This is digg, not an e-mail; therefore, you do not need to end all your comments with your name. Furthermore, digg has a neat feature where it shows who wrote what comment. Check it out above your comment it says "MikeKnoop."
Thanks,
The Entire Digg Community - Namco, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6In the news they mentioned that they were searching near the Black Bear Lodge area at which is at -123.7319045310275,42.65958954617269. Bear Camp Rd is at -123.7484583975781,42.57619032177936. This is where I believe they strayed off the road, there is a pretty obvious fork here. Somewhere between north of Bear Camp Rd is where I believe James is. In the valley north of of Bear Camp Rd, and south of Black Bear Lodge.
After finding Kati, they followed footprints up a road headed up towards Bear Camp. He went over the side of the road into the Big Windy Creek drainage area. 2 deputies are tracking the footprints there now. -123.734614759465,42.61036279635511
Latitude 42°36'37.31"N, Longitude 123°44'4.61"W is another way of writing it. - TravisL, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9How to you come to the conclusion he is dead????
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@oolatin79
The wife and 2 children were found at 1:45PST today in very good condition.
James left Saturday AM on snow shoes and they are now following his trail. The prints stopped at a drainage area, which may or may not be frozen. Those are basically all the details we know right now. - gohepcat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Hmmm. Does anyone consider the possiblity they were following a GPS? I know I've followed mine into some really weird places.
- rheaume, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3TravisL
Well, he left the safety of the car for a 4 hr scout in minimal clothing on Saturday at 7:30am on Saturday and its now 10pm monday....
Not looking good
BUT then again it wasnt looking good for the whole family yesterday so Im hoping for a 'movie of the week' ending here with him finding shelter since Saturday and being alive and well!
/Crosses fingers - Mitijea, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The problem was he was already on I-5. He should have taken 199 and then up 101. Yeah, it looks like a much longer route, but a much safer one, (it stays in the valleys mostly and then down river to the coast and a major highway for the area). I read earlier that Google Maps recommends the route he took, and during the summer probably is a very nice drive. But using logging roads in the winter is just asking for problems.
- zionKing, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3http://maps.google.com/maps?q=42.61036279635511+-123.734614759465&ie=UTF8&z=12&ll=42.610464,-123.73455&spn=0.124569,0.344696&t=h&om=1&iwloc=addr
- Mitijea, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Kickstart, yeah, I probably came off a bit harsh sounding, which wasn't my intention. I really do hope that the outcome of this is positive. What I find particularly difficult to grasp is why, as someone else commented earlier, a local chamber of commerce recommend the same route as Google. Someone living around there would have to know that you don't send people down roads this time of the year that will be closed for the winter season after the first snow. I'm pretty sure that particular road is not maintained during the winter and will not reopen until spring.
- zdiggler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2he should have taken beautiful coastal highway 101 instead of I5 then take a Summer Road across.
- Kickstart70, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7I've spent a lot of time on mountainous backroads in winter, having grown up and lived in an extremely rural location. One man, in the mountains in the middle of winter, without supplies, on foot, and missing for two days is very likely a goner. I mean absolutely no disrespect to the Kim family, but that opinion is based on my experience. I do hope they find him alive, but the chances of that are very low now.
- olddirtycr, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4tis true oolatin
- Namco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@kickstart, Sure everyone takes satellite phones along with them when visiting family for Thanksgiving. For you hindsight isn't only 20/20, it's downright goddam eagle-eyed.
He stayed with the family for a whole week, and they did have minimal supplies. - Kickstart70, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Mitijea, being reasonable and having a reasoned opinion in this discussion gets you downgraded, unfortunately. You make good points, I wish people would use more logic in their voting.
- krokodil, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Let us keep some hope! Miracles do happen. What you say makes sense, but at the same time chances of the small kids and their mother was also very small, but they made it after all.
- MikeKnoop, on 10/12/2007, -6/+7You realized the wife and kids were found alive right?
Mr. Kim is still missing.
-Mike - oolatin79, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1thanks for the info guys....I hadn't caught that story yet. I hope they find James.
- Stonekeeper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What worries me is that he didn't look for the road he came off. They couldn't have been that far from it...
- Deathfrogg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What the hell were they doing way up there? Thats not even a road, its more of a horse trail. The snowstorm of last week dumped several feet of wet snow up there and the terrain is really rough. Bear Camp road isn't even passable this time of year. Either he got stubborn about the route or they were using some sort of GPS unit and tried to follow the compass directions without trying to stay on a paved road.
I know the area. The roads there aren't even marked in most cases. They did NOT have the right car for that terrain at all. Its a total jeep trail in the summer and the rainy/snow season you cant even tell where the road is. How the hell did they get so lost?
Curioser and curioser.... - chrishavel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The mom and kids were found near Bear Camp Viewpoint. Here's the approximate location: http://tinyurl.com/y3fugn
Kim apparently walked "south" from there accoding to the news story at http://tinyurl.com/y4duzm
If you ask Google Maps to take you from Wolf Creek to Gold Beach, this is the road it shows.
(Chris, Salem OR, fingers crossed for James) - joejoeknows, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://digg.com/tech_news/Google_Earth_3D_Images_of_Area_James_Kim_is_Lost
- valenciastudent, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Here's to hoping all the volunteer rescue efforts haven't tainted the footprint trail........

@MikeKnoop
This story was posted almost 8 hours ago at the time of this writing (11:24 pm eastern)
The family was just found about six hours ago. So when it was posted on digg the family was still missing and that's why it says "and family" - Deathfrogg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Stupid edit limit.
Wondering about the powerline road thats up there. it winds around and doesnt even follow the tower line. There must be three or four feet of snow up there right now. - Wolfeheart, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1yes james is missing
- oolatin79, on 10/12/2007, -9/+2Is it true that only James is missing now? Or is Mike trying to pull a fast one on us? Mike? Link please.
- Kickstart70, on 10/12/2007, -25/+2Pretty sad story, but people really do need to be more aware of when it's appropriate to make backroad trips and when it is not, and not only that but also to be driving the right vehicle and have the right equipment for those conditions.
It appears likely that James Kim may have perished, unfortunately. A satellite phone and a few very minimal supplies would have kept him with his family until help arrived.
