- number9ine, on 10/17/2007, -0/+43i wonder if you can replace the graphic of your vehicle with a sweet picture. i'm thinking a triceratops.
- Error601, on 10/14/2007, -0/+33Hey, that was my idea! Except it used a remote control helicopter so probably wasn't as practical.
- cbdgr, on 10/14/2007, -0/+25nooo! now we wont have any more vids of people trying to parallel park for 5 min
- facelesscoward, on 10/14/2007, -1/+20I was hoping for some sort of crazy panorama thing. Still, pretty cool.
- SkippyDoorknob, on 10/14/2007, -0/+18Now superimpose that synthesized image on top of Google Maps satellite view.
- inactive, on 10/14/2007, -3/+20woman engineer idea?
- Namakemono, on 10/14/2007, -0/+15Maybe if the cameras recorded, you could get the license plate of that phucker that hit you in the parking lot and didn't leave a note.
- Senn, on 10/13/2007, -1/+16Please enlighten me as to what the frak you're on about.
- bbtrev, on 10/14/2007, -0/+12Is it too much to ask people to actually learn to drive?
- dtd00d, on 10/15/2007, -3/+15Don't worry, women will still try.
- sega01, on 10/14/2007, -4/+12This sounds lame. Sure parking can be hard at times, but a good driver doesn't need this. I feel it would just add to confusion. What I would like, is a good sized rear window to use for reversing.
- Lane, on 10/13/2007, -1/+8when i can get a 3rd person view of my amazing driving skills then ill pay for cameras on my car.
- funktimus, on 10/15/2007, -1/+8Your suggestion doesn't earn the parts and service department a good amount of money. Cars of the future will no longer have practical windows. It'll just be several very expensive cameras that mimic the effect of windows.
- bluechips23, on 10/13/2007, -1/+6I wonder how the cameras will work during foggy conditions where the lenses are just fogged up. Or may be during night time.
- Urusai, on 10/13/2007, -1/+6"a good driver"
Yeah, I see a lot of those on the road. - praveens, on 10/13/2007, -1/+6parallel parking made easy
- Lick, on 10/15/2007, -1/+6It's designed for women. Obviously.
- Matt174e, on 10/13/2007, -0/+5The video was bs
I want to see the lcd screen "mirror" in action. - bethlagarrison, on 10/15/2007, -1/+5Best comment this week.
- verifex, on 10/13/2007, -0/+4While that is cool, it's too bad that they can't use some kind of field of view distorted lens to allow them a much larger viewing radius.
- superkendall, on 10/14/2007, -1/+4Kind of neat, but I was more hoping for a system that would help remove blind spots while driving rather than another assistant for people who cannot parallel park or take time to learn how big the car they are driving is...
- MonarchWastxD, on 10/13/2007, -2/+5That comment... was totally, and utterly worthless.
- notthemama, on 10/13/2007, -1/+3Your reply reminds me of working with certain other programmers that think user don't need all dem fancy reports, since they can go in to the mainframe and just do a simply comand to view counts.
- moskaudancer, on 10/13/2007, -0/+2No way, Stegosaurus all the way. They have deadly tails, that, when wagged, can shish-kabob several grown men.
- zestyhedgehog, on 10/13/2007, -0/+2Yesterday I had a chance to drive an EX35 and use the system described in the article. While all around look (the one from the top) looks cool, it is very uncomfortable to use. I switched to rear view camera, and at least it was more convenient - you are able to see the real-life picture of where exactly the car is moving to compared to a weird and unusual graph. But nevertheless, turning a head around and park by yourself without using a fancy system still works better.
- wstrucke, on 10/13/2007, -1/+3vid or it ...
can i just get a link? - LiquidFusion, on 10/13/2007, -0/+2It does in jersey.
- r69er87, on 10/13/2007, -0/+2amen
- r69er87, on 10/13/2007, -0/+2why is he being dugg down? its true!
- xister, on 10/13/2007, -0/+2I don't know, I kinda thought it was going to be a monitor in the shape of a tube that you can look at 360 degrees.
- banter, on 10/13/2007, -0/+2Police chase videos just got 100% cooler.
- HappyScrappy, on 10/13/2007, -0/+1The EX35 system completely fails to produce an accurate-looking top-down view. As mentioned by zestyhedgehog below, it produces an ugly, distorted image that isn't terribly usable.
This one looks a lot better, but I dunno if believe it. Has to be rigged. - Arramol, on 10/13/2007, -0/+1I think most Americans have a very low opinion of American competence in this particular field.
- qwertydvorak, on 10/13/2007, -0/+1mine was gonna use a giant cb antenna in the middle of the roof. i was just gonna mount the camera on top.
really though, do we need this ? nothing beats actually having some skill with the vehicle you drive. - xister, on 10/13/2007, -0/+1I bought a brand new car 3 years ago and it took me no time at all to figure out that I had to stop parking anywhere that a car could park in front of it because idiots with SUVs would back into it while parallel parking. It's also been hit twice on either side by larger vehicles in that time. Many people out there are driving oversize vehicles that they can't judge well or handle correctly. They need help whether they think they do or not.
- omnisync, on 10/13/2007, -3/+4I logged in to burry you.
- bob7, on 10/13/2007, -0/+1They could already pass it. It doesn't include parallel parking.
- gadgetboy32, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow! Now everyone can pass their driver's exam at the DMV!
- xister, on 10/13/2007, -0/+1Obviously you've never been in a car when a woman is trying to parallel park...
- philthetechie, on 10/13/2007, -0/+1Nissan... helping women drive since 1932
- rebotfc, on 10/13/2007, -0/+1Does this mean I can now drive like in GTA?
Now where were those Harri Krisnas.. - gadgetlust, on 10/14/2007, -0/+1If you've ever seen the size of parking spaces at people's homes in Tokyo, this starts to make a lot more sense.
- kd1s, on 10/13/2007, -0/+1I'm waiting for the car without a driver. You know it's coming right? If it can see in the perimeter around the car, it could also see beyond that.
I'm also hoping I can get to see the DARPA Grand Challenge in November. That should be interesting and I want to talk to some of the teams to get a feel for the projects. - inactive, on 08/11/2008, -0/+1So, they mounted a camera on a car. Big deal.
- greenmountain, on 10/13/2007, -0/+1Solution in search of a problem.
- WiseWeasel, on 10/13/2007, -0/+1I'm talking about the submitter spamming hundreds of random people's shouts to get them to digg his story. These guys add hundreds people to their friends list, and then mass-shout their stories to try to get them to the front page and drive traffic to their site. I've launched a personal jihad on shout spammers, and together, we can all put an end to the practice, with a simple toggle of the 'bury -> spam' button...
- GeckoSlayer, on 10/13/2007, -0/+1And in all states of Australia!
(yet parallel parking is so easy, why bother cheating?) - diggimator, on 10/13/2007, -0/+1I've seen a similar luddite post on digg before! Last time someone was complaining about iPod's cover flow navigation being too difficult for practical use. The solution to this and similar problems is an amazing technique called Don't Use It.
The use of multiple cameras is such an obvious and trivial idea that I am certain there are bajillion patents covering it. It was more about market prices of hardwares coming down low enough to reasonable levels rather than due to terribly insightful ideas. If cameras are cheap enough to be embedded in your laptops, cellphones, and lavatories, it seems reasonable that something worth tens of thousands of $$ could have it. - MonarchWastxD, on 10/13/2007, -0/+1*Gasp* My Jaguar!
- scojerroc, on 10/13/2007, -0/+1yes, you do. but you don't notice them - that's the point.
