- trees420, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4face it scoble, your just not 1337 as fUX0r to call yourself a geek like the rest of these commenters...
- CypherXero, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Robert Scoble is fake, and I'm serious about this. He talks way too much about technologies that are here today, gone tomorrow. He spends his time and energy talking about Web 2.0, startups, and other fads. He calls himself a geek, yet time and time again he proves he's not a geek at all.
I stopped reading his blog after figuring out he's a fraud. He's trying to pass himself off as something he's not.
Scoble, you are no computer geek. - SlashChick, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5CypherXero says: "Real computer geeks don't spend much time, if any, talking about AJAX, Web 2.0, Wikis, or RSS feeds."
Oh, please. Give me a break and get out of the 80s. There are "real" computer geeks in the web industry as well... out there doing "real" coding and talking about the technologies behind the web. There is no standard definition for "geek." Lighten up a little -- and if you don't like what Scoble's doing, why not go out there and do a "geekier" show yourself? - crpietschmann, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3What really is a computer geek anyway? There are plenty of people today who are considered normal but they would have been considered computer geeks 10-15 years ago.
- wisewaif, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Do we really need another tech podcast? I feel swamped as it is. It would be cool of some of these people could branch out into other areas. I think most of us already have a certain number of tech podcasts that we listen to, and there isn't much room for anymore.
And are we really better served by watching interviews of tech people in a short time span anyway. It seems that IT Conversations has a better track for in-depth tech stuff. Getting to see the desk of the founder of Flock really doesn't interest me. I'd rather just hear his ideas.
Plus, was that Microsoft thing he did that crappy vlog with the two annoying G4 girls? I still haven't washed the memory of that out of my head. - CypherXero, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Wow, you can drop names, Scoble. Congrats.
And no, I don't do a show interviewing geeks. I do have a small little underground video series known as securityinsecurity, where I demonstrate fingerprinting Operating Systems based on their TCP signature, application discovery based on open ports, vulnerability scanning, compiling and launching exploits, and so on.
I'm currently reading about the TCP/IP network stack, and I'm learning some C code, and other tech things. The point is, Scoble, is that a true computer geek doesn't go around and do the things you do. I'm not saying I'm special with what I know. I am saying that you're misrepresenting the computer geeks out there.
Use your power for good and talk about REAL issues. - scobleizer, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5Wisewaif: I never worked with the two girls. That was a different project from my Channel 9.
CypherXero: I didn't realize Sun Microsystems was a Web 2.0 company. I didn't realize that Printing for Less was a Web 2.0 company. I didn't realize that SmugMug was a Web 2.0 company.
As for being a geek or not. You define geek as "coder." I definitely am NOT a coder. But, then, I don't see you doing a show and interviewing geeks about what they are doing.
Tankko: >Won't he just go away.
Heheh. You don't need to subscribe, or even read anything about me. The fact that you clicked on this Digg, though, just to abuse me tells me a lot more about you than I really want to know. - CypherXero, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4If you think attending conferences makes you a geek...damn you're pathetic.
- camix, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Well, I get that impression too, but the interviews he's done on his show have been all pretty interesting. It gave me something to watch on my lunch break at work today :-p I thought the interview with the Sun CEO was pretty interesting. Not nearly as fun or interesting as a Diggnation episode but still entertaining. I'm all about the online tech shows since you can't seem to get any via TV anymore.
- thomashawk, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6In my segment with Robert I'm shooting with my 5D. That's the camera that PriceRitePhoto tried to rip me off on. Just a little digg trivia.
- scobleizer, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4>I'm not saying I'm special with what I know. I am saying that you're misrepresenting the computer geeks out there.
Why, do you think computer geeks need to be elitist asshats like you? Now that's a real issue there.
Maybe you should listen to a few segments on my show. It's pretty obvious you haven't. - hedde, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Rock on Scoble. I think you are a geek. Hell I know you are a geek. Why?
Because my definition of geek is someone who is truly passionate and spends his/her time doing things he/she love!
So the questions you must ask yourself is:
Am I passionate about what I do? Do I spend way to much time on doing things I love?
Yes?
Well, then, in my eyes, you are truly a geek.
Rock on Scoble!
Cause I keep watching!

Help me sell 1000 t-shirt so that I get to make my next movie over at http://www.andrehedetoft.com - CypherXero, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Just like the poster above me said, you're a geek to the business suits. You're not a geek for the sake of being a geek. You're only in it for the "new hot trends". I look at how I keep evolving and learning, and then I go read your blog, and it's the same crap over and over.
Real computer geeks don't spend much time, if any, talking about AJAX, Web 2.0, Wikis, or RSS feeds. We spend our time doing things like coding in C, writing scripts to automate important processes, learning protocols, reading RFC documents, looking at code, testing systems for exploits, patching security vulnerabilities.
You know, REAL issues that matter to REAL people. AJAX doesn't mean anything to me. Neither does Web 2.0 or any of that BS. Real geeks don't have agendas. We do the things we do because we LOVE it, not because there's a business opportunity with it. That just happens to be a side-effect of the topics and issues we study. - the_d, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@ scoble
CypherXero doesn't think all geeks are "coders."
He isn't even a coder. I know he likes to think of himself as one, but in reality he isn't.
I'm pretty sure he thinks the only geeks are "hackers."
The only reason I'm writing this, is because he is giving the coders of the world a bad name. (and to some degree, so are you) - CypherXero, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Another comment: Video blogging is bad. Bad because I can't do anything with it, even if I wanted to. It's bad because you can't grep through video, you can't parse video using any normal data tools like sed or awk, and it's just a bad idea.
You better hope that you have your information as text, because no one knows what the world is going to be like tomorrow. Text is the only way to go for archiving information. - hchaudh1, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2I thought this was just some random guy using scobleizer as his handle here. But that annoying "Heheh" confirmed its you.
Don't justify your "geek" moniker to anyone. You are not a geek. I am not sure whether any self respecting geek would even call him/herself a geek. You are a geek to business suits who think Web 2.0 is the latest "trend" and where the money is.
Face it, as on the website by the same name, you are just a "Bastard of the blogs". - NickDouglas, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Dude, Scoble, that tit-for-tat reply was beneath you.
- hchaudh1, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2I would tend to think why pay any attention to a MS has-been. Let's face it, the only reason he had anything interesting to say was because of his close access to MS employees.
That combined with the fact that he, alongwith his mentor specifically went after sites that posted breaking MS news and hardware pics, but left sites like EndGadget alone(which is who his previous mentor worked for), that's not transparency like he pouts so oftten, its just plain old bullying.
http://msmobiles.com/news.php/3540.html That's NOT my blog or something I am promoting, just an article. - crpietschmann, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3well put, Scoble.
I'm guessing these haters are just jealous anyway. - SmilyHeKtor, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0To all the people that dont think that web 2.0 can be geeky, go back to working on your high tech mainframes.
- tankko, on 10/12/2007, -7/+4Oh dear god. I am so sick of Robert Scoble and his A-list circle jerk of self-important bloggers. Won't he just go away. Hey Robert: No one gives a sh*t now that you're not at MS except your cross-linking friends.
- scobleizer, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2>We do the things we do because we LOVE it, not because there's a business opportunity with it.
Until your mom kicks you out of the house. Heheh.
>You are a geek to business suits who think Web 2.0 is the latest "trend" and where the money is.
Funny, I write about Web 2.0 a lot less than a lot of geeks. Including "real" ones.
But I'm sitting in Intel's Developer Forum right now. What session? The one on HD-DVD. - ccmehil, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2I would say it's more Videoblogging taken to the next level as opposed to just "video blogging", some fantastic material and a definite "subscriber"!
- lazycoder, on 10/12/2007, -8/+4He submitted his own website for a story. Spam.
- bbebop, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0fwiw, i found the printing for less video pretty fascinating, especially as a past and future customer. nice to see the people behind the website and service.
you know, there's an awful lot of content available on the internet, way too much for any one person. the basic idea, for me, is to take advantage of what i find interesting and useful, and to leave the rest alone.
