- atdigg, on 10/12/2007, -31/+177They should sell with K-Fed album preinstalled since they probably appeal to the same segment of the market.
- pype, on 10/12/2007, -25/+109And by shopping there, so were you.
- RuffRidr, on 10/12/2007, -7/+82The ones I saw in the local Walmart didn't appear to be garnering a whole lot of attention. Whereas there were people over in the iPod and iPod accessory sections. It might be because of product placement. They had the Zunes in the same cabinet as all of the "other" MP3 players.
- steelmaverick, on 10/12/2007, -10/+82I was gonna buy a Zune until I heard that you can't use it as a removable drive. Screw that.
- dmoney22, on 10/12/2007, -20/+74...of the 3 they had?
- waterdrop, on 10/12/2007, -0/+39It helps to have a Mac lab when your the second largest (MS) seller of software for the Macintosh platform.
- AminoSC, on 10/12/2007, -17/+52Our wal-mart sold out too.
- DocChaos, on 10/12/2007, -6/+40Geeks, or people in general have two other things they are going to, or going to try to buy in the next 5 days. A Wii or a PS3.
Not that a Zune is a game system, but it is another tech device.
Most of the market that MIGHT buy a Zune, has their money allocated elsewhere.
Maybe those that can't get a PS3, and don't want a Wii, will buy a Zune and a 360... HA. - lefolly, on 10/12/2007, -8/+41Maybe those of us using Vista would care.
And even that cheap mp3 player I got when I signed up for Napster can be used as a thumb drive, come on Microsoft. - o0joshua0o, on 10/12/2007, -1/+31You accidentally called the PSP successful.
- cbiz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+30I am in an out of computer stores all the time. I have asked about Zune a few times and have gotten blank stares. I ask all of you, if the sales force is not even casually aware of the product how the heck is a holiday gift shopper suppose to know about it. If it is a good product it's to bad the consumer is going to have to find out on his own. Sounds like a very bad job on MS's part at store level.
- Chromain, on 10/12/2007, -12/+41This story lacks Wii information.
- Frankie4Fingers, on 10/12/2007, -1/+28There isn't too much demand because most people that want a MP3/Video player either have Creative, i-River, Archos, Apple, PSP, phone or other device that already does it all.
This just isn't a great time to come out with such a device. - joerodriguez, on 10/12/2007, -12/+38I think I may have seen one today at Walmart right before I bought an iPod...
- michaelvaf, on 10/12/2007, -34/+58vista isnt even out yet buddy... who cares
- Brereton55, on 10/12/2007, -26/+50my walmart was sold out....
- cbiz, on 10/12/2007, -3/+22This could be a bigger bomb than origami and that is saying something.
- FishyJoe, on 10/12/2007, -8/+26Cramer pretty much summed it up. Too big to easily fit in pocket. Ugly colors. Bad online store.

"you can't swing a cat without hitting many decent player options"
Not true... I just hit my desklamp. And my cat looks pissed. - ricodued, on 10/12/2007, -8/+25vwbiped42:
Actually, Microsoft has a whole lab full of Macs. Probably several.
The more you know :) - MeatBiProduct, on 10/12/2007, -4/+20you beat me to it - can't buy a zune, have to buy a wii + games + controllers etc. etc.
and some people have to stand in line for a PS3 they wont get haha. - icexe, on 10/12/2007, -12/+28in all fairness though, how well did the iPod sell on it's first day?
its way too early to call Zune a disaster just yet, though I won't be rushing out to buy one..or anyone else i know for that matter. - waterdrop, on 10/12/2007, -4/+19I was gonna get a Zune, but Im getting a Xbox 360 instead. And this way I can wait for Zune generation 2. And then my 3rd Gen iPod and 2nd Gen Zune can have a little battle.
- rasterbator, on 10/12/2007, -7/+22I think the point of the story is no lines, no interest.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+19It's a "good product" because it was the first one received by the public. You'd be saying the same thing of the Zune or Zen had it been the first.
Note, Apple didn't create the mobile MP3 market. They copied and improved with pride. MS pulls the same tactic and because they weren't the "first" to come up with a brilliant marketing campaign (that's what keeps the iPod afloat), they are labeled as idiots.
Reading these iPod vs. Zune wars on Digg keeps me entertained during the day at least. - jrbrewin, on 10/12/2007, -36/+50how odd. the person posting bad news about a company he doesn't like has an apple logo for his avatar. what a freaking surprise.
- spiffyman, on 10/12/2007, -10/+24The original iPod went on sale Nov 11, 2001. It was almost impossible to buy one that day, however, because of demand and Apple's notorious inability to ship new products in quantity.
They have improved on that count over the years, but I remember the days when Apple literally had a billion dollars worth of product on backorder.
It doesn't look like M$ will be having inventory problems with the Zune. - terrya64, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17I see nothing wrong with first day sale, how many people have even heard of the Zune, It's not like Microsoft has been heavily advertising it. I seen one ad and that was in a movie theater. When I mentioned the Zune a few days to a some coworkers they had no idea it even existed.
- n00bst3r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11When I went to buy a Zune at my local BestBuy at 10:30am, the lady that has the keys to the cabinet said that they had sold about 15 or so of them already. When she opend the cabinet it looked like they had close to 100 in stock, and a couple of the boxes were empty.
- superkendall, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10You cna't with wireless, that's why people are annoyed - if you are a band and cut an MP3, you can't "squirt" that to someone with a Zune and then have them "squirt" that to other people. It turns what could be a cool viral effect into, well, nothing.
And since you can't mount a Zune as portable storage you can't just copy a song to a Zune and then copy it onto another computer. It's hard to do with the iPod (the names are all mangled) but you can do it with the right software. - Baloo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12oh come on...
PS3 sold out day 1 in Japan..
will do same in the US
likewise the Wii will sell out too...
remember Win95 release... people lined up down the street to get a copy...
sure it is long term that counts... but the buzz for Zune is that it sux.
see CNN video clip.
see Vista install crash posts
see engadget "successful" install post...
the zune is full of problems... it is really a gen 1 product. Same money buys an iPod and access to all the goodness that comes with it... (hell ever airlines are getting on board)...
doubt we will see airline connectors for the zune anytime soon. - pfunked, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10"To the general public, Zune=failure because Microsoft=DRM...."
To the general public, DRM=blank stare. - Exec, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13The danger the Zune poses to Apple and the Ipod is not with the hardware itself. The Zune player does not offer MS a decisive advantage over an Ipod. However Microsoft deals with record labels pose a far bigger danger. Every Zune player sold gives a percentage of the money from the sale to the record labels and the next time said labels go to re-negotiate their contract with Apple they may very well demand similar treatment, this in turn sets a terrible precedent. That alone is a big reason why people should stay away from the Zune.
- Coffeedemon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9The iPod came out at a time when good MP3 players were hard to come by. Nowadays you can't swing a cat without hitting many decent player options.
Many people have their money tied up in other players and won't/can't just switch on a whim. My player works just fine, has 5 GB which is enough for now - plus its just 'comfortable' I guess. The possibility of video playback and a large storage area for memory card dumps from my camera is going to make me move on eventually. I figure I'll hold off till the current one's battery gives out and by that time there will be even crazier ***** available. Theres probably a lot like me out there. - rjbeeswax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I don't see what all the fuss is about.
I'm all for more competition in the mp3 player dept... blind obedience/ brand loyalty is for suckers
I hope Zune does well and pushes apple and vice-versa - EtherGnat, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11The iPod has plenty of DRM, so I'm not sure what your point is.
- piratearggghhh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I'm going to wait for a 2nd gen version so they can work out all the kinks and hopefully make them thinner (or maybe get the next version ipod). It does have a lot to offer but it's an MP3/video player, not exactly a hot item that people line up overnight for. I don't even think the ipod is all that great either - more slick marketing and apple loyalists than anything else.
- drlha, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10A good thing, I think. Aparently a bunch of bearded hobos are supposed to make you want a Zune. You probably want it more having not seen the ads.
- gregdigg, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11@ TreeNinja
"I didn't even know about the iPod until it's third generation, and I'm rather tech savvy and consider myself to be on the cutting edge of technology"
Sounds like it. - joel8x, on 10/12/2007, -8/+15I was at Target tonight and the Zunes were on an end-cap. I played around with it for a minute and I was very impressed with the interface, but from what I've read, the software experience is lousy, and lets face it - who wants to switch to a player that only works with PC's? At least I can take my iPod to different machines and different platforms (well, 2 at least). Its too bad they only got half the equation correct.
- pabster, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9I don't believe the target audience has a clue about DRM.
- drlha, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Yeah, WTF? iPods, every "Plays for Sure" and the Zune all have DRM, and can all play un-DRMed music as well.
- drlha, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10The PSP hasn't been successful at being a hybrid though, only as a games console. UMD sales are crap, nobody in their right mind would carry it around as an MP3 player and the web browser is of limited usefulness.
- OdinEye, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9@vegasmacguy
"The Zune has a larger screen, wireless sharing, FM receiver, plus a pretty decent interface. The iPod can do better but Apple's gotten lazy. They don't feel they should update because they're still selling. Now that there's some competition in the marketplace maybe Apple will pick up the pace and bring out some kick-ass features to hold their market share."
I'll give you the larger screen, but the FM receiver is probably going to be a bust outside of the gym (and there are better answers for that) and very heavily populated urban areas with signal saturation. As for the wireless sharing, this is a gimmick looking for a use. Since it seems only to share with other Zunes, it's going to seem pretty useless most of the time - likely to be something that people think are really cool for a few minutes, and then they pretty much completely forget about.
There's been considerable competition in the marketplace for some time. The Zune is just another player, and time will tell if anyone salutes the flag they've raised. - brstilson, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Yeah because iTunes has no DRM, and that's why everyone wants the iPod.
/idiot - sophiaperennis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7The Zune Black is currently at #13 on the Amazon Electronics Bestsellers' List. Zune Brown is located at #56, and the Zune White at #89.
- cyberghost232, on 10/12/2007, -6/+12To little. To Late. Yes the Wal-Mart near my house sold out. Both of them were gone in hours. If Apple ever releases a wide screen Ipod I know they have my money. Nothing against Microsoft, but the Ipod is just a damn good product.
- escheppa, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Well the difference is that there was no ipod type device that owned the market when it was introduce since it was so young, whereas the zune is coming in a little late and with a lot more competition.
- Bootes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I went to Target today to play with the PS3. I looked at the Zune for a second, it seems ok. I actually thought the interface looked worse in person than from what I had seen in videos, and that was the only thing I liked about it.
- brstilson, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9"(that's what keeps the iPod afloat)"
That and the fact that when it's all said and done, the iPod is a good product, is high quality, and (this is important to people) looks good. Nothing on the market matches the style of the iPod. The 5th gen made thick & bulky a thing of the past, yet it's still the styling that all the competitors use.
People look at a sleek, sexy iPod next to a big, thick, bulky Zune or Zen and automatically think the iPod is more advanced. It's smaller, and offers the most storage space for its size. Sure it doesn't have the radio feature, but honestly, why would you want to listen to the RADIO when you have your music library with you? When I'm jogging I don't HAVE to listen to the traffic & weather report, that's what my CAR radio is for. -
