- DCoder, on 10/12/2007, -10/+58"Also Mark was the first one to pull the alarm on sony's rootkit. "
Yea, so who will do it next time? Certainly not MS/Mark - Chuck95, on 10/12/2007, -7/+49Are you guys kidding? You want to be charged for this stuff now? My first reaction was "NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!" I can only hope we don't end up losing most of these tools.
- mscamara, on 10/12/2007, -3/+41I now wonder how come it took so long for them to buy this company. They tools and expertise are just superb. Also Mark was the first one to pull the alarm on sony's rootkit.
- Chuck95, on 10/12/2007, -1/+26I hope those guys were paid well. Sure I do not begrudge them for selling. But anyone who is a MS systems admin knows that Sysinternals is a gold mine. We can't lose these tools. I can only pray that they allow them to continue development and keep them accessible.
- chrono13, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20Traditionally, what happens to companies that are bought out or otherwise enter any sort of partner-level deal with Microsoft?
The same thing that happens when Norton buys them. The product is renamed, changed a bit (usually not for the better) and discontinued. Partition Magic?
What happened when AOL bought Winamp? They fired most its staff, and left a couple for minor bugfixes and security.
Will Microsoft's new Process Explorer or Autoruns show WGA? Allow it to be stopped or disabled?
Or perhaps MS will reason that their OS is a secure and stable OS, and to simplify Process Explorer, they will only show the things that are shown with the regular Task Manager. After all, since it is so secure and stable, no one should need access to the lowest levels of operation.
And speaking of lowest levels of operation. I think that Autoruns goes far and beyond what Microsoft has traditionally allowed control, access and even viewing over how Windows works, what starts up, and what is allowed to be changed.
After all, even Microsoft was surprised to find that Windows would run with NO services running: http://www.sysinternals.com/blog/2005/07/running-windows-with-no-services.html
What search engine does Process Explorer use when searching for information regarding a running process? It won't be Google anymore. - FlyboyP, on 10/12/2007, -6/+24DCoder makes a good point, don't know why his comment is modded down. I'll take it further and say Winternals was great *because* it was a 3rd party, and not held accountable to MS corporate interests. Something like the Sony rootkit exposure doesn't happen from within MS.
- ramsinks.com, on 10/12/2007, -4/+21Crap.. there goes a good one.
- JPPiper, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16SysInternals is the best - Their tools are awesome - Some of the stuff they put out (FOR FREE) are the best darn utilities on the computing radar!
Great stuff
Hope this move does not stiffle future development tools - merreborn, on 10/12/2007, -5/+19"I mean, if you owned a company, and Microsoft offered you millions to sell out, if you stood by your product you would refuse, if your in it for the money, you will allow yourselves to be bought out."
When you've grown out of the 'idealistic' phase, you'll understand the One Great Truth:
EVERYONE is in it for the money. - evilTak, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17The tools were already free. Additionally, "comes with Windows" != "free"

:-) - Chuck95, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11@chrono13
Brilliant examples... Exactly why we wanted this to be third party. I respect Mark Russinovich's decision, but it certainly will raise the blood pressure of some admins today. - Colindean, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12http://thepiratebay.org/details.php?id=3504755
Torrent of Windows XP utilities - merreborn, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14Two employees -- and a library of the best windows utils on earth. They get the software too.
- OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13Why do I get the feeling that MS bought the company not for its tech, but to shut Russinovich up? He has revealed numerous embarassing details about Windows over the years. Now without him, who is to stop the rootkits, malware drivers, and spyware that the MSs and Sonys of the world want to inflict upon users?
Do you really think MS wants to give users the capability to detect the hidden activity of MS's own software?
I'm seriously thinking about dumping Windows for all but gaming and a Photoshop. Who needs these spyware hassles. MS will never fully secure Windows, because they don't want to! - furo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Bummer... The Winternals guys kept Microsoft on their toes without the corporate politics. Now what he has to say will have to go through the red tape machine. As such, Mark's value to the Windows community in general has decreased severely, even though his talent and expertise certainly have not.
-Furo - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Another great tool about to be assimilated by Micro-Borg. I hope they don't fuk it up.
- Drahkar, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13This is a tragedy. Right up there with the purchase of Alienware by Dell. No such thing as free enterprise anymore. As soon as a company gets successful the worthless sharks move in and devour them.
Just a damn shame. - Jams, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Erm Mark actually works/worked for Microsoft he actually has access to the Windows Sourcecode, thus how he wrote his sysinternal book (which was sold by microsoft). Microsoft actually use a lot of his software too.
- anon52, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Or to remove those pesky guys that showed how to hack the internals of the system. I can't imagine the shirts at MS really enjoyed having outsiders explain how their 'tubes' and 'pipes' were all linked together - sometimes haphazardly.
My view is that some of these utilities will be added to a Resource Pack (no source code however), and others will be sold as expensive Administrator add-ons.
Thanks, Mark - I've enjoyed your products and talking to you for many years. Good luck! - iSEPIC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8QUOTE
Is this thumbing your nose at Winternals?
/QUOTE
Yes, they were thumbing their noses - have you never hard of Google search? Search it yourself, here is a good place to start reading to see excactly how they "thumbed their noses" http://www.sysinternals.com/blog/2006/04/why-winternals-sued-best-buy.html
When you start negoiating 12000 licenses, and provide training, and then the client says "no thanks" but still uses it EXTENSIVELY, that's thumbing your nose - nuff said. - raccettura, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9I have this bad feeling some of this stuff is going to go from free to commercial packages.
That's not good for many of us, who struggle with Windows and find these tools to make windows usable. - Wolf451man, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9I'll comment that Winternals had a right to chase best buy/geek squad.
Best Buy and Geek Squad is making tons of money using illegally acquired/copied software.
And then did it while thumbing their noses at Winternals.
I'm with you in seeing this as a "good thing" for Windows consumers. - wallclimber, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Makes one wonder what interesting things might be hidden in Vista that they don't want Mark to "find", discuss, analyze, or make a tool to disable or remove.
Mark & Bryce have one thing that Microsoft does not. That would be: Trust. MS doesn't know how to earn it, so maybe they figure they can buy it.
I hope someone else out there is able to fill the gap left when all of those nice, free utilities from Sysinternals are locked behind the WGA wall. - musteval, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9You do realize that companies decide to be bought? It's not like Microsoft just moves in and says "K, we own you now, here's some money though." Well, usually.
- Magadass, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8You are a blind an ignorant idiot if you seriously think that working for Microsoft will change the way Mark represents himself. Everyone seems to miss the fact that Mark is passionate about Microsoft, he loves their software and if he can help Microsoft overcome its shortcomings with his expertise and get a nice paycheck while doing it then why not!! Jesus christ you people are ***** thick!
- wjadams, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9A little part of me died inside by reading this.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Mark has a blog post here:
http://www.sysinternals.com/blog/2006/07/on-my-way-to-microsoft.html - windhawk, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Holy SH*T!!! Mark is the most talented Windows guy I've ever seen. He was the guy who pioneered the hack that turned Windows NT Workstation into NT Server. I hope that MS didn't buy him to bury him.
- hinten, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6You realize what you are saying about the ethics of the person agreeing to be acquired, right?
Russinovich agrees to be acquired, perhaps he even pro-actively reached out to MS to see if they are interested in purchasing his firm and you are running around claiming MS did it to shut him up.
Say what you will about Microsoft but why insult the decision/thinking/morals/ethics of Russinovich ? - sremick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6And so it begins. I think that and the fact that you can be damn sure Process Explorer will use MSN to search instead of Google are some of the most obvious and immediate examples of the "added-value" this buyout will have for end-users.
Hopefully someone else will step up to the plate. There is a niche for an independent Windows utility guru that has suddenly become vacant. R.I.P. SysInternals - tokyomonster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6"Winternals Software acquired to add technical expertise to Microsoft's operating system development team."
That sentence seems to imply that they didn't have technical expertise before the purchase. How ironic. - bittwiddler35, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7As a former MS software engineer (as well as a former co-worker of Mark at NuMega) I can tell you that they will give Mark an insane amount of freedom wrt to the way his software is distributed.
As for MS being evil please feel free to check out my blog post on the subject:
http://tinyurl.com/8y7mu - info, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Boy, it didn't take them long to update this page...
http://www.sysinternals.com/Licensing.html
At the bottom: "Sysinternals is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Microsoft Corporation." - blearg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Here's a nifty little open source app that will download all the sysinternals apps, install them, and create icons for them on your start menu. It'll even save the downloaded zip files in case Microsoft pulls them off the site.
http://smithii.com/?q=node/view/67 - jav1231, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Or worse, perhaps these tools will go away. :(
- pcuser, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- gengisPhat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5These guys seemed to work hard and get out very cool tools for Windows users. They deserved to get paid for the work they did. I just hope Microsoft doesn't kill all their programs.
- jo42, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Too!
- mrtrick, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Download while you can.
- standsolid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4*jaw drops*
It better not make the winternals stuff suck. - OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4
The same thing that happens when Norton buys them. The product is renamed, changed a bit (usually not for the better) and discontinued. Partition Magic?
Sygate firewall was another terrible loss at the hands of the Symantec beast. - cybercat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4According to the FAQ on winternals.com (http://www.winternals.com/Faq.aspx ) Microsoft is aquiring both Winternals and Sysinternals. I hope this doesn't mean that Sysinterals will stop offering their free utilities as I use many of them daily, especially their pstools command line suite.
I have a feeling that if Microsoft does continue to offer the utilities, they will be intentonally cripled to only run on XP or (more likely) Vista and of course, only for validated Windows Genuine Advantage customers. - OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I feel a great disturbance in the force. As if millions of voices suddenly cried out in terror, and were suddenly silenced.
- schwit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4If the utilities are lost that's bad, but losing the the people who shed light on the evils in the industry such as the Sony rootkit is devastating. I will bet Sony is doing backflips over this situation.
- info, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Resistance is futile!
:-) - jeruvin, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8I see Winternals lately and I think "Best Buy vs. Winternals Fight" from the previous stories. I hope the free tools continue to be released and maybe even more for SysAdmins.
Microsoft Acquired what is now Windows Defender and now Winternals Software. Seems like Microsoft is attempting to combine everything needed for a good experience (Keep it working and fixing) under one roof. - OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3
Maybe it is covering a glaring deficiency at Redmond?
Exactly. - neatflux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3LOL, exactly what I was thinking.
- therernospoons, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Better go download all their freeware before MS makes it shareware!
