- rrobster, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Just open any folder, choose 'tools/folder options' then under 'general' select 'single click to open.' HA! foiled again Micro$oft!
- rtfmky, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4single click, double click, right click, Windows still doesn't click.
- geoboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I had better patent the triple click before Microsoft gets to it!
- bogll, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If you click on the source link...you will see its says "as the patent only applies to handheld computers that run Microsoft's PocketPC software," and "The New York-based Public Patent Foundation, meanwhile, has filed a formal request with the US Patent and Trademark Office, asking that Microsoft's patent on this file system be revoked as such patents can impeded progress by preventing competitors from improving on them."

- SpaceCow!, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2have they patented ctrl-alt-de yet cyz i know by far that is the most used.
- Zivko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"However, mouse-wielding computer users need not worry, as the patent only applies to handheld computers that run Microsoft's PocketPC software, especially the method of bringing up different features depending on how many times a button is pressed."
Not only is this article old, but it's misleading, Microsoft didn't get the patent to the double-click on a computer within the OS, it related to their PocketPC software.
So it's a misleading article, misleading Digg.
No Digg. - stickyboot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow, discusting. Patenting is so weird in the US, i dont get it.
- BugMeNot2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm going to patent walking!!!
I'm going to file soooo many lawsuits! - bouche, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1no-click. that is the future.
still, I heard that apples mouse has a mini speaker (like the iPod?) that makes a click sound. Steve should get on the bandwagon and patent the 'click' sound. If not, I will. - Lynxpro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If Apple or Xerox didn't invent the "double click," then it was Atari and Digital Research Inc. who did because double clicking was standard on the Atari ST via the GEM Desktop GUI back in 1985.
Anyone know offhand how grassroots people can challenge an issued patent? I feel like mailing my Atari ST manual to those frakkers. - bogll, on 10/12/2007, -0/+140 something people before my post 4 after doesnt anybody check the sources before they post?

They might as well file a patent for double tapping a single fire button on joysticks/joypads to advance beyond start-up screens to load the actual videogame on consoles such as the Xbox. - gunbuster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1WTF...
I didn't want to believe it, so I looked it up in the USPTO...
"A method and system are provided for extending the functionality of application buttons on a limited resource computing device. Alternative application functions are launched based on the length of time an application button is pressed. A default function for an application is launched if the button is pressed for a short, i.e., normal, period of time. An alternative function of the application is launched if the button is pressed for a long, (e.g., at least one second), period of time. Still another function can be launched if the application button is pressed multiple times within a short period of time, e.g., double click." - wai_xing_ren, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Nintendo has patented "press A to jump" and the "start" button. All other console manufacturers must now pay royalties.
- skeenan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1wow, it's hilarious to see a legal document trying to describe what double-clicking does. Micro$oft sux. What now? Sue all the opensource WM devs that allow users to double-click?
- lollerskates, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hey guys, I've patented yellow-colored posts. You better watch out, digg, I might sue you and take part of your profits annually!
"A post, i.e. a submission to a message board, in the color of yellow, shade 1772." - JetwingX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1READ THE WHOLE ***** PATENT PEOPLE
"BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
Small, mobile computing devices, such as personal desktop assistants including hand-held and palm-type computers" - Agret, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"was granted on April 27"
The damn description crys old news. This is so damn old. Please don't do it again. - tehLazyPirate, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2From the Article: "6/2/2004 5:28:50 PM"
As stated above, someone is a year late to the party... - Weebj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The patent ls for handheld devices and cell phones.

- Seaton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I look at this and see wasted money and time. If Microsoft would spend more time and money in the R&D department and less in the legal department, we might see Longhorn/Vista before 2007. Microsoft claims to be innovators, they are petty theives. The more ridiculous patents they file, the more petty they are.
Well at least I know the $400.00 I spent on Office buys only the BEST patent lawyers! - OrangeJai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Calm down everyone. This is purely a vanity patent and nothing further will come of it.
- zenghost, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0jeez...theyre trying to patent everything...they should patent the wheel...just for ***** and giggles...
- Gills, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0like any of it matters. i just patented electricity and have decided that no one can use it without my express permission. so if u would cease and desist using ur computers immediately to avoid any further action
- jerkhaircut, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So what does this mean for the computer industry? Does Microsoft get a nickel every time somebody double clicks?
- FRAGaLOT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The first GUI was created by XEROX. I would assume the first "Double click" was created by Xerox, but I'm not totally sure about that. Considering the MAC GUI came about long before MS created anything that used a mouse, my assumption is that Apple invented the double click to launch applications. But that doesn't mean they automaticaly own it.
- 4z4z3l, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0f! M$ and im gonna to patent this post :)
- Kashey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"especially the method of bringing up different features depending on how many times a button is pressed"
My Denon CD decks as well as my Tascam DJ mixer have many buttons that depends on how many times you press them or hold them give you different options. Dj players and mixer do have their own software. So they are computers.! so it means royalty fees to Micisoft.? - brainache, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah this only actually applies to double-click on "limited resource computing devices" - that being PDAs and Mobile Phones. I guess. Anyway, i wouldnt panic yet.

However, i am currently glad that EU balked and threw out Software Patenting in Europe. It truly is anti-competative. - disturbedgeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I just put a patent on farts so no one better be farting or I will sue. Microsoft sucks, everyday then give more reasons to move all my stuff over to linux.
- mindsinker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0M$ just sunk to an even lower level. I didn't think it was possible.
- DickBreath, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The Apple Lisa was RELEASED as a COMMERCIAL PRODUCT in January 1983. It had double click.
This means that the double-click must have been actively practiced within Apple for at least a year or more prior.
Whether Apple invented the jesture, or it came from Xerox or elsewhere, I have a hard time imagining that Microsoft invented it. - 5blocksfree, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Jetwingx: READ THE WHOLE ***** PATENT PEOPLE
Even if you include that little snippet of yours, it's still a rediculous patent, because it takes a method that is commonly found on a desktop/laptop computer, and claims that it is unique, innovative, and novel merely because it appears on a computer that's smaller. That's as rediculous as saying that doing something "on the internet" inherently makes it unique and innovative. - Terry2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Oh brother. I somebody going to patent breathing next? In ... out ... in .... out
- JimXugle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Microshat really needs to spend less money filing for patents that they can't enforce (almost every GUI has a double-click feature) and more mony reducing the BSoD rate.
- dignan2681, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Anyone can get a patent. Does this mean I can patent my hate for Microsoft?
- Czar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"However, mouse-wielding computer users need not worry, as the patent only applies to handheld computers that run Microsoft's PocketPC software, especially the method of bringing up different features depending on how many times a button is pressed."
- G-RaZoR, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Just a bit old eh? The article was written on June 2nd, 2004. They mention it becoming on April 27th, so April 27th (OVER A YEAR AGO!) they received this patent. Nice to know you guys would digg anything....
- scotoma, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i heard they are trying to patent air next
- Odo08, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It is still unbelievable what qualifies for a patent.
- Grandfinale1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hi everybody next they are going to patent using the restroom. Wait wait that a hell of a Idea. Now I'm the only one who can use the restroom. Ha ha ha heh ha ha.
- trongod05, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Microsoft is the biggest pile of *****! So if I write a ***** guide on how to wipe out Winblows and install OSX x86, do I have to pay microsoft for saying the word double click when I say "ok, now double click on the Virtual PC icon?"
- trongod05, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0BTW, I will comment but this story doesn't deserve a digg. The guy who posted it should get a digg, but the story itself, no!
- techguy420, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0wow, that sucks! I have always enjoyed the single click any way! so f! ms!
- rastorize, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Screw the double click - just don't click it at all! http://dontclick.it/
- cort89, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow i'd say that is the stupidest patent ever, but i bet there are dumber ones. My question is what do they intend to achieve with this truly needless task?
- CherryTzors, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is seriously gonna mess up some competitors... lol. Apple's gunna get their butts sued off if they don't invent the next double click.
- mu-sly, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I have patented the scratching of one's balls. In future, you may only scratch your balls for a fee of $50 per scratch, or, at your option, you may purchase a lifetime scratch license for $1mil ("one meeeelion dollars") that will allow you to permanently scratch one (1) set of balls for as long as you require. If you do not comply and continue to scratch your unlicensed balls, we will have no choice but to file a lawsuit against you. This is your final warning and we will not issue any reminders.
