Google should've gone with facebook rather than myspace. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24People forget that Yahoo tried for a while to sell ads on myspace, but quickly found out from their advertisers that the conversion rate was near zero. Those 13 year old kids may be online and hanging out, but they don't have credit cards. So yahoo dropped out.
Now Google pays a billion dollars to myspace to try the same thing.
This is a good deal for MSFT because college kids and graduates on facebook actually have credit cards, and money, and they certainly have more of a brain than the myspace crowd. More attractive to advertisers by far.
I think Google wasted a ton of money on something that isn't going to return any profit. - nmckinlay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13"This is a good deal for MSFT because college kids and graduates on facebook actually have credit cards, and money, and they certainly have more of a brain than the myspace crowd. Was thinking the same thing myself... especially as a facebook user. - mecole21, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13its got 2 of the key Digg words Microsoft & Facebook... now all it needs is Daily Show, Colbert Report, Sony, Nintendo, Firefox, Myspace, Apple and it will be the alltime most dugg article...
- NJank, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10sorry. closed group. you're an outsider. (8^P) thbbbbtt!!
- nmckinlay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Oh but of course when Google took over MySpaces' advertising, they weren't "copying" Yahoo..?
On a side note... who takes care of the ads on Friendster? - fightzero01, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10#1 the facebook team care about the end user experience a little more than myspace, so don't expect anything too annoying.
#2 it won't be advertisements for m$ products/services... it will be targetted ads. - tazamore, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I'm not a fan of MSFT but I have to say "well played, Microsoft". Google's only revenue source is online advertising. When Microsoft steals away major chunks of online ad space it shakes the confidence of Google shareholders. It's hard for Microsoft to make a better serach engine than Google but a lot easier to limit Google's sources of revenue.
- ceoandpresident, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10Blue chip Company name + Social Networking website = Digg story
- miles01110, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Well, along the same lines....it doesn't "benefit" me to know that the Poincare conjecture has been solved, but I still am interested to know. Isn't that the nature of the news?
- nmckinlay, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9I'm sure I'm not alone in finding this information interesting, to say the least. It is definitely not the same as "charmin buying ad time on ABC"... it's Microsoft taking responsibility of all ads that will be put on one of the largest social networking websites with probably the potential for the highest click-through conversion rates of all the networking sites.
Dugg. - nmckinlay, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Apple's already got quite a fair bit of ads and branding on facebook... not to mention millions of free iTune music store downloads that are going out to the Facebook crowd in 25-pack samplers per week.
- joel.smith, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Exactly.. Look at Google Spreadsheet, look at their fight for AOL, look at their mailbox capacities... it's amazing.
- joshfraz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5microsoft definitely is getting the better deal here. if for no other reason, facebook has a lot more vision than myspace.
- Popdmb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Microsoft and Google both put down huge investments on social networks. While I'm sure willynilly has 900 million dollars lying around the house (and judging from the comment...his parent's house), a few other people might see this as news. Microsoft's amount paid to a better social network was undisclosed, Google's amount paid to a crappy social network is almost a billion dollars.
If Microsoft got away with paying less for Facebook, they made out like bandits. This is why it's news. Great comment though...you really added something to the discussion. - Deemo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Actually, you can create a facebook account for High School, College, or even Work. Ive also seen people on it without any network so i assume that you can just make an account and friend people like in myspace, but im not completely sure. Have you tried signing up recently?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I think adbrite does the ads on friendster.
But adbrite's ads are basically 100% porn/pill/casinos. You can tell how far Friendster has fallen when they have to resort to Adbrite ads. (adbrite is the text ad company started by the guy who started *****.com- just shows you that EVERYONE is trying to cash in on the text ad business) - nmckinlay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@Odiwan
You need an email address for a current network... try your corporate email, or if you still have access to your old @college.edu email address you can get on as an alumni... other than that, you're SOL - even if you want to join a high school network I'm pretty sure you need to be "invited" from someone already in the network. - mhockey14221, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yeah, thats part of the allure of facebook, its clean, seemingly private nature of it.
- Escamillo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@razei
Do you really care who provides the ads to the sites that you visit? I mean, really, who cares? Ads are ads, regardless of who provides them. - mecole21, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3As long as the ads stay like they are on facebook and not get annoying, huge, or obnoxious then i really dont care who takes care of the ads for facebook...
- inactive, on 12/26/2008, -3/+5You forgot about Ubuntu :)
- IQ70, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Apple can buy Microsoft and Google ads.
- Agret, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3"It's only a matter of time before one of them mimic what the other is doing."
Just look at MSN search.... - riah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Is anyone else not seeing the comment digging buttons? Weird... and it's only happening on this story for me.
- Nocturnal, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Seems logical. Go with the next best thing. I'm sure Microsoft's marketing division is kicking themselves for not taking a chance with MySpace earlier.
- christiancadeo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1and google.
- MOGua, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1but Google chose MySpace...
Maybe you can show your hatred for MS by ditching Facebook and show your Google love by getting your space on MySpace? - deggiweg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1thank you to the creator of adblock
- Odiwan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Yeah, I've been out of college too long, and the company I work for does not have a network. I guess I'll spend my time elsewhere.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1No, sworoc, it doesn't matter in the very least whether ms or google does the adverts. I'm sorry, but it doesn't.
I like this article because I suppose it's good to know who is running the advertising at my favorite sites, but at the same time, your experience at the site WILL NOT change as a result, so hop off the google love fest and just accept it. - mikew101, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1This just in: The colbert report mocks the daily show on a new feature created by apple which will soon be copied by microsoft, only displayable in firefox which shows which alerts you on new gaming news for nintendo, sony, and the xbox. In other news Steve Colbert also makes fun of linux users by talking about ubuntu's name.
Theres my story with all of the digg faves - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Why does everyone seem to be confused by the concept of Microsoft PROVIDING the adverts and Google PROVIDING adverts. Do you really think Myspace will be full of _google_ ads now that they signed a deal? No you don't, it's the same concept people. It's ok, Microsoft won't be ruining your internet experience.
- AJ4289, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0[pirate] *Arrr, the BlackBerry Pearl* [/pirate]
- sworoc, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1No, it really sucks because I'd rather Google have that business, not Microsoft, although I suppose Google is approaching their monopoly status..... until both are the same size
- Amidnightsunset, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Normally there are a lot of Apple ads on Facebook, I wonder if this will change at all.
- sworoc, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1That really sucks.
- rej1587, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3I'd prefer seeing more Apple ads, seeing as more college students are starting to be impressed by the Macbook.
- joel.smith, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2I swear it's monkey-see-monkey-do with Google and Microsoft. It's only a matter of time before one of them mimic what the other is doing.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1What would be the usefulness of a Crapple laptop in the academic environment?
- CaptainOats, on 10/12/2007, -6/+0This is going to suck. Now facebook will be full of ads like myspace. And they will be putting so much crap about vista and MSN. What has the world come to. You can't do anything on the internet without running into a thousand ads.
- zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -10/+1Someone does something. Microsoft copies it as usual.
News? No. - spengy, on 10/12/2007, -14/+3Agreed - marked as lame.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -19/+6Why are people digging this? Who gives a *****? It doesn't BENEFIT you to know about it. It doesn't benefit you to use it. It doesn't benefit you to see it.
In other news, Charmin buys ad time on ABC, featuring bears ***** in the woods. - Odiwan, on 10/12/2007, -19/+1I'm sick and tired of hearing about Facebook. What do I have to do to see what this damn thing is about? Go back to college or something?!
If someone can tell me how to get access to an email address that Facebook accepts, that would be great.
Screenshots don't cut it for me.
