Microsoft to sponsor the Apache Software Foundation—really!

arstechnica.com — The Apache Software Foundation has announced that Microsoft will sponsor the project and will help to fund development. The move could bring about greater interoperability between Microsoft technologies and the Apache ecosystem.

    I've never had to configure IIS, but Apache can get complicated if you want do some of the fancier stuff. So assuming IIS is simple to run for common configurations, then it may very well survive.

    These days, if you want to sell a server-class O.S., you better be able to run Apache and do it well.

    IBM used to have its own http server for AIX. That http server now *IS* Apache. AIX might be long dead if it wasn't for its ability to run Appache.

  • valadares, on 07/25/2008, -5/+4In a surprise move earlier today Microsoft announced that former "Microsoft Bob" team will be the first to join the Apache Software Foundation as part of the agreement. Later Microsoft published it's interests in supporting Canonical Ltd. to develop the Ubuntu Desktop Management for Linux. The press release also reveals that it has already told former "Windows ME" programmers to pack because they'll have to move to Europe.
