MediaDefender Stock Plunges Due to Leaked Emails
torrentfreak.com — It has been a rough year for MediaDefender and their parent company ArtistDirect. This September nearly 700mb of MediaDefender ’s emails leaked to the public. Initially it didn’t seem to affect the stock price much, but after the financial consequences became apparent, their net worth plunged.

- trickyt, on 12/23/2007, -0/+7Suspension? That's peanuts. From the sound of the comments on the article it's more like watching the school bully get tarred and feathered during recess, then held down while every bullied kid goes and kicks him in the face.

- tao52nyc, on 12/23/2007, -0/+10It keeps going down like that, they'll be delisted very soon...and that's pretty much the end for them. John Lennon used to call this "instant karma".
- sbgskl, on 12/23/2007, -0/+2lol @ misunderstanding of "goodwill" in accounting context.
- sfacets, on 12/23/2007, -0/+5Make them walk the plank...
- Micktion, on 12/23/2007, -9/+2Something stinks with this story. The most interesting part of the article I think is....
"Unfortunately for them, one of their employees was stupid enough to forward all his work email to his Gmail account, without using a proper password."
WTF? Who "hacked" his gmail? How did they know his email address? How did they hack it?
Either there's a much bigger story hear about an organised group of people getting access to gmail accounts using brute force attacks, or the more likely the employ actually deliberately leaked the emails by sending them to a gmail account and then giving out the password to 3rd parties.- Markpdotcom, on 12/23/2007, -1/+5I seriously don't know where to start with this. I think from the Diggs you'll know you're wrong. Very wrong!
- Groovemaster, on 12/27/2007, -0/+1Actually, people dugg him down because his comment forced them to think, not because he's wrong.
- Micktion, on 12/28/2007, -0/+1Perhaps I'm really stupid but which part am I wrong about?
The part where I say a story about people systematically hacking gmail accounts would be bigger than a silly company attempting to stop the unstoppable trade of copyright material over bittorrent?
Or where I suggest the employee actually colluded with 3rd parties to leak the info using a gmail account?
I think I got dugg down because people thought I was sympathising with MediaDefender or the greedy media companies behind them, they were of course wrong, I have no sympathy for them at all. I just like to know the truth, which seems to be some what lacking in this story.
- Markpdotcom, on 12/23/2007, -1/+5I seriously don't know where to start with this. I think from the Diggs you'll know you're wrong. Very wrong!

"Is this -Good- for the company?" - TStanNY, on 12/23/2007, -0/+3MediaDefender FTL!
- peaceninja, on 12/23/2007, -2/+0Man when their emails leaked earlier in the year I thought "it would be awesome if there was some website where I could 'short' their stock knowing that it will plummet". Does anyone know if there are any sites that let you short stock??
- aimhelix, on 12/23/2007, -0/+2Haha.. owned. "Future in anti-piracy" - when are they going to learn that hackers are always going to be five steps ahead when it comes to this?
- aaroh, on 12/23/2007, -0/+2damn should have shorted the stock after the leak, add to my list of should of, could of, would of, the one that got away
- funk49, on 12/23/2007, -0/+4Holy *****, I never knew ARTISTDirect owned MediaDefender. AD was a cool little company started by the guys that founded Lollapalooza and everything went well until the IPO. I guess it makes sense for a company so ahead of the tech curve in the music business in the early days attempt to be the counter to P2P movement. Shocking...
BTW, how much does it really matter that their stock took a hit.,.it's been delisted for years. - mr5150, on 12/23/2007, -0/+1Screw Media Defender and all the ***** scumbag investors who dumped a ***** in stock value who were banking on profits from nefarious activities.
Makes me smile! - dr234, on 12/23/2007, -0/+3What are your favorite mediadefender emails? I like http://mediadefender-defenders.com/msg03633.html

- ferrofluid, on 12/23/2007, -0/+1It was obvious to anybody with a brain that when the emails, and detailed news of their tactics became public, they were doomed.
The internal emails plainly shows them to be mostly incompetent and not very tech savvy too, just a matter of time before it happened..
- Kwipper, on 12/24/2007, -0/+1GOOD!
