- leetleo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+46I have an idea!
Why don't we implement some sort of parent or guardian to monitor and take responsibility for a child's activities on the internet?
... oh wait. - krabat, on 10/10/2007, -0/+42I would gladly testify to the attorney general that I have found it extremely difficult to seduce minors on Facebook.
- smurf22, on 10/10/2007, -2/+40*parent* My kid got molested, over the internets!
*officer* How?
*parent* He was using the facebook.
*officer* why weren't you watching what little jimmy was doing?
*parent* uhhh
*officer* Also how did your kid get out to go meet this person?
*parent* ummmmmm
*officer* you fail at life - cyclonesworld, on 10/10/2007, -0/+35Parents parenting their children? Are you mad?!
- hiphoc, on 10/10/2007, -3/+31Let the fall attack on the internet begin. You know, drugs are bad cause a few over use. So punish the entire country. A few people get stalked online, punish millions of users. Its not about safety, its about getting government control over a source of freedom in this country. The last source of freedom. The politicians still have not gained a foot hold yet with taxes and legislation to "protect" us from evil doers. Fight back people.
- hiphoc, on 10/10/2007, -3/+29 If govt cared about us, they would make sure the toys and food from china is safe. They would preserve our jobs, look into better healthcare.. But no lets ***** up the web... So we can protect the kids. Politicians use kids as props like hookers use handi wipes.
- FlamingFlamingo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+23Well, come on. Facebook has lots of privacy settings! It's the same every time-- I log on to find a girl I want to stalk, and her profile is completely private! Yeesh!
- tomis, on 10/10/2007, -0/+17If a 12 year old lies about their age to sign up for a website and then subsequently meets up with a pedophile, it is not that websites fault. It is the fault of the 12 year old for lying, and their parents for not educating their kids. But god forbid we hold the responsible parties responsible for their irresponsibility...
- stuman77, on 10/10/2007, -1/+15FTA:"Minors also have no problem finding lewd and sometimes even pornographic images on the site"
What? There's PORN on the INTERNET? SINCE WHEN?!!?!?one!? - spaceninja, on 10/10/2007, -2/+14How dare you suggest that parents pay attention to their children. That is the role of politicians, they know better than parents do. Politicians have a much higher moral standard that the "common folk" /sarcasm
- kingbob713, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9This guy needs a more "safe" place...like a padded room.
- freebsdmike, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Oh yeah that's exactly what we need. The government trying to "protect" us from fictional evils.
- dattaway, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7What is the internet? A babysitting service?
- toxicityj, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7I don't see how its not safe. you can't even view a person's profile unless they're your friend. and if a kid accepts a predator as a friend, its their parents fault for not doing their job.
- regexp, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6So an attorney general is rambling about "protecting the children" and "obscenity." So the question is what political office is he gunning for?
- davidjunit, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Well it was pretty much 18+ when it was just open to college students. It still doesn't seem as bad as myspace and I think as long as they've got the UI locked down so kids can't make ugly themes I think those kiddies will stay over on myspace.
- SnapETom, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Cuomo is a showboating piece of *****.
- picsectionpleez, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Im in the internetz chattinz with yur little johnee
- bigteebo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5But now you know their full name, since Facebook is so anti-handle.
- BuddyDoQ, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6There is a balance to be had, with general internet usage (such as the "safety" of who can see your Facebook) I personally feel it should be in the hands of parents. Just tell your kids, "If you post it on the net, it's as public as if you were to scream it as loud as you could from the top of every building in the world, forever and ever...." However, I do enjoy a good FBI spam/virus bust. If Facebook were unsafe due to directly stealing, writing viruses, and other criminal acts on their end, I feel it's then time for the authorities to step in.
- Murdats, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5what government? the super awesome planet earth government?
and for your tag idea, what if I make my own page, and host it myself, will I be required to add this tag, what if my page is little more then (html)(b)This is my page, go away(/b)(/html) (soz digg doesnt like the pointy ones)
also any software that checks for these tags would be easily circumenvted, have a proxy add the required tag to every site or just find the password and give yourself full access, its not as though things like net nanny are all too effective with slightly compentent kids anyway. - inkyblue2, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5come on. no, it's really not a conspiracy to control freedom. it's (a) the "protect your ass from lawsuits" mentality, and (b) pandering to stupid emotional issues to gain political points. the fact that freedoms end up getting stomped in the process is not the result of some faceless bad guy who wants to control you, it's the byproduct of our legal system and our easily manipulated voting behaviors. big brother is of our own creation.
address the source issues, or it will all continue to get worse. :( - DevlinD, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4These are the type of people that ban baggy pants and spinner rims. Its the ***** internet, you cannot control it but you rely on it daily...and thats the beauty of it all :)
Bah this isn't even worth a rant. - HalfNakedPappy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Great... the streets of New York aren't safe either.
- EssPii, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3And the world is less one gullible kid.... it's natural selection at its finest.
- ventralnet, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I have no problem with logging your children's messages as long as you tell them you are. If you don't tell them you are its an invasion of privacy. Looks like you told them though so cheers to you
- bffoley, on 10/10/2007, -4/+7If they made Facebook 18+, I'd have no complaints
- Tricky, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Uber phail
- zaxroom, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3we cant try and make the world idiot proof, nothing is safe if you try hard enough
- tingrin87, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4except... logfiles can be deleted.
- jakerockvell, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Nothing is safe for minors online.
- azprofessional, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Spam troll
- sirdaz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I love how they give a fair few examples of such groups.
- MacParrot, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Is this the same guy that wanted to make it illegal to listen to a MP3 player while crossing the street or an entirely different idiot?
- donsherio, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I have to disagree. If you compare Facebook to MySpace, its 100x better, safer, and more efficient than MySpace. I rarely get spam, see sexually explicit photos, have random "women" contacting me, or have the odd predator messaging me. If you look at myspace, you're almost guaranteed to never go one day without receiving some form of inappropriate content or spam (unless you set your sexual orientation to "gay"... that apparently wards off SOO much :P)
BUT what I'm getting at is Facebook's team has done a wonderful job. Its very hard to communicate or spy on someone without actually being their friend. There are privacy controls for every aspect of the site, and I would just have to disagree and say that the Govt is exaggerating things just because they want to pick on the new guy.
Life isn't safe. Facebook is as good as it gets. (The Gov't should focus on more important things other than pretending that they know how our Online hub works.) - undergrace, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3You're right, you must be someone's friend to view their profile (unless you're in a mutual network). However, I think the main problem they were addressing was that adults can still MESSAGE underage minors. You do not have to be someone's friend to put a message in their Inbox - by default everyone has a "Send _____ a Message!" option next to their names in the Directory. It sounded like minors were being solicited for sex through that method - hence why people would include their phone numbers, so they can be contacted. Child predators probably don't care what books you like or if you have a FunWall... your profile information is not what they are after. They want sex, period, and will blind-message anyone they can until they get it.
- picsectionpleez, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Oh just wait- with Microsoft taking over part of Facebook it will be sterile in no time.
- kurtwinter, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2First they came for the exhibitionist facebook girls... and i cried.
- MScrip, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Really? When looking at Facebook? Are you sure?
- pyrates, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Here's what I got from the article:
1. Any kind of nudeness facebook says they will take down but weren't.
2. Any groups of a pornagraphic nature have to be 18+.
3. Signing up as someone who is under 18 was receiving inappropriate messages.
4. Kids lying about their age when they sign up.
I can see them doing 1 and 2, but they can't fix 3 and 4. For 3, Just have the account reported and the message can be checked by staff. - Darkside2984, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4***** stole the code from his buddies. I hope someone sues him right back into his diapers.
- ladyarcher85, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Facebook not safe enough for minors? Newsflash so is REAL LIFE.
So what else is new? At first I felt like ranting but these idiots are not worth it. - Crossmenjeff, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3well if facebook was just for college kids and alumni (like it was until about a year ago) we wouldn't have this problem. what about those who stopped after high school, or decided to leave high school altogether. well they have myspace.
- drakelord, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4Ya know, over-controlling can backfire as well. You say you only allow messenger, so that you can read all of his/her logs and spy on your kid. Good for you. My dad tried that on me when I was younger, and when I found out he was doing it, I started playing with his head. Popping up porn sites and the like. Then later when he confronted me about it, he had no proof to go by other than some logs saying I had typed the stuff in. I never actually went to the sites, just typed in the names.
Also, anything important I needed to say/do, I did at the school library or I killed the keyloger before I said such things at home. - ubuwalker31, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3unless they are using a usb key and gaim, or using meebo.com...
- MagicCake, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2"I'm a cop."
WHO IS YOUR DADDY AND WHAT DOES HE DO?!
I'M A COP YOU IDIOT! - badarabdad, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2agreed. there were at least 3 other democratic candidates that would have been better, but cuomo has the family ties to get the nod from the democratic party. he was also hiring media defender to entrap viewers of kid porn online. i'm no fan of kid porn, but hiring a private firm to do police work is lazy at best, and frightening at worst.
