it, does Wal-Mart sell ANYTHING over $1000? If I have $1000 to spend on a PC, I ain't going to Wal-Mart; if I was going to Wal-Mart to buy a PC, I ain't spending $1000 ... - tylerni7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"Hmmm well I could buy this 512 RAM thing for $150 or a 500 Hard Drive thing for $300. Psh, I'll just get the 512, it's a bigger number and a lower price!" - (What would happen if Walmart shoppers built their own computers)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Why is he being modded down? Thanks for the info. Now I have another reason not to go to Walmart while living in a major urban area.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+11@TiCL
You sir, are an ass. - brandizzle, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Yes...all kinds of people shop there. In fact I often shop there...I buy things like shampoo, paper towels, bananas, chocolate, cake mixes and such from there.
Would I ever buy a computer from there?
Noooo. See...that's a BAD idea. Walmart IS geared towards the people that would sit there completely confused when a person brought up motherboards. - Nougat, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9Yeah, the least you could do is give a link, ass:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=define%3Adiy&btnG=Google+Search - sirpwn4g3, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I guess I'll join the last poster in jumping off topic... but I was fired? How was I fired? I work for Wal-Mart, I hate working for Wal-Mart. The modular is not complete, I put up information as soon as I get it.
- aplusbi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I think the real question is not whether you can buy computer parts, but whether you can "build your own computer" in-store. Which you can't.
- Criterion, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6Guess what? The main computers that Walmart will be selling are HP's. Who's the idiot now, huh?
- meshgiath, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Wal-Mart Inc. has no plans to hire anyone that knows this line of products well enough to ensure customers are well informed. WMI also has no intentions to train any of the current staff because they would lose money in the long run."
Wal Mart contunies to make me sick. Old man walton was 'bout the customer service early on, looks like the money got to his head. I actually have started avoiding Wal Mart 100%. I have been once this year and hope to never set foot in there again. It's like going to the red light district.... with no girls. They'll do anything for that dolla dolla bill y'all. - Nyghtewynd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If you hate working for Wal-Mart, why should you be believed? So you publish stuff like this and then cash the paycheck? Enjoy unemployment.
- Antz0rz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3ThePotatoe is right. Its walmart, what WERE you expecting? A good service?
I expect the worst from every business on this planet. Sometimes I'm wrong, which is nice, but most of the time I'm right. - jejones, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The deal is that if they're really going to allow a DIY or even a "pick one from columns A, B, C...", then a lot of people, including some out in the boonies who can't just walk down the block to a Fry's or CompUSA, will have a capability that they'd otherwise have to shop online for. I really hope it's true, and especially hope that among the choices one will have is choice of OS (something meaningful, rather than the equivalent of "We have both kinds o' music here: country AND western" that one typically sees, where the vendor lets you choose XP Home or XP Professional).
- Takteek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ugh, that made me so mad in elementary school when they were first teaching us about computers. One of the things on the test was "What is the name of the box under the screen that has the power button on it?"
They made us answer CPU to get it right, and the teacher wouldn't listen when I told her otherwise. - Surreal, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Why are we still linking to blogs that give half of the information?
- addakorn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Come to think of it, does Wal-Mart sell ANYTHING over $1000?"
A few televisions, and certain sets of tires. -
