MPAA Silently Drops Case Against BitTorrent Site
torrentfreak.com — In 2005, DVDr-core was the first BitTorrent site that was targeted by the MPAA outside the US. A classic story: Man runs site, man gets sued over site, nothing more is ever heard. Whilst in most cases, this means that the defendant bowed to pressure, paid an out of court settlement, and promised not to do it again, that is not the case here.

- AsSubtleAsABrik, on 05/04/2008, -14/+79There's nothing I enjoy more than looking in someone's profile and seeing his or her comments riddled with digg memes in an attempt to increase the size of their e-penis by +1 digg.
"i see what you did there"
"WIN?! or FAIL????"
"***** THE MPAA!"
Those are just on your first page. I gave you the benefit of the doubt and checked your comment history though, here's a nice group of 5 comments in a row: "EPIC WIN", "WIN", "2038 FTW", "OGC", "ceiling tree FTW".
You really know how to add to a conversation.- JMilton, on 05/04/2008, -24/+2You enjoy e-penis? o.O
- arcooke, on 05/04/2008, -8/+59I absolutely despise this new "generation" of internet users. Anyone who says anything like win, fail, epic, ftw, lawl, lulz, etc is instantly added to my own personal *****. It's annoying and immature. It's not funny, it's not creative; it's stupid. I've got a block list on Digg a mile long full of people that say this garbage.
- GravitySpec, on 05/04/2008, -2/+45I guess those damn kids need to get off your lawn as well?

- Phyltre, on 05/04/2008, -4/+11You really think they're a "new" generation? These memes and types of communication have been around for years in concept, seven years minimum, which is about as long as most people have been actively on the internet. And in fact, you find some of the same style gags and humor in early copies of Mad Magazine from decades ago.
It's just comedy, man, but great way to blow it out of proportion and make it your personal vendetta, as though that's going to change anything.- DangerMouse9, on 05/04/2008, -2/+6It fails to be funny when it's done every other comment.
- doctorfungi, on 05/04/2008, -4/+7I'd been using the word "epic" for years before it became popular on the internet. It's an epic word.

- CynicSight, on 05/04/2008, -1/+3I see what you did there.
- SargedeathXmode, on 05/04/2008, -3/+1Sadly, most of the same people who look down on digg memes also bury people with disagreeing views despite their informative posts and arguments, and also digg up digg memes who attack the people with said disagreeing views... That, or political threads are full of digg pro-obama memes that outnumber people who present coherent posts expressing their obama, clinton, edwards, etc views... Now back on topic, i'm rather certain that everyone, digg meme or informed poster, would agree that the record industries' actions are despicable.

- AntzNZ, on 05/04/2008, -6/+5No, new mainstream music is. There's heaps of awesome more underground bands, though I can't be too sure about other genres but 2007 was a pretty kickass year for metal.

DethKlok may be a funny show, but as far a the "band's" music goes, it's actually pretty weak.
But you know, allot of generas wish they could have the undying underground force that metal has. good to see more artists's labels choosing to opt for DRM-free tracks on itunes too.

- Beamerboy, on 05/04/2008, -1/+13I should explain that there is no confirmation as to whether or not the case has been dropped. I received a letter in November 2005 stating they were filing for a summary judgement on December 15th 2005 (or around that date) and I have heard nothing since. It seems unlikely that a judgement was made or I would have received official notification from the court, which I have never received.
Whereas this is an important issue and I appreciate the support people have shown, as far as I am concerned this MPAA issue is long dead. I never think about the case and I have no intention to start thinking about it again, it is in the past and I have moved on with my life. My focus now lies in the protection of privacy and I am hoping to soon be starting my Masters in Law focusing on technology, privacy and related human rights. Most of my time at the moment it taken up by the campaign to stop Phorm deploying Deep Packet Inspection and Profiling technology throughout the UK broadband infrastructure in order to spy on everything the British public do on-line for the purpose of behavioural advertising. It is a very serious issue and has been described as illegal by leading scholars and legal experts infringing on our rights to privacy. I would much rather people were supporting that fight than supporting stuff I did 2.5 years ago, although as I said, that support is appreciated.

- Beamerboy, on 05/04/2008, -1/+5I beg to differ, the lawsuit is in the US I am in the UK and am a UK citizen. Why would I pay any attention to a lawsuit in a court with no jurisdiction over me. I gave them all the attention their suit merits, which is none.
Alexander Hanff- PHiZ187, on 05/04/2008, -1/+1First of all, it's just sloppy and wrong. You're failing to handle your business. Second, foreign judgments absolute can be enforced against foreign parties. Your countries ***** stupid libel laws do it all the time.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enforcement_of_foreig ... - familynight, on 05/04/2008, -0/+1it does make sense to keep track of these things, but he would get a chance to challenge the enforcement of a foreign judgment in his nation's courts, and the judgment could be rendered invalid for a variety of reasons. he could basically retry the case in england, forcing the mpaa to go through all the trouble of fighting the challenge in his home country. it can actually make a lot of sense not to appear before a foreign court. transnational or international law is a complex and difficult field and any decisions about it should be made with the consultation of a lawyer specializing in the field.

- futureisours, on 05/04/2008, -0/+4Never count on the MPAA to forget anything. If this guy knows what he's doing, he really needs to follow the court's procedures to get the case dismissed whether it's just filing paperwork or a hearing. I think in many places, he can have it automatically dismissed with a year of inactivity. Otherwise, they can proceed at any time.
