- Kino500, on 12/12/2007, -3/+9I'm very impressed with Movable Type 4. Good job, guys. Pat yourself on the back for a good 2007!
- TimmyGUNZ, on 12/12/2007, -3/+45Took long enough. Perhaps if they embraced this idea earlier, they could've taken a lot of share away from WordPress.
- rpgmaker, on 12/12/2007, -2/+4It's too late for them.
- markus941, on 12/12/2007, -2/+75I guess they finally realized why Wordpress has been eating them alive.
- Skitzzo, on 12/12/2007, -6/+37Too little, too late.
- rodrigomuniz, on 12/12/2007, -7/+37No thanks, I'm already with WordPress.
- centran, on 12/12/2007, -16/+13I'm sorry.
- ucg1, on 12/12/2007, -12/+4I haven't even run a site with Movable Type and I can guess that its a lot better than WordPress. I have tried running a site using WordPress and it was steaming pile of ***** that I'll never use again.
I feel sorry for all those people who switched from MT to WP. Maybe they'll switch back now? - SuperSloth, on 12/13/2007, -0/+1Good luck when you get more readership than yourself and your mom.
- jcaino, on 12/12/2007, -3/+50Digg for MT. MT is so much kinder to servers than WordPress is - the comparison between I/O and CPU usage is just ridiculous.
- rpgmaker, on 12/12/2007, -1/+4You have a point there..
- Rageous, on 12/12/2007, -0/+2Not including their comment forms, right?
- diabolicalMdog, on 12/12/2007, -1/+2it'd be nice to get some details, the thing that's linked has a lot of fluff
- alphex, on 12/12/2007, -12/+2In Soviet Russia, We OpenSource You! I'm curious to see how this shapes the blog market. But yeah... I'm on wordpress already.
- paperfrog, on 12/12/2007, -0/+19MT 4 is really good. Its ability to handle multiple sites rocks, and the Dashboard kicks WordPress to pieces. I wanted to adopt it when we started looking to replace our Joomla sites and standardize on a single platform. But the licensing costs were pretty steep for multi-author sites; only two out of the ten partner developers listed on the MT site returned my emails; and the bolt-on Community features were quoted to us at $15k. So we went with WordPress. Which is kind of a pity, because MT4 is worth a look. Probably too late for us, but free should make Movable Type a lot more attractive to the general community. Got a site to experiment with? Give it a spin. It's slick.
- norman619, on 12/12/2007, -13/+5Toilet Paper is open source as well. :-P
- TyCage, on 12/12/2007, -3/+18MT has always been open source, since the source was right there for you to look at. Now, however, it's going to be GPLed as well.
- eean, on 12/13/2007, -4/+2Just making the source available doesn't mean your open source. A term Microsoft coined that I like for having look-but-don't-touch code is 'shared source'.
- TyCage, on 12/13/2007, -0/+3I can agree to disagree, but I see "open source" as meaning the source is open, meaning not closed, meaning I can see it. It doesn't have to mean I can do anything I want to do with the source code, just that I have it at my disposal to view it.
I know a lot of free software people have tried to make the term open source mean the same thing as some sort of GPL ideal, but I just don't think the definition of the words holds up to that.

- rupric, on 12/12/2007, -17/+2Thank good maybe now I can do some more with my blog www.coptool.com which is in moveable type
- Duositex, on 12/12/2007, -13/+2"As of today, and forever forward, Movable Type is open source."
Open source you say? What the heck is that??
"This means you can freely modify, redistribute, and use Movable Type for any purpose you choose."
Oh wow! What a novel idea! - cdawzrd, on 12/12/2007, -11/+6Does anyone else think the font of the body text on that site looks like *****? What is going on here?
here: http://cdawzrd.com/pub/mt.jpg- reazal, on 12/12/2007, -0/+5Perhaps it has something to do with the font installed in your OS. This is from the stylesheet:
font-family: "Lucida Grande", "Lucida Sans", Verdana, sans-serif; - Darren05, on 12/12/2007, -1/+3Mine renders the same as cdawzrd and I have "Lucinda Sans" installed on Windows XP.
In firefox I have to increase the font size twice (ctrl +) to get it to render smooth, using firebug I set the font to Verdana and it is fine. - m3mn0n, on 12/13/2007, -1/+1Optimized for Mac :P

- vertice, on 12/12/2007, -4/+22It's still written in perl though.
- ucg1, on 12/12/2007, -12/+6Is that any worse than something being written in PHP?
- m3mn0n, on 12/13/2007, -1/+6Uh, yeah. PHP > all
- geekoid, on 12/13/2007, -1/+3You mean like Digg, for example? All PHP.
- ucg1, on 12/13/2007, -1/+1And Slashdot is written in Perl. Your point?
I guess I should asked "Is PHP that much better than Perl?"
- ucg1, on 12/13/2007, -1/+1And Slashdot is written in Perl. Your point?
- AQUANETA, on 12/13/2007, -3/+3print 'Everyone loves perl!!!n' or die 'a sad sad death'
- ucg1, on 12/12/2007, -12/+6Is that any worse than something being written in PHP?
- Oubipaws, on 12/12/2007, -5/+4It's at the point where it could make a difference, but it's not likely. Wordpress has already got a strong following, millions of users, and a steady growth stream. People like John Chow recommend it, so all of the "get rich quick" guys aren't going to just switch platforms.
Moveable Type is not a bad piece of software - it just needs alot and it needs it quickly. It's that simple. - idigit, on 12/12/2007, -6/+11The fact that it's Perl is a let down. I ran into all sorts of problems just trying to get it installed.
- stevesteverson, on 12/12/2007, -5/+4Ugh, PERL! I ran Movable Type way back when it was pretty much the only game in town, and it was great. I'm just not sure I'm ready to step back into the world of PERL. On the other hand, it's a very capable system and handles a load very well since it's writing static files. With that being said, it's still PERL. bleh
- curtistheory, on 12/12/2007, -1/+15This wasn't a gesture of good will it was a sign of desperation.
- stevesteverson, on 12/12/2007, -1/+8A day late and a dollar short, I agree it's not a great sign. The sad fact is that had it been GPL'd from the beginning they'd probably have a much better market share. At this point I doubt it's going result a big uptake, and I still think it's PERL roots are a hindrance.
- reazal, on 12/12/2007, -4/+0I still remember the day I tried to install MT 3. It was horrible! The official installation guide is so hard to understand.
- tommasz, on 12/12/2007, -0/+6MT bit me years ago when the Berkeley DB files got corrupted. Lost a year's worth of entries. My fault for not backing up, but still. Since I decided to go with MySQL as the backend and I had PHP, I decided to replace MT with Wordpress. I've never regretted it.
- ucg1, on 12/12/2007, -1/+2Who doesn't back up for a whole year? Oh yeah, you.
These days a lot of hosting companies will do backups for you. It's still good to save a dump of your database every so often.
- ucg1, on 12/12/2007, -1/+2Who doesn't back up for a whole year? Oh yeah, you.
- blizake, on 12/12/2007, -1/+7Thanks to WordPress.
- georgehuff, on 12/12/2007, -1/+3Although I have heard good things of MT4 - it's too little too late. They were opensource and then they weren't, and now they are again - they lost so much steam from closing the doors and it will be a few years before they get it back, if at all.
I'll stick with Wordpress - which has shown opensource dedication from the start.- m3mn0n, on 12/13/2007, -0/+1It had to, it's a fork of another project.
- underburn, on 12/12/2007, -10/+3Pearl? Are you ***** kidding me.
- idigit, on 12/12/2007, -1/+10It's spelled Perl, and no.
- rmeddy, on 12/13/2007, -1/+5Movable Type?! Don't tell the serfs!
- CanoeBuilder, on 12/13/2007, -0/+1Nice one, Gute!
- ltchimpo, on 12/13/2007, -5/+1The only people that are interested in this article will probably be rich someday, until then: NEEEERRRRDS!!!! jk, please don't send you army of robots after me... in twenty years.
- ravan46, on 12/13/2007, -0/+2You are not clever
- jetsetter883, on 12/13/2007, -4/+2are we officially digging up every story that has 'open source' in the title?
- saltinekracka20, on 12/13/2007, -2/+1Yeah, this article brought the weaksauce.
- saltinekracka20, on 12/13/2007, -1/+1I asked for tatar. This article brought weaksauce.
- designcode, on 12/13/2007, -2/+2Nice XMAS gift for open source lovers.
- spartan777, on 12/13/2007, -0/+1soylent green is man!
- MrViklund, on 12/13/2007, -0/+1GPL?
- flipme, on 12/13/2007, -1/+0It's still free only for personal use..
- geekoid, on 12/13/2007, -0/+3Incorrect. It's free for ANY use. Read the site.
"As of today, and forever forward, Movable Type is open source. This means you can freely modify, redistribute, and use Movable Type *for any purpose you choose*."
- geekoid, on 12/13/2007, -0/+3Incorrect. It's free for ANY use. Read the site.
- redwallhp, on 12/13/2007, -0/+3I don't use any Perl-based software. When they go PHP, then Six Apart will have a viable Wordpress competitor. Until then... Wordpress FTW!
- Pecnut, on 12/13/2007, -0/+2Am I the only person who didn't know what Movable Type is (and is then baffled by the website which doesn't explain either)?
- mhmdkhamis, on 01/31/2008, -0/+0The only people that are interested in this article will probably be rich someday, until then: NEEEERRRRDS!!!! jk, please don't send you army of robots after me... in twenty years.
