Net Giants & ISPs Fear Canadian DMCA, Seek Copyright Balance
arstechnica.com — A group of ISPs, Internet companies, retailers, and broadcasters have just told the Canadian government that they don't want more copyright, they want balanced copyright. How does more fair use, no more copying levy, and reduced penalties for P2P sound?

- stoanhart, on 02/15/2008, -0/+24Now to see whether our politicians will stand up to US pressure and listen to their own citizens...
- aidave, on 02/15/2008, -0/+1The Conservatives? Ha. They want to live in America.
- heypetray, on 02/15/2008, -0/+9I love 'Run DMCA'
- Ph0biA, on 02/15/2008, -3/+1Finally! If you let the government control the internet, then where else am I going to get porn? 4chan will be dead =(
- VacaN, on 02/15/2008, -19/+3Horrible day for copyright holders.
- clubby, on 02/15/2008, -0/+20A horrible day for copyright *exploiters* but no big loss for typical individual copyright holders, I'd say. After all, we're pursuing balance in the copyright system, not its wholesale destruction.
Dugg for justice.

- tgc1, on 02/15/2008, -1/+16The only people worried about their IP and Copyrights are large corporations. People like me, who produce art and so on are not worried. Then again, I don't make my living from exploiting people.
- cliffski, on 02/16/2008, -0/+2*****. lots of small companies are hit by piracy. dont utter such ***** and pretend to speak for all copyright holders.
- max420, on 02/15/2008, -2/+13Woo! I wrote like three letters to my MP about this, its good to know that big businesses are also on the side of the consumer on this one.
There is hope yet! - dagamer34, on 02/15/2008, -1/+2Sure would be nice if we could have some of that stuff. Copyright right now doesn't benefit consumers at all. Why is it legal to rip a music CD but not a DVD movie? Isn't it the same principled idea? Just baffling to me.
- b0rg, on 02/15/2008, -0/+1It's not ripping the DVD, it's bypassing the copy protection that runs afoul of the law. The justification seems to be on DMCA grounds (right or wrong, it's the stick they beat you with) and trade-secrets grounds with the CSS keys.
Ripping an unprotected DVD would be exactly the same, legally, as ripping an audio CD - no course of action unless you're redistributing the content.
Not a lawyer, but that's my best understanding of it. - BearinG, on 02/23/2008, -0/+1nevermind

- Chaoticfist, on 02/15/2008, -2/+7Ya this was insane. It was just mayhem trying to stop this bill. We help protests in Toronto and Alberta as well pretty much a mass email campaign to stop the bill. Hard to believe it worked. Also this helped generate interest in The Pirate Party of Canada. Which is here.
Face book link i know, but we are working on a site.

Of course the RIAA and other ***** are working to pressure our goverment to introduce a copy of the DMCA to canada. All i can say is ***** them. Long live P2P!!!!!- cliffski, on 02/16/2008, -0/+1grow up
- Xondar, on 02/15/2008, -0/+15If the Canadian people had our way, then the government would throw out their draconian copyright reforms.
I'm glad that the BCBC is in one mind with the Canadian people on this.
Also, we REALLY need to get rid of the blank media levy. That spindle of CDs is advertised for $10? No, it actually costs $40. Complete *****.- midbc, on 02/15/2008, -0/+2yeah i just bought a spindle of 100 verbatim DVD+R for $64.66
and in the US it only costs about $33.98
but i would gladly continue to pay the extra levy if the artists get their cut and music / movie industries have their cut of it and then ***** off and quit bugging people- StanMort, on 02/15/2008, -0/+2I just paid $29.99 at Costco in Ontario for 100 TDK DVD+R Shop around next time
- BearinG, on 02/23/2008, -0/+1If only the money went straight to artistsl.. I usually buy maxell 50pk dvd-+r at bestbuy on sale for 17.99..
That's 41 cent a DVD with taxes.. I doupt it breaks the bank but not all media is used for burning music of movies..

- mugsy3117, on 02/15/2008, -0/+10C'mon Canada you got this, you are backup plan number 1 if Hilary gets elected.
- grantmoore3d, on 02/15/2008, -0/+9No! Leave our laws as they are... they work in favour of everyone right now. All this means it he RIAA won't be as huge dicks as they are in the US, but they will still be dicks.
- BearinG, on 02/23/2008, -0/+1" 'Piracy for personal use is no longer targeted,' Noël St-Hilaire, head of copyright theft investigations of the RCMP (fixed for Torrentfreak), said in an interview with Le Devoir. “It is too easy to copy these days and we do not know how to stop it,” he added."
Also from the original article (translated from french) "We've got enough on our plate already, and unfortunatly, we don't have time for the little guy."

- ludditte, on 02/15/2008, -1/+7keep writing to our MPs, I did, he's a conservative, I reminded him that a minority govt. on the eve of an election should not piss off his constituents, the voters. The record companies might slide him some money, but this is not the US, they can't buy an election, yet...
- Yage2006, on 02/15/2008, -1/+2I live in canada and from what i know there are no penalties for p2p or any kind of sharing even by ftp at least none that are ever enforced.
- BearinG, on 02/23/2008, -0/+1Not sure why you were dugg down.. I posted an article 2 threads up.. The RCMP does not target individual that download for personal use. Its not legal.. but nothing happens..
