- argh44z, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12I like YouTube, but Metacafe does most things better:
- less pixelated content
- bigger upload limit
- better comments (threaded)
- NSFW content, if you choose to view it
- non-video content
- generally a better more web2-ish interface
OTOH, YouTube is better at:
- it's much bigger
- doesn't require latest flash (good for my workplace) - baxtermaddux, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11yeah, cause we all know how horrible competition is for the free market
- junk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Maybe Yahoo just woke up to the fact that they don't need to buyout competing services for *all* of their current properties.
The dip in traffic could be associated with the time of year, college kids home for the holidays and not surfing sites like metacafe on their parents computers - who knows?
The only thing I can say for sure is that comscore can suck it. - krum, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12What's Metacafe?
- bitterg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9The dip is probably with comscore, not Metacafe.
I find stories like this kind of annoying. "Rumor" on "rumor" on "rumor," all to check on the status of another rumor. - josegutz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7It's where all the cats that play Metal Gear Solid hang out and sip lattes...
- kenvsryu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6If you want to see youTube videos with ads go to metacafe.
- Ninjab3ar, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9Who needs more than one YouTube?
- wormeyman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I feel that metacafes's higher resolution and less compression make it better, not to mention their producer rewards program actually puts money into producers of quality content unlike youtube which as far as i know doesn't have such a program.
- firemillen2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Is Yahoo still online? Top 5 reasons Yahoo blew it:
5) didn't buy Google when they were using the search engine for its searches
4) didn't increase visibility of Overture till it was too late
3) didn't go video fast enough
2) HIRING SEMEL, MR. HOLLYWOOD TO RUN A TECH COMPANY
1) DIDN'T SELL OUT TO MICROSOFT 2 YEARS AGO.
HOW CAN YOU GOD DAMN ***** US AS BADLY AS YHOO? WE SHOULD ASK AOL.
WHAT'S SCARY IS THAT ONE DAY WE'LL BE SAYING THE SAME THING ABOUT GOOGLE. - socokoolaid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Maybe it's cause Metacafe's flash player did (or still does?) suck 100% CPU in Fire Fox making you unable to watch their videos, crashing Fire Fox, and if your not quick enough locking up your system.
- firemillen2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Why would yhoo buy this site for 300 mill? it's stupid waste of money. the reason youtube was valuable was because it was a household name. you has ever heard of metacafe. it's like sony buying grouper or whatever the ***** that video site was. who's ever heard of metacafe? so yhoo buys them for 300 mill and pump another 100 mill into making it a distant second to youtube? what's the ***** point?
- gardnmi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Dip in porn, dip in traffic.....any questions?
- parrotscience, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I have to put in the 'scam' part again. I was asked by Metacafe to submit my video to them after they saw it on YouTube. I put it on (and I have an email trail for this) and they put me in the Producer reward program. Months later and I'm approaching 20,000... suddenly I'm no longer in the program. Upon contacting them they tell me I never was. After sending them the previous emails they tell me "I reviewed the matter. I can put your video as a candidate for the Producer Rewards program and reject it when it reaches 20,000 views "
Long story short... I don't have anything on there anymore.
Perhaps it's been good for some, but my experience hasn't left me very happy. - lazn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You do realize that Google purchased Youtube.. thus I expect Google Video to be of limited lifespan.
- sjalloul, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@krum
Now he/she is on the same page! - freff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I hadn't heard that yet, and I hope that's not true lazn. I know it's a bit redundant now that Google owns youtube, but Google Video supports a much better video resolution than youtube does currently, and there's something to be said for an option without all the inane comments.
- stephdau, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2It might also be due to their producer rewards programs increasingly feeling like a scam to content producers who see their files filling their end of the bargain (20,000+ views, w/ rating of 3+) and then suddenly being flagged as non eligible when it's time to pay up, with no further explanations than a hazy list of rules which only becomes available after the fact (ie: once [re-]re-flagged, no on upload or signup). And I mean, the files are accepted at upload time, then they are accepted for public distribution through an approval process, to finally being rejected after passing all of the program's requirements. Shafting the source your content producers (or at the very least making them feel this way) rarely is a good business model. All I know is that from now on, I'm sticking with Google Video, even though it's just in Beta.
- stephdau, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Please disregard the scam part of my comment. I have been proven wrong.
- xamox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have actually started using metacafe over youtube. It doesn't have all the gayass video blogs plus you get paid $5 per 1,000 views of your video. The top earn has made $24k which doesn't sound too bad in my opinion. You only get ads on high viewed videos.
Plus the title of this article is wrong. The number of unique visitors went down, but the number of page views went from 97million to 101million. I've built websites and ran ad services and that's what really matters, not unique visitors but pageviews. - TheDrunkMonkey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2It is just like Youtube, but one thing they have that Youtube doesn't is producer rewards.
http://www.metacafe.com/producer_rewards/ - freff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1pssttt....
Your caps lock is showing.
I dug you up anyway. - smokeyc4, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0I moved my controversial show SmokeyC4 to metacafe and its the best thing that ever happened for me,I like metacafe much better than youtube and I will never go back to youtube again,I am staying at metacafe permanently and have no problem supporting the site and bringing in many of my fans. I agree with you xamox Coyote aka SmokeyC4
- stephdau, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0lazn: Yeah, that's the great unknown part. Could go both ways I guess, but you're right that given the huge community, YouTube is probably going to end up drawing the long straw.
- sjalloul, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Metacafe....who???? Never heard of them, I am being sarcastic! But it's all about Youtube, just think about it for a moment, how many sites do you know drive traffic to Metacafe. And when I say site, I mean like MySpace, Facebook...should I continue.....?
- foxxynews, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I am glad to see we aren't the only ones taken in by the Metacafe Producer Rewards scam. We had two FoxxyNews videos that were building traffic, and once they reached the magic 20,000 view threshold, Metacafe decided to use the excuse that our content wasn't "family friendly". When looking at some of the other videos that did get Producer Award status, there were plenty of things that were a lot more "adult" than ours. And if our videos aren't "family friendly" then why do they appear with the Family Filter turned on? While we weren't expecting to make a lot of money, we did expect them to come through with what they promised. And now after I complained to them, they have removed our account. I guess that is easier than explaining things. Can we sue someone in Israel in small claims court?
- freff, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3I frequently have problems loading Metacafe videos on my browser. It's gotten to the point that I just skip Metacafe links. If others have similar problems using non IE browsers, that may account for some of the drop in traffic. I not really sure, but that's my experience.
- macewan, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2If Yahoo! is to eventually sell to Microsoft it needs all bases covered.
- reviver, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1This is probably because MetaCafé is the toilet bowl of the internet and cannot compete with YouTube, Break, etc.
