- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+55pfft. Wiley Coyote did the same thing years ago.
- gcnaddict, on 10/12/2007, -4/+45This isn't a rail gun. It's a giant crossbow-ish thing which uses a carbon fiber "bowstring". Railguns pull MANY more Gs than that. Anyone inside a capsule propelled by a railgun would be turned into a puree from the force of the shot.

"Said man in the Rail Gun story wins 2006 Darwin Award" - t0dd, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3220 miles?! he has about as much of a chance as this guy: http://www.castletown.org.im/tinbaths/images2005/flight.jpg
- fyngyrz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+26In other news, vultures in the area are looking quite hopeful.
- Enitime, on 10/12/2007, -0/+21"This guy's either the ballsiest mofof I've ever seen, or the next darwin awards winner."
No reason he can't be both. - mentor, on 10/12/2007, -2/+23Seconded, this is nothing to do with Rail Guns.
- devindotcom, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19Wouldn't a "rail gun" be something where a piece of metal is propelled by magnetic coils?
Isn't this more of a ... slingshot?
In any case, this guy's dead meat. Cool anyway. - seeSharp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17I just hope the company that makes the carbon-fiber bowstring isn't "ACME"!
- kevinmotel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17dugg for the tile of the machine: the RUSH, of the Rapid Up SuperHigh
- swanny89, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16I would think that a parachute would be better than hydrogen peroxide rockets. This guy's either the ballsiest mofof I've ever seen, or the next darwin awards winner.
- OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13That's no railgun like I've ever seen. I detect shenanigans.

if it was me i've be taking a dump pre take off to try avoid embarresing photos later. - SirSid, on 05/27/2009, -1/+13Would have been cooler with a video but still pretty cool. Check out the Pic
- otaking, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12lmao dude look at your name and then read your comment again
titlesaysitall...
yes...yes it does...
now go look at the 2 titles and compaire...one is very long...and the other says "Rail Gun" - gh02t, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Depends on what you are wearing.
- crashflow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Actually you should be worried that Mexicans get their hands on this. Even with a wall on the border, they can use this to fly over it and start looking for work in....Canada.
- winampman2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I don't want to watch someone die. :(
- DWatch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Unlike a rocket, the g-load is not sustained. You will only have g-forces as long as you are under acceleration, which means, as soon as you clear the machine, you are no longer accelerating, you are slowing down due to air friction. The human body can sustain quick shots of high G without blacking out. A split second or two of 40Gs was tolerated by some dude in a rocket chair in the 1950's. I forget his name, but he was a doctor doing research on the effects of g-forces on the human body. He was shot down a rail towards a water tank. The 40 G's happened as he hit the water. The only ill effect he suffered was a red out of the eyes as the blood vessels burst in them. He recovered, though.
- Chompy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Dibs on his stereo.
- drbroccoli, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9He could also get anal fissures. Fighter pilots often get those from excessive G's. It's weird. Under excessive force, your anus will tear wider.
- skags, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8That's right drbroccoli, this contraption will literally tear him a new one.
- heymark, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8A video of him saying he's going to do it?
- noobalicious, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8How many of us are waiting for the YouTube video of this guy being horribly mutilated and disfigured? But this could be THE best Darwin Award *ever*... unless he already has kids, then he's DQ'd.
- kawai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7BREAKING NEWS
"Local man prequalify for the prestigious Darwin Award" - manicleek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7"so if its an electricity powered crossbow, it's still a railgun."
If you keep reading the wikipedia article, it says a rail gun fires a projectile by accelerating it between two electromagnetically charged rails. So no, a crossbow cannot be a rail gun - mentor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Humans can only withstand sustained 9g while remaining conscious; fighter pilots pull 9G turns, but they have special equipment to help them. It depends on which part of the body that is withstanding the acceleration, the cardiovascular system tends to go first.
However, there was that guy who was put on a rocket sled, and experienced something like 100g when slowing down. He passed out and his retinas detached. He was in a bad way for...a while. I'm fairly sure ejection seats hit you with more than 9g too, as you pass out and lose an inch or two.
BTW, it's a little g rather than big one, as that is Earth's gravitational acceleration, whereas big G is the constant of proportionality for the Newtonian gravitational force. - lbjazz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Not if he has already reproduced.
- HackWithRamzi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I'm also "native" american, and I agree 100% with Loonacy. The legal immigrants are great people, as are some of the illegal ones. But, it is ILLEGAL. Either change the laws, or enforce them.
- 7of7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I could swear my physics prof kept saying that humans can only stand 9 Gs.
- spectre_25gt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5So where does the jet engine fit in?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6hope he doesnt miscalculate and reach escape velocity.
- lotrfan7007, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5i really have no idea why people are modding you up, if a person could reach escape velocity with only a 24' crossbow and a small jet engine, do you really think NASA and the like would spend massive amounts of money on huge chemical rockets?
- aldenhg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5This guy was featured in Chuck Palahniuk's book Stranger Than Fiction (the chapter called 'Human Error'). He's led an... interesting... life. Russian bride into bestiality, skydiving accidents and the like.
- Jibberish, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Yea someone beat me to it, but I think we have a Darwin award nominee in our midst.
- mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5a video of his body freezing if he reaches 5 miles up and then the exploding flesh and guts once he hits the ground?
- Loonacy, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9I'm a "native" american, and I'm neither xenophobic, racist, or an ***** (or so i'd like to believe). I speak spanish, work with several native mexicans who are working in the country LEGALLY, and they don't bother me at all. Illegal immigrants, on the other hand, do more damage than just the "OMG they're stealing our jobs!" etc. I received a letter from the IRS a few years ago telling me I was in trouble for not reporting the income I had made in California. Since I've been to California once in my life (when i was 13, went to Disneyland) I was of course very confused. Turns out, some illegal immigrant had used my SSN and name to work here. I'm not sure how they got my information, as I'm usually very careful about it, but they did. If he had come into the country legally, on the other hand, then he wouldn't have needed to steal someone else's identity. This is one of the biggest reasons I'm for locking down our borders.
ILLEGAL immigrants are just that... illegal. They break one law coming in, and then they break more laws to work here. Other than that, I'm VERY left-wing, especially for a resident of Utah. - Fengpost, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The thing is he will test it with giant fiberglass arrow. Just wait until he is arrested as a terrorist for shooting down a 747 with a crossbow!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -9/+13haha you're funny!!
btw, are you a native american or just one more xenophobic racist *****? - tegulizard13, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I saw some people commenting on how this thing is in no way a railgun, where did the poster of this article get that from anyway >.< ? Nobody actually said what a railgun is (correctly at least), so for the people who dont know already, or were too lazy or uninterested to look it up for themselves (which is really a shame, cause railguns are pretty sweet). The term 'railgun' referrs to a specific method of electromagnetic linear acceleration. the Wikipedia entry isnt that ambiguous at all, just the header. It goes in to the theory and everything, as well as a more detailed description of how everything works. Sombody mentioned acceleration using coils; that would be a gauss gun, which is a completely different concept. A railgun uses two parallel rails and a conductive armature of some sort, the flowing electricity creates an electromagnetic field which causes the armature (and projectile, which may be the armature) to fly out the front... bad description, meh.
for those of you who want more detail:
http://powerlabs.org/railgun2.htm
and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Railgun
become obsessed. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7why stop there. "native" american indians immagrated to the americas via the land bridge some 12,000 years ago.
so you see they really aren't anymore native then anyone else. - Eronysis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Funny how he is super stylized skinny and lean in the artwork... look at him in the lab pictures. The guy is easily 30-40pounds overweight. I would consider certain roller coasters risky for someone like that....
- Chompy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Why is gh02t modded down? He's right, it *does* depend on what you're wearing. As an example, fighter pilots wear suits designed to allow them to withstand much higher G forces than they could without 'em.
- pixelwerx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Wow! He's going to die.
This should be fun to watch. - neoian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Sounds like a pretty cool way to die.
- mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+46 G's.. yeah right. a crossbow would put a couple dozen g's on him..
- gh02t, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Found a pic of the machine (possibly, doesn't look completely real)
http://www.uberreview.com/wp-content/uploads/2006/05/liftoff.jpg
also, check out this guy's wikipedia article
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brian_Walker - ACalcutt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3hmm...nothing to do today...so I'm just going to launch myself with a crossbow...
