- popothebright, on 10/11/2007, -5/+75Like THE IPHONE?!?!?!
Please. This is one *****-sucking review if I've ever seen one. - calmanny, on 10/11/2007, -4/+73"but like the iPhone, Pownce miraculously lives up to the hype."
What? The iPhone isn't out until tomorrow. How could it have lived up to the hype? - locd32, on 10/11/2007, -15/+68STEP 1: Copy a bunch of existing software and mash it into one
STEP 2: Put Kevin Rose's name on it
STEP 3: ....
STEP 4: PROFIT! - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+44I haven't used it, so i can't knock it yet but, it seems 10 mb file size for transfer falls into the "lame" catagory. I also don't see paying for it for 100MB transfer either
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -3/+45What a novel concept. Use your existing project to spread positive propaganda about your future projects!
- gnychis, on 10/11/2007, -6/+45stop trying to shove it down our throats
- senjutsuka, on 10/11/2007, -1/+35Maybe Im missing the point but this seems to do everything my gmail account does. I mean you upload pics to friends(gmail and lists), you can chat(in page gtalk or desktop clien), create events and RSVPs(Calendar) except to get full capability there is a fee unlike g-stuff.
Is there something Im missing? I mean I have a desktop and web client for gtalk... Gmail comes w/ online storage and you can even mount it as a harddrive. I guess I need to test it and see. Someone send the skeptic a key so I can change my mind. I do love digg/diggnation but this just seems like something thats a rehash on whats already out there.
senjutsuka at gmail.com - Cl1mh4224rd, on 10/11/2007, -1/+27Can someone who who doesn't come across as hanging off of Kevin's pubes explain to us why anyone should care about Pownce?
What will it do differently? What will it do better?
(And, seriously, Mashable.com... please use a different font. Lucida Grande is barely legible on Windows and an LCD.) - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -6/+29Copied from the last story about pounce.. pownce.. whatever.. learn to freakin spell
"I see Kevin is following his standard MO. Stea.. er take inspiration from something other people are already doing and useing his D list celebrity status to make it popular."
marked as spam - norbiu, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2010MB file limit? We're not in 1999 anymore.
And for that $20 / year you could at least set the file limit a bit higher. - RandomGuySteve, on 10/11/2007, -4/+17Because it's self-congratulatory linkspam. It always gets frontpaged.
- manifestdata, on 10/11/2007, -7/+19Blogspam.
- jasnmb, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12Email, is that you?
- fullphaser, on 10/11/2007, -2/+12nothing says news like digg fanaticism. i'll stick with you know the service that everyone actually uses.
- neutrino15, on 10/11/2007, -2/+11Kevin, you should make the file sharing p2p instead of server based. This way, I could send a really large to my friend for free.. Kinda like pando, but make it work...
Also, work on your steve jobs reality distortion field.. That will help a lot.. - Bdog2g2, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8gee...ya think?
- danhuard, on 10/11/2007, -9/+17just to be thorough, it's Daniel Burka not me, Dan Huard, who is involved with Pownce. It's a great app tho, I use it!
- misterjangles, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9Oh good - now my aunt can send her "email this to 10 people in 10 minutes" messages to me in real time!
- Razster, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9Welcome to Hype 101.
Kevin is just in it for a bit more, so this is why it is on the front page - There is NOTHING new about this whole Pownce thing, it is the same damn thing as everything else out there.
Again! This is Adobe trying to out best Microsoft's new Silverlight. Silverlight will be much more flexable than AIR will be, I've seen and used both and I like Silverlight much more. XAML! - championchap, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9Umm, isnt the point of the serice only to send songs and documents? Not "Adobe CS3 - Keygen Included!!11!"
- Chip_whitly, on 10/11/2007, -5/+11I don't think Kevin rose is thinking carefully on this. It seems like he just wants to make a quick dollar.
- neoform, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6or maybe digg has editors that control what gets to the frontpage and digging is just a way for them to pick what's going to get there..
- OBKenobi, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8It's just an app. Not particularly exciting. Easy to use I guess?
Maybe it will eventually integrate with our Digg accounts? E.g. so people can attach illegal files to the comments, etc. - tech42er, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6What was IM 2.0?
- evilpettingzoo, on 10/11/2007, -9/+14People seem to get angrier and angrier everyday on digg. I want to try it... don't really care who made it just like to play with new stuff..... I'll reserve judgment until I get my hands on it.
- Claw787, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Maybe Kevin Rose's vote is given more weight in the Digg algorithm?
- Cl1mh4224rd, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7Remember: It's only evil when Microsoft does it. :-P
- constantskeptic, on 10/11/2007, -3/+8crapola spam
- ryborg, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7Yea, what the hell is so revolutionary about Pownce??? Frontpage worthy, not so much.
- Duhitsmichael, on 10/11/2007, -8/+12Who gives a ***** about Kevin, anyway?
- Nick22, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6I say they up the size limit to at least 20-25mb, 10mb is way too small, really only enough to send songs and documents
- Darkness123, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6I wonder how many Digg Frontpage stories was worth this review.
- Floodle, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6breaking news! - mashable.com renamed bribable.com
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5no really .... ASS CLOWNS
- Razster, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Exactly, it is gmail only on your desktop, which I don't like things on my desktop - thus is why I use gmail on my FF browser... I don't need to download Adobe AIR
Not to mention the length it take to install AIR.
Microsoft at least has a goal for Silverlight, 20sec or less to install, but still... it is another Desktop app which I dislike.
Kevin is probably getting an ass load of $$$,$$$ from Adobe. - neutrino15, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5Kevin Rose + iPhone = UberFrontPageStory
- ryanspahn, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4I looked at the page and saw all the copy that describes it and lost interest. Is there a 30 second youtube video that shows what it is does?
- benlindelof, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I don't know... I just... don't know.
I can do all this in multiple windows. Why would I want to do it in Frames? I hate frames.
Anyway.... it's interesting stuff. - tomzer1, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Nothing in that article convinced me that it is anything more than just IM+Email. I'll still try it this weekend, but I doubt I'll be able to get my friends to move to it unless it works really smoothly across platforms. I have a mix of Windows and Mac friends, and IM file transfers never work right much of the time.
- admirabumblebee, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4That's something new for Kevin?
Do you not remember on TSS when he had a segement about Digg, trying oh-so-hard to act like he had just found it and had nothing to do with it, followed by the awkward moment when leo asked if it was his project?
Nothing new. - gcopenhaver, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3that was your 4th comment ever on digg, and all of them were spam related to that chatstat program...please don't bother coming back unless you're going to stop posting spam
- jjb123, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I agree, hell, I can get 20 mb or more out of gmail.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4It getting hit with negatives because he's purely riding on the success of digg. whats worse, he's exploiting diggs users by getting stories like this in fromt of way more people than anyone else could. thats kinda cheesy. the fact that the app is a re-mash doesn't help. and his title at pownce is like lead brainstormer, so in eseence he doesn't do anything there either.
kevin's fifteen minutes are WAY over. the sad thing is that there is some vc somewhere jacking off to the notion of funding this blight. ugh. - Razster, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5Because no one cares about these apps, but some how they manage to make front page with 32 comments... Wtf!
No one cares because we all have gmail or should.
Wake up. - IceDog, on 10/11/2007, -3/+6First, I'm not sucking up. I could not care less if this makes it or dies like so many other startups. And it's not my kind of thing I don't get into IM anymore. And I'm only an occasional participant in Digg (really). But why does everyone seem to hate this idea? It's like he's become MS or Google or something that everyone wants to attack. Geez, give it a chance before you name it as junk. And hype? How could anyone seriously even compare this to iPhone's hype? It's not even close. iPhone's hype is right up there with with all the Paris Hilton crap. I hate iPhone and all because it really has been crammed down our throats. Here on Digg the iPhone stories made me stop visiting as much, just to wait till it dies down some. Which hasn't really yet. BTW, I wish that could be a new feature on digg.. to disallow certain subject stories. (for example, again iPhone).
Nothing personal against anyone, and I don't care if Pownce makes it big or not. Just seems odd all the dumping going on here. It's not the first 32 dig story to hit the front page. Now is it? Which now it has a lot more anyway. - Duhitsmichael, on 10/11/2007, -3/+6Look at all the Kevin ass-kissers digging down anyone critical of Kevin.
/Watches himself get dugg down. - allengeer, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I don't foresee step 4 actually working.
- SVPirate, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I've never been too hot on these Web 2.0 things, but this looks genuinely useful. If digg is any gauge then it'll start of basic and useful and eventually grow to be very powerful.
- Misos, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Exactly. The only point in using something other than e-mail (if your IM file transfers don't work) is the file-size limit, and 10mb is pretty standard.
This thing is goofy and pointless. -
