- lkmbrd, on 10/10/2007, -1/+97MySpace is the trailer park of the Internet.
- tuzziel, on 10/10/2007, -0/+30"TellThem serving as a proxy for logging into people’s MySpace accounts"
I don't wanna sound like some MySpace advocate here, but maybe they saw some serious account-compromising problems stemming from this new "service" - fuzzmeister, on 10/10/2007, -4/+21And this is why Facebook will beat MySpace. Facebook strongly encourages you to create applications for it, and shares their data. MySpace locks out anyone that so much as looks at them in the wrong way, doesn't have a good API, and doesn't like people making money off of their apps.
- deadlift, on 10/10/2007, -2/+17Call me in 10 years and we can have some tea and talk about the Myspace fad that died. Rupert cried.
- str3ama, on 10/10/2007, -0/+14no myspace is more like the Internet trashcan - where everything gets posted after its made its rounds. It's the (new) geocities, where animated pictures of babies dancing and might as well be midi music plays in the background to a wretched and horrible design.
- Bricks, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11And like many of these widget startups, off to Facebook they go. Where the (still baby) API actually supports the functionality they need
- t0ny, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Facebook is good, but how do you get your retarted friends that like gifs, and crapy music to switch? Oh and having everything on the profile transparent so you cant read it!
- etnu, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7I still don't understand what the appeal of myspace is. You can make a ***** profile page, slap some annoying music on it, and then create a useless "friends" list of 50,000 people that you don't even know?
The only (brief) utility that it ever had was that, due to the fact that most people have an account, you had a relatively spam-free communications medium. Over the last 2 years, though, myspace spam has gotten to be almost as bad as email spam.
I keep hearing myspace touted as a communications platform ("stay in touch with your friends!"), but I really just don't see that either. The only people that seem to be using myspace in this capacity are internet newbies who've never really tried real communications tools. Ordinary people are still emailing, IMing, using the telephone, or (heaven forbid!) actually talking to their friends in person. - Moriya, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Facebook?
- StickWST, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8I'd like to keep in touch with classmates, without having a gran mal seizure please.
- Rivetgeek, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Yeah ***** myspace for not letting a third party service act as a proxy and remove their revenue from ads. /sarcasm
Not to mention the fact that this service was being used to spam people's cell phones. Fun Fun - Cyberen, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4It's owned by News Corp. No wonder it's become evil.
- priceev, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4facebook isnt any better. screw social networks.
- FetalSage, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3MySpace can go ***** themselves. At least Facebook embraced the community with their platform, although the invitations can get annoying, it's a controlled area.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3You are linking to .com and not .mobi. Should be
http://tellthem.mobi/ - PiMPSP, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4MySpace is a hole as far as I'm concerned, the users of MySpace don't deserve the privlage to use this type of application anyways.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3"Hello, I write music and I'd like to spread the word about my talentless efforts with a load of other talentless *****"
- tdous, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3"Hello, I'm a genuinely talented and interesting musician with my own website and very few resources. I've tried contacting a wide number of sites/companies/media outlets in the hope of gaining some exposure for my music which, when performed live, has garnered a small but respectable following. I just need to make that next step to grow further and make a success of this thing but I can't seem to find anywhere that offers genuine potential exposure on my budget."
- omarciddo, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Myspace deserves to die. It's slow, buggy, messy, and they've still got those ***** CSS layouts as an excuse for their lack of design ability. There's no possible functionality to be added unless they do it all themselves, and it's always poorly implemented. I mean it looks like it was designed by their preteen userbase. It's ok enough for bands, sorta, but there's Purevolume for that now. There's almost no reason to use ***** except to suck the preteens into something, whatever that may be.
- kodek, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3While I agree with you, I find all the application requests from my friends extremely annoying. Same with the actual applications. Most of them are useless, IMHO.
- tdous, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Yeah sounds like there is more than just crushing a startup, not that it would serve the poster's bias if there was.
- r3zonance, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Yeah, digg up to that!
I absolutely hate all the crapplications people are churning out on Facebook, it is fast becoming the next MySpace (and not in a nice way). My screen is just cluttered with application requests. - rune420, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2It was a 580 million dollar investment- you sure he has already made that back in two years?
If so, it was a real bargain buying it with a P/E less than 2, much cheaper than any other such high-profile buyout I've heard about. - razei, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2you went to the site on your mobile, entered your myspace name/pass, then you could send messages to your friends directly from your phone.
- shoerob, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2MySpace is *****.
- MScrip, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2> "Ordinary people are still emailing"
I don't know anyone's e-mail address anymore. Even my close friends. But, I can find them on either Facebook, MySpace or both. Those websites have become the internet phonebook.
When I check my e-mail, there is nothing there. But, when I log into Facebook, there is a giant page full of stuff. New photos from friends, announcements, and other new stuff. It's satisfying to see something new each time I go to Facebook. When you look at someone's profile on Facebook you actually get to see something. However, sallysue246@hotmail.com gives me nothing... - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1But I'm not the one saying he's going to cry.
That's your 14 year old brain not working right ;) - bigsim, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Lol, I dug you up for the "***** bitches" comment.
- cyberfelon, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Social networking sites like MySpace have their place and can be very useful. Sure, they can be abused and overused by morons, but so can any of the "accepted" communication tools you mentioned. "Ordinary people" are using sites like MySpace and Facebook too.
- JoshuaH, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Someone should throw rocks @ their servers. Not because of this, but many other reasons.
- Hazardc, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Myspace still has its place for me, not everyone has switched over to facebook, and it's more convenient for me being involved a lot in music stuff..
facebook is basically where i have all my network of friends that i see at parties/bars or in class. myspace is just a huge social network of people ive met from tons of different places around the country and throughout life..
Then again i dont have any of the annoying friends that post tons of ridiculous pictures and stupid chain letter bullitens, so i guess i dont see that side of it too much - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1He made a profit the second he struck a deal with Google.
- theblt, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Why in the ***** would you "Cease and Desist" functionality to your product?
- fosspathei, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1myspace can be used as a good way of keeping in touch with people like high school classmates who aren't in the same city as you anymore, so you can't hang out with them all the time or call them on the phone but you still want to let them know how you're doing now and see what they're up to as well. a lot of people also think it's a fun way of expressing themselves with their profile page.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1"Hello, I like to offer a third option in arguments and I'll have you see the flaw in your side. The problem with your way of thinking is that you assume MySpace should offer publicity. It should not. A website for a starting band will run 100 dollars max per year, and then people would have no reason to go on MySpace, and it would die.
- 35263526, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Cluttered? There's one small box on the top right of your home screen containing all of that stuff. It couldn't clutter your screen if a thousand friends each sent a thousand application requests.
- tdous, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2*****. Why in the ***** would you ***** want some ***** proxying your service from their ***** site, removing ***** eyeballs from (*****) your revenue-generating ads?
*****. - landmonster, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Beautiful.
- Hydraulix, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Glad to see that Myspace is following the "oh snap" flowchart.
http://farm1.static.flickr.com/119/294168009_b25decaddf.jpg - mikestro, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Note, there's an update to the article which explains the specifics of what myspace was saying.
From the article:
"MySpace’s complaint centered around TellThem serving as a proxy for logging into people’s MySpace accounts. The concern is that services like this could be phishing sites collecting credentials for malicious use. Jason Cox, of TellThem said collecting the credentials was necessary because there is no API for accessing the messaging functionality they use. This was not the case for Jason’s last MySpace related startup, BuddyWave." - krelian, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1oscommerce, exactly what I am thinking about each time someone mentioned myspace....
- deadlift, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1You forgot to include yourself in that little comment of yours.
- deadlift, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Or shall I say:
I have made more than you will in your entire life (DCUK) so where does that put you? lols - johnpaul191, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1you really think facebook will be around in 10 years?
- stunna, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0I guess I was looking for a more technical explanation
- Parjoe, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0The difference is that on myspace they might actually get some traffic.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Boo to myspace, I was most upset about imeem however tho..***** bitches
- Jotacon, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0http://hs.facebook.com/group.php?gid=4957842996
- CleverGecko, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0while I think the "trailer park" comment is entirely appropriate, I can see why MySpace (owned by News Corp.) would not want a third party using its website and reducing the total possible ad views.
- sra8, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0MYSPACE is to social networks what
FOXNEWS is to news
