I find this very fascinating... - MLyzz, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17If google checkout is adopted enough, it will kill paypal. I use it with my ebay auctions even though its banned. I have saved well over $100 in the last month!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16Its funny how people bash a supposed monopoly like micosoft for daring to charge a couple hundred bucks for software, then turn around and happily pay thousands of dollars in fees to defacto monopolies like the credit card companies.
Just about every time you make a deal that isn't based in cash, these guys get a cut. That's a far more insidious system then anything microsoft has ever put into the marketplace. - pathy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Because Microsoft's servers are hacked all the time?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10It's worse than that. They get a 3-5% cut, and the stores are forbidden to give people that pay cash a discount.
- bitterg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7You'd prefer that they make something up? I've read the reports on this story, and it is not very clear what Microsoft will do with Points.
- ThugEsquire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Don't worry, I'll dig you down so as to preserve your dignity.
- primehifi, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Paypal are a bunch of monopolistic thieves.
I hope someone else does come along to give them some good competition. - Novagenesis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@aliengoods
I'll be happy to send you 13 pennies. Please enclose the shipping costs of that weight (also in pennies) at your own expense. - aliengoods, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@TomtheWombat
You're right. Pennies shouldn't matter. So I propose this. Why don't you and everyone else on Digg send me seven of them. Make it thirteen. Then I can tell everyone how all of those pennies don't matter. - nullcodes, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Will it be easy to use and fit neatly into the interface? If signup is a hassle .. forget it. If sites using this get annoying nag screens .. forget it. If getting refunds is a pain in the ass .. forget it.
- noreturn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Since when was Western Union touted as a PayPal killer? Western Union has been around since before there were computers, let alone the internet or PayPal.
- unloud, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2use
paragraphs - cplusplus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Well, Paypal, Mastercard and Visa and too rich but there's no way Microsoft is the answer.
- aliengoods, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3No, it assures paypals survival at least as long as ebays. With fees, scammers, and all of the hassle of getting any customer service, I don't think ebays survival is guaranteed.
- catalysis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Sony already has this in Japan and diggers are overwhelmingly against it.
http://digg.com/gaming_news/PS3_to_get_even_better_at_taking_your_money_with_add_on_credit_card_reader - hobogeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1To be honest I'm in two minds of whether this will succeed or not. Firstly, Microsoft has the power and the people to manage to pull off many things but they have lost their zing against the new start up companies that are forming these days which have fresh ideas and user appeal. As many people have said they are completely off their game in a lot of places such as browser, search and many think OS- I'll let people have their own opinion on that last one. However, if its one thing that Microsoft is good at...well its managing money.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Would you rather trust praypal with your monies, then?
- allowedcloud, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Flooz!!!
- freff, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2blocked. And reported. That's a twofer, congrats.
- cmer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'll digg anything that might kill Paypal and eBay, the worst ripoff online.
- joe90210, on 10/12/2007, -6/+7
@meshman
seriously, kill yourself. I am not even joking. - franksands, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Do you remember that adorable little thing called passport, now called live id? It will be that easy. As a matter of fact, it will be put together with all your other info.
- Arthere, on 10/16/2008, -0/+1Nothing can stop paypal.......it's too evil
http://www.creditcardassociate.com/paypal.html - eth3l, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Nice find.
- akinder, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Theyll hate this too, since its Microsoft. Unless its some OSS company doing it, or Apple, its evil.
Speaking of OSS, glad to see that Firefox still has the apostrophe bug, even in the latest builds. Open Source rocks! - sconeofstone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sounds like a good deal - for Microsoft. They'd get all the float from the money deposited to buy points.
- Arrakistor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Actually I think eCache could kill them all. eCache is the first fully anonymous but entirely gold-backed payment system. You could literally send a billion dollars via text message. Not to mention, it beats credit card and paypal fees since the transfer charge is only 0.1% instead of 2.5% etc.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Trust Microsoft with my money????? Are you OUT OF YOUR FREAKIN MIND????
- pjleonhardt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1thats not entirely true..
They cannot have a surcharge for people paying with credit cards..
Thats not to say that they can't charge _below_ advertised prices for those paying with cash - kdkauf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0One error in the article - MasterCard and Visa do not make money from interest. The banks who issue the cards (Citi, MBNA, HSBC, etc) are the ones who make the money off of interest.
MC and Visa make there money via the transaction fees - A fee for using their network to route and settle the entire transaction.
For any merchant, transaction fees are negotiable. I have owned a retail and online business for about 5 years. I usually renegotiated my fees several times per year with my Acquirer. - hiscity, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Well MasterCard isn't doing too hot anyway best I can tell. I dropped off my truck at the dealer to have some out of warranty work done. Intended to pick-up a rental from the Enterprise Car Rental office that's on site at that dealer.
I've used my MasterCard ATM before to rent vehicles there during repairs. This time, much to my surprise since I'd already dropped off the truck -- they said I'd need two copies of utility bills along with the debit card to get a vehicle.
I got the dealer to drop me off back home and was so steamed I had them do only half the work I intended (just the starter replacement, forget changing out the back brakes).
I won't be doing business with either the dealer or Enterprise again. Enterprise told me it made no difference that I was a long standing customer of the auto dealer, which of course the dealer could have pulled up the records to show.
Anyway, it made me wonder about MasterCard... I think I'll go move about $15K out of the bank -- and make the point that it's due to their card. They might not care (chump change to a bank) -- but it seems like a good way to deal with my feeling insulted.
btw... it was a Ford dealer. They've really gone down hill.... and it helps to blow off a little steam here! Does anyone really serve their customers anymore? Seems like we definitely need new e-commerce. - darlyn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Lol I can't wait to be using a credit card that says Microsoft on it ...
- thewump, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Ebays ownership of Paypal assures it's long term survival as the leader for as long as Ebay is the premiere site of it's kind. It truly doesn't matter what the spec of a payment method is, if it is tightly integrated with something that people want.. and one thing that ebay do well is integrate..
Ebay Paypal integration: Great
Paypal USPS / UPS integration: BRILLIANT.
It's not what you have, it's what you do with it - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Id be glad, as long as its easy to sign up for.
- Triffid, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2lol... thanks for the John Madden imitation ;)
“Hey, the offensive linemen are the biggest guys on the field, they're bigger than everybody else, and that's what makes them the biggest guys on the field.” - petekf4qoe, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1PALPAL SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
THEY WILL SCREW YOU OVER IN A HEARTBEAT NO MATTER WHAT THE CASE IS. I sold something on E-bay. I have 226 positive feedback and even got a positive from the guy who put in a claim against me. He waited over a month and then wanted a refund for the item. I asked him was it damaged in shipping? He said no. I said well then I cannot give you a refund. He then demanded a refund. I told him forget it. He had already given me a positive feedback and waited over a month then wants to complain about the item. The item was working fully when I shipped it to him so I do not know if he damaged it or he switched it or something. So I would not refund him any money. Well he put in a claim against me trough Paypal. They contacted me about the matter and I explained that the item was working fine when I shipped it to him. They said they would get back to me about this matter. Well after about 2 weeks they took the $1.81 cents I had left in my account out and e-mailed me that I had a negative balance of $58.19. I could not believe this. Ebay's policy is electronic items are sold as is. But I guess Paypal does not care about this or do they care about your side of the story. I would have refunded the guy if he would have not waited to complain about it. If he would have just contacted me right away and said there was a problem that would have been the end of it. But to wait over a month, give me positive feedback and then start complaining. There is something fishy going on here. I told Paypal to go PI$$ up a rope. That I would not deposit money into my account and that I would never use them for anything again. I have been a member with them since the very beginning and always in good standing. The same with Ebay. I have always felt that I represented all of the items I sold to the best of my ability and explained and described it as best I could and included lots of pictures of the item(s). I also answered e-mails ASAP to answer any questions about the item(s). FU*( you PAYPAL - c6mjohn, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0The real question is are small businesses complaining about the fees? I think the ones that are complaining are deluded. Small businesses make a lot more money when they accept credit card transactions. Its just plain human nature to spend more when you are using plastic versus using cash, especially in today's world where a lot of people don't carry much cash, if any. I don't think its insidious at all.
- ThugEsquire, on 10/12/2007, -8/+5You're crazy.
- thcobbs, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3"if it's adopted enough"
Thank you captain obvious.... - ronmexico, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3Key words being "if it's adopted enough"

- dclowd9901, on 10/12/2007, -12/+4"I just noticed that "unclear" uses the same letters as "nuclear""
But not the same as "nukeular." - AhmedB, on 10/12/2007, -12/+3Microsoft, hmmmm security comes to mind when I think about it, with their record of windows security bugs...err...'enhancements'..no thank you I will stick with my MasterCard/Visa.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -12/+3Quote by Ken Fisher (AKA Asstalker) "What will Microsoft do? That remains unclear"
now thats informative - meshman, on 10/12/2007, -16/+5Hmm... lets see... I could pay Mastercard 22% in interest or I could use Microsoft's service. I could pay Mastercard 22% in interest or I could sell everything I own and toss the money into the street as I burn my house down and slash my wrists. THAT's how much I'd trust Microsoft's service. I'd prefer to pay Mastercard $80/month in interest than see jackass get even a single penny.
"Bill Gates indicated that Microsoft was looking into finding a way to make so-called micropayments a reality online."
No he's not, he's looking to make money. The advancement of the online world or your convenience doesn't enter into it. This is Microsoft. It doesn't matter who you are or what your needs are, unless your pockets are lined with cash you can go f yourself. They should adopt a new slogan:
"We don't care because we don't have to. We're Microsoft. Now suck this."

What is Digg?
