New Digg Comment System Video watch!
bitcast-b.bitgravity.com — K Rose made a mistake by posting this on Twitter a little early. :)
- 4909 diggs
- digg it
- timwizard, on 05/06/2008, -29/+153You are 9 seconds faster than me ;]
Mirror it!- sockpuppets, on 05/06/2008, -11/+61I'm concerned you're somehow hermetically adhered to your computer chair, have you been outdoors lately?
- KnifeOrSpoon, on 05/06/2008, -1/+30or ever???
- BeingHuman, on 05/06/2008, -0/+26There's nothing wrong with that procedure! People have it done all the time, and all of the doctors say it's perfectly safe.
- Light11, on 05/07/2008, -8/+4they said that about heroin too.
- Szandor, on 05/07/2008, -0/+7*if it's ergonomically "correct", of course.
- bigstinky, on 05/07/2008, -0/+6it would need chilled cup holders...and a sexy lighting scheme.
- Sil369, on 05/07/2008, -1/+2I likes me bigstinky's avatar
- Sil369, on 05/07/2008, -4/+2I predict this comment will get -641 buries and +842 diggs. Go.
- theblt, on 05/06/2008, -2/+55The video is hosted at BitGravity, the same CDN that Revision3 uses for all of their videos. I'm pretty sure they won't need a mirror.
- Alix7, on 05/06/2008, -23/+4*thinks of something useful to say*
- jemka, on 05/07/2008, -0/+32But Fails.
- Szandor, on 05/07/2008, -1/+11Shoudl've gone in the "This is why I love Digg" post.
- Alix7, on 05/06/2008, -23/+4*thinks of something useful to say*
- tidu, on 05/07/2008, -17/+37This comment is controversial
- sfrench, on 05/07/2008, -2/+30no it isn't
- raynar, on 05/07/2008, -2/+43I have a better idea...get rid of all the stupid ass javascript that causes my browser to hang. We get it, you're ajaxy...woo hoo.
- 11oops, on 05/07/2008, -0/+13Finally will be done.
- expert01, on 05/07/2008, -0/+4Sometime recently, FF3 or the site got much better at not giving me the "script is not responding" crap.
- daza, on 05/08/2008, -0/+1Pretty sure it was FF3.
- Stonekeeper, on 05/07/2008, -0/+1Not as controversial as not mentioning whether rediting a comment screws your links up.
- wavesmachine, on 05/07/2008, -1/+36That's what my girlfriend keeps telling me. :(
- FadieZ, on 05/07/2008, -2/+81Dugg for the developers listening to the Digg community. Seriously, everything I was bitching about is fixed in this video.
- swimmer88, on 05/07/2008, -1/+3HOORAY!!! when is this gonna happen?
- Sil369, on 05/07/2008, -0/+292018
- cutlerite, on 05/07/2008, -11/+2Taking a year to fix something that sucked ass isn't really listening.
- burnblue, on 05/07/2008, -1/+11When do they widen the comments area though? All that wasted space to the right is one thing i'd hoped they'd fix, so that comments are not so tall.
- bbardlbradd, on 05/07/2008, -6/+1Higher Resolution is the future. Get rid of your 1024x768 display, more real-estate.
- dimension128, on 05/09/2008, -0/+1Yea rly, try viewing digg (or just about any website today) fullscreen at 1920x1200
- iliketokick, on 05/12/2008, -0/+1It's easiest on the reader to read seven to ten lines of text on one line. While increasing the width of comments may make maximum use of your screen, it will make reading comments much more difficult.
- swimmer88, on 05/07/2008, -1/+3HOORAY!!! when is this gonna happen?
- mojoface, on 05/07/2008, -3/+27This is a test post!
- jemka, on 05/07/2008, -1/+24This is a test reply!
- etnuts, on 05/07/2008, -33/+3This is a bury test!
- FadieZ, on 05/07/2008, -0/+19Test successful.
- etnuts, on 05/08/2008, -0/+2the new digg system is now good to go
- FadieZ, on 05/07/2008, -0/+19Test successful.
- mrfreeziexp, on 05/07/2008, -0/+7Thank you digg!! that's just what I wanted.
- astrosmash, on 05/08/2008, -1/+5- Digg still needs a way to notify me when someone replies to one of my comments, like an icon at the top of the page.
- Every user should have a public "karma" level calculated from their existing comment ratings.
- There should be a "diggtard" filter that automatically filters out comments from people whose karma level is below some configurable level. - brundlefly76, on 05/08/2008, -0/+1I will beleive it when it is actually launched - we have been getting LOTS of promises about the comment system over the years - no action.
Digg needs to stop rolling up comment fixes like a giant MS service pack vaporware and start implementing them 'early and often'...the beauty of web development is the ability to do this.
- sockpuppets, on 05/06/2008, -11/+61I'm concerned you're somehow hermetically adhered to your computer chair, have you been outdoors lately?
- cjurczak, on 05/06/2008, -17/+833Looks good to me...Love that you can see how many diggs and buries on a comment...
- Thorpe, on 05/06/2008, -3/+53I remember you can use the API to show this, so the feature was there all along. Just not on the actual Digg website. I am glad to see it being integrated.
- centran, on 05/06/2008, -0/+45There is a greasmonkey script called diggratingextender that adds the number of diggs and burys.
guess I won't need that in a little while.- Verdanic, on 05/07/2008, -2/+16There are scripts to do a few things to Digg, but the thing with throwing them onto comment pages is that the page is already bloated to the point where it completely locks some browsers up until it loads. That extra post-processing just makes it that much worse.
Oh well, I absolutely love the looks of the new system. It took freaking long enough, but it looks like it will have been somewhat worth it.- DeadlyNinja, on 05/07/2008, -0/+47you stole my picture.

- kris33, on 05/06/2008, -6/+42A greasemonkey script like this has been available for ages :) cjurczak's comment has been buried 3 times
- madeingermany, on 05/06/2008, -1/+9-6, but who is counting ...
I wrote a perl script to monitor my comments (including ups and downs), which I hope will be obsolete as well - since the video does mention you can only show your comments and replies :)
If you care, output looks like this: http://marcofrom.com/diggkevin.html - insertAliasHere, on 05/06/2008, -0/+8http://www.neaveru.com/wordpress/index.php/2007/08 ...
- bstew22, on 05/08/2008, -0/+1- 16 to keep you guys in the loop.
i've used the greasemonkey script for a while. i like it. but i have no friends so i'm sure no one cares what i think. ;)
- madeingermany, on 05/06/2008, -1/+9-6, but who is counting ...
- masterm1nd, on 05/06/2008, -4/+16You can do that right now from here: http://64.90.176.34/digg/
- hadak, on 05/06/2008, -0/+9Thank you for posting that! I frequented this site, but the domain registry expired :-
- masterm1nd, on 05/06/2008, -1/+5Yup, it expired and someone else snagged the domain. I was without for a day.
- Burn, on 05/07/2008, -0/+5Yeah it was going to a stupid link farm page yesterday and it's back today...I thought maybe my ISP was going crazy!
- madeingermany, on 05/06/2008, -3/+8Why link to an IP?? http://www.neaveru.com/digg/
- masterm1nd, on 05/06/2008, -1/+12Because the domain was expired as of an hour ago.
- Buu700, on 05/07/2008, -6/+1I believe you are mistaken.
- neaveru, on 05/07/2008, -0/+23Expired yesterday and got it back today.
- Buu700, on 05/07/2008, -2/+1Yes, but masterm1nd's comment was just a few minutes before mine, and I checked that it was working before I typed my comment, so it's highly unlikely that he's right, unless I'm wrong...
- gameforge, on 05/07/2008, -1/+5DNS updates are not always instantaneous for all ISPs.
- masterm1nd, on 05/06/2008, -1/+12Because the domain was expired as of an hour ago.
- hadak, on 05/06/2008, -0/+9Thank you for posting that! I frequented this site, but the domain registry expired :-
- rpgmaker, on 05/06/2008, -2/+5CAN'T WAIT!
- itbescott, on 05/06/2008, -2/+4If only I could use if for this story!
- defaultdigger, on 05/07/2008, -0/+36Hopefully it will stop my computer sounding like it is trying to take off when the scripts load.
- FadieZ, on 05/07/2008, -0/+20Now if only the comment system could make me dinner.
- persept, on 05/07/2008, -0/+5I know! When will they fix the goddam comment system? Still so many issues to address...
- 1randomguyO8, on 05/07/2008, -0/+1...and do your laundry
- mille716, on 05/07/2008, -5/+4I think this is going to be a big improvement from the old system. Am I the only one who thinks the blue boxes around the comments help make the forums easier to read though? I'll miss them.
- panteradactyl, on 05/07/2008, -0/+1sooo when do we get to experience it in full??
- Triskozko, on 05/07/2008, -0/+15I've always wanted to know if a certain comment of say +1 diggs meant that everyone was apathetic about it or that it had 100 diggs and 100 buries.
- ophello, on 05/07/2008, -3/+1Digg comment design is slowly and surely becoming a beacon of truth and beauty.
- mmortal03, on 05/07/2008, -1/+15The mob mentality generally comes into play, where someone will digg up a post that already has more diggs that are up, and will digg down the same post where it already has more diggs that are down. They should set up digg to where you can't see the amount of diggs until you yourself digg it up or digg it down. I was using an HTML filter that basically did this, but it doesn't work anymore (I'll have to re-code it). When I first switched to it, it didn't feel right, because I was so accustomed to viewing the amount of diggs first before I made my decision, but that demonstrated exactly what was the problem. Now that I have gotten used to not seeing the number of diggs until I myself choose, I like it even more, because it is a more individually honest vote.
- masterm1nd, on 05/07/2008, -0/+4I agree, that's probably one of diggs biggest flaws.
- darkamster07, on 05/07/2008, -0/+3interesting, never thought of that before... sounds like a good idea though. I wonder would the rules be differebt for buried or low rated comments?
- masterm1nd, on 05/08/2008, -1/+1I'd say get rid of the "below viewing threshold" or give the user the option to set it at whatever they want. I'd say get rid of it but put a warming mark on the comments that are -10 or whatever. Aren't the unpopular views the one we should be hearing?

- sniper6121, on 05/06/2008, -55/+11I saw his twitter comment also :-) He replied with crap, wrong window, disregard. To late Kevin haha.
- stevene, on 05/06/2008, -3/+45Where is this "late" place you speak of?
- micsco, on 05/06/2008, -16/+3http://twitter.com/kevinrose/statuses/805043022
- stevene, on 05/06/2008, -2/+26WOOSH!
- zhephree, on 05/07/2008, -0/+0GRAMMAR JOKE! HAHA!

- davidrools, on 05/06/2008, -0/+34Mistake, or is Kevin the master of viral information spreading?
- 501337, on 05/07/2008, -0/+3This video is hosted by bitgravity.com which also hosts videos on Rev3. He realized the "mistake" one minute later...being a founder/board member/whatever of Rev3, if Kevin wanted the video pulled, it would be pulled.
Although he could've easily submitted & front paged the video himself, he chose a more creative way of getting the job done and for that I give him props.

- lesbodojo, on 05/06/2008, -10/+563yay @ zero ajax load time
double yay @ controversial sorting- sockpuppets, on 05/06/2008, -22/+4It's a trap!
- Fixthemedia, on 05/06/2008, -2/+4Im over ajax!
- kmg90, on 05/07/2008, -0/+1I like ajax its loading network without switching web pages
also its loading what you want not all the comments like the new system
- OneLess, on 05/06/2008, -1/+91Triple yay @ sorting for your own comments
Thanks for feeding my narcissism, Kevin.- 1randomguyO8, on 05/07/2008, -1/+3You can do that now by going to your profile and clicking on the "comments" tab. But I guess this is a easier way.
- mickstephenson, on 05/06/2008, -6/+130BOO @ being able to delete comments, when someone makes a dick of themselves it should be remembered for posterity
- coleki, on 05/06/2008, -1/+16oh, the pun.... :P
- 11oops, on 05/07/2008, -0/+57I believe that you can only delete during the edit time. No more (..) posts.
- Condottieri, on 05/07/2008, -3/+9
- MaxD, on 05/07/2008, -0/+10What happens when you delete a comment that has replies associated with it?
- Lingur, on 05/07/2008, -0/+23Try to imagine all life as you know it stopping instantaneously and every molecule in your body exploding at the speed of light.
- MaxD, on 05/07/2008, -1/+10God damnit. I hate it when that happens. Ruins the rest of my day.
- mookieXL, on 05/07/2008, -0/+7Your comment will be probably replaced by [COMMENT DELETED] like on Reddit.
- iridescence, on 05/07/2008, -0/+5Right. That's bad.
- Firehed, on 05/07/2008, -0/+4Digg crashes.
- Lingur, on 05/07/2008, -0/+23Try to imagine all life as you know it stopping instantaneously and every molecule in your body exploding at the speed of light.
- nksoccer13, on 05/07/2008, -0/+57It also looked like they increased the time you can edit your comments. Which is a plus. They also added the feature to change your vote which is something I have been waiting for since I joined the site in '06.
- bagboyrebel, on 05/07/2008, -2/+65sorry, I meant to digg you.
- OneLess, on 05/07/2008, -1/+22I see what you did there.
- Lewie, on 05/07/2008, -9/+1I know, reddit had that ages ago.
- bagboyrebel, on 05/07/2008, -2/+65sorry, I meant to digg you.
- rjosal, on 05/07/2008, -12/+3I just don't know why it's called "controversial." It seems like comments with +1000 diggs are the opposite - everyone agrees. Seems like a controversial sort would show you the comments with a lot of diggs AND a lot of buries, and could sit at 0 diggs. Regardless, it's a good sort to have.
- mediaphile, on 05/07/2008, -0/+23That's exactly what it does.
- jsaya, on 05/07/2008, -0/+4Twigs and Berries
Diggs and Buries
- verynegative, on 05/07/2008, -1/+1Everything is great, but I think they should change that ***** captcha also. I hate it.
- sockpuppets, on 05/06/2008, -22/+4It's a trap!
- HomieG6189, on 05/06/2008, -19/+5I love how in less than five minutes the stories are popping up everywhere.
- samscomputer2, on 05/07/2008, -0/+3because lots of people use the internets
- ashfaqrasul, on 05/06/2008, -18/+88No more stupid spinning thingy YESSSSSSSS
- mummbleswers, on 05/07/2008, -2/+25sorry people dugg you down, i hated that stupid spinning thingy also.
- SeaweedWater, on 05/07/2008, -0/+8I miss you already, stupid spinning thingy.
;(- redmyse, on 05/07/2008, -0/+3Stupid spinning thingy, RIP
- Irfit, on 05/06/2008, -9/+119HELL YES! FINALLY!
(sorry for the caps)- pgouy, on 05/07/2008, -10/+8I, for one, welcome our new comment system overlord !
- Intamin, on 05/07/2008, -0/+23This, my friend, is a time for caps.
- iPissExcellence, on 05/07/2008, -0/+1THATS OK!!
- doshindude, on 05/06/2008, -6/+605they basically added everything i ever complained about digg not having in the comments:
deleting comments
seeing how many diggs/buries there have been
fast loading comments
change your vote (I've mistakenly chosen the wrong option on comments so many times!)- sockpuppets, on 05/06/2008, -6/+246Now it just needs a "there, their, they're" grammar checker and we're all set!
- doshindude, on 05/07/2008, -1/+35I'm pretty sure I used the correct form of "there" in my comment though. But I still agree.
- Burn, on 05/07/2008, -1/+23You did, but your capitalisation is up the creek.
(As I am Australian, contrary to what Firefox believes, 'capitalisation' is actually spelt correctly).- mal1964, on 05/07/2008, -2/+30Australians always try to spin it their way.
- howzitgoin88, on 05/07/2008, -1/+2Ah, Australia. A country where the 'z' button is forgotten about.
For the record, i'm an Aussie too... - NikZ, on 05/07/2008, -0/+4Oh I dunno, I'm sure Shazza, Bazza, Gazza and Dazza get plenty of use from the 'z' button. ;)
- howzitgoin88, on 05/07/2008, -0/+2Most of the people i know who go by those names dont even know what the ***** a computer is! Plus there's the illiteracy problem...
- ThankTheCheese, on 05/07/2008, -1/+1oi oi oi!
wait, I think I did it wrong.
- Burn, on 05/07/2008, -1/+23You did, but your capitalisation is up the creek.
- duncanspumpkin, on 05/07/2008, -3/+51They're their calm down.
- lennybird, on 05/07/2008, -0/+14don't forget the: its and it's
- Szandor, on 05/07/2008, -1/+2Its it's Monty Python.
- foofighter828, on 05/07/2008, -1/+4automatic conjugation of the word "bias" would be nice too, but digg is apparently bias against that.
- mal1964, on 05/07/2008, -1/+6“ Rules and models destroy genius and art ”
- William Hazlitt - SuperWinner, on 05/07/2008, -0/+4two to too
- johnsmith3210, on 05/12/2008, -0/+12
- NevaDieENT, on 05/07/2008, -1/+3Not too happy about people being able to delete their comments though, now we can't rape anyone with buries for saying something stupid.
- mal1964, on 05/07/2008, -1/+2I agree deleting comments is cheesy, At the same time I don't think burying comments is that big of a deal. I Always read them and usually first I find them to be correct a lot of the times, And others to be the most entertaining
- ophello, on 05/07/2008, -0/+6your and you're
also, would have versus would of
- doshindude, on 05/07/2008, -1/+35I'm pretty sure I used the correct form of "there" in my comment though. But I still agree.
- picpak, on 05/06/2008, -2/+50Can I delete my comment at any time, or do I have to decide within 5 minutes whether my comment was crap?
- insertAliasHere, on 05/06/2008, -2/+112I hope you can't. It would be cool to delete a comment that you put in the wrong place, or quickly realized was irrelevant, but sometimes it's good to have documentation of someone's stupidity.
- picpak, on 05/07/2008, -0/+44Documentation? I could write a novel.
- luchid, on 05/07/2008, -8/+9"sometimes it's good to have documentation of someone's stupidity."
There is. It's Microsoft's Knowledge Base. - chemdiva, on 05/07/2008, -4/+2shoot. just totally repeated something someone else says just a little way down (jm1234567890). Wish i could delete this.
- Brss45, on 05/07/2008, -0/+6from what i saw i'm thinking you can only delete a comment while editing it.
so no more "edit: wrong page" or something, and you can just delete it.
however, people who post something that gets buried can't delete his/her mistake when s/he sees how unpopular it is.
- insertAliasHere, on 05/06/2008, -2/+112I hope you can't. It would be cool to delete a comment that you put in the wrong place, or quickly realized was irrelevant, but sometimes it's good to have documentation of someone's stupidity.
- jm1234567890, on 05/06/2008, -7/+68I like how you can't delete comments, it make people think a bit more before commenting.
- MtheoryX, on 05/06/2008, -3/+71No, it really doesn't make people think twice at all. See ^^
- FadieZ, on 05/07/2008, -4/+5Touché.
- MtheoryX, on 05/06/2008, -3/+71No, it really doesn't make people think twice at all. See ^^
- xero01, on 05/06/2008, -3/+50Oh *****! I accidentally buried your comment!
- FadieZ, on 05/07/2008, -1/+16edit: replied to the wrong comment.
- VenTatsu, on 05/07/2008, -2/+10Too bad you can't delete comments. That would be a really great feature. I wonder if Digg will ever add that.
- DarkDx, on 05/07/2008, -9/+6.... and the "controversial" thing they copied from reddit...
- tacojohn48, on 05/07/2008, -0/+20How dare they copy a sort function.
- Kontra8, on 05/07/2008, -0/+1I hope you understand now why so many people are against software patents.
Lets remember recycle bin for a moment...
- Kontra8, on 05/07/2008, -0/+1I hope you understand now why so many people are against software patents.
- VenTatsu, on 05/07/2008, -0/+4I think perlmonks.org might have had it first. Although there you have to vote before you can see a posts score.
- MonkCanatella, on 05/08/2008, -0/+1I wish you could delete other people's comments
- tacojohn48, on 05/07/2008, -0/+20How dare they copy a sort function.
- mal1964, on 05/07/2008, -2/+6Cool I can start fresh with a clean slate and forget about all my mistakes along with my troubled past!, Like a new me! Don't worry my fellow diggers i wont let you down this time!
- ligyron, on 05/07/2008, -5/+3So now if people say something stupid (and comical to others) and get burned for it, they can just delete it and pretend it never happened?
I don't think users should be given the authority to delete their own post
I can see it now, a bunch of replies to a "(message was deleted)" and people asking "What did he say??"- mal1964, on 05/07/2008, -1/+1"What did he say??"
I'm a chicken *****! - Heywoodj, on 05/07/2008, -0/+5We will adapt. Start post with @(insert ***** handle here) said, copy pasta their comment, flame away.

- Impeller, on 05/07/2008, -2/+2Deleting comments will make digg a bit dull, people who post dumb comments will be able to delete their stupidity and take our chance to point and laugh away!!
- VenTatsu, on 05/07/2008, -1/+3That implies that most people that post dumb comments can realize within a few minutes that they are dumb.
The best dumb comments are the ones by the people that clearly think they are being very smart.- mal1964, on 05/07/2008, -0/+580% of my comments are the first thoughts that enter my head, So they will never be perfect 100% of the time.

- eliah, on 05/06/2008, -11/+38I like everything about it except for one thing: it looks like the page is even bulkier than the current system, in terms of vertical space per comment. I know we can scroll and all, I would just like to see it tightened up a bit.
- mciampa1214, on 05/06/2008, -12/+82I feel the same way about your mom...
- 1800collect, on 05/06/2008, -2/+10True. And it would be nice for some visual color separation between each thread of posts. For example the first thread is white background, next thread is #eee background. It would be even better if each layer in a post had a color definition to help your eye out more where you currently are in the thread layer. They really need to get a graphic artist in there.
- iofthestorm, on 05/06/2008, -1/+9Yeah, it's actually nicer with the lines on the side because you can keep track of the threading. With the new system, in articles with deep threads it will definitely get hard to distinguish between threads. But speed>understanding threading, since half the time people post in the wrong thread now anyway.
- badjoke, on 05/07/2008, -0/+8I'm a big fan of white/light gray color skipping.

- Larz0rz, on 05/06/2008, -10/+198So now, with this new "controversial" sorting option, even if your comment sucks, you'll still get attention!
bury is the new digg?- ieure, on 05/06/2008, -4/+38You win this thread, Internet Commenter.
- SkippyDoorknob, on 05/06/2008, -1/+152Wouldn't a controversial comment be one that received a large amount of thumbs up AND thumbs down? For example, if a comment shows +3 diggs but is actually +200 and -197, then obviously that comment is very divisive and controversial.
A comment that gets +200 and -3 probably is not controversial.
Which will we see in the new system?- Larz0rz, on 05/06/2008, -1/+9I think you're right.
I see what he was saying now. It's not the comments with the most diggs and the comments with the most buries that get sorted, its the comments with a similar number of diggs and buries.
The only problem is (and you can see this in the video) a comment with a low number of diggs/buries could get put at the top just because it has exactly 1 digg and 1 bury.- antiver, on 05/07/2008, -0/+5You can perform a weighted calculation to determine "controversy" that avoids these issues.
- bernlin2000, on 05/06/2008, -6/+2Well the definition of controversial is just something that has been a magnet for conversation, good or bad. So any comment that has a lot of diggs would be controversial, even if most people think it's a good comment.
- Rikushix, on 05/06/2008, -1/+8Uh, I think you're mixing up the words "controversial" and "conversational". They are entirely unrelated. You may think "controversial" may just mean something that attracts a lot of attention. Unfortunately, this is one of the buzzwords the media uses to attract even more attention in headlines and such.
By definition, "controversial" means that there is lots of argument and discussion from both sides of the issue at hand, even the representation is not evenly balanced.
