- haski, on 10/10/2007, -2/+98How many times these dumb corporate managers need to fail to find out that throwing more money on something just to beat the competition is never going to work... Wikipedia - unpaid contributors, Amazon - unpaid contributors, Digg - unpaid contributors, YouTube - unpaid contributors.... now beat that! it's all about to figure out what users and contributors want most - and it's obviously not money. And I think it's good news.
- webcrunch, on 10/10/2007, -2/+85In the meantime, Mr Calacanis - the mastermind behind the remake of Netscape into a Digg clone - is complaining that someone copied his last stupid web site: http://www.calacanis.com/2007/09/05/ahhh-that-didnt-take-long-someone-copied-our-entire-site/
What? You're after someone for "copying" your "idea"? Pleaseeee.... - geekchic, on 10/10/2007, -2/+64Damn - I was looking forward to being bribed to work for them.
- rudy23, on 10/10/2007, -0/+34I though netscape launched another digg clone by the name Kaput
- diggstown, on 10/10/2007, -1/+34Are you referring to Netscape or Digg?
- kingp, on 10/10/2007, -3/+31digg me down...
come on...give us a delete comment option! - Chuck95, on 10/10/2007, -1/+25OK I just read a few comments on his site.... and is it just me or does he sound like a complete idiot? I mean his posts read like a 3rd grader.
"Ahhh... that didn't take long: someone copied our entire site! (anyone know who runeed.com is?)" - Who asks questions in the title like that? Did you copy this from a MySpace blog?
"This is my blog, this is where I live. You should also listen to my podcast." - Really? Its a blog? Wow I didn't realize... idiot... and I don't get to listen to a lot of podcasts that are likely 100x better (like Twit) so what makes you think I will listen to yours after reading this crap?
"Today I was 179 pounds for the second time. Last year I was at 207 and at the start of the year I was 197. To the haters who busted my chops for the past years calling me a fatty I say "frack you!"" - "To the haters who busted my chops"???? "Frack you"??? Who the hell is this clown and why would anyone trust their site to him after reading this drivel is beyond me.
Maybe I woke up on the wrong side of the bed - MISDIREK7ED, on 10/10/2007, -5/+29And yet.. here you are.
- dchomper, on 10/10/2007, -0/+21Who the hell cares about netscape or AOL anyway? They were so 1995.
- mediaspree, on 10/10/2007, -2/+22So instead of copying digg, they copy yahoo?
- youdlike2know, on 10/10/2007, -1/+21who actually uses netscape over digg anyway..
- facereplacer, on 10/10/2007, -1/+16that's kinda sad... I mean Netscape is... not that that site flopped (sunk)
- IHaveIssues, on 10/10/2007, -1/+16When they keep changing the portal/home page they will lose views.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -3/+18I got some AMAZING pics for you to see.
- anarchistuk, on 08/11/2009, -1/+14I see Kevin dugg this, kick them when their down why don't you!
- clperez390, on 10/10/2007, -1/+14At least it had a good comment system.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -4/+17Looks like it's not dead, it's just moving to another domain:
http://blog.netscape.com/2007/09/06/upcoming-netscape-changes/ - derjames, on 10/10/2007, -3/+15You forgot the stories about Ubuntu and the ipod.
- arbulus, on 10/10/2007, -3/+14When did ArsTechnica become spam?
- CarzorStelatis, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11Thank the Lord (or whatever deity or secular idol you believe in). Poor site design, poor execution, poor Netscape. It didn't deserve this.
- DigiDave, on 10/10/2007, -8/+18From what I understand, the social news site that is Netscape won't disappear -- it is going to move to a different domain. If anything, that makes more sense -- right now if you tell people you went to the social news site at Netscape, people give you a blank stare -- "what, you mean the web browser from the 90's?
It might be a good thing -- I for one think the more social news sites out there -- the better. Different strokes for different folks -- right now the Netscape community is big on discussion/debate through comments, Digg has the tech angle down, Newsvine seems like a place for activists/liberals/citizen journalists -- I don't know the redditt community as well -- but I imagine they have a community feel too.
Point is - Netscape isn't going to die -- it's just going to move, hopefully the community will move with it. - raano, on 10/10/2007, -2/+12What happened to the douch-bags who left Digg for the money? I'll bet they won't see dime-one.
- chrisjscott, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9This guy is such an incredible tool... I wish things related to him wouldn't even get dugg; it just provides him with traffic...
- AoSDFA, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9"Default" users. Step two of any AOL/Netscape business plan after establishing whatever tool they're pushing is to make it a default on as many OEM sold-at-bigbox machines as they can. They count on at least half of the new users not even knowing how to change it.
They just never got to step two for this one. Kinda like how they failed to leverage winamp before. - arbulus, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9Poor netscape. Nobody wants it.
- pixelbud, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9I am glad I'm not the only one who noticed that. Its blatantly obvious.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -4/+11I think I managed to prove my point.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -3/+10Well, we DO try to better the site. We believe we can restore digg to its former glory.
Can we not dream? - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8I guess they opened the air lock on him and let him fall into 4chan... where he was never heard from again.
- NSMike, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6No, more like, "Netscape copies model but not as well and expects to do better; Fails"
- epilonious, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5But I hear it has a great personality!
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5I haven't been on for ages. So I haven't paid attention to the recent mess. i just know a few people over there and have always liked thier content on Digg/Netscape.
- Wootery, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Exhibit A: Example troll-post, in this case against GNU/Linux.
Subject is being buried appropriately. - magstheaxe, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4They haven't announced where and when, though. That's a bad sign.
- Myonosken, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4What? Digg is actually a rather clever idea- sit back and let others make the monies for you.
- Tunguska, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6TWiT 57 forever...
- MellerTime, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5It's the American way!
- MellerTime, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3All in due time, my child... Your Digg clone will be squashed in the order in which it was received.
- arbulus, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3what if I don't believe in a deity or secular idol? Who should I thank?
- antdude, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4So what happened to Wil Wheaton?
- arbulus, on 10/10/2007, -3/+6Come on people, give charbarred a break. It is nice to find a place where you can have civil and informed dicussion about issues and it not turn into a mud slingging, ad hominem attack fest because people don't know how to debate without arguing. Why do discussions have to be nasty and why do people who want a civilized discussion have to be derided?
- neoq36, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I didn't even know Netscape was still around
- jer2eydevil88, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Strange it seems this new homepage is also the new homepage for http://www.aol.com which is IMO stupid as hell. Now its even harder to find all the services offered by AOL....
- epilonious, on 10/10/2007, -3/+6*sigh* I'm probably going to get dugg down for this... but I imagine they did get money, and if this new site doesn't pay them they will move on to something else. That is because they are enterprising individuals who were willing to follow risky new things... as opposed to people who apparently marry themselves completely to one option and then cackle when the other ones don't do as well and call their users douche-bags.
- dibby1, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Owned.
- MellerTime, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Calacanis, for running it into the ground so quickly.
- supermanred, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3***** 'em.
Digg goes on. Often imitated, NEVER duplicated. - icexe, on 10/10/2007, -4/+6Digg - often imitated, never duplicated;
- alexkillby, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2ahahaa take that jason calacanis!!!
- sintaks, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2They could at least take some of their old design with them... the old page is hideous. Well... more hideous than their social site.
