Microsoft & DIGG - New Partnership Launches [ MS Press Release]
microsoft.com — As part of the relationship, Microsoft will be the exclusive provider of display and contextual advertising on Digg. The two companies also agreed to work together on future technology and advertising initiatives. “Our collaboration with Digg is about bringing our advertising technology and sales force to one of the fastest-growing sites o
- 1377 diggs
- digg it
- seraph82, on 10/10/2007, -43/+231Okay okay, yeah, ads suck. Seriously, though, if you're a digger and you're not using adblock, you're not a digger. Now, hopefully this will bring in some major $$ to Digg and the site can get a BRAND NEW F*CKING SEARCH FUNCTION that doesn't leave diggers foaming at the mouth! (hopefully some other great stuff too)
- MasterThief117, on 10/10/2007, -23/+87Why are you censoring yourself?
It looks ridiculous.- subxero37, on 10/10/2007, -9/+39People use profanity so much that it loses its meaning, especially typed or over the internet, so censoring it makes it actually stand out now.
- smedrick, on 10/10/2007, -23/+10That's the dumbest thing I've ever read.
- Linkin4, on 10/10/2007, -10/+2You read it.
- ChileanGoD, on 10/10/2007, -6/+15You're right. Not using the complete word it actually gives out the impression that you don't want to use it but the situation forces you to do so. It shows a note of class out of something that would mark you as a ranting moron.
- rolosworld, on 10/10/2007, -8/+2Thats ******* right!
- hmunkey, on 10/10/2007, -7/+3Why can't he?
- bonedead, on 10/10/2007, -6/+3"Don't say friggin, if you're going to use the F word go for the gold."
- AllenL, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8I still dont understand why a lot of tv show like tv-14 will blur out stuff like middle fingers. I mean, who doesn't know what is under that blur?
- subxero37, on 10/10/2007, -9/+39People use profanity so much that it loses its meaning, especially typed or over the internet, so censoring it makes it actually stand out now.
- serpentskiss, on 10/10/2007, -10/+62Yeh. AdBlock is a must with Digg. Even with it on, the site is really dog-slow. It's horrendous with ads active on it.
- kevincannon, on 10/10/2007, -12/+52Yea, all Diggers should use adblock, and prevent digg from making some money to keep the site running.
- drachemorder, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8Most ad revenue comes from clicks on the ads. If you're using adblock, the ads are annoying enough to you that you wouldn't be clicking on them anyway. I expect the lost revenue is negligible.
- thomasb227, on 10/10/2007, -4/+4HELLO....you are only hurting digg and their ads are unobtrusive. It's not like they throw up a whole banner page you have to click through to get to content or generate an overlay that you have to close to read the site.
FYI...sites are not cheap to run. I commend them for there current ad setup, which is not optimized at all. - manitoba98xp, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I agree (with your sentiment, not your statement). I disable Adblock on Digg. Yes, it slows the site down and takes longer to load, and no, I never click on them, but I like Digg and want it to survive. Maybe the page impressions will do something.
- EvilWalksWithMe, on 10/10/2007, -16/+29Digg is slowed down by ad's? Either your talking *****, or your internet connections suck.
- marcmarc, on 10/10/2007, -18/+2learn to write.
- VanillaStarfish, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3It seems you need a little punctuation yourself. *****.
Hint: Capitalization is your friend.
- VanillaStarfish, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3It seems you need a little punctuation yourself. *****.
- brownspank, on 10/10/2007, -4/+23Every Digg article I open pegs my CPU; Firefox freezes up for a few seconds whenever the ads start to load. And I'm only using a few essential extensions. So, no, not necessarily an Internet connection thing.
- raynar, on 10/10/2007, -1/+19its all the ***** javascript digg uses. can't we have a "lite" version?
- solinent, on 10/10/2007, -4/+5Actually it's the ***** of your CPU. I run a AMD 4400+ and I haven't had any slowdowns with firefox (on ubuntu).
- thomasb227, on 10/10/2007, -3/+2yeah firefox is dog slow with even one extension. When I had the javascript debugger enabled I could watch firefox draw the damn elements. SUCK!
- natenovs, on 10/10/2007, -2/+0actually its the ***** of flash. it runs like crap on every mac or linux machine ive used.
- marcmarc, on 10/10/2007, -18/+2learn to write.
- kevincannon, on 10/10/2007, -12/+52Yea, all Diggers should use adblock, and prevent digg from making some money to keep the site running.
- roxya, on 10/10/2007, -19/+15Hopefully they can fund development work on bringing back the old comment system. Hardly anyone reads replies due to the extra clicks required.
- geuisteses, on 10/10/2007, -2/+10If you or anyone else reads this, click on Global Settings at the top of any comment section. Go to the bottom and change Set Comment Threading View to Show All Threads
- jessicass, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5That solves the problem of having them expanded initially. However, if you have buried a comment and want to then go back and see the replies to it its a game of chance as to whether it will actually fetch the replies or not. Most often, not.
- aaronm67, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5I have stopped burying replies because of that.

- kindrobot, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3It's the elephant in the room.

- axonal, on 10/10/2007, -10/+63You mean there are ads on Digg???
- honeymustardn, on 10/10/2007, -6/+19I never knew either. Long live AdBlock!
- JoshuaH, on 10/10/2007, -22/+12The "What Ads", OMGFirefox Adblock! plus comments are starting to annoying...

- adolfojp, on 10/10/2007, -9/+24I wish I could block stupid AdBlock comments.
- Light11, on 10/10/2007, -5/+3adblock comment block?
- tdous, on 10/10/2007, -1/+16Yeah. They're what pay for the massive free website that everyone complains about as though they have a personal stake in it.
- retsig, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5Don't they pay per click? I'm sure as hell not going to click on them, so why should I see them?

- rabidbob, on 10/10/2007, -14/+2I *heart* my hosts file; no ad block needed.
- TeHCrAzY, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8Bet you love the lag when you load up your browser...or anything else that uses the network...
- gadgetuk, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Not such a great solution if the ads are hosted on the same server as the content you're trying to view either. Not everyone uses remote adservers.
- johimself, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4...but you know that that's the point of the story right? Microsoft (ie. not Digg) are going to be advertising... On Digg...
Consider changing your username to gadgetusa...

if all diiggers use adblock then how does digg make any $$ at all - Adventeuer, on 10/10/2007, -11/+1Guys.. I think we all saw this coming...

- hmunkey, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4You have fun.
- johimself, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13"UNSUSCRIBED!!!"
- Philbert, on 10/10/2007, -4/+8To be honest for a long time I didn't even know Digg had ads, until I looked at it on my PSP.
- nakani, on 10/10/2007, -8/+2You mean your iPhone
- EbilPhish, on 10/10/2007, -12/+16So how long until MS starts to use the new 'team' to suppress anti-MS news, Linux/Mac/ODF news etc...
And MS articles amazingly end up on the front page quicker.
I don't mind advertising (well I adblock but anyway) but will it stop at that?
Seems an odd choice for MS to simply advertise to site that is mostly Linux/Mac orientated...- hmunkey, on 10/10/2007, -7/+11MS isn't the devil, stop making it look like one.
- thomasb227, on 10/10/2007, -7/+7That would require a personal attempt at maturity. Save your breath.
- meatmcguffin, on 10/10/2007, -6/+3Proof?
- ScrewedThePooch, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4"MS isn't the devil, stop making it look like one."
Pics or I call BS
- NinjaBoy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4MS doen't give a ***** if x amount of geeks use linux or apple, they want the remaining y ammount of geeks to click and ad and decided to buy an exchange server or a 2003 domain controller.
And if its not their ad im sure they dont mind that a apple fan bought a snogg shirt. As long as they get a percentage.
- hmunkey, on 10/10/2007, -7/+11MS isn't the devil, stop making it look like one.
- bsmang, on 10/10/2007, -5/+9Ad Block? No thanks. If I used that, then I would miss the cool Snorg T-Shirt ads.
- fatas, on 10/10/2007, -13/+9Time to fork and start a non-MS Digg.
- ahmedadoody, on 10/10/2007, -6/+5hear hear. please put me officially on the record as saying; ***** MICROSOFT.
- chieffy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1There is a foss/linux focussed digg style site called fsdaily.com
- CyberBlade, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6im with the above, the search function on digg is terrible!
- NinjaBoy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Yeah i've wanted a new search since digg first started.
- bluephoenix, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1don't count on it....looks like they're focusing on advertising a lot more now....
http://www.linkedin.com/jobs?viewJob=&jobId=337489&trk=mh_recentjob - LogicBomB, on 10/10/2007, -3/+7What the HELL are you talking about? That's like saying "i'll never buy but I hope they do well so I can take advantage of it".
Ad's is how digg makes money, you want to block yourself from how they make money, yet you hope they earn enough to make changes? Seriously, ad's are how the internet ***** works - use the blockers if you want but don't even suggest you hope the sites you block make money. - LogicBomB, on 10/10/2007, -8/+4What the HELL are you talking about? That's like saying "i'll never buy but I hope they do well so I can take advantage of it".

- kisore, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1Well, it is not going to matter whether Digg use Google or Microsoft ads because lots of us use AdBlock. But personally, I prefer Google ads more than Microsoft. It is not that I have anything against Microsoft. Heck, I am using a Windows PC at this moment. But Google is the way to go!
- TechCF, on 10/10/2007, -4/+1Not read the article yet, but M$ ?? AMAGADD
Anyway, I agree with your points. ADBlock and I really hope Digg gets money to fix a picture section and the search function. - Cyber_Akuma, on 10/10/2007, -3/+1How about those of us reading Digg from work and are not allowed to install outside applications like Firefox?
- ScrewedThePooch, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1tell your boss that he's an ass
- geoffpado, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Maybe you should be, I don't know, WORKING instead of digging?
- MasterThief117, on 10/10/2007, -23/+87Why are you censoring yourself?
- hseldon, on 10/10/2007, -29/+223What's wrong with Google???
- ddorent, on 10/10/2007, -53/+44here is a question for you, what's wrong with microsoft?
- BenTM, on 10/10/2007, -22/+61A lot is wrong with Microsoft.
- jessicass, on 10/10/2007, -4/+5Such as?
- sickswaystop, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1business approach, (besides windows) all i see MS doing is entering markets other companies have already tapped and just take take take, such as this advertising program MS hadn't started until google. which brings me too GREED oh and control issues. dont they have enough power??? why does live.com look like google killer?
- mrFREEZE, on 10/10/2007, -6/+5Their illegal muscling of Netscape, their illegal leveraging of IE on win95,98,NT,etc. their flagrant violation of standards when it comes to international/industry standards (Jscript, anyone?), Vista, the Zune, microsoft genuine advantage, Ballmer: "GOOGLE IS A HOUSE OF CARDS... I'LL ***** KILL GOOGLE!", microsoft passport (now known as Live ID), defective Xbox 360s that were knowingly rushed with ***** Chinese components, forcing game developers to use Xbox Live instead of "free ***** internet play", leveraging Vista to run Halo 2, even though it runs perfectly well on XP, etc, etc, etc,..... these are just off the top of my head. The real list is waaaay too long.

- Randinn, on 10/10/2007, -19/+40Where do I start....
- tdous, on 10/10/2007, -11/+13You could start at all. Oh wait, or are you just towing the trendy line and don't actually have a decent argument other than "I hate M$" therefore I don't want them to serve ads I won't look at anyway? Congratulations.
- noahhoward, on 10/10/2007, -7/+11Hmm, well lets see, despite the anti-trust suits they STILL have IE integrated into their OS. They refuse to fix a browser that has been broken for years. In one hand they attack open source while forcing their own 'open' formats into place. Treating their customers like criminals in the name of anti-piracy. Overly complex interactions. The list goes on.
- tdous, on 10/10/2007, -11/+13You could start at all. Oh wait, or are you just towing the trendy line and don't actually have a decent argument other than "I hate M$" therefore I don't want them to serve ads I won't look at anyway? Congratulations.
- Walli, on 10/10/2007, -19/+262 comments but no answer, and dugg up ? I'm no fanboy but thats just M$ bashing without reason.
- skywake, on 10/10/2007, -10/+33without reason? I think we all have very good reason to hate Microsoft.
Anti-competitive behavior, their love of Software Patents, their "anti-piracy" measures....
If it wasn't for Microsoft everyone would probably be using *nix.....- subxero37, on 10/10/2007, -5/+9I'll agree. But the 'everyone would probably be using *nix' argument... y'know, *nix is not the world's greatest operating system architecture.
- over9, on 10/10/2007, -8/+9Everyone's free to install *nix on their computer. It's just windows does everything they want it to do. On the other hand Apple is worse than Microsoft in this regard. I mean they force you to buy hardware just to use their OS. That's as bad as microsoft bundling all that ***** with windows.
- hmunkey, on 10/10/2007, -3/+7They also pretty much created modern computing as we know it.
- meatmcguffin, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Windows is based around stealing Apple's ideas. Office is pretty good but it didn't change modern computing as we know it. It was beaten to the market by Lotus.
So that leaves creating modern computing by undercutting the competition, embrace, extend and extinguish, buyouts and monopolies. Sounds about right. - naio, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1Skyware, I think I've never seen such an amount of ***** like what you wrote before...
- tdous, on 10/10/2007, -3/+3@skywake: What does any of that have to do with who serves the ads no one looks at anyway? What does that have to do with it? What?
- iticu, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3The fact that we are going to be generating some extra money for them by coming to the site..

- Spr0k3t, on 10/10/2007, -11/+1I'm guessing he used the "html" style tag to add in the [/sarcasm]
- FutureGuy, on 10/10/2007, -4/+6Google probably assumed that because of the many moron's that use this site Digg would have no option but to stick with Google and paid Digg ***** cut in the ads. Digg said "screw you" and switched to MS.
Ohh and for those who think Google is next to God, its more like next to Devil only it wears a nice Armani Sheep's clothing, one has to look under the shiny coat to see all the hypocrisy. For starters its supposed to be biggest open source supporter, which one of Google's core product is open source???? - bluegene, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1MICROSOFT....do u hear that?
- BenTM, on 10/10/2007, -22/+61A lot is wrong with Microsoft.
- mastercheif, on 10/10/2007, -9/+24Yea, I thought google would be a much better choice because you don't only get one of the biggest (if not already) advertising companies on the net, you get their search technology with it.
- thomasb227, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1It sounds more personalized to me. Like it would target the users not the content.
- Septimus, on 10/10/2007, -17/+7A lot.

- Malte33, on 10/10/2007, -16/+19why microsoft????
- johimself, on 10/10/2007, -2/+13Because they have a lot of money?
- DivisibleByZero, on 10/10/2007, -5/+23Google doesn't pay as much?
- tnvwboy, on 10/10/2007, -1/+14That's likely the reason. Don't forget, Digg is a business. If Microsoft is offering a better cut of ad revenue than Google, why wouldn't they take it? Especially with so many users running AdBlock. This gives them more money. How is that bad? When it comes to ads, does it really matter if its Google or Microsoft? It's still ads.
- skinfitz, on 10/10/2007, -15/+5Google is the New Evil® - didn't you know?
- jessicass, on 10/10/2007, -3/+2Of course they are. They got popular.. which means it became cool to hate them. Just like microsoft, and underground bands that get popular, etc. Suddenly they all suck and it becomes oh-so cool to talk about how great it was BEFORE they sold out. Same tired argument, different catalyst.
- sickswaystop, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2nobody hates google, your crazy

- kenadamsmith, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5i think because google pay per click only..
- NJank, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8it's called "cost benefit analysis". MSFT came out on top.
- shadearg, on 10/10/2007, -5/+4Not if users don't allow them. I specifically allow Google ads with Adblock. I want to reward them for being 'on topic' and unobtrusive. No other Ad company has earned that kind of respect from me. These Microsoft ads will never make it to my screen. 'Cost Benefit Analysis' never seem to take those kinds of factors into account..
- Ravatar, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2It's okay, because I automatically tune out google ads. I'll make sure to click the Microsoft ones in your absense.
- shadearg, on 10/10/2007, -5/+4Not if users don't allow them. I specifically allow Google ads with Adblock. I want to reward them for being 'on topic' and unobtrusive. - FutureGuy, on 10/10/2007, -4/+3Google probably thought that given that Digg is full of *nix and Apple fanboys Digg will have no option but to stick with it and they decided to give Digg a ***** cut in the ads. Digg was desperate for money to keep itself going so it showed Google the finger. Do you think that Rose didn't think about all the crap from mindless Google worshipers, of course he did, well it just means that the cut Google offered was that much worse then MS. And for those who think that Google is next to God its more like being next to Devil wearing a Armani Sheep clothing (yes they make that too), if you look through the shiny facade you would see that Google is the hypocritical company on earth (ok not as much as Halliburton), for starters if Google is such a proponent of open source how many of its core products are open source ??? please start listing them, I am sure this page is going to fill up.
- modad, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3And here I thought they only had non-brand sheep clothing. Time to upgrade.
- orelses, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1MS will focus on larger highend placements where as google focuses on smaller placements.
- TechCF, on 10/10/2007, -3/+3Google would not buy good sites and turn them bad
- BuddhaPhi, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2It's all about the Benjamins. Digg, like any company, needs money to operate. It's not a charity. Yet, they are charitable in the sense the content is completely free (thanks to the users) and for most people, ad-free as well (thanks to Firefox and ad-blocking tools). Would you pay a monthly subscription to Digg so they didn't have to rely on MS ad money (or anyone else's)?
- gfnw, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1They wouldn't pay a ***** thing.
Everyone expects websites like this to be free with no ads, as if digg runs on dreamhost for $15 a month or something.
Any attempt to actually make some form of revenue from the site and the owners are "greedy" and are "LINING THEIR POCKETS WITH GOOOOOOOOOLD!"
- gfnw, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1They wouldn't pay a ***** thing.
- tacodealer, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0Actually, think about it. Digg is the anti-slashdot, and since all slashdot fanboys love google it only makes sense Digg would go with someone anti-google. Hence, Microsoft.
- ddorent, on 10/10/2007, -53/+44here is a question for you, what's wrong with microsoft?
- BoneStamp, on 10/10/2007, -12/+7try this in google: "digg keyword site:digg.com"
- lhnz, on 10/10/2007, -3/+10how about just "search-term site:www.digg.com".

A new slogan "Digg ain't done till the Apple section won't run..." - kaiserh, on 10/10/2007, -3/+6Reminds me of when Bill Gates bought out Homer Simpson.
HOMER
Oh, they have the Internet on computers now!
MARGE
Homer, Bill Gates is here.
HOMER
Bill Gates?! Millionaire computer nerd Bill Gates! Oh my god. Oh my god. Get out of sight, Marge. I don't want this to look like a two-bit operation.
Marge groans and rolls her eyes. Bill Gates and two "associates" enter.
GATES
Mr. Simpson?
HOMER
You don't look so rich.
GATES
Don't let the haircut fool you, I am exceedingly wealthy.
HOMER
(quietly to Marge) Get a load of the bowl-job, Marge!
GATES
Your Internet ad was brought to my attention, but I can't figure out what, if anything, CompuGlobalHyperMegaNet does, so rather than risk competing with you, I've decided simply to buy you out.
Homer and Marge step aside to talk privately.
HOMER
This is it Marge. I've poured my heart and soul into this business and now it's finally paying off. (covering his mouth) We're rich! Richer than astronauts.
MARGE
Homer quiet. Acquire the deal.
HOMER
(to Gates) I reluctantly accept your proposal!
GATES
Well everyone always does. Buy 'em out, boys!
Bill Gates companions begin to trash the "office".
HOMER
Hey, what the hell's going on!
GATES
Oh, I didn't get rich by writing a lot of checks!
Bill Gates lets out a maniacal laugh. Homer and Marge cower in the corner as the room continues to be trashed. - nicpedersen, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1you should have stopped after "Reminds me of when Bill Gates bought out Homer Simpson. "...we know the context

I love the fact that loads of them are saying "Digg has ads? I have firefox/adblock and Microsoft will be paying Digg for ads I am not seeing", and failing to notice that if the ads are blocked, Microsoft adcenter doesn't register a view, and subsequently doesn't pay up.
Firefox/adblock hurts only the sites you visit. Doesn't greatly hurt the ad companies."

What it does mean, though, is that for a site that has a lot of Linux and Mac users, they're going to be force-fed MS's FUD and propaganda. - adude, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Digg is now going to use Microsoft ads instead of Google ads...... and everyone is freaking out! WTF? Who cares!
digg people usually claim Bush sees only in black and white, and yet they go ahead and abhor Microsoft (arg, still referring to it as M$) and anything it touches. Like Google is some saint because their motto is "Do no evil." Sure, Google has a lot of great products and I like the company's attitude and products, but that doesn't make Microsoft some evil corporation while Google is a freaking saint.
Also, the digg crowd keeps talking about how digg now sucks. (1.) Then why the hell are you still posting ON DIGG? (2.) Why? Sure, the comment system can use some tweaking, but I've actually gotten quite used to it. And yeah, search is in need of a desperate repair and an images section would probably be helpful, but those things don't make or break a site. People need to stop overreacting.
- serpentskiss, on 10/10/2007, -12/+17Well, not so much "the end as we know it". The site's got worse since the redesign anyway, with slow load times and buggy comment system.
- knowyourrights, on 10/10/2007, -44/+53I wonder why Digg isn't partnering with Google, yet prefers to go to bed with Antichrist. I believe we deserve an honest, straightforward answer from Mr. Rose. None of this bush league (no pun intended), Gonzalez answers.
- blowdart, on 10/10/2007, -21/+24So google isn't the antichrist? Get off your high horse for a moment; google are the people that scan your emails and never ever delete them even if you close your email account. Goggle are the people that say your search history will be deleted if you never visit a google site for 2 years. However visiting a page with adsense or google analytics counts as a visit to a google property. Goggle are the people who pimped out adsense to direct health care providers to purchase keywords to swap Michael Moore's expose. google are the people that bought doubleclick and is now being investigated by the FTC and the EU on privacy and anti-trust rumblings. google are the people involved in a lawsuit in North Carolina for taking incentives/kickbacks to setup there. etc. etc. But hey, it's ok, because they have a "Do no evil" motto, right?

- knowyourrights, on 10/10/2007, -10/+3Now that is what I call top grade, high octane good ol' *****. No matter who's on top, they'll have a huge target on their back.
- knowyourrights, on 10/10/2007, -12/+5There are a lot of reasons to resent Microsoft. Make no mistake about this. We all know of a gigantic corporation that refuse to do their share of debugging and allows their customers to do their debugging. That was an interesting invention. Imagine being able selling a whole lot of products that don't work, and letting your customers figure out how to improve them.
- knowyourrights, on 10/10/2007, -13/+4You all do realize that as of May 2007, there has only been a few hundred licenses of Vista sold in the entire Country of China. Their business model just doesn't scale, and I'd rather have my money not support their antiquated methods of business. Sure Microsoft is responsible for bringing computers to the average citizen, yet you'll never know what kind of impact their restrictions on changing their software has done to computer innovation. They might have created a gigantic stall in computer history.
- Yazilliclick, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7OMG you actually believe that? Time to get off Digg buddy and learn to use your brain again. Vista sold double the amount of boxed copies in it's first month than what XP did. Microsoft has already made a huge amount of money off of Vista around the world and will continue to do so for many years to come regardless of how many idiots on the interweb are convinced otherwise.
- johimself, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7No one is forcing you to use Windows. And who are you to argue with their business model? Wheres your multi-billion dollar a year turnover?
What MS do for computer innovation (certainly among average consumers/home users) is create a platform that is easily understood by large numbers of non technical people without much need for rertraining. There is a huge majority of internet users, for example, for whom "the internet" is identified by a blue E logo.
While this may not drive innovation for the technical people (who, by the way, know more than enough and have the motivation to choose alternative systems themselves) it does make use of computers widespread and their use is much more mainstream.
I am keen to hear what alternative you suggest to Microsoft's dominance of the market. Apple? Would we then not all have to buy Apple specific hardware? Linux? Which one?
- AlmostEvil, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7Money. In terms of websites using advertising pretty much everyone uses Google.
Microsoft are desperately seeking websites to use their advertising, so therefore they have most likely paid Digg a very large sum of money as an incentive to use them. Since Digg is a relatively large website MS are probably hoping it'll pay off long term.
- blowdart, on 10/10/2007, -21/+24So google isn't the antichrist? Get off your high horse for a moment; google are the people that scan your emails and never ever delete them even if you close your email account. MS knows they aren't looked at very kindly on digg (or they're viewed as old school) and they certainly want to change that. And yes, the "Highly Reliable Times" Get The Facts ads on the Linux/Unix section will certainly be interesting, and any frontpage editorial/moderator decisions will be very interesting.

By the middle of the 1990s, Gates may have been as powerful as the president in some ways, yet he remained as paranoid as a speed freak at the end of a very long binge. The proximate cause of his paranoia was Netscape. In May 1995, in a now-famous memo titled "The Internet Tidal Wave," Gates argued that the startup's browser held the potential to "commoditize the underlying operating system" - Windows. What worried him, Gates told me, wasn't merely the threat posed by the browser or other forms of middleware but the sudden momentum Netscape had gained in the industry. "Lightning struck," Gates said. "There was a belief that they were the exciting thing, they were the coming company. You'd go to their developer conferences, go to Marc Andreessen's press conferences, read the article about what flavor of pizza he ordered. That phenomenon was getting developers to pay a lot of attention to the Netscape browser." He added, "Expectations are a form of first-class truth: If people believe it, it's true." And people were believing in Netscape.

- mporcheron, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7... and then you compare the load times of pages with Digg's site (and comment pages). Digg, in terms of speed, is like a dead dog.
- Ninjab3ar, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9Reddit is like digg in its early days, except it didnt try to web 2.0-ify itself.
- noctu, on 10/10/2007, -3/+3its like saying I am going to stick with some crappy OS because it looks better *cough*vista*cough*
- akira117, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1Good thing I got my vista copy through msdn, and I've already turned off the stupid clear title bar.
They did add some good things to it though, but it is basically a $200 copy of windows blinds.
(looks like xp now lol)
- akira117, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1Good thing I got my vista copy through msdn, and I've already turned off the stupid clear title bar.
- 5555, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8That's what I thought when I first visited the site, but it doesn't take long to get used to it and then actually prefer it.
- lordtyros, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Yeah, reddit is owned by wired.com, dumbass.
- BloKKem, on 10/10/2007, -16/+8Why would anyone give a ***** about this?
- Septimus, on 10/10/2007, -4/+6Because a lot of diggers are paranoid and a bit slow. Google, MS, Yahoo... who cares where the adverts come from? Most won't see them, it's not going to influence what people post. This place is going down hill, and not because of this change. People here are completely irrational.
- Spr0k3t, on 10/10/2007, -5/+2You know, you're right... why would anyone give a ***** about microsoft?
- godamit, on 10/10/2007, -13/+5why? does adblock cares what ad to cut off?
- titorTT, on 10/10/2007, -15/+37digg down digg
- vampireblood, on 10/10/2007, -11/+60Bet Kevin Rose hates this and Wishes the company was Apple.
Alex is probably rolling around in laughter!- grayapple, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9Do you think they honestly care who is giving them the money - Their just happy their getting it!
- nottanner, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Listening to diggnation I've noticed that Kevin Rose will get on his knees for whoever throws money his way.
Personally, I don't think he cares one bit that Microsoft is throwing him money, especially if it buys him three or four more iPhones.
- ekso, on 10/10/2007, -23/+76Ok, that's it. I'm outta here. See you guys in Wikio, Reddit or Thoof or somewhere else.
- generalloy, on 10/10/2007, -12/+33You're not the only one thinking that, trust me.
- BenTM, on 10/10/2007, -7/+15+1
- Xiol, on 10/10/2007, -6/+10Everyone is welcome over at Reddit.
- FutureGuy, on 10/10/2007, -4/+3Cool does that mean the spam about linux and iphone will stop, sweet. see ya.
- ButterBuddha, on 10/10/2007, -11/+49this makes me sad...
- Snazz, on 10/10/2007, -10/+8Lol, there's Ads on this site? Oh that's right, the red [] symbols my Proxomitron filters them as.
Btw, save the "omg, you're costing the website by not seeing adverts" arguments, I've NEVER clicked on a banner/sidebar advert on anysite. - drcreek, on 10/10/2007, -6/+25Why would MS go to bed with a site that "usually" due to a high level of Apple fanboys (myself included) praises and basically advertises Apple?
- kevincannon, on 10/10/2007, -3/+8Because they're just selling online advertising. They'll make money, it really has nothing to do with Microsoft as a company. They just resell adspace for digg.
- buildafire, on 10/10/2007, -2/+0Thank you...finally someone with some intelligence. The ads are served via Microsoft...just like they serve Facebook right now. Last time I checked, Facebook is sky rocketing to the top of the charts. For a lot of people that "seem" to know what thwy are talking about...you sure don't.
- Spr0k3t, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Perhaps... oh I don't know... money? nah, they have too much of that.
- johimself, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2You're right - Microsoft should be advertising their products to Windows users.
Maybe you should get a flyer advertising the benefits of Vista in the Vista box.
Or a free 48 hour trial of Xbox Live with your 12 month Xbox Live subscription.
If they branched out a bit they could go and sell some ice to Eskimos - Kempachi, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Wow, why would I want to have financial influence at a site where my two main competitors are strongly promoted? Hmmmm.....
- jejones, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I suspect you have not followed Microsoft for very long. To Microsoft, it is not enough to win; all others must be destroyed. Digg has now been bought out--one less source of information that does not toe the MS propaganda line.
- kevincannon, on 10/10/2007, -3/+8Because they're just selling online advertising. They'll make money, it really has nothing to do with Microsoft as a company. They just resell adspace for digg.
- EbowUK, on 10/10/2007, -17/+25You think the Digg guys do this for the love of it? Maybe.
But it still needs to make money, and if they want to get into bed with M$, good for them. If it turns out to be a great big pile of ***** for site useability, people will leave - but can we wait and see how it turns out before bleating about it?
As long as M$ stay the hell away from editorial control, all's good for everyone.- clyde2801, on 10/10/2007, -3/+6That's a mighty big 'as long as'. Hope your right.
- PlancksCnst, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4Agreed. The claims that Microsoft will have editorial influence is completely baseless. There is no way Digg will let microsoft have influence over their content. As for the quality of ads - yes, Microsoft serves primarily flash-based ads. But dig ALREADY HAS horribly annoying animated flash ads (I clicked play on the flashblocker just to check - that resulted in a dell ad with swooshing letters that was pretty horrible). You guys are seriously overreacting.
- Threlly, on 10/10/2007, -10/+12I block em all anyhow
- Lemonblood, on 10/10/2007, -24/+74Today is the day Digg died.
- tdous, on 10/10/2007, -8/+13Oh ffs, grow up.
- vx69, on 10/10/2007, -28/+32Christ can you people ***** wait until the MS ads are in place before whining and bitching about them.
- Calcularius, on 10/10/2007, -6/+6No. and don't forget to ***** off.
- TechCF, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Ever been to MSN.com? Lots of BIG flash banners, almost as bad as the drivecleaner ads. We know M$ ads, and WE DO NOT WANT
- 5555, on 10/10/2007, -23/+62To all you l33t d00ds posting "I use adblock", do you not realize that Microsoft will now influence Digg decisions? Whether you view the ads or not, its presence will be felt.
- ISIfunded911, on 10/10/2007, -10/+5Exactly! Everyone who read Chomsky or who is not naive knows that Microsoft is now digg's main client. We (our brains) are the products digg and Microsoft are trading.
Ad-block all the way! - Septimus, on 10/10/2007, -6/+11I can see you're wearing your tin-foil hat while you post.
- ISIfunded911, on 10/10/2007, -10/+5Exactly! Everyone who read Chomsky or who is not naive knows that Microsoft is now digg's main client. We (our brains) are the products digg and Microsoft are trading.
- MasterDwarf, on 10/10/2007, -19/+137Marked as inaccurate. You're never in a 'partnership' with Microsoft.
- theratboy, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2g1
- hifiDesign, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3You're wrong... it's not a *marriage* — in a *partnership*, you can be bent over and continuously take it in the ass.
- obeleh, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1/me remembers this story http://www.digg.com/linux_unix/Linspire_Punked_by_Microsoft
Soon coming: http://www.digg.com/M$_punks/Digg_Punked_by_Microsoft ???
- ChrisWickenscom, on 10/10/2007, -17/+78Say bye bye to any Linux stories.
- baalzebub, on 10/10/2007, -11/+36if digg turns pro-microsoft and anti-linux i will remove digg from my bookmarks and never visit this website again and bad-mouth digg everywhere the topic comes up...
- CosmicJustice, on 10/10/2007, -7/+5Oooooh!!!! Well that oughta shut em down! I mean, if you bad-mouth them and everything. Thery're probably rethinking the decision right now.
- ThirdPrize, on 10/10/2007, -17/+8All the Linux users are going to desert Digg? Well, boo fscking hoo!
- toggo, on 10/10/2007, -3/+5This really isn't going to be an issue. They'll be advertisers.. they won't control the content of Digg.
- dartmanx, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6While I don't think that it's immediately going to be a huge issue, your opinion is VERY naive. How many TV/Radio shows got shut down because of pressure from their advertisers?
- Smegzor, on 10/10/2007, -4/+10Say hello to linux stories!
http://www.fsdaily.com
And they use the Digg interface :D - pickypg, on 10/10/2007, -3/+2Hopefully, because I am getting tired of seeing Ubuntu crap all over the site.
- baalzebub, on 10/10/2007, -11/+36if digg turns pro-microsoft and anti-linux i will remove digg from my bookmarks and never visit this website again and bad-mouth digg everywhere the topic comes up...
- cannabinemsi, on 10/10/2007, -12/+38smells like no more good news about linux, apple, sony or whatever company is in MS's way,
- ISIfunded911, on 10/10/2007, -20/+19***** the Microsoft Mafia! Go away!
I will never click on your brainwashing ads to consume ever more eventually polluting our planet to death.
Green debian anti-corps- CosmicJustice, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5If nobody ever clicked on the ads then Digg would cease to exist. Who do you think pays for this?
- taintedzodiac, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2You honestly don't think that Digg produces any waste that is polluting the environment? Every single person in America does, and to pick on the larger entities for producing a larger percentage is just silly.
Now, if every single food and drink you consume is made from recycled goods, you have ground. No, no I thought not. None of us have ground.- init100, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1"You honestly don't think that Digg produces any waste that is polluting the environment?"
Of course it does. It is a US-based site, and most of the United States runs off coal power plants, the dirtiest power option there is.
- init100, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1"You honestly don't think that Digg produces any waste that is polluting the environment?"
- colonels1020, on 10/10/2007, -20/+56Microsoft is going to ruin Digg...
- Yazilliclick, on 10/10/2007, -7/+111. Digg already sucks ass and has for a long time.
2. MS isn't changing anything at Digg other than the ads and if you were comming here for them then...
3. You're an idiot - Spr0k3t, on 10/10/2007, -4/+5Going to?
- leatherscot, on 10/10/2007, -9/+2Yes - Going to. Digg is a FANTASTIC achievement - maybe there are functions that could be improved, but to say digg sucks is just sheer ignorance!
- joshman5k, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Just like they ruined apple in '97
- josi81, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2Digg ruined themselves
- leatherscot, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1If digg is ruined - why are you still here?
- modad, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0...because we have no friends.
- leatherscot, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1If digg is ruined - why are you still here?
- Yazilliclick, on 10/10/2007, -7/+111. Digg already sucks ass and has for a long time.
- bernmeister, on 10/10/2007, -12/+40Just like that catchy tune... "Its the end of the world as we know it"... I'm going to start singing "Its the end of digg as we know it but Kevin feels fine.
- leatherscot, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2I doubt Kevin feels fine - This is probably Jay's deal
- audiophiliac, on 10/10/2007, -7/+5Maybe the extra cash will aid in funding bandwidth as well as maybe an almost full production diggnation video
- jone007, on 10/10/2007, -15/+3wtf all are saying against MS and using their Windows software as free , you all suc*ers
- waddling, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Not all of us dude! Haven't install MS anything on my machines since the 90's and proud of it.
- tdous, on 10/10/2007, -8/+2You need a more fulfilling life if that's the sort of thing you take pride in.
- serpentskiss, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Yeh. Got a single OEM Vista install that came with a new machine, so it's legit, but use Ubuntu/Debian mostly. STFU *****
- CatalystGhost, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3Linux all the way right here, bitch.
Also, what the hell is with censoring "suckers"? Are you some stupid 10 year old bitch who thinks that's a bad word or something? Is mommy gonna yell at you for it? Pussy.
- waddling, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Not all of us dude! Haven't install MS anything on my machines since the 90's and proud of it.
- fragsta, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Digg has advertisements??
- NeilSkoglund, on 10/10/2007, -5/+6why is digg going with Microsoft when they use LAMP?! this makes no sense other than Microsoft must be giving them allot of money upfront. i mean if they were going with them for a user point of view, everyone would choose google, and if they were going for a business opportunity to provide businesses to put ads on digg, google has the largest share....
WHY OH WHY ?!!?- Septimus, on 10/10/2007, -4/+1Yes because Google is pure and good and looks after small fluffy animals in their offices and MS kills kittens and orphan children.
STFU.
