- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+79Codename: PooTube
- Saintlink, on 10/12/2007, -5/+62How much you want to bet that if you can download any files they will be in WMV format only, even if it accepts .MOV, .AVI and others for uploading. Any takers?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+37Hey, a good chance to legally run up MS's bandwidth bills.. I'll bite!
- twtmc, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20So now we have NBC's clone, Microsoft's clone, PornoTube (which actually serves a purpose), and of coarse the original YouTube. Odds are netscape is going to make a clone of it next and then pay the top people from YouTube to post there. This whole clone thing is just sad really.
- dustyshadow, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20"it's that crappy proprietary stuff google and co uses."
Are you trying to say that .wmv isn't proprietary? Cause if you are, you are a f'n idiot. - cplusplus, on 10/12/2007, -4/+22Another great "innovation" from Microsoft.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19Why don't they just BUY Youtube? That would make so much more sense!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+20The reason it's laughable is b/c MS is trying to rebrand themselves as a number of things.
A. A friend of the open source community
B. A web company (like Google, myspace, youtube)
C. A security vendor
And frankly there's already leaders in these places. And per usual MS is the last on board to play copycat.
Wanna count how many Vista issues are copied from KDE? Gnome? Linux in general? OS X? MSN messenger was nothing more than a rip off of AIM. Seriously, they've done nothing but copy copy copy copy copy "sure things" since day one. (yeah, plenty of other companies do it too, i know.) How about some true innovation? Instead of trying to make crippled firefox knock off.
If they want to rebrand themselves and find a new market to expand in, how about they innovate something and give us something no one else has yet. - kettlechips, on 10/12/2007, -4/+20Also it would get rid of all those pesky Firefox users.
- UltraPope, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17Too bad pornotube doesn't let you filter man.loving men. Geez, a manhole is an access way to the sewers, people!
- cplusplus, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17Yeah, and they will integrate it with Windows Media Player and maybe a creation tool that comes with every copy of Windows. Their usual leveraging ways.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13I think Soapbox is a great name. Inexplicably, Microsoft hates giving their online products awesome names, so I doubt it'll stick. We'll probably end up with MSN Live Personal Video or something equally boring.
Aside from that, a competing service from Microsoft is good for the user-generated video service sector. It might spur Google Video and YouTube to increase functionaltity, or for Microsoft to work even harder with Soapbox to steal eyeballs.
However, I am a bit worried that support beyond Internet Explorer and Windows Media Video might be a bit lacking. I guess a wait and see approach is best in this circumstance. - musicmantrs, on 10/12/2007, -6/+19You know how much server-side resources it would take to convert something like Youtube to WMV? They'll convert it before you upload it using the required Microsoft Video Service program that you payed 1000 bucks for.
- SayeSayno, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14That could work, or perhaps, since this seems to be a trend that everyone else it trying to get in on, they could call call it "MeToob".
- MySchizoBuddy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Mohanned. Google and co uses flash with VP6 codec i think.
Flash is most widel used than WM or Quicktime anyway - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12I'm sure this will workout as well as their Myspace ripoff (MSN Spaces) which originally also ripped off the logo to ubuntu with minor modifications mind you.
Or all those live apps and changes they're making to compete with Google.
Keep making Office boys. Stick to what you're good at. - flag564, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Seriously. If another site gets in the mix allowing you to upload content, and allowing us to see it for free, it will only take some of the load off of Youtube and expand choice.
There is no need to look at this as a us against Them contest.
Be happy more of these sites are popping up instead of shutting down - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8It would be MeThreeb ... Google and Yahoo cloned it first.
- MiDri, on 10/12/2007, -5/+13You've opened up my world twtmc, I had no idea there was a pornotube...
- deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9I can't believe how a company as big as Microsoft is consistently playing catch up and copy cat. I totally blame their management because I know for a fact there are tons of brilliant and creative people working at Microsoft. It must suck going into work everyday knowing your great ideas will be passed over in favor of some copy cat product designed to push other MS products and crush the truly innovative sites. It's no surprise to me that MS is starting to have trouble keeping their best developers around. No amount of free soda is worth showing up for work everyday doing photocopy code development while your best ideas goto waste.
- garethevans, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I guess this makes sense, especially after Bill Gates admitted to watching videos on YouTube that weren't exactly in accordance with copyright laws.
(snippet of the interview here: http://www.computerworld.com/blogs/node/2803 ) - bennyboy371, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Theres not a damn chance its going to work anything like anyone wants it to. Its going to shove ads in our faces and require a separate download, is my bet. Sure, it looks half decent from whats listed... but given their horrendous track record, I'm kind of inclined to assume the worst.
- greenamp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Is MS capable of any original idea?
- Jdub7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I am sure the moment Microsoft considers buying YouTube all the copyright zealots will call their lawyers and try to figure out how much money they can sue for.
- EochaidRiata, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6"Thank you for your interest in Soapbox.
To use this site, you must be running Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 or later.
To upgrade to the latest version of the browser, go to the Internet Explorer Downloads website. " - ismith, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Anyone else expect the service to be *****? I agree with previous comments, it probably will be WMVs (***** format) and also censored (M$ isn't open to communitites, no matter how hard they "try").
I'll quote Apple- "Redmond, start your photocopiers!" - mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Don't they understand by now that these "killer" products never end up killing anything but their own product? It's almost impossible to replace a massively popular product.
- jivemasta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6They always use good names in beta and then switch it to something stupid. Longhorn -> vista, wistler server -> 2003 server, soapbox -> ?.
I think they need to give this whole Microsoft live stuff a rest. It seems like a half-hearted attempt to look like they can be trendy as well. They need to just stick to being lame and making actual applications. A good analogy for the windows live stuff is a 40 year old white guy dressing in rapper style clothes. It just isn't right. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5All Microsoft tends to do is get ideas from other companys and then make their own version of it... google...apple..(gasp)sony..
- wistar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5You don't seem to understand that MS is, by design, a follower. This mitigates risk and has proven to be an extremely successful model. Calling them copycats is music to their ears.
- kettlechips, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Except Netscape, Lotus 123, and Wordperfect.
- TVarmy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Over 10 minutes is Google Video. I actually kinda prefer Google, despite the fact it has less videos.
- flag564, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Allow for videos longer than 10 minutes and they wont have to advertise.
- xXShadowstormXx, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Should be interesting, indeed.
YouTube vs. Microsoft's "Soapbox". MS is going to have to advertise like crazy to attract users to its own video site. - Hamsterpotpies, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I found the link to the soapbox thing... http://soapbox.msn.com/
"You are not authorized to view this page" - bigbrains, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4It makes me laugh when people say that Microsoft is coping somebody. like a few said before me, invovation is taking something good and making it better. Google cloned Yahoo, YouTube was not the first Video site, MAC got much of its interface from Xerox, Firefox got most of there ideas from Opera.
Innovation is about taking a good idea and making it better. When Microsoft does this right, they dominate, when the don't, their product dies out. - Flump5000, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8why dont they spend some time improving their ***** OS?
- wistar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Should be?
- drizek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"Where's Napster these days, hmm ?"
they got sued. noone made a better product arguably until bittorrent was released. - Dustoff2001, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The irony here is that Microsoft spends five billion dollars on R&D and the best they can do is copy ‘YouTube’.
- drizek, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4google didnt copy any of that stuff, they just bought those companies(orkut, writely, the google earth one, picassa, etc.). And displaying videos in a website isnt exactly an innovative idea. Google video is no different to google image or google web search. It was just an issue of waiting for computers to have the bandwidth needed to play that content.
- osmaker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Actually, if YouTube licensed the On2 VP6 codec for server-side encoding, then their quality/size ratio would kill just about any codec in wide use (including Xvid/DivX).
- MasterGrief, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5MiDri:
Oh yes, there is. Extremely obvious url too. :D
Unfortunately, its mostly gay porno. D: - wistar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Well, Netscape killed themselves, Excel just plain outperformed 123 and although WordPerfect had a real lead, especially in the legal community, the slowness with which they introduced a Windows version hurt them a lot.
- sodascape, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3God, is there anything else that Microsoft needs to ripoff??!?!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4That's why they want to beat YouTube, not Google Video. The difference between the two is nobody really gives a crap about Google's half-arsed spinoff.
- Tetraca, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Will they eventually slip on the soap, or will they pull through?
- neko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"Thank you for your interest in Internet Explorer.
To download the latest version of Microsoft Internet Explorer, you must be running Microsoft Windows XP SP2 or later with Windows Genuine Advantage." - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4MS has been very nice to FF ... don't for a second think MS is petty enough to harbour animosity or anything even beyond mild curiosity re. Mozilla, and that curiosity is probably centered around the tolerance and blind faith of their fans rather than the company and their work.
MS have a *real* corporation to run, Mozilla just have a browser to play with.
http://www.builderau.com.au/news/soa/Firefox_says_yes_to_Microsoft_s_offer/0,339028227,339270934,00.htm - eboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3it blows me away that a company worth 200b dollars can't generate a single original idea.
