- jfair, on 10/12/2007, -0/+37Looks cool, but I'm not sure how useful it'll be.
- SimpleMan46, on 10/12/2007, -3/+28"Now please don't mod me down... I love google's tools!"
I actually dugg your comment, but I think you're being overly paranoid. Maybe if instead of Google you were talking about "Joe's Corner Website" I would be cautious about giving personal info. But Google is a public company that has MUCH to lose if they abuse the information they have.
And honestly, there's nothing in my email, calendar, blog, etc, that I care if others have access to. If I want to keep something private I don't put it online. - TenebrousX, on 10/12/2007, -5/+24wtf are you talking about?!
- SimpleMan46, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17"Gotta agree. I had to turn off scripting for Gmail when they started integrating the Gtalk (or whatever the chat client is) into the web client for mail. "
You realize you can turn off the chat panel? Just click 'standard without chat' at the bottom of gmail. - LabattsBlue, on 10/12/2007, -20/+34Now please don't mod me down... I love google's tools!
But I stop short of using anything Google related where there is anything personal about me eg: email, photos, connections with other friends/family etc. is involved.
Frankly, Google scares the hell out of me when it comes how much information they can put together on users of their services and of course that has a tremendous potential for abuse.
Think about it... sure, they don't know how much you have in the bank - but, if you use google's email, contacts, calendar, blog, classifieds, and pictures they know more personal information about you than your banker ever will!! - jarcoal, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14labattsblue:
everything you said applies to ALL web based services. - Sheco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Because they're still adding features? (still in development)
Because it hasn't reached a feature freeze. (aproaching a "stable release") - Saintlink, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12I agree. I'd wish they would spend more time bumping up options that are still available only in MS Office and other clients. This is cute, but is it needed?
- SimpleMan46, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Your comments are getting buried because you're insulting people. Try acting a little civilized, it will get you places.
- dexim, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Maybe you should read a little more than just the headline.
From Google's site; "We're in the process of rolling this feature out to all users, so keep an eye out for it in your account!" - MrSpontaneous, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Haha, no. Just so happened that its my brother's birthday. I called him to gloat (gmail was the /it/ thing back then), and realized in the middle of my gloating that it was his birthday. I ended up giving him one of my two invites.
- tapo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7If you're really that strongly against using Gmail Chat, then click the 'Standard without Chat' link at the bottom of the page, and it'll disable it as long as the cookie remains on your system.
- moiety, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5> Sheco, features are NOT supposed to be added in BETA stage. They are supposed to be finished by Alpha at the latest. Calling Gmail BETA is some kind of insider joke, or maybe a legal thing, or possibly just marketing.
I'm sorry, and what Developer's Bible did you read this little bit of scripture from? Beta's are often treated as "in development, but relatively stable" builds of software anymore. Virtually every MMO out there is also treated in this manner. - mediaphile, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4works for me, but the upload is slow, and i can't resize the window that pops up asking me to crop the picture, and there's no scrollbar, so it makes it kinda hard to see the whole picture. but at least now i can add avatars to the friends that are too lazy to do it themselves. it even asks if you'd like to suggest that pic to the person you're adding it to, or if you'd just like to keep it for yourself. pretty sweet.
- q3ctf4, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4IvanB, Google can't guarantee it 100% and if something ***** up they can always claim it was beta. There is some marketing behind it as well for Wall Street, it shows the company is still young and growing.
- MrSpontaneous, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4As I've learned in the past, many google features appear useless, but then they roll out something that ties a bunch of these loose ends together in such a way that it makes perfect sense.
Because of that, I'll withold judgement.
(today my gmail account is exactly 2 years old!) - sclozza, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3IMAP please!
- ebs16, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4this feature is available on some gmail accounts - mine included - and is being rolled out to all of gmail in the coming weeks. if you receive an email from a person with their own picture or with a picture that you assign to them, the picture shows up when you hover over their name in your inbox. i'm a fan of google's products as they tend to be very innovative, but are they running out of ideas? this feature is completely pointless - this is email, not myspace.
- moiety, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@rasterbator: Congratulations on making the most ignorant comment I've read this week.
- SimpleMan46, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Why does this new feature bother you so much? For me, Gmail still loads faster than other webmail services. If you don't like "bloat" features, disable them.
- shinynew, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3to me this screams "meh"
- mdmoya, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@ VorpalK
There is a section at the bottom of the Gmail screen that says "Gmail view" and you can set it to not have chat active. You can even go as far as to click on "basic HTML" and it won't run all the scripts behind the scenes. Some of us like the features that Google adds to their amazing e-mail service, but they do offer the option to disable those features if you don't like them. - robwistar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@Simpleman: "But Google is a public company that has MUCH to lose if they abuse the information they have. "
Like AT&T? - ronmcmahon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2For those who are worried that Google is collecting too much personal information - you have nothing to worry about. Since it has been revealed that Google is a commercial arm of the NSA, you can rest assured that your personal information has been carefully collected, collated, 'trolled' and verified for inaccuracies. Your trust in the security of your personal information should be bolstered by the fact that all of your sensitive information is housed in one of America's most secure and secret data centres. This data centre houses the most sophisticated collection of data extraction and mining systems on the planet; ensuring that your data can be safely retrieved from even the most robust encryption in a reliable, timely manner.
Watch for Google Verify™ this fall - an exciting new service that the NSA, er Google will offer to the global Internet. This service will enable the automatic verification of any personal information including; phone records, medical and employment history, education records and banking transaction patterns (individual transactions will not be visible due to 'privacy concerns'). An SDK will also be available next month to select 'partners' to help them enhance and extend the collection of additional information, providing a simple way to commercialize this beneficial technology. A ‘general use’ API is also under development and will likely be in a beta release by the end of May. For further information on the SDK or API, you can email Google’s BB Project contact, Wilson Smith at: WilsonSmith at google dot com.
If you want to look up more information on Google Verify™, do a search on the term "Google Big Brother Project" ('Big Brother' is the internal code name of Google Verify™). Unfortunately, it seems that the Google cache and search results on this project have been removed in the last 24 hours. But I think that Yahoo! still has most of the information online. - IvanB, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6I like the "ping" feature about the google chat integrated in GMail. Not too sure about the picture feature though, I hope we can disable it somehow.
Also, why is GMail still in BETA stage? - Sheco, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4@VorkpalK:
While I agree that it's not always needed to sign into google talk while checking my email, I find it quite usesful when I travel, currently google talk is not popular (at least in my country, everybody uses MSN messenger (and live messenger is already implementing the nice features google talk has, so I don't see anybody switching to google tried, I even tried)) and I can always sign in easily anywhere I go without bothering to install a (currently) featureless client, I hope that changes, cause I like google talk and I think it can be a great instant messenger, if they stay away from ajax and stick to the full fledged application. - tapo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Haha, nice save.
- whalesalad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I've got the picture feature on my Gmail Hosted account. =]
- moiety, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2> this is email, not myspace.
The question is, is that destinction really valid anymore? Social networks are about finding commonalities between individuals, points of interest, and forming communities based around there. Friends of friends, people who like x and hate y, and so on and so forth. Google clearly has the system in place to intelligently parse email; would it be so hard to imagine taking that next big step and forming personalized social networks based around that? - alphageek101, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It will show up on everybody's accounts soon. Be patient. This is what happens everytime GMail gets a new feature.
- stuartr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3If you're using Google Talk, it looks like it will pick up your chat Avatar to use in Gmail.
- opita, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Don't really agree with you.
I'm going to say 25% percent of my contact list has people I verily know or just met.
Friends of friends or business/social partners.
It is extremely useful for me to be able to put a picture to a name or in this case email and name.
Just because you don't see a use for it doesn't mean it's not useful.
You have to think more openly and stop being selfish. - volcompimp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Very cool but I was hoping for a photo storage add on for gmail which would allow you to easilly attatch photos from your gmail gallery.
- Macintosh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Maybe a better feature would be actually getting Talk intergration for Safari users...
- moiety, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3> Yes, in development. But feature complete. Beta's are a time to get rid of bugs and to stabilise the project, not to add features.
I'm fairly certain I just said that betas are often treated otherwise these days. Many companys use the term beta for builds of feature close, but not complete, software. You are correct that, traditionally, beta's would be treated as feature complete builds. But that's not always the case anymore. - Elohir, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1>Now please don't mod me down... I love google's tools!...
I think you're leaning towards a little paranoia but I've considered it myself. If they provided all of these services with full encryption and anonymity I'd actually be a huge fan. - bazac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Looks suspiciously like bloatware to me... I don't find it too difficult to use those awkward name things to see who's sending me messages.
- buxx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1In Apple mail and iChat and Adressbook this optios is allready a few years and it works great. A picture says more than a 1000 words...
- zezak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"It lets users choose avatars for their email conversations with people, almost like avatars in instant messengers."
Or almost like Apple Mail, which already does this through Address Book integration. - tijer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22.7 GB of IMAP? Would make more problems than it would solve.
- l0ne, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have it on my account. Cool, it picked up my iChat/Google Talk avatar automatically!
- Agret, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"After a couple of browser crashes that I discovered were due to a friend trying to chat-page me... off goes the scripting for Google."
Don't you love IE/Opera?
"I go without bothering to install a (currently) featureless client, I hope that changes, cause I like google talk and I think it can be a great instant messenger, if they stay away from ajax and stick to the full fledged application."
Uhh Google talk has IM & Voice, how is that featureless? it's a chat program... It does it's job and it looks damn sexy and it's without all the stupid bloat MSN, Yahoo & AIM have.
"stay away from ajax and stick to the full fledged application."
I think it's cool you can chat from your e-mail. They should definately keep that. Why should they get rid of it? And the full fledged application is good too. You can use any client to chat on it :D Love Jabber.... - Agret, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"I'd wish they would spend more time bumping up options that are still available only in MS Office and other clients. This is cute, but is it needed?"
What these options you speak of? It's not needed but it prob only took someone 5 mins to implement it. - brownspank, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Looks suspiciously like bloatware to me..."
In fairness, there's an option that allows you to "turn off" the feature.
"Only show pictures that I've chosen for my contacts - Pictures your contacts select for themselves will not be displayed" - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Bloatware. Pretty much useless. Of course, we all know eye-candy attracts people.
I've never understood the need for Avatars and "pictures". Then again I've never understood the whole chat and IM desire either.
In any case, if I am emailing someone I really don't care what they look like, I care about the conversation.
Besides, every Joe Nerd out there will have a picture of a skull or South Park characters as their "Avatar" picture. - jonathanex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What I was happy to see with this was it used the ones from Google Talk (hurrah!), and I could chose to see an image they set, or I set.
- CarlisleCockney, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I just wish that they would concentrate on making their spam filter better first! :o/
- mailman-zero, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2That's what I was hoping for... x-face was an awesome idea. What we need is a standard so EVERYONE uses the same thing.
http://www.mythic-beasts.com/tools-toys/xface/ - Darthmalt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2First step towards Gflicker?
- sfacets, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Talk about bloating a concept that works with needless add-ons.
