- matthijs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+69Please note that mininova.com will start working AFTER 10 days! So for now just use mininova.org
- Systembomber, on 10/12/2007, -4/+52Cool! Now I don't need to worry which domain I put in :P
- Boiler98, on 10/12/2007, -1/+47@rpgaction
This has nothing to do with "The Man" bringing down the little guy because of copyright or anything else remotely legally "gray". The "mininova.com" domain was a phishing scam, with people signing up thinking that they were dealing with the real (.org) company.
Please be careful about these things before insulting people. Sure, it's the Internet... but it is still bad form calling people hypocrites for no good reason. - Vladk1000, on 10/12/2007, -3/+40Welcome to the Intarwebs.
- koregaonpark, on 10/12/2007, -0/+28Haha, yeah. Don't want people rushing to the .com and making the scammer money before the transfer happens.
- skeeve, on 10/12/2007, -4/+24Torrenting and other p2p sharing systems are not "illegal file sharing" systems. That's like saying guns should be illegal because they kill people. Or cars should be illegal because you can use them to run people over. Or pencils should be illegal because you can stab people with them. Or trees should be illegal because you can cut them down and they can fall on people and kill them. Or golf clubs should be illegal because you can hit a golf ball and it can become lodged in the throat of the last male of a particularly endangered species of bird whose extinction would cause a particular species of bug to look to other species of bird to harvest their food from making that other species of bird flourish eventually blotting out the sun and causing the destruction of all mankind. So A) don't decry file sharing in any forum other than some RIAA supporters group because you are guaranteed to be flamed for it, and B) do a little more research into legal issues before you label anything "illegal".
- diulei, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21@rpgaction
Yes, but in this case the "little guy" didn't have a legitimate reason nor business for having that name. They were using the name to deliberately fool people into thinking they were someone else - and scam them.
This is different from someone who's surname is Nissan running a legitimate business under the name and registering Nissan.com. - Fire4Effect, on 10/12/2007, -5/+22The piracy is mightier than the sword.
- pcgeek101, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17Three cheers for one of the best torrent sites out there!
- durzagott, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14Suprnova was great at the time, but things have moved on now. If it was still up and running people would laugh at how basic it is. It's a bit like ex-girlfriends really - you can never go back.
- Hardcase, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Somehow there's either some delicious irony here or maybe some delicious hypocrisy. I'm just not sure which, but something about the situation makes me chuckle.
- Torbar203, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15@durzagott
I had a girlfriend once - m00kie, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Gosh, I love the irony in all of this.
People actually paying to access stolen products. And then not getting anything when they pay for it.
Yeah, good job guys. - civperc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12AWESOME, gg Mininova
- KarbonKopy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10ARRRRRR! way to go Mininova! Now only if we could bring back the mighty of all mighty....Suprnova.....
- Cglass, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Yea if you continue this inethicaliousness I will have to hit you over the head with a dictionary.
- Glauck006, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11only noobs were scammed, no loss if leechers are discouraged. How do you say to yourself "I'm going to get some free media, because torrents are free!" and then end up paying for it?
- IEatHamburgers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9@skeeve:
There should be an awards show for best run-on sentences, because you would be a top contender in the comedy category with that comment. - Neiby, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12Why is he stupid? I use the Internet practically all day every day, for work and for fun, and I had no idea what mininova was until now. I'd heard the name before but never bothered to figure out what it was.
I will be checking it out later tonight, though. :) - Adamacus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10"Or golf clubs should be illegal because you can hit a golf ball and it can become lodged in the throat of the last male of a particularly endangered species of bird whose extinction would cause a particular species of bug to look to other species of bird to harvest their food from making that other species of bird flourish eventually blotting out the sun and causing the destruction of all mankind."

I'm not sure what situation you were talking about exactly but back then, it was probably reasonable for that little guy to have that domain. This scammer, on the other hand, registered mininova.com knowing that the site's popularity would draw many unsuspecting victims to him. FFS, he charged them money and when they tried to log in, they got redirected to .org. Say what you want but this is a clear case of malicious domain squatting and I see no hypocrisy in it.
And didn't something similar happen to suprnova back in the day? - dbalaski, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Well -- I feel good cause justice prevailed
- DigitalJester, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Finally! I always put .com without thinking about it.
- cbreaker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Your sister doesn't count.
- elnerdo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Not all torrents are illegal. Torrenting is just another way of downloading a file which cuts out the server.
- IEatHamburgers, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Every time I go to isohunt.com I always put in .org thinking that "No, .com can't be it, that'll probably be some phishing site." I always get it wrong.
I'm converted to thepiratebay now, however. - Cglass, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I think that one doctor should take his right nut :)
- cbreaker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@bonch: At least you didn't say "theft." That's a step in the right direction!
- AnotherThought, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I think the scammer should be fined also.
- themastersb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I think Torrentspy has a similar problem. There's a website really similar to its domain and then it looks like a duplicate website except they try charging money.
- cbreaker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@scyth: I know - people just can't seem to get that through their heads. I have a really good ratio on Demonoid, and I've uploaded many more gigabytes then some people that have uploaded 20 torrents. I've never uploaded one! I do my part by seeding others. Why should that make me a leech?
- beers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i hate squatters. seen way to many of those damned vanilla portals.
- Spampy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If you did .com i believe there was a phishing site there.
- Uranium118, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Private trackers FTW!
- iMyst, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I don't know about you all, but I used it for unlicensed anime.
- FongoBongo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@rpgaction
judging by your post...you sound like one of the morons that fell for the scam...you dumb twot - fatdog789, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Actually...torrenting is not an illegal filesharing system. P2P systems in general, however, are illegal filesharing systems because they're designed and promoted for those purposes.
The difference with bittorrent is that from the beginning, it was used to distribute legitimate stuff (like Linux distros, etc), before the pirates discovered how useful it was and added it to their tool bag. - Floris, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Great news, the less scammers in the world the better.
- tastypastry, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Because .com's are scams
I forgot which torrent site said that. I think Suprnova - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa i say "gg mininova" and i dont know what "gg" means yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
- ravencin, on 12/25/2007, -0/+0mininova wont fall http://torrentsmininova.com
- emrikol, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Bah, ***** suprnova, I want bytemonsoon back! It was much better!
- burrier, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Finally it's working. Mininova.com is redirecting to mininova.org now. And info in whois database is changed too: http://whois.blokovi.com/index.php?query=mininova.com
- LukeEsntlPdx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I'm surprised there is a judge out there who would actually look at this case and say: "Right, so you're a website facilitating illegal filesharing of copyrighted content and you're trying to bring a case against another site doing the same thing?", and then actually waste any more time with it.
It is all quite ironic. At the end of the day, both these sites were going to be shut down eventually anyway, so what does it matter? - JCGV, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That's one thing I don't understand. If you're going to pirate, why the hell would still want to pay money? Isn't the whole idea behind pirating that you're to cheap to buy the stuff?
- cbreaker, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1forget miniwhatever. It's all about demonoid.
- 1smartguy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Takes down? He's down? When he's arrested, forced to pay restitution, jailed, put on probation where he is allowed no contact with a computer, then you can rejoice. For the scammer, it,s on to the next scam.
- ObSoLeTe, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1self pwnt
- tobikow, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2anyone remember suprnova? what happened if you put supernova? was a phishing site there?
