Name My Baby! (pass it along)
spreadsheets.google.com — Well, my wife is nearly 8 months pregnant with a boy and we still can't agree on a name, so I thought I'd turn this problem over to the power of the web. Please send in your ideas for baby names. Keep in mind our last name is McDaniel so you'll have to work with that. Baby McDaniel is due June 5th; I hope you'll help find a name we can agree on.

- natikaal, on 06/08/2008, -0/+0Just to warn you, this is very long. I give no names, just ideas on how you yourselves can decide together better.
Congratulations! Okay, I can't give any specific suggestions, since I do not know the preferences of either one of you. However, I have had to name 5 boys. I'm guessing this is your first? You'll probably find that while agreeing on something so important never gets that much easier, you will have a system in place. My husband and I agreed to take turns choosing the first and middle names. (With consent from the other of course.) By the end, we would each come up with our 2 or 3 favorites and ask for input. However, choosing a good name has steps involved.
1) Are you willing to name your child after anyone? (My friend chose to name her children to honor her ancestors. My husband and I decided none of our children would be named after anyone to make life simpler.)
2) Do the meanings of names matter to you? (Each of my children has a hidden biblical meaning to their names.)
3) How many syllables do you think sound best with your last name? (We liked 2-3, but chose 2 since our name was so long.)
4) Do you like traditional or unique names? ( If you choose unique, the dictionary will be your best bet, it is easier to find girls names than boys names there.)
5) Don't forget the initials. ( Sometimes if you are stuck, it is easier to narrow your search down by which initials sound best together - for example: your child may choose to go by A. Marie McDaniel. Will that sound good if 'she' chooses to be in a professional career of some sort?)
6) I had a friend, whose parents named all of their children so that their initials spelled GIN. (Now, this wasn't particularly embarrassing to my friend, but it may be to others, depending on the given initials.)
7) Where are you comfortable getting names from? ( I actually ended up choosing all of my names from the same baby name book... name escapes me now. But, there are LOTS of sites out there willing to help. After a quick perusing, the best I've seemed to find is http://www.babycenter.com/baby-name-finder )
I know this was a long comment, sorry. I hope you find what you're looking for. Sometimes it's easier to start with the middle name. Also, my last actually wasn't named for quite a while after he was born. So, if you decide to get to know your child and let their personality choose the name, that's fine too. Laws on how long you have to pick a name varies from state to state, but the most complicated part of not yet having a name is medical records. They're a hassle. (And the shock of other people, but that's kinda funny.)
Best Wishes - ethicalhacker, on 06/09/2008, -0/+1Mission accomplished. Baby is Nathan Parker McDaniel. Thanks to all who submitted suggestions.
