- LANjackal, on 05/25/2009, -4/+44Unlikely. Because of its specialized nature, Ning will never have the broad appeal of Facebook or even MySpace. It's a LOT easier to set up a group on Facebook for your enthusiast club, for example, because most likely your friends are already Facebook members anyway.
- ehaugan, on 05/26/2009, -0/+28Yes, its called Digg.com
- jsmith212600, on 05/26/2009, -1/+27I can't WAIT to create another profile of myself. Now I'll have eleventeen sites to log in and check everyday. Gotta catch 'em all!
- itsmikey, on 05/26/2009, -2/+28I don't have any hobbies, but I am a full time stoner. Is there a Ning for me??
- jsmith212600, on 05/26/2009, -0/+26I believe they have a social network that caters to every niche. It's called the Internet.
- inactive, on 05/26/2009, -1/+26*****' thing sucks!
- MikeDugg, on 05/26/2009, -0/+25Ah, the last thing the internet needs: another BS social networking site.
- inactive, on 05/26/2009, -0/+12Ning has been around longer than ***** twitter.
- morningmatters, on 05/26/2009, -0/+12Okay, I've tried the whole facebook and myspace thing. I got in touch with high school "friends" who I did not talk to for ages, I checked out the pictures of co-workers and friend's families, I acquired hundreds of "online friends", I received and sent requests for games and causes on a daily basis. But enough is enough. The whole social networking thing is just a waste of time. At least on digg you can read interesting articles.

I think I'm learning Japanese
I really think so
It's a New Clear Day! - inactive, on 05/26/2009, -1/+10ning is horrible.
- inactive, on 05/26/2009, -1/+10Ning is much better than facebook from groups and stuff.
I'm learning japanese and it's helped a fair bit.
Ning: For your hobbies and interests with people who actually care about them
Myspace: for music (once upon a time) too ugly to use really.
Bebo: For a profile that "reflects" you espcially if irish :) Its the inbetween of facebook and myspce.
Facebook: profiles are dull, but the life stream is all you need. It's an intersting and interactive twitter with content supplied only by people who actually like and not moronic celebs. - Cowboy1015, on 05/26/2009, -2/+11is there a porn network?
- PhilMoskowitz, on 05/26/2009, -1/+9Well, some stupid named copycat program has to be the future, doesn't it?
Plood, Smitter, Quul, Fabildo.. just fire up visual basic and make the Next Big Thing.
jesus. - zimsters, on 05/26/2009, -1/+8No.
- franklymister, on 05/26/2009, -0/+7Ideas aren't worth anything if you don't execute on them.
- LonelyTylenoL, on 05/26/2009, -1/+7When you can't find a page for your hobbies, you know you've gone wrong somewhere in the choices you have made over your life.
- lpcustom, on 05/26/2009, -2/+8WOW I'm excited about this. I can't wait to create my multiple fake accounts to spam people. Is that the purpose of social networks?
- mostmef06, on 05/26/2009, -2/+8Yeah there's no way this will happen with the scale that facebook has already achieved. It's like trying to conquer search over google, as a startup, after they had already overtaken yahoo and redefined what search means.
- inactive, on 05/26/2009, -0/+6Yep. It's called the internet.
- bradleyland, on 05/26/2009, -0/+6Everybody who uses software thinks they know how to build software. It's one of the most frustrating aspects of software development. All these build-your-own social network products will fail, because people underestimate the time and effort required to draw in users when they already have a tool they like.
- savocado, on 05/26/2009, -1/+6NSFW
- malcolmlo, on 05/26/2009, -2/+7Anyone else think she has those doughy, "i want to make sexy time with you" eyes?
- my10cent, on 05/26/2009, -0/+5Make your own :) together with all your imaginary friends when your high you will be the biggest site on Ning.
- meruru, on 05/26/2009, -0/+5Like you said, google overtook yahoo. Just because something is huge does not mean it can't be surpassed. Look at MySpace or GM as two (very different) examples.
- RudeTurnip, on 05/26/2009, -1/+6Everyone is trying to create their own little, lock-in AOL. How quickly they forget!
- diggerpleez, on 05/26/2009, -0/+5did anyone it wasn't?
- diggerpleez, on 05/26/2009, -0/+5crap, someone stole a word from that sentence.
- Charlotte_Web, on 05/26/2009, -1/+6The premise of Ning is brilliant; anyone can set up their own social networking app. Businesses are using it to directly and indirectly build a marketing base -- a local web developer has set one up for the town he's in, and of course, an ad for his company is on every page.
It wouldn't surprise me to see Ning get bought out by Google so they can integrate AdSense on it.
It's not likely to topple MySpace or Facebook, but it doesn't have to. It's a boutique social networking site, and in that regards, it works pretty damn well. - OdinsFury, on 05/26/2009, -0/+4Gina looked better from far away.
- marciot, on 05/26/2009, -0/+4You mean like "www.meetup.com," but without, you know, actual social interaction with real people?
- inquebiss, on 05/26/2009, -0/+4you're happy with myspace?
- LonelyTylenoL, on 05/26/2009, -1/+4Yeah....ummm.....some this stuff should be censored........
There was a guy who's profile picture was him holding his penis.... - Pushkin, on 05/26/2009, -0/+3You mean
I'm learning Japanese
I think I'm learning Japanese
I really think so - aliguana, on 05/26/2009, -2/+5the ability to set up a networking site is briliant. The lock-in to Ning gives you an audience of about 10. Seriously, why not have Facebook Connect or Google Connect or OpenID sign-in.
What we need is an open-source Ning (a-la wordpress/Joomla etc) - download and install - that supports different login options. That would be the future of social networking. The days of setting up a different account for every bloody site are over. Why set up ANOTHER account? i've got too many already. Everyone has a Facebook account. Or Twitter account. Or Google Account. Or Myspace Account. Or Bebo account (etc). We need to connect the dots, not start making new dots. - jfitz369, on 05/26/2009, -0/+3Ning was news like 3 years ago. It's cool but newsworthy in 2009, hardly.
- dingedarmor, on 05/26/2009, -0/+3Hah, sounds like the old yahell groups....
:D - Stettenbauer, on 05/26/2009, -1/+4She is hot!
- Charlotte_Web, on 05/26/2009, -0/+3Nosexnodrugsnowinenowomennofunnosinnoyounowonderit'sdark...
- Greengoo, on 05/26/2009, -0/+3Try doing it live...?
- oscarolim, on 05/26/2009, -0/+3Thats really a great ideia... oh wait, are you talking about OpenID?
- chipxsd, on 05/26/2009, -0/+2yeah, Ming
- shalinshaun, on 05/26/2009, -1/+3"There is another one for cricket, specifically Indian cricket, which has added half a million people in the last two and a half weeks"
I've found it its IPL twenty20 official cricket community
http://iplnation.ning.com/
and they run that on NING! - drunkenoaf, on 05/26/2009, -1/+3A science communication charity I help out with has a Ning site.
I find it less than useful -- it does nothing for me that Facebook can't; it is another site for me to look at regularly; it has a vastly smaller audience. In fact, it pisses me off that "we" didn't just use Facebook and be done with it. - cplusplus, on 05/26/2009, -0/+2RSS feed?
- allfatherblack, on 05/26/2009, -0/+2Agreed. Social networking sites have their use, but the vast vast majority of people simply use 'em to make themselves feel popular or wanted in some way. The connections you develop on these networks are weak and pointless until you spend years talking to the people, at which point, you should have met them in real life.
- merelogic, on 05/26/2009, -2/+4What! is Ning paying you guys!! It's not that cool... infact far from it.
- LOGNATR, on 05/26/2009, -0/+2Can we wait a couple months for Twitter to die please?
- sgxyay, on 05/26/2009, -0/+2Ok. I've now canceled my plans for a new social networking site as per your request.
