oh no, not another (insert popular product name here)-killer - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+97Only work with IE. Not going anywhere.
- Hydraulix, on 10/12/2007, -9/+973d view doesn't work in Firefox. It's a killer alright. Just killed five minutes of my precious time.
"To use this feature, open Live Local Search in Windows Internet Explorer version 6 or 7. For more information, and to download the latest version, visit the Microsoft Internet Explorer website (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downloads/default.mspx)." - swOhio, on 10/12/2007, -48/+128Marked as inaccurate
Microsoft isn't killing anything Google. - pufuwozu, on 10/12/2007, -7/+78I'd rather something that is multi-platform and doesn't require IE to run, Google Earth.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+54When I saw the title, for some reason I thought of the Death Star.
- pixelsoup, on 10/12/2007, -4/+44@averyd…
no amount of alcohol would get me to try such a thing ;) - meatshoes, on 10/12/2007, -7/+43Some of it is semi-awesome... certainly no Google Earth "killer" though.
The giant, floating, popup causing advertising billboards are the best feature without a doubt. - tutivlahos, on 10/12/2007, -2/+35Well I dont want to create them, neither download one-by-one. I want them there!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -10/+41DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS!!!!!!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -17/+45The only thing Microsoft will kill is more chairs
- szembek, on 10/12/2007, -5/+32Why did all of you fools reply to "Awesome!" instead of just making a new topic? Only click the [reply] link if you have something to say relevant to the post you are replying to, not just to show up at the beginning of the comment list.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+24Articles with the word "killer" in their title should automatically be denied posting. This ***** is becoming a real nuisance.
- tutivlahos, on 10/12/2007, -9/+25I like those 3d models with textures. I think that this is the only thing missing on Google Earth.
- dmr0240, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16Yeah, but it's not like Google came up with 3D satellite viewing software either. Remember a program called Keyhole? That was the original, which Google bought, improved, and renamed Google Earth.
- martalli, on 10/12/2007, -5/+20I know I'm a horribly small minority, but it looks like crap on kubuntu/konquerer. Google maps is just fine.
- binarymelon, on 10/12/2007, -4/+19When convicted Microsoft had this to say, "I don't know what happened, our operating system should have deleted any evidence against us"
In other news, the Police station in charge of the investigation against Microsoft, switches to Linux. - roosterjm2k2, on 10/12/2007, -6/+21Dude, it uses directx for its rendering. It has to be an active-x control to do that. It has to be MSIE to use an active-x control. Thats probably why you will never see a google-earth online.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+18Next up: Microsoft tried for attempted murder of Google.
- Agret, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Microsoft aren't the ones who fail this time, it's the submitter who labelled it a killer.
- toomuchgreentea, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13I love these reviewers ... majority of the products that got their "wows" turned out to be duds.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -13/+24Google maps is the best... tru dat, double tru
- emilbp, on 10/12/2007, -8/+18Not impressed
You can't install the 3D plugin on a danish windows installation. Try again MS - shakin, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14"Dude, it uses directx for its rendering. It has to be an active-x control to do that. It has to be MSIE to use an active-x control. Thats probably why you will never see a google-earth online."
I guess you've never heard of Shockwave, which does 3D using OpenGL. There are actually quite a few cross-platform 3D browser plugins, though most are rarely used. - mzwaterski, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10I agree. It was very nice to zoom in on Chicago and see the actual sears tower. I hope they add more buildings though.
Sucks that everyone without IE has to miss out.
Its nice that this discussion is filled with people who haven't even tried it yet saying how much it isn't worth it. - rauz, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13So when will somebody launch a [product]-killer-meme-killer?
- Agret, on 10/12/2007, -12/+21Those 3D models with textures are in fact on Google Earth
http://sketchup.google.com/
They've been out for ages!! - Grimdotdotdot, on 10/12/2007, -7/+15'Predicting' that people will Digg you down doesn't make you look cool. Just in case you hadn't realised.
- klawz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9you people are ignorant, why can't you spend 5 seconds to research something before spewing off ***** from your mouth that makes you look stupid? - MS had Terra-server, long before Google was a twinkle in someone's eye.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+15I prefer to call them "me too" products. Microsoft isn't "killing" anything.
- szembek, on 10/12/2007, -7/+15Google earth is not web based. It must be installed on your PC to work. Apples and oranges my friend.
- Darcy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Can someone please post a link to where Microsoft said this was a 'Google earth killer' or where they say the Zune is an iPod killer. I don't see what you guys are getting so angry about, they are just adding more functionality and features to their local.live service, they haven't said anything about killing Google earth or anything else. Personally I think they both do a great job and there's plenty of room for them both to exist together.
I don't even know why this is being compared with google earth anyway. Google earth is a client app and this is a web service using managed Direct X. Don't you think it's a bit unfair to compair them as though they are the same thing.
Here are a couple of videos if anyones interested:

http://www.on10.net/Blogs/laura/virtual-earth-3d-the-next-dimension-in-search-well-at-least-the-third-dimension-/#comments - Eccles, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I used Google Earth two days ago to find all the restaurants near the house of someone I was going to meet up with. I put placemarks for various important places in my life, and select them to get driving directions, timing estimates, etc. I've checked out attractions near places I'm visiting on vacation. I suppose I could do much or all of this with Google Maps, but I've found the separate app more convenient.
So yes, people do use Google Earth for more than a brief "ooh..." - jefferson, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11found not guilty didnt have the means or opputinity or mental capacity
- spafbnerf, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11Yes, you can run IE7 under wine: http://www.tatanka.com.br/ies4linux/news/
- szembek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Windows 95? I'm pretty sure that one fit the bill of "killer".
- szembek, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7For finding restaurants why not just use maps.google.com? Quicker to load, quicker to run, etc... I installed earth, scrolled around a bit. Then I uninstalled it.
- Tripcast, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Well, not really an app-killer, but certainly M$ have higher res maps of some areas that Google doesn't (like my street)
- mrmcgoo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7ha, Microsoft Deathstar to take on Google Earth.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Google AdSense copied Overture
Facebook copied MySpace
Google tries to copy PayPal
Yahoo tried to copy Ebay
Google copied AltaVista
etc. etc.
So what?
Competition is always good. - Grimdotdotdot, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8What models exist on Google Earth for the UK? I can't find any in London, but Virtual Earth has a few, at least.
- naich, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9If you are a UK resident then please don't say "sucks ass" - we aren't American.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I like Microsoft.
You Microsoft bashing sheeps are so boring. - dougbdl, on 10/12/2007, -10/+14Is MS ever going to come up with a product of their own or are they just going to continue to use their monopoly to 'steal' others ideas.
- griz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5 "However, don't expect too many people to create Virtual Earth mash-ups, since the service works only in Internet Explorer."
I know no one "should" be using IE, but I hardly doubt that this will be a small userbase. - MasterDwarf, on 10/12/2007, -7/+11Yet another innovation brought to you by MS.
/sarcasm - noseeme, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Oh come on people, this submitter is just using the title the Cnet writer used. It's not always worth digging down a story because the title is extremely stupid.
- tinkafoo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5CAUTION: web-based and proprietary.
Weird, I thought those were mutually exclusive?.. - archiesteel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Some of us are curious about our world and want to learn more about it. Why would you buy, say, a globe or a world map? I don't know, maybe that's because I'm outside the U.S... :-P
Seriously, as a writer on a budget I find it's an invaluable tool to "get a feel of the land" without actually going there.
It's also great to see where you're going before a trip. - neave, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I really like this. It's the future, it's 3D in your browser and seemlessly integrates into the rest of the 'Windows Live Maps' features.
I'm not surprised most diggers don't find this appealing, namely because Microsoft made it. If Google had done this, you'd all be falling over yourselves to praise it. Most typical users (such as your parents, for example) will not be able to discern the difference between Google Earth and Live Maps eventually. It's like the Mac vs Windows debate with Google vs Microsoft. Microsoft have won the home computer battle, but everyone is rooting for the (perhaps better) underdogs. Dismiss Microsoft/Vista/3D at your peril!
And don't forget this is only just launched, version 1, so there will be bugs and teething problems. They have some catching up to do with Google Earth (Keyhole) which has been around for several years now. Just wait and see... -
