- thebellmaster1x, on 11/07/2007, -1/+30I'll wait for some sort of quantum storage. God knows it'll be weird--I'll try to download something, but it'll turn out that it's been on my computer since it was built.
- romistrub, on 11/06/2007, -4/+31The description of this article made me feel smart. You mean storage is used in both PCs AND other electronic devices that require storage?!?! WOAH!!!!
- asdfuiop, on 11/06/2007, -1/+26Crossing my fingers for the first REAL iPod Nano... a petabyte around my wrist *might* suffice
- romistrub, on 11/06/2007, -1/+20Why not just simulate the neural signals? Skip the middle man!
- aywwts4, on 11/06/2007, -1/+13I'm thinking implanted into the base of my skull, directly applying vibrations directly to my eardrums.
- pentomino, on 11/06/2007, -0/+11Put these in the "when will we see this in stores?" pile they talked about in Diggnation.
- ha1f, on 11/06/2007, -2/+11Price is...
OVER 9000!!!!!!!!! - accessviolation, on 11/06/2007, -2/+11Are you retarded? You're retarded aren't you?
- CheeseburgerBro, on 11/06/2007, -0/+7Aw, whatever -- this is nothing big.
- chesscat, on 11/06/2007, -1/+8Maybe this will improve Vista boot times to be no more than 5 minutes.
- 5urr3al5am, on 11/06/2007, -0/+5Yes because PC and mobile devices are different
- KMartSheriff, on 11/06/2007, -1/+4I see what you did thar
- igotnotime, on 11/05/2007, -0/+3I am not as greedy and demanding as asdfuiop, I don't need a petabyte around my wrist! I would be happy with 5 terabytes honestly, but yes it does need to be in the nano form factory, my classic though would need to be a PB! ;)
- aywwts4, on 11/05/2007, -0/+3I think any "hearing" not reproducing frequencies and sounds we can hear naturally would be incredibly unpleasant, and probably somewhat disconcerting.
While something incredibly loud may cause no damage, it would probably be an awful experience, and while you might be able to hear dog whistle frequencies, as anyone who can hear transformers buzzing will testify, its an incredibly unpleasant sound. - romistrub, on 11/05/2007, -1/+4Scared by technology? What are you, 80? :P
Honestly, though, the regulations on nanotechnology are incredibly stringent. You should be more worried about self-serving AI in the coming years. - igotnotime, on 11/05/2007, -1/+4Speaking of the SSD drives aren't there a couple laptops using these as their primary storage drives on the market? Not much like 40GB I was thinkin...
- romistrub, on 11/05/2007, -1/+4I just started thinking about this, and I blew my own mind! All properties of our hearing (effective pitch range, loudness range, etc.) are determined by the physical properties of our ear. If we circumvent these properties and simulate "unnatural" eardrum stimulation directly, what in the world would it sound like?! Where's a neuroscientist when you need one...
- Narcism, on 11/05/2007, -0/+2if I'm getting vibrations.. my eardrums aren't exactly the first place I want them to be.
- canUdi9it, on 11/06/2007, -0/+2Nah, Microsoft Windows will have bloated to a 1 TB footprint by then. The boot time must remain constant to keep the users frustrated.
- romistrub, on 11/05/2007, -0/+2I figured you weren't *actually* worried about that, although you can't really tell sarcasm from insanity these days (*cough* Ann Coulter). I'm just making a point about how much fear is associated with the "nanotechnology" buzzword. Too much, in my opinion.
- ericthegreat, on 11/06/2007, -0/+2"could one day" .............
- boshaus, on 11/06/2007, -0/+2At any given point there's always 20+ technologies promising to revolutionize data storage.. yet here we are, still storing everything on magnetic disks and flash. I'll believe it when I see it.
- canUdi9it, on 11/06/2007, -0/+2But everybody is doing it.
- Stalks, on 11/06/2007, -1/+3Vietnamese Dollars?
- shinynew, on 11/07/2007, -0/+2until you tried to open it and two new universes could be created one where you have the file and one where you don't.
- romistrub, on 11/05/2007, -0/+2I think "disconcerting" is the perfect word to use. I mean, what causes hearing pain? I think it has to do with pain receptors in the ear. If you were to bypass the ear itself, I think you would bypass the pain receptors, too. So the "sound" would affect you accordingly: no pain receptors firing, but all subsequent unpleasant repercussions would still exist.
Sill wondering what the physical limitations of the brain are... specifically, since brain functions are "digitized", I wonder what the maximum bit rate (or perhaps the *only compatible* bit rate) for sound is. I'm digging myself a hole, here.
(reply button didn't work... said "session expired". w/e) - miletwo, on 11/05/2007, -0/+2O come on... I'm sure we could create models of our eardrums and apply acoustic algorithms to modify the sound to apply our own "acoustic fingerprint," if you will. Even doing this without actual eardrum modeling using personalized EQ's would accomplish the same thing.
- woohhaa, on 11/06/2007, -0/+2I am against doping.
- wushu18t, on 11/06/2007, -0/+2i guess some good things are coming from the "new americrap university". oh, yeah. i go there. can't wait to get out.
- Lockhart, on 11/06/2007, -0/+1Think of all the porn you can store in that... :P
- Rahodeb, on 11/05/2007, -0/+1Yeah, nothing to fear about technology. Move along:
http://www.defenseindustrydaily.com/usmc-gladiator ... - romistrub, on 11/05/2007, -0/+1*****. Turns out I read that completely wrong... I read "my eardrums aren't exactly where I want them to be." As in... "my eardrums aren't at the base of my skull, therefore implanting a vibration mechanism at the base of my skull would be useless."
RTFC, I guess. - romistrub, on 11/05/2007, -0/+1I would argue that eardrums are more a limitation than something that should be emulated.
- rarson, on 11/06/2007, -0/+1Punctuation is the least of his problems...
- CanNot, on 11/06/2007, -0/+1You have no idea how hard I laughed when I read your link.
- pch0mey, on 11/06/2007, -0/+1/log yourself
- booshack, on 11/05/2007, -0/+1Dugg for arstechnica treating this realistically. I've heard about nano-ram for 10 years now, enough with the BREAKTHROUGH ZOMG.
- shinynew, on 11/06/2007, -0/+1could we not just say computers?
- rarson, on 11/06/2007, -0/+1Is that the one where they write a program that takes the remainder fractions of a cent from each transaction and put it into a bank account?
- JLecker, on 11/05/2007, -0/+1CANi? If it means being able to download even more por-- er, pictures, then yes, you can.
- dawhitie, on 11/05/2007, -0/+1Finally some one redesigning the square wheel. I really hope this catches on.
- endersadvocate, on 11/05/2007, -0/+1yen
- Glitchr, on 11/05/2007, -0/+1After the opening line "ASU researchers claim"... I thought they had come up with the ultimate beer bong. I didn't realize they did real research at ASU... Flanders knew the truth when he said, "Apparently, heaven's easier to get into than Arizona State".
- shinynew, on 11/06/2007, -0/+1or you recording studios could just make a custom built computer to do those effects super fast and release each song twice, one direct sound one indirect.
- pixelpimp, on 11/05/2007, -0/+1Awesome!!! Maybe we can manufacture these Technology's in America and pay off our debt to China so we won't be speaking Mandarin in 10 years! Thanks Bush and Bush Senior! NAFTA Sux!
- inactive, on 11/05/2007, -0/+11 petabyte iPhones!?!?!?!?!?!?!!?
- rockefeller2, on 11/06/2007, -0/+0Gosh, I'm kind of tired of seeing these technology breakthroughs and knowing that the poor soul who busted his/her hump countless hours in the lab will never reap any rewards from his/her hard work.
Engineering is one of the least appreciated jobs you can have. - Idrive, on 11/06/2007, -1/+1I go to ASU...good to hear we are contributing positive things to society other than partyin our asses off...well guess that doesn't really contribute anything to society but non the less...
- Schneckehaus, on 11/05/2007, -0/+0It was both 50% there and 50% not there.
*****' Schroedinger and his mind games. - RobbieS, on 11/06/2007, -1/+1ASU. Our girls are hotter and our professors are smarter. Believe it.
